I think each generation gets caught up in what’s new or ‘fresh’. And so, many younger people don’t know the music I grew up with. I love exposing them to classic rock. Their reactions are usually WOW, how have I not heard this band?
I remember going to see the J.Giles Band back in the early 1980's. Their opening act was an unknown Irish group that called themselves U2. The Irish lead singer was great, but he had a strange stage name as well. I think it was something like "Bono" ?
Churchill described his bouts of deep depression as having the Black Dog. His Cabinet Ministers and staff knew to not annoy him when suffering to avoid having their heads chewed off.
@@LindaC616 It was one of his black dog episodes that prevented his attendance at the Treaty of Rome signing and Britain becoming a founder member of the EEC, this turned his then friend De Gaulle against Britain. The Treaty was flown to London for signing, due to adverse weather it didn't make it back before the deadline, planes had to fly through the Alps then not over, it might have made it by road or via Gibraltar. France continued to oppose the UK's entry until the 70's.
As a zeppelin fan you need to understand that the four members are all very intelligent. There is a lot of meaning behind very lyric .They have a lot of lyrics that come from older folklore ,literature and myths .Most ppl don’t even know what they are singing about .Each one of these members are a true legend ! So much talent and passion in each song! You need to go beyond the “Stairway” to get the full Led Zeppelin experience! Love these guys ! Don’t know what music would be today if these four guys never meshed into this beautiful quartet!
In which Ann Wilson (vocals) and Nancy Wilson of Heart lead the band’s biggest hit “Stairway to Heaven” along with Jason Bonham in drums (who looks so much like his dad) and a gigantic chorus and orchestra. It’s an epic moment in rock history that feels like a passing of the torch to the next generation and which the emotional reaction of the living members of the group is amazing to see. Speaking of Heart, their massive hit “Barracuda” is amazing and I’m sure you’ll LOVE IT!
There was a frisky old black dog hanging around when they were recording. After a day of galavanting, the old dog needed help getting home. The band helped him home. I think they related to his antics :)
Zeppelin could be a very, very deep rabbit hole for you to fall down🤘. The Wanton Song is another I think you would like a lot. A funky groove with John Bonham laying down some tasty drum licks. LZ was definitely one of my favorites as a kid, and sometimes I think I'm still a kid at heart. Another band I would recommend is Grand Funk Railroad, specifically the songs Paranoid from Grand Funk Live, or Inside Lookin' Out, live 1969. I first got into both LZ, and GFR in '69 or'70 because of my big brother.
I wonder if Irish bands that are popular in the US are also popular in Ireland? Bands such as U2 or even individuals such as Sinead O'connor. This if from memory but I think the song is "Sail Away" on the album "Orinoco Flow" by Enya. Oh wait, what was I going to do? Oh well, maybe next time. Good day to ya'll, and to all a good night.
Great Reaction Diane - having heard this a million times on American Rock Radio since the 70's, it's so refreshing to see it through your fresh eyes. Love the edits, insertions of comical bits, and you researching time signatures and purient in real time - all good! Keep 'em coming, as Planty might say!
Sir Winston Churchill often referred to his "black dog" when he was depressed. Usually when he got bad news on how the war was going for England.( both WW1 & WW2)
Great song and video to react to. I’ve never seen this video before. I think you said it best that Robert Plant liked to lead with certain aspects of himself. Lol.
You're right ! Led Zeppelin is famous for shifts in rhythms. The regretted John Bonham was also regularly changing tempo during songs, following the lead instrument or the base, depending on... God knows why... This is what makes it so special and unique.
I had un-paused the video after stopping to Google the definition of "prurient" and typing it out into my notepad, only to see you basically doing the same (which gave me a wee laugh). Great video. I really like seeing people react to bands, acts or songs that I love, after hearing it for the first time. And it was a really good analysis. Sláinte
Yay, Diane once again gets the “Led” out!!😃. Jimmy Page was my hero as a 15-17 year old. I love watching Diane’s face when she reacts to this “Acid Rock Blues”. I don’t know many ladies who revere their music at all. ❤to Diane!!
@@komcaloon5609 No worries the band does sound good live. My Dad was born in the late 50s, He got to see Led Zeppelin live in concert back in the day and lots of bands. My mom went to some concerts in late 70s and 80s.
@@rickeycarey4556 Wow, that had to be cool to see them in person! I didn’t get into them until the 80s and by that time they weren’t a band anymore because the drummer had died. I do remember seeing a movie called “the song remains the same” which was a compilation of their concert footage. My parents were born in the 40s and they always said “..that stuff is too heavy!”
The band felt this was the hardest song to play live. Also...the audience participation is taken directly from the studio album wher Robert sings that part. Love your reactions and other content. Its fun to see "my" music (what I grew up with)through anothers eyes. ❤
Sadly, the drummer, John Bonham has passed away, but his son has been filling in for him. In honor of international Women’s Month you might want to play and comment on the Led Zepplin Kennedy Center Honors
Yeah, Jason Bonham has played with the band several times. It was after John Bonham died that the band suddenly and unexpectedly broke up. They just felt they could not go on without him and that Led Zeppelin would not be Led Zeppelin without "Bonzo" They of course have reunited many times since and used various drummers including Phil Collins who played the drums for them during Live Aid.
@@nataliestclair6176 in interviews they each have said, if any member quit or unfortunately passed like Bonham, they knew the band was over. They each had a quarter say etc. in the band, they were all equal. For Live Aid, Phil Collins & another guy played drums, two to make up for Bonzo. The other guy didn’t know the songs, & screwed things up, Phil Collins picked the other drummer. Jason Bonham is the only one, who even comes close to playing like his dad. For Celebration Day, he learned all his dad’s parts in all the songs, he didn’t know what songs would be picked to play.
Several of their songs are done in different counts, that’s one of the things that made them the greatest ever. No two of their lives were ever played the same, but they were all in sync, with the changes. Page so often would add more to his guitar solos, & Plant often added lyrics from other song to the lives. I’m not sure what all you’ve reacted to, but any song you’d pick, will be amazing & often different. Since they do play so many different genres, & thank you for your reaction.
@@sicotshit7068 yeah Jason was as close to being as great as his father as one could get. My opinion is that John Bonham is the GOAT of drums. His Moby Dick solo is just awesome
"Shredding" nice use of vocabulary Ms Jennings; full points. To truly get a feel of the drummer's energy "Moby Dick" is a must. Led Zeppelin has so many great songs. I hope you react to more of them. You have to love the randomness of how they got the title to this one. Thanks Diane
I enjoyed learning with You what Led Zeppelin's Black Dog song is about. I guessed part of the song right being about a Black Dog. I did learn alot of new things about the song with You. I find it interesting how alot of bands songs have many meanings to each song.
There is so much music out there, it's not even funny! I bet I've listened to stuff that 95%+ of the people commenting haven't heard. Not saying this is one of them, but I didn't know I'd like Mongolian Throat Singing Metal until I heard it. That's a group called The Hu. Might be interesting to check out here.
For reference, when someone says "I can't believe you've never heard this!" it's more of a figure of speech, as opposed to accusing you of lying. It's an expression meaning "I'm astounded that you haven't heard this song, which has permeated pop culture for decades." Though admittedly it's a very America-centric version of pop culture.
I love listening to Led Zeppelin. Another song to check out of theirs would be Fool In The Rain. Black Dog (the song) often brings up a memory of my grandmother. I was doing yard work for her one day, and I was playing a CD of A String Quartet Tribute To Led Zeppelin, and she happened to come outside while their rendition of Black Dog was playing, and she commented about how beautiful that sounded (it was purely instrumental). I had to refrain from telling her that she would likely not tolerate the actual song, but just agreed with her and went back to work.
Black dog is also a term over the road truckers use, usually if you see one it's almost always imminent death. It's an old term for when truckers traveled so long to meet a deadline they'd often fall asleep at the wheel, this was before computers monitored log books or governed mileage and time.
During recording, a black dog was running in and out of the studio so they used that. Girl, I am so happy to welcome you to the club (along with my 24yo son!). Zep was the perfect balance of power, touch, musicianship, versatility, creativity, showmanship and constant growth through change and experimentation. Get their studio catalog and listen in chronological order - you will thank me. The first two albums created/developed classic English hard rock out of American Blues while introducing bits of English folk (plus some other flavors, like a touch of Indian music...). The untitled 4th album crystallized all of that. Houses Of The Holy brought further experimentation with a bit of jazz being incorporated. Physical Graffiti was a double album of masterpieces filled in with mainly rock with tremendous variety. Presence was recorded in two weeks after a lot of personal tragedies had hit the band, so it's the ultimate scream of '70s diamond hard rock with no acoustic tunes. Then get the live albums, and listen how they adapted, changed and grew as the tours went on. This is a fabulous musical journey, trust me. Page's "guitar army" developed over time as he went from a single or double tracked super loud and thick Les Paul / Marshall sound to thinner sounds with more guitars (a Strat sometimes) layered. By the time of "Achilles Last Stand" he's got 13 guitar tracks overdubbed and chattering. Once you go through all of this you will understand why - after Bonzo died - they decided that they "couldn't go on as they were."
I saw them live at Live Aid. They played 3 songs, "Rock and Roll," "Whole Lotta Love" and "Stairway to Heaven." Everyone in the stadium was on their feet, including myself!!!
"hard time getting the rhythm of that song", well touring has a way of varying performances. Take a little time to look for agreed best performances. Still good stuff.
The only band I know of where every member was widely accepted as a virtuoso. the only other bands that come close are Cream and Rush and IMO they still fall short in some regards. With Rush while alex great he still isn't on Page level and while Geddy is great he doesn't sing like Plant and I'd still give JPJ the nod as a better bass player. JPJ is one of the best all around musicians in rock music the man can play almost anything and play well. The same can be said about cream, the musicians all come close but don't quite measure up and the vocals aren't on a Plant level.

I remember going to see the J.Giles Band back in the early 1980's.
Their opening act was an unknown Irish group that called themselves U2.
The Irish lead singer was great, but he had a strange stage name as well.
I think it was something like "Bono" ?
Its satisfying to see someone who may have only known modern pop music to discover they had a more sophisticated taste in music than they realized.
Churchill described his bouts of deep depression as having the Black Dog. His Cabinet Ministers and staff knew to not annoy him when suffering to avoid having their heads chewed off.
That’s fascinating! I heard he was a moody fella
Can't fault him for being depressed at times and being cranky at the time though can we with all that was going one around him? 😀
@DianeJennings yes, and something makes me think that Churchill got the reference from literature, just can't remember...Stevenson?
@@DianeJenningsI was wrong--it goes all the way back to Horace!
LZ was my high school jam....long time ago.
Three instruments and a voice. Real music.
I'll check it out! Thank you Bill
Burned through a couple of 8 tracks of this album back in the day🤘🤘
I wonder if Irish bands that are popular in the US are also popular in Ireland? Bands such as U2 or even individuals such as Sinead O'connor.
This if from memory but I think the song is "Sail Away" on the album "Orinoco Flow" by Enya. Oh wait, what was I going to do? Oh well, maybe next time.
Good day to ya'll, and to all a good night.
The same question. I have a feeling Cranberries had their day, and people worshiped MacGowan's irreverence, but I've also wondered
The black dog in this song is a literal black dog that was hanging around the studio.
Ah she mentions that in 8:22.
I did not know what word prurient was either till today. Thanks for teaching me a new word. All the college education is helping me learn too.
I love new words!!
@@DianeJennings Me Too! 🎉 Singing words would be a interesting way to learn.🎤🎸
Great song and video to react to. I’ve never seen this video before. I think you said it best that Robert Plant liked to lead with certain aspects of himself. Lol.
Well said! I agree-glad you enjoyed it Heather!
You're right ! Led Zeppelin is famous for shifts in rhythms. The regretted John Bonham was also regularly changing tempo during songs, following the lead instrument or the base, depending on... God knows why... This is what makes it so special and unique.
Diane! Is My Jam! 👧 🖤 ✔

Led Zeppelin is one of the bands that's music sounds really good Live.
Yay, Diane once again gets the “Led” out!!😃. Jimmy Page was my hero as a 15-17 year old. I love watching Diane’s face when she reacts to this “Acid Rock Blues”. I don’t know many ladies who revere their music at all. ❤to Diane!!
Sorry Rickey, I didn’t mean to hijack your comment. I do agree though that they were great live!😃
I had the opportunity to see Heart and the John Bonham Band appearing together. The matchup was perfect.
Yeah, Jason Bonham has played with the band several times.
It was after John Bonham died that the band suddenly and unexpectedly broke up. They just felt they could not go on without him and that Led Zeppelin would not be Led Zeppelin without "Bonzo"
They of course have reunited many times since and used various drummers including Phil Collins who played the drums for them during Live Aid.
Feeding the algorithm, my brain isn’t up to having an intelligent comment at the moment.
Yum yum yum 🤤
It's cool. I took edibles too. ;)
Hi Diane!
Wow! What an amazing choice!
I was one lucky lady to be at that concert!!👍👍👍🥰
I enjoyed learning with You what Led Zeppelin's Black Dog song is about. I guessed part of the song right being about a Black Dog. I did learn alot of new things about the song with You. I find it interesting how alot of bands songs have many meanings to each song.
I’m so glad you enjoy them Rickey
@@DianeJennings Always Diane 💃🕺
There is so much music out there, it's not even funny! I bet I've listened to stuff that 95%+ of the people commenting haven't heard. Not saying this is one of them, but I didn't know I'd like Mongolian Throat Singing Metal until I heard it. That's a group called The Hu. Might be interesting to check out here.
The Hu are awesome!
I’ve heard of that… It doesn’t sound up my alley
@@DianeJennings I didn't think it was up mine either, but I like it. Even though I don't know Mongolian.
Great song first heard on radio in school 1970 hook me with led zeppelin till now
For reference, when someone says "I can't believe you've never heard this!" it's more of a figure of speech, as opposed to accusing you of lying. It's an expression meaning "I'm astounded that you haven't heard this song, which has permeated pop culture for decades." Though admittedly it's a very America-centric version of pop culture.
Kids today don't even listen to corporate sanitized playlists of classic rock.
I think some mean it literally, at least by the way they phrase it.
Diane representing for us musically ignorant millennials. And we adore her for it! Or at least I do anyways 😜
Aww shucks Thankee!!
Went to see Mr Plant on Friday, stunning and an amazing rendition of the Rain Song
R. I. P. John Bottoms 🙏🏼
Surely, you meant John Bonham?!!
I saw them live at Live Aid. They played 3 songs, "Rock and Roll," "Whole Lotta Love" and "Stairway to Heaven." Everyone in the stadium was on their feet, including myself!!!
I just will never understand why reactors choose inferior live renditions of songs to listen to for the first time.
"hard time getting the rhythm of that song", well touring has a way of varying performances. Take a little time to look for agreed best performances. Still good stuff.
Horsshit. The live version is always better
This performance is honestly better than the recorded song. Extended solo from Page is just amazing
@@Nesgimp Because they're just more fun. : ))
All 4 members of Zeppelin are master musicians. One of the best rock bands in the history of rock and roll and forefathers of heavy metal. 🤘
The only band I know of where every member was widely accepted as a virtuoso. the only other bands that come close are Cream and Rush and IMO they still fall short in some regards. With Rush while
alex great he still isn't on Page level and while Geddy is great he doesn't sing like Plant and I'd still give JPJ the nod as a better bass player. JPJ is one of the best all around musicians in rock music the man can play almost anything and play well. The same can be said about cream, the musicians all come close but don't quite measure up and the vocals aren't on a Plant level.
They named them "supergroup" because all individuals were masters . The who are another "supergroup" .
i really like the who and i think they get a 3 out of 4. Pete is not on the same level as Page@@sportscarsmovies
