I want to mention something, because I feel like for a lot of people they miss the point of my comparisons. I get a lot of comments with people legitimately angry for me testing a cartridge and then judging it's performance against the 9mm. Example would be, If I feel a particular cartridge does better than that 9mm I am comparing it to, I am accused of being biased.
The only reason why I compare so many cartridges to the 9mm is because it's the most popular cartridge out there, a lot more people understand it's ballistics, so that lays a good baseline for more people who are new to this stuff to understand it all easily. So what this means is if I use the 9mm in a higher percentage of videos as a comparisons VS other cartridges, there's going to be a good number of those videos where the 9mm performs not as good as the other cartridge.
That's just math and odds. I am not biased against the 9mm and have no reason to be. What is troubling to me is people being biased, calling the 9mm the best cartridge, period, and then saying my testing is rigged or my analysis is dumb, all because THEY are biased. It gets real old real fast.
I've noticed far too many people get extremely defensive over 9mm. Since it's the "standard", and it's cheap (relative to every other handgun cartridge), many people seem to refuse the idea of using a cartridge other than 9mm. Whether because that cartridge may have some advantage over 9mm, or just because someone likes a different cartridge more than 9mm.
I get a similar experience with revolvers where some people out there INSIST that .357 Magnum/.38 Special is the ONLY revolver cartridge that matters, and if you like .32 then you are a fool.
Frankly, it's these kind of attitudes amongst the community that almost make me want to quit firearms. I'm just getting worn out from people telling me that the cartridges I like, .32, 10mm, etc. are pointless and 9mm, 5.56, .308, .357, etc. are the ONLY cartridges anyone should bother with. Well, why are there all these different cartridges and firearms chambered for them exist if I'm supposed to only look at firearms chambered in the aforementioned cartridges? Do I not have the right to buy firearms that interest me, or suit my use case better?

The average person (and I have seen their videos) would take a look at the gel, measure the penetration, look at the bullet, and threw .327 into the garbage declaring 9mm the winner. Bigger wound, bigger hole, higher capacity, more common ammo, yadda yadda yadda.
That's the trouble with amateur ballistic content creators. You are NOT amateur with these things, nor particularly biased (everyone has bias to some degree, that's what makes us human).

327 crushes the SC. Same bullets, 327 is about 150-200 fps out of the LCR.
@@gonzob9609 The argument for the 327 Fed is the extra round over the 38/357/9mm options in a j-frame size. Well, the 30 Super isn't as powerful round-for-round as the 327 Fed but getting 16 rds out of the Shield Plus before you even have to think about reloading is something to consider vs. the 327 Fed. at 6 rds.
@@SouthernShodan I own an EZ, and a Shield+. I carry the LCR though. I've basically gotten rid of my larger caliber handguns, and stick to the .312 bullets. Comes in handy reloading since they use the same bullets. The revolver is lighter, and fits in my front pocket. I know it's going to fire no matter what. I shoot it more probably because it's so easy to load. Straight brass, and doesn't need to function the gun. I have a LCR in 22 as well. 8 shot. Getting around 1K fps with the 40 grain Winchester V hollow points. I'd have no problem carrying that either. Trigger is heavier due to the rimfire, so it gives my trigger finger a good workout.
@@gonzob9609 I need to get into reloading. Would help justify my love of revolvers over semi's. The semi's are better, no doubt, but revolvers just have a bit more soul.

Sometime ago, traded in my Charter Arms Professional .32 H&R Mag (and a couple of $$) and obtained a new SP101, 3" in .327. And let me tell you, what a blast I have been having with it! The American Eagle 85 gr & 100 gr soft points are magnificent rounds! Almost 1200 fps & 1460 fps respectively!
I have found a small local ammo mfg that also has a passion for all things 32, he has been producing 2 rounds that utilize an 85 gr XTP bullet that also moves at 1200 fps for the .327 and almost 1050 for the 32 H&R. Both are pleasant to shoot out of the 3" SP101.
I am now looking for the Taurus 327 2" bbl to utilize the 85 gr H&R Mags he produces.

I'm glad they're making the 3,4" models again. I've had some hiccups with my taurus. It came without a firing pin spring that I had to order, and install. Getting light strikes on CCI primers now, and then. Seems 100% with Federal. Grip's not the greatest. I'd fork over the money for an LCR is you're going to be using it for H&R loads. Love that trigger. Pretty sure they'll make the 2" 101 next rotation.
Another option would be the Smith Wesson J-frame in H&R. Pretty gun, night sights, more expensive, but it does have the Smith bootcut grip. No idea of the trigger on these. Another plus, if you're only going to put H&R's through it, the cylinder stop is moved back to the brass to keep you from loading 327 in it. It also much better for shooting wadcutters that won't nick the ledge of the 327. I finally figured this out loading for my Cimarron 32-20/ 32 H&R single action. I shoot a ton of Speer 98 gr WC's that have a hollow back, and load them sticking out of the case by a couple of tenths to clear the brass stop. They act like one of the old Minne Balls.

Rated velocity: The 9mm+P= 124 gr @ 1,220 FPS/410 ft lbs energy 4" test barrel. The .327 Federal= 100 gr @ 1,500 FPS/500 ft lbs energy 4" V test barrel.
There used to be three different loadings from Gold Dot for 327 FM.
23913 - 100gr 1355 fps
23913GD - 100gt 1600 fps
23914 - 115 gr 1335 fps
It would appear they've narrowed it down to only one loading on their website. Some of that other stuff is still floating around out there.

I type in a lengthy comment and accidentally bump my mouse. Boom. Comment gone! Both cartridges did very well, IMO. I prefer the revolver because I don't trust small semi-autos in a potential hands on situation where failure to get a proper grip may get you a jam after the first shot.
I was an early adopter of 327 federal. Great little round and an excellent cartridge for reloaders.
327 Fed Mag is frightening out of a 4 inch, 5 inch and 6 inch barrel. Insanely Fast.

327 mag in a rifle barrell is pretty much a modern straight wall version of M1 Carbine round.
Last time I saw 327M in a store was 2020.....FEB.....gone and done.....

Considering how close the performance is I'll stock with my LCR in 9mm. At least I can find and afford to shoot the ammo. If I reloaded it might be a different story.
Just order it online. It’s a save your life ammo, not one you would burn hundreds of rounds of at the range.
327 Fed mag is no joke! I’ve been singing its praises for years! If you can’t solve the issues with 6 rounds of that you probably need to get out of Dodge quick! We’re heading out west from Michigan soon on a roadtrip and I’ll definitely have the LCR with me! In lodging and around town I’ll keep the Double Tap 32H&R magnum wadcutters in it, hiking/desert/woods I’ll have the Underwood in it. Extremely flexible. 👍🏻

We shot the same revolver at the range in 327 mag and the blast was too much. It really needs a 6"+ barrel to burn more of all that powder. The owner of the revolver in question used 32 H&R mag ammo for defense load and 32 Long for practice.
There's almost no handgun cartridge that burns 'all' it's powder in any typical handgun size. Even 9mm will burn up to something like 12" or more.
124gr +P GD has lots of real world shooting data and it's pretty good. This test shows the great performance of both loads. I carry this 9mm load because it's wayyy easier on unprotected ears, the guns I use are way easier to shoot accurately & quickly, & the ammo is about half the cost buying in cases. I find the G19 almost as easy to conceal as my J-frame but the Hellcat is easier than both. Jerry Miculek proves what can be done with DA, but with my history of shooting since childhood I'm far more skilled with autos vs DA in my J frame. Maybe I'd shoot the LCR better but not likely as well as an auto. Your choice of loads to compare was spot on. If available a G32 w/357 Sig GD would have added an extra dimension. That's another ear buster but no worse than a 38+P in a snub in my opinion. Anyone getting angry about your work here needs some help. Thank you for the great presentations!
@GunSam -As you note, frequently, there is no “perfect” handgun caliber or cartridge. Each has advantages and limitations. We (your subscribers) appreciate learning which caliber and/or cartridge might be the best choice in different situations. Keep on doing your fine work here. I still have more to learn and I still need valid excuses to buy more guns!
In your opinion, Mr. Sam, why 327 federal magnum is not a popular caliber in snubbies revólver for ccw? It has better velocity than 38 spl
First of all, I don't go by "Mr. Sam", but the answer to the question is because it's a revolver cartridge, and new things revolver wise rarely get very popular. The old school rounds like .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum and so on, remain popular as they are a continuation of history and continuation of old things so they tend to be popular among more people. A new thing that is trying to be part of an older thing, generally doesn't do very well. Same reason that a classic car is loved by people, but the new cars that look like classic cars a bit in design, people are like "eh".
For a couple of years now, based largely on your testing, i have been contemplating the 327. In the LCR it makes for a great carey revolver. The 4-5/8" Single Seven would be a good trail/hiking gun, and you can use the same ammo (and the make a 3.75" with birdshead grips 😁). BB makes a hard cast also, if you are concerned about animal defense. My only concern would be flash and blast. That is a high pressure round for a snubby. Certainly an issue for self defense indoors. The 9mm 124 +p is now a world standard, is consistent, and does well. I am very fond of Gold Dot in several chamberings, incl the 9mm. Great test as always.

The way you describe 327 makes me think of the 30 super carry designed for short barrels with higher oreasure i like the 30 super carry Hornady critacsl defense is very similar to the 9mm version and you get 3 more rounds in a sheild plus

I chronographed a .357 Hornady ballistic tip out of my 2" SW PD and compared it to a standard pressure 9mm out of a 4.5" barrel, both 125 grain projectiles.
The winner? 9mm = 1150 fps, 357 = 1050 fps. I was a bit surprised at just how much you lose out of a 2" barrel...
How about a comparison of some popular 5.7X28 rounds? There are a lot of brands making the guns now, and in different actions also. There are a few common brands making bullets too, but almost all of them are actually made in America by Fiocci. Prices vary widely, and some of the better velocity bullets are the most inexpensive. How about testing a couple of 40 grain solid point versions to see what they look like in gel? Thanks.................................elsullo

Good show Sam. I have Gold Dots for my 357 Sig and 40 cal. I carry Underwood 9mm with Gold Dot projectile. That 327 is very interesting!
I have .32 mags in my LCR (.380 level of performance) because those 100 gr Gold Dots (I have some) are so loud & blasty it seems like instant deafness would result if fired without earpro. Ejection is a bit sticky, too.

It strikes me that at 100 grain bullet weight that the .327 Federal Magnum is really what the .380 ACP wants to be. But it is hitting above that weight, closer to 9mm in shorter barrel lengths. The one deciding factor to me is that I have never seen .327 Federal Magnum on a loss leader sale, where as 9mm is so vastly 100x more popular that it is constantly found on sale at some retailer or another. Well, unlike apparently many viewers I do understand and appreciate when you “compare” different calibers as it provides information, though limited, about each one’s potential in a real world situation. From my 45 years of firearm use and training that involved some sophisticated scientific testing of the result of bullet damage to true organic jell, synthetic jell, and animal corpses coupled with a myriad of research on firearm wounds in humans, synthetic jell is a very poor representative media of the true effect on mammalian tissue, organs and bone. However, it serves a purpose when comparing the performance of bullet types, especially under your rather unique conditions. With that said, I find value in your comparison testing in providing information to help in selecting firearms and bullets. Thank you.
Both of these rounds are filthy (in a good way). Wow, they are both really good choices. I wouldn't feel undergunned with either choice. I have no experience with the .327 magnum, so thank you for the eye opening test.
That may be the most evenly matched gel test I've seen using cartridges that are so different. I carry gold dots in my Ruger SP101 327. The fact that it has enough velocity to ensure expansion out of even the shortest barrels is what seals the deal for me.
I think the biggest difference is too many manufacturers loading right at expansion velocities for their test barrel in 9mm. Since none of us use test barrel length for carry purposes, we get suboptimal performance. The .327 has higher pressure and velocity, and a shorter test barrel is used, so we are more likely to see the performance we are looking for.

if that's true, you aren't normal. My brother is the president of a hearing aid firm, he's given me a ton of information. Only way to lose your hearing would either to be firing like 10,000 rounds of these no ear pro, or to have the gun a foot away from your ear and blow your ear drum. Considering these facts, might I suggest that you are lying?

Is there a particular reason why sometimes the bullet will penetrate more with MDF insert?
I haven't tried Speer's load, but I've tried Steinel's 100gr .327 Federal load and, like 85gr loads, found it to be surprisingly manageable out of my Taurus 327. I wouldn't want to shoot .357 Magnum out of a Taurus small-frame like the 327 (605 for .357), but I've been consistently surprised at how controllable .327 is FOR ME out of a small-frame steel snub.
Yeah, I also like the Hydrashok 85 gr load. The difference within .327 Federal loads is as vast as the difference between .38 Special and .357 Magnum. The difference is that the lesser powerful option in .327 Federal is still fast enough to expand a hollow point, even if it has the same energy as .38+P.
@@GunSam Right. And I don't know about you, but in my experience the 85gr .327 loads also shoot the most consistently to POA. Which is pretty handy, because 85gr .32 H&R loads also shoot POA out of my revolver. I can carry .32 H&R or .327 and not have to worry about a POI shift.

Glock 32, That's what I'm carrying right now. I was carrying a Glock 19 and had the thought "The 19 and 32 are the same size, why not just carry a 32?"
A good thing about the Glock 32 that I've experienced, compared to metal framed 357 SIG pistols you don't get the the stinging vibration with the Glock. I think it has to do with the polymer frame.
.357sig in a Glock would beat the frame to death just like the .40 S&W beat the frame to death. Perhaps the increased width (slight) on the Gen5 would solve that, but prior, they simply used a 9mm frame for the .40 and they didn't hold up.
A 2-inch Taurus .327 has been my EDC for a couple of years now, and it is loaded with 100 grain Gold Dots, with two speed loaders in my pocket. If I need more firepower than that, my next choice is the Glock 20, most likely with the 9x25 Dillon conversion barrel, as that one launches 90 grain Lehigh XDs at 1800 fps and holds 16 rounds. I joke that a whole mag of those will turn anything it was launched at into Glock-a-mole.
You know, with my 5" M&P 40 2.0 with KKM .357 Sig conversion barrel, the .357 Sig 90 gr XD will do 1,752 FPS. If you are looking for close the that 1,800 FPS with something simpler and probably cheaper, that could be a good option. Holds 16 as well.
The SIG and 9x25 get to roughly the same place. And I am a hand loader, so for me the 9x25 is perfect. And in the G20 platform, I have pushed them up to 1900, but backed off the powder as the ejected brass flew too far. Primers looked good, even on the ones thrown to the other side of the range, but I don't want to chase cases.

The .327 Federal in Buffalo Bore? Why do you mention it that way? When I tested it, it was significantly less powerful and exciting than this Gold Dot.
@GunSam Love my LCR with 85 grain Low Recoil Hydra-Shok. The BB Heavy 327 Outdoorsman is a bit much.
What about this... If you put, like, a 10x10 white sheet pulled tight between two poles right behind the target at 75 yards, almost touching the back of the target, you could easily see where the rounds are going off the target, and then the viewers wouldn't be confused by the camera distortion about where the rounds are going..

Nope. People have suggested that, and it was the dumbest idea they ever thought up. I went from (camera went from too) being able to at least see some dirt impacts so I could adjust my hold, to a tiny cardboard hole impossible for me to see while shooting, while perfectly blocking the ability to see where in the dirt they landed. There's something I've been curious about for a while, & it's relevant to this test, so I'll ask: How do you feel the over all shootability in terms of recoil & fast follow ups of that .327 out of the lcr compared with the Buffalo Bore .38 special 158 gr standard p lswchp out of an m&p 340 (13 oz. weight)?

@GunSam could you please explain what happens if a revolver has too big of a forcing cone gap. I have Taurus 605 with .02 forcing cone to cylinder gap
If it's too big, obviously you can lose a lot of gas and power. If it's as big as I think you are saying, nearly 3 times bigger than normal, it should be sent back to Taurus to fix it. You could probably fix it yourself with little washers called shims that lessen "endshake" aka gap, but I have never done it myself. Safe bet is to have Taurus fix it.

I found a whole bunch of the 115 grain gold dot in 327 FM. I wish they'd bring them back. I'm saving those for edc and hand loading 115 grain swchp for coyotes and such.

@@ted.angell7609 how do they lead to extraction problems in a revolver? I've only ever had extraction problems from split cases that were loaded too hot. I've shot at least a hundred of these already.

Sam, I've only become interested in the 327 magnum because of your channel. I've seen the cartridges for sale in several places, but I've never seen a revolver in person. 500 ft/lbs of muzzle energy is nice, but who in my family would go for one when everyone goes for a 357 magnym or bigger.

327 is great, but expensive!
Depends on how you look at it. The .327 Federal Magnum defensive ammo is the same cost as .357 Magnum or .38 Special in the same brand. Same for most other brands of defensive ammo. The only time one might consider it expensive, is when someone buys the only few rounds that exist for target shooting, the American Eagle. American Eagle is notorious for high cost though. My point, is I don't see it any more expensive to shoot or carry than other revolver calibers, just harder to find the ammo.
Yeah, but it’s not like there are ammo cans of .327 reloads out there like there is for 38.
That said, for new purchases I’m sticking to 9mm these days. It’s widely available for reasonable $, relatively.
After waiting 4 years, I finally picked up a Henry 327 Big Boy. I remember when you could buy one new for $650ish 6 or 7 years ago. Like a dummy, I didn’t buy a truck load of them back then. I guess Henry finally got around to making a few as they are showing up on GunBroker.

My dad carried a .327 in a Ruger SP101 for the last two years before he died and he was throughly enamored with it. I was fairly impressed as well and its a nice middle range cartridge. On another topic, I realize this might be a little outside of your normal subject matter, but I would really like to persuade you-if possible to ballistic gel test and chronograph a Colt 1860 Army with a really stout load of Triple 7 and roundball vs conicals for the folks (like myself who are convicted felons) and have resorted to carrying blackpowder pistols for personal protection. To not commit another felony, I EDC a 3rd Gen Colt 1860 Army and will continue to do so even after my record expungement which i am in the process of obtaining. Many people, both Felons and clean slate guys, watch your channel and you do an awesome presentation which is consistent and with reproducible results/attention to detail and accurate data. For the cap-and ball sixgun guys we are often overlooked and underrepresented in self defense/ballistics testing videos and your methodical approach is data driven and we can all appreciate that. Just an idea but it would undoubtedly make for a super neat presentation.
How is ammo prices for? .327, i would get one but i dont see ammo often.

I never buy practice ammo in stores ever, so I don't know. Defensive ammo like this Gold Dot is about the same price as typical defensive .357 Magnum ammo. When I want to shoot, I just buy .32 S&W Long ammo to shoot, or handload ammo.
On Line Pricing:
.327 ammo is usually around $38 - $44 box of 50
.32 H&R Mag runs about $45 - $50 box of 50
.32 S&W Long runs about $23 to $25 box of 50

I noticed when you emptied the .327 there was some stickiness. Is that the ejectror rod running out of travel before the mouth of the case is clear of the cylinder?
No, it's just that Gold Dot are among the hottest .327 Federal rounds out there, so the brass expands a lot. I sometimes get the same thing in my full size 686 with .357 Mag if the loads are hot enough.
I have the same issue with 100 gr loads in my SP101 3". That load is so hot that the shell casings really get tight, especially after shooting a dozen rounds or so through the pistol.
85 grain bullets, while they too are hot (1200 fps or so) they dont beat the casings up as much. Thus are easier to eject.

Fair? The guns are the same size and there's a tad more barrel travel with the .327 Federal revolver. Is it not fair that there's essentially MORE barrel with the revolver?

I was very skeptical of the 327 but the data and testing shows it works well and I think it is a better option for "recoil sensitive" than 380
In a heavier revolver than what I use, a .327 Federal recoils about like a .38 Special+P. In a light snub it's a bit more recoil than .380 ACP.
32 S&W Long has Zero Recoil like a 22LR

@@327Federal That's true. A hot .32 S&W like the Magtech 98 gr SJHP that has like 150 ft lbe energy like a .380 ACP, has a lot less recoil than .380. Almost an unbelievable amount of non recoil.

Hey man, as always, I appreciate the content. I just wanted to recommend the Taurus 327 Defender T.O.R.O. 3". If you look around, you can find them for a pretty great price and, for me, it filled the gap between my LCR and GP100 5.5". I just couldn't justify the price to get an SP101.
Food for thought. The cartridge itself, was developed between Ruger and Federal and Federal had Ruger made an SP101 3" in .327 Federal to develop the cartridge around. That has a coolness factor. But I get it, it's expensive. Might be worth it in a more popular caliber, but much the way I see a S&W revolver in .41 Magnum. A $1,000 revolver in .357 or .44 or even 10mm, I could see the point, but I can't see the point in a chambering that is hard to feed, unless that firearm is cheap.
I heard the trigger wasn't very good, how do you like yours? I like Taurus overall, got an automatic and couple revolvers.

Not sure what that means specifically. "A comparison". Seeing as I have compared both so many times, obviously...there must be something specific you are thinking of that I have not done.

@@johncooper1107 It's not quite just as powerful, if the ammo is exactly fair. That being said, a typical .357 Mag energy in a snub is like 450 ft lbs, and the .327 is typical like we saw here, about 410 ft lbs. In a 4" barrel it's closer to 500 ft lbs energy with the .327 Federal and 580 with the .357 Mag with a comparable ammo loaded as fairly. That being said, the .327 Federal with hot ammo is as powerful as a lot of poorly loaded .357 Magnum ammo.
Also keep in mind that energy numbers are a narrow metric into the field of ballistics, only telling one story, and typically the most favorite story because the velocity numbers quickly increase the energy numbers when the reality is, few could tell any difference in application. The most obvious of this phenomenon is when you've tested the heavy-n-slow .38 Special slugs that put out pittance for energy numbers but still are very effective when tumbling, at a mere sub 700 fps speed.
