    My name is Dwayne white, also known as DW blues. I play oregon, piano, synthesizer, melodica, upright bass, chemic electric harp, saxophone, clarinet, and flute. I have been studying the aerophone with you by listening to some of your videos. I would say watching some of your videos, but I have a challenge. You see, due to a condition of micro at thelma, I was born with no eyeballs. I hold a bachelor, two masters, a dma, dme, and an EDD, all in music. I just got an arrow phone today. It is a rolling Aero phone Pro. I love it. If I can just learn where everything is, I shouldn't have any trouble with it. I may need some help though

    Thanks for the initial thoughts and look forward to more in-depth videos. As a multi-instrumentalist -- guitar, tenor sax, bass flute, hand percussion -- this higher-level Aerophone looks pretty appealing. I use the Aerophone Go right now as a go-anywhere practice instrument. LOVE IT! But the AE-30 looks truly gig-capable.

      My experience is the AE-10 has some qualities/expressivness lacking in the AE-30. I somehow got a Ae-10 violin patch to increase volume in the high reg like a real inst and the delay/reverb is very easily added ....AE-30 is very tough to edit well.

My guess is, next time, they're going to enhance Go, and that's the time when I'm going to definitely buy one.

    Hello Alistair. I have listen to a number of videos with regards to the new Aerophone Pro coming out and you are definately HEAD & SHOULDERS above all the others. Your articulation in describing the instrument and playing is just fabulous. I have pre-ordered two of them and looking forward to receiving them. I have two questions for you if possible: 1. Do you know when Roland plans on filling the orders and 2. You say it's bluetooth. Will that allow a person playing the instrument to play directly into a speaker that has bluetooth capabalities?

    • @isax.academy
      @isax.academy  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comments. I don't know when the shipping starts I'm afraid. The bluetooth will NOT send the sound of the Aerophone to a bluetooth speaker. There would be too much delay and it would be very difficult to control. The AE=30 send MIDI over bluetooth to play sounds on an external device like a computer or an iPad.

    As a 30+ year synth (kbd) player and 10+ year synth software developer, I have to say your sound demos are maybe the favorite I've ever heard. Clearly you're a towering talent, but I wonder if there's something about the wind interface that simply lets you go places a keyboard can't? Or is there some amount of practice a keyboard player could do with the mod wheel, bend wheel, and maybe a foot pedal or something to get as nice a result? I think I have to bookmark you and just try to copy your lines on keys and see what I can do.

      Alistair, thanks for your response. I am mostly interested in setting up a set list with the AE-30. I can handle the backing tracks, and amplification. For example, if I have a set list of songs to play, and I have this set list in backing tracks that I play sequentially, I would like to match the AE-30 "scenes" to the backing track playlist... so I can play the AE-30, song after song, without having to fiddle searching the instrument for each sound/scene. The preselected scenes would be synchronized to the set list.

    Hello Alistair... love your vidoes and this one follows suit! Since you have the ability to "influence" and give direct feed back to Roland, please ask them to put a "microphone" in the mouthpiece so that the player can "hum" while playing to make it growl like a real sax. I have a AE-10 and I LOVE it, but this is the probably the biggest thing I wish was present; the thumb joystick is awkward for me... I use is well as a pitch bend, but when the same control is used for growl, sometimes I accidently bend the pitch by acciently... Just a thought... again, love your videos and you are a big part of why I now own a n AE-10! Cheers!

    • @isax.academy
      @isax.academy  3 года назад

      I wonder if a mic would just pick up all the sounds not just a players hum and therefor be unusable? Have you tried using the app to disable pith bend on the thumb lever so you don't accidentally trigger it?

    • @vmontijo
      @vmontijo 3 года назад

      @@isax.academy Hi Alistair... actually I use the pitch bend more than the "growl" so I wouldn't want to do that, but thank you for the suggestion. I feel confident that the master minds at Roland could "tune in" a microphone that could distinguish the player's "humming", but again just hoping you might use your "influence" with Roland and see if they seem receptive or balk at the idea. I am an engineer, so I feel quite confident their engineers could create a solution for this... usually just a matter of selling the idea that this would be a worth-while addition... it certainly would be the first in the EWI world to offer this feature? Thanks again for all your efforts and videos! Vm

Do you find that it's easier to play double-tounging and fast consecutive tongue attacks on here? I find such heavily articulated passages to be much harder on AE-10 than on an actual sax, and I'm not sure if it's due to the sensor itself or due to the mouthpiece.

I believe there are another 9 wind instruments also so, for me, very limited in it's target market/usage. The Pro has 600+ tones so your world is only limited by your imagination and, in my case, my limited talent(!) and that, I feel, is why there is such a huge difference in price. Or can you change octaves by "overblowing" into the mouthpiece, as with a real flute? Secondly, and related, can the breath sensor sense both "velocity" and "volume" of air independently? Or is there just a simple "breath pressure" sensor? For example, on the flute one can play with a wider and slower air stream for a mellow sound, or a narrow and faster air stream for a bright but still quiet sound. Is the same thing directly possible on a wind synth? Or would I have to program an alternative controller to change timbre without changing volume? For example, can the "bite" senser be programmed to change timbre? Or is it hard wired to pitch/vibrato?

    • @isax.academy
      @isax.academy  6 месяцев назад

      Hi.
      First answer is no, you have to use the octave rollers. As you know, on a flute the octaves change when the air is redirected slightly higher or lower. The Aerophone can’t detect that.
      The second question is similar. The change of timbre is programmed into the patch or sound. For instance many sounds on the Aerophone will open up filters and modulate the sound as you crescendo. The bite sensor can be programmed to change up to 4 different parameters up and 4 down.
      The Aerophone does send a velocity message as well as breath so sound can change accordingly but it will be a different feel to anything else.
      The Aerophone like any other instrument an imitate certain features of other wind instrument it they are instruments in their own right and should be played as such.
      Hope that helps.

      @@isax.academy Thanks for answering my questions. Very understandable that a wind synth does not emulate all features of a particular "real" instrument, but you demonstrate how a wind synth can still be very versatile and creative, with many articulation options. Thank you!

    Hello! I just wanted to know if the 2 bite sensor modes on the AE-10 are the same as the sax and e-wind functions on the AE-30. And if so, which feels more comfortable and sax-accurate to you, strictly for the bite vibrato capabilities? I am a saxophonist doing scoring with realistic physically modeled midi and the most accurate, sax-like vibrato is the only thing that I’m looking for in choosing one over the other.

    • @isax.academy
      @isax.academy  3 года назад

      The modes are the same on both. The sax setting is most like a real sax allowing the lip to control the rate and amplitude of the vibrato. The Ewind setting allows for vibrato but automatically centres the pitch after a dip in lip pressure.
      However, the feel of the response is better on the AE-30 in my opinion.
      Having said that we have to realise that nothing can feel exactly like a real saxophone because the oral cavity/ mouthpiece and reed plays such an important part on the real saxophone which the Aerophone can’t imitate. .

    Thank you! Thank you! Question about the key response. I have an ae10 that I stopped using because of the amount of pressure it takes to press the keys. I often will not quite press hard enough on a button for it to click and engage. Is this instrument any different in that regard? You say it’s smoother but is that just in reference to the clicking noise or is it smoother feeling as well? My background is with the Yamaha controllers going back to the wx7 which I loved and played professionally for many years. The combination of breath, lip and key response worked for me - albeit with lots tweaking on the lip response. Sadly Yamaha has dropped the ball. The ea10 comes closest to the wx’s with good lip and breath response but the key action requires too much pressure for me. I think what I want is an ewi with a Roland mouthpiece :) Thanks again for the excellent review.

      Hi. I'm surprised to hear you say that. I've always found the keys to be easy to press but I guess I come from a saxophone background. The keys on the AE-30 are smoother to press down and feel more positive both in terms of the physical movement and the contact with the sensors to change notes. Again with the octave keys I have not found that the octave keys are at all hard to press down. Perhaps some of the photo-type instruments can vary slightly.

    Thank you for this breakdown. As someone who is not a sax player, and having had a WX5 for the last 10 years, I might be looking to upgrade, but I'm concerned about fingering systems. I dislike palm keys. I know why they're there, but on a wind controller they seem unnecessary. Does this have some "pure EWI" fingering modes on it where the palm keys are 100% optional or potentially as trill keys? I'm just looking to see if it has a more flexible electronic fingering system that isn't arbitrarily attached to acoustic instruments. (I'm a bassoon player, as you can see).

      Sorry you’ve had problems. I’ve tested many of these and not had any issues with sticking keys. Perhaps hand positioning is an issue?

    Can this be played through a bluetooth speaker?

      The sounds of the Aerophone can't be sent over Bluetooth. There would be too much delay. The AE-30 send MIDI over bluetooth to play external gear like a laptop or iPad. You can sen something like a backing track from an iPad to the AE-30 and this sound will be mixed with the internal Aerophone sounds so you can play along with it.

    I imagine this thing controls midi well. The most cost effective way to get a GREAT natural sound is using the AE-10 with the SWAM software. I don't know how much better the control aspect of this would be for $1500. The company that makes SWAM needs to partner with Roland or someone to make the holy grail instrument for us doublers. I want to NOT have to bring 10 cases with me and set them all up with stands, reeds and tuning. I was very disappointed that my AE-10 did not have a proper alto flute. If I want synth sounds I play a keyboard. I don't "get" the synthesizer/saxophone thing at all and I think this may be a market mistake but I'm just a doubler, who knows. The question is will anyone buy this and not send it back, I guess. I'm on my third AE-10 as the first two had defective sensors.

      The synth-sax thing is great for me because my keyboard skills will never approach my sax skills for playing synth solos in my compositions.

      Don't forget Samplemodeling which started the highest quality virtual instruments, and specifically designed it for wind controllers, not just for keyboards.

      The EWI was first conceived to play synth sounds, because guess what? You can't do that on a saxophone! And you can't compare it with a keyboard, unless you have a breath controller, but it's still not the same thing.
      I don't get why you would want to play sub par "acoustic instruments" if you can play the real deal. I can see the need for it for wedding gigs and such if that's your line of work. But then why not just play the saxophone and perhaps the flute? Not a lot to carry around. Rather sound good on two real instruments than ridiculous on 10 fake ones.

    The white plasticky look of the 10 was very toyish-looking. They certainly improved the aesthetics on the 30.
    I think the decision IMHO comes down to the breath sensor. All the nuances of playing reeds or brass or flute are what counts.

    So key click is a problem if you use the lame ass built in speaker then..........so that is an issue right? Why have a speaker if you can't hear it due to the key noise?

      I don't think that is what Alistair is saying! The speakers v key click are two separate issues. If you play without an amp you will still be able to hear well, what he is saying is that this only represents around 5-10% of it's potential; an amp opens up a whole new world. The key clicking is permanent 'come what may' but as a player using an amp/headphones you will not be bothered by this irritating clicking but your audience may depending on your genre. Loud, synthy, jazz/impro - no probs; soft, classical stings, or ethnic tones - big probs!!!

      Great video very informative.I too have the small hands problem.
      I can cope on the finger notes but the octave key arrangement is a real problem as my thumb picks up the other octave keys
      when crossing up the octave.
      .I gather the octave keys are raised on the 30 but I haven’t been able to find any where I can check one out.
      I purchase the 10 last October and was told there was a new model coming out shortly.
      Due to the lock down I couldn’t return the 10 within the four week return policy although I had been told
      they would take it back if I purchased the 30.
      In the event because I was two weeks over the time period.
      They wouldn’t even take it back at an exchange price so I am stuck with it.
      So much for their first class after service claim.
      Many thanks for your videos.
