    Review of The Bluecoats - North vs South on PC. This game is a remake of the 1989 classic North and South on the Amiga (itself based on Les Tuniques Blues), and just looking from the screenshots you might think its the same game with newer graphics. Which is exactly what I was expecting, however don't be fooled! The copied most of the original, but left out the best bits! This is NOT North & South...
    Why I changed name from AgingJedi to MarkGFL • The End of AgingJedi? ...
    The Story of Oake and AgingJedi • The Story Behind Oake ...

      Indeed I don't only remember it, I played the original game on my old Amiga 500 just a few month ago! Yes I have the old bird still in working order, more or less...
      I was hyped when I saw the thumbnail, and then my reflection of the new is pretty much the same as yours.

      played this endlessly on the Atari ST and you are right it was better in the old game. In fact I still have the game and the ST collecting dust. Might have to break it out and power it up for a trip down memory lane.

    I remember playing the original game with one of my friends in 2001 or 2002. I agree with you over the matter of the forts : conquering a fort is now pretty impossible, even in easy mode. The old version was much cooler and easier on this point. For all the rest, I think the remake is very good.

  • @paulabbott3601
    @paulabbott3601 6 лет назад +2

    North & South, Many hours played, many years ago. 2 player vs mode was the best, you could (and would have to) walk into rocks or buildings to bunch up your troops, to get through enemy fire or cross a narrow bridge. There was always a rush to some states on the map to gain an early advantage. The fort assault and train robbery was always tough for the defender, but always fun.

    • @MarkGFL
      @MarkGFL  6 лет назад +1

      We used to create 3-stack armies in 2 player mode then bunch up the men like you said and have mass infantry shoot-outs. Ah, the good old days!

  • @roycesilvester6020

    In theory, I don't mind the new ideas for the Fort sections - the new Train sections seem a bit pointless, but they are both changed I assume to allow for point and click/touch controls for mobile gaming. The Fort shoot outs seem like they could have been a fun addition, if handled well.

  • @Gewyne
    @Gewyne 6 лет назад +4

    I imagine it's point and click so it can be played on a mobile phone as well.They probably see more sales on that platform seeing the game is pretty dated and basic.

  •  3 года назад

    > Why do that?
    Because it's a mobile game, and you can't do those minigames on phones. They replaced them by something that makes sense for phones. The stuff that works for phones already all stayed. There's really zero mystery here.

    I remember with the old amiga version, if you played 2 player, you had a 'cheat' in the battles if you used the joystick. You could mow down the whole enemy army with just the cavalry by holding the button and just strafing up and down the field until everything was dead. Totally disappointed with the battles in the remake.

    • @MarkGFL
      @MarkGFL  3 года назад

      I remember doing that. As long as you didn't get whopped by a stray cannonball you were sorted. I also remember odd occasional bugs where your back rank of infantry would kneel instead of the front and mow the front rank down with their volley! Also one where the cavalry seemed to sabre themselves and the whole 3 would fall off their horses when you pressed the attack button.

      Note that the review is from 2018 and describes remake available then - the version available on Steam since 2020 is apparently different to some extent (in addition to changing "vs" to "&" in the title). According to reviews from Steam users, the player now eg. controls units in combat using keyboard keys - so perhaps more of the issues described in this review regarding 2018 version might have already been fixed in the currently available 2020 version. Looks like 2018 version was an early port from iOS version of the game, thus the point&click interface not really suitable for PC (or Amiga ;-) ). (I am still in the process of reading/watching reviews and deciding about the game myself so I cannot share my own experience with the game yet.)

      Nikola Jovanović I use Google Translate to translate some stuff into regional languages. Bit of an experiment to see if it helps with video reach :)

      Well that is nice, but I don't think it worked very well... Links shouldnt be translated and also in title, only word that should be translated is "review". Sorry for criticism, but Google Translate isn't very reliable for translation to my language

    I agree, was a big fan of the Amiga version, but this game is a real turd and an insult to the original game.
