    This moment also further emphasizes the difference between Heimerdinger and the other councilors. Everyone else is in the shadows at the back of the room, elevated high above the crowd where they can make back room deals. Heimerdinger, meanwhile, is in the front row, illuminated by the stage lights as he simply enjoys the performance. He is the only councilor who isn’t corrupt (not saying he’s perfect, he absolutely was out of touch with the situation in Zaun)

    I love the shows perspective on how power corrupts. It’s not that Jayce gains political power and suddenly becomes a megalomaniac. In fact, he never really stops being an idealist trying to help people. The problem is that always sticking to his principles is going to cut him off from the power he needs to better the world in the long run. In order to achieve a theoretical “greater good” Jayce needs to compromise his morals by allowing small “necessary” evils. Unfortunately, he learns how far his morals can bend until they break, when he kills a child in Zaun.

    • @artemiswolfe4308

      @@matthewwatson5029 Oh yeah, that's right. I remember understanding both perspectives. Vi didn't care much because she's used to it and the boy worked for silco. Jayce was messed up, calling the boy an "it" before immediately after saying "him", so he was a bit traumatized at what he'd just done. I think it was good writing in the whole show showing different emotions and animation that conveyed different themes. Really connected the audience to the impact of certain events.

      If anything the whole Zaun moment was him lashing out at realizing he was becoming corrupt and it still not changing anything, he already did the conservative route Heimer taught him, made deals like Medarda adviced him and now all thats left is going ham like Vi is telling him.
      Him killing the kid probably sobered him up to the fact that he went off into the deep end so much he is basically a thug beating on people who don't deserve it due to finally separating Zaun from its problems.
      Hell if you add in LoL as his future he also added a requirement/limit to his shockblast since it doesn't get the huge explosion until the shot passes a Hex Gate in the game

    Heimerdinger in this scene is interesting to me. When I first watched, something felt off about him, but couldn't put my finger on it. Rewatches made me realize this whole thing shows just how oblivious he is. While everyone is scheming behind him, he's blissfully enjoying the show, a metaphor for his lack of awareness of both the corruption of the council, and of the state of Zaun

    • @DeathMessenger1988
      @DeathMessenger1988 4 месяца назад +2

      Not only his lack of awareness, but willing and willful dismissal of things that agree with his worldview and comfort zone.
      Jayce is being forced to cut deals, deal with criminality, explore dangerous applications of Hextech and eventually go to war against Zaun (who's rebelling over their immense poverty and Piltover's elitist tyranny)... because Heimerdinger refused to acknowledge, look into these uncomfortable situations and act accordingly. The storm is happening right around him, but he's blind to it and enjoying a distracting performance while the world darkens around him. Jayce did his best, but realistically NO ONE can handle every single issue in a city or country's administration and social structure. Mel is not a bad person, but it's Heimerdinger, the oldest and most experienced being in Piltover, that should have been the one guiding and helping Jayce, vouching his actions in front of the other councilors, putting order in the house. As an immortal/long-lived creature, he dismisses all issues as "temporary", with no care about HOW things develop for us poor mortal beings. Every issue and problem is an "unfortunate tragedy or incident" that he never has to fully experience or resolve.
      This is even more poignant when he'd expelled from the council. He makes his grand righteous speech, eyes closed, thinking everything will play out as he thinks things should... and then Jayce ends the character and throws every single thing wrong in Piltover and Zaun right at his face, and Heimerdinger can't come up with a single rebuttal or justification. He can't even muster up a parting warning or protest.

    I love this analysis! I used to watch Schnee's videos, in one of which he talked about Mel's gold representing mercy as opposed to Noxian red violence. With this perspective, we could say that Mel's commitment to not violently getting her way necessitates her underhanded political machinations if she will wants to hoard power. Therefore the color that symbolized her merciful nature in childhood is is the same color that symbolizes her corruption as a politician when she's grown up.

    This is such an incredible analysis and I love how you reference Mel always being placed in the centre or above characters in a majority of scenes she shares, that's why it's so captivating when Ambessa is introduced because for the first time, Mel isn't elevated, in fact most, if not all of her scenes with her mother have her on the lower position (i.e.: when Ambessa arrives and Mel meets her, she is standing above her) or slightly shifted to the background (i.e.: the flashback where Ambessa is always seemingly in the foreground when she is sharing the scene with Mel).

    • @cassdraws06
      @cassdraws06 11 месяцев назад +4

      I think it's definitely intentional, believe it or not writers and artists are really encouraged to add these motifs and symbologies to stories. Keep in mind that these people have studied careers about how other people handle symbolism, motifs and visual hints in their own stories. It's not soemthing you're supposed to find out the first time you watch it, more like when you sit down to break down the show into bits and pieces, while you rewatch it or study it. That's what makes Arcane awesome: no matter how many times you watch it again, discovering things like this makes it rewarding, and that's something every artists strives for.

    • @garrelus
      @garrelus 11 месяцев назад +2

      I totally get the skepticism of "maybe the curtains were just blue" But at the same time, I, as a writer myself, feel like it's pretty easy to inject symbolism into the things one creates. As an example, as I was writing a short story, I found myself fine-tuning the length of the sentences, the word choice, even the structure of the text to reflect the PoV character's state of mind. It's minute and inconsequential, which the majority of people would probably never notice, but it makes every detail feel intentional.
      When you have such absolute control over the creation of something, it almost feels a waste to not make everything mean something.

    Jayce sees himself as a champion of the people but he fails to see how out of touch he is with the public’s reality.
    This is shown in his speech where he talks about how his family started from the bottom, by saying his family’s factory made simple tools. Not realizing that them owning a factory makes him upper class. He may have started on the lower end of the upper class be he is certainly a part of it.

    Jayce is sort of newbie in the political world thus he still doesnt see the whole world as they see and Mel tries to show him that the world they are in now is totally different than the he lives in thus the tragic killing of the one child of the chem baron which ignistes the conflict between zaun and piltover. Even if Mel sees a peaceful coexistance between these two worlds she cannot create it without destroying one side or another and she uses Jayce as a meaning to do it

    Have you done a deep dive on that pretty boy that is seen with Mel's mother and in the brothel?
    I remember there being theories he was a spy but I want to hear your thoughts on whether his appearances were significant

      Mel is many things and may be morally gray but evil is not one of them imo. She cares about Zaun and is against war and in general in the third act it becomes pretty clear that she is not evil

      @@xylypotatohead3947something is quite off about the statement. While yes, she might be against the "war", because it is too risky and might change the status quo. I highly doubt she would sacrifice her wealth for the cities to stop existing as they currently are: divided by all means. She just doesn't want to use her mom's methods of running things

    I rewatched Arcane recently and in second watch I really didn't like Mel, iy was a combination of trying to figure out her deeper meanings and her clashing ideals. She doesn't want a war but then brings the idea to Jayce that weapons as a safe guard are a good idea to have just in case.
