House of the a Dragon is still significantly better, but yes, outside of that show, would agree. Andor has had some very slow episodes (the first two) where the overall quality has not been up to the rest of the season. A lot of people I know stopped watching after the first two. It’s the reason why Andor, despite the evident high quality, is far from being a hit for Disney, I’d still argue you could have combined the first two and nothing important would have been lost... and the pacing would have significantly improved.
I 100% agree with Steph. The attention to detail, character development, acting and cinematography is far superior from anything on Disney + and is top tier tv that competes amongst the best from any platform. They have also created a visual Star Wars that feels as real to me as it's ever been. Great writing and execution!
It is really good. But I also feel that Andor is Star Wars made for people who think Star Wars is silly. I almost wish for a Gungan Jedi showing up in an episode just to mess with the "this is Star Wars for grown ups"-audience.
Syril & Dedra’s “relationship” reminds me of Breaking Bad’s Todd & Lydia. The stalker, weird type gushing over the dominant, smart, powerful woman. Finished Breaking Bad btw & it was fantastic
Did anybody else catch the quick cut of the door closing on Dedra and Bix, and then the camera panned to the floor to catch a trooper marching by? Completely reminiscent of Leia's interrogation in Episode IV.
Never have I watched Steph be so into a Star Wars show. I’m loving her take each week. Andor and Sith Council go hand in hand in what I watch on Wednesdays!
Speaking of the Sith needing to be more terrifying than the rest of the Empire, imagine how frightening a Palpatine calling Mon Mothma into his office scene would be in Andor.
Andor is easily the best written and acted Star Wars show. Its perfectly seemless with Rogue One. It doesn't have that overall classic charm of a Star Wars movie (from Lucas) or the Mandalorian however, this is perfect for what it is...a spy thriller for an adult audience and im loving it. Best show on TV recently after House of the Dragon! I hope the viewing numbers on this vastly improve from word of mouth as the show deserves the eyeballs and recognition as oppose to the recent crap we've seen with Book of Boba and Obiwan!
This really is going to add so much to the Original Trilogy for me - by painting the Empire in such dark and brutal terms, it increases the emotional stakes more than I thought I'd ever see.... I can't think of another show I've seen that makes me feel like grading every episode as 10/10 [Except the old British BBC Classic 'Edge of Darkness']
This show… my god… I’ve been rewatching the episodes already and always have so much anticipation for the new episode every week. I hope they carry on in this way. Elevated, intelligent, gripping Star Wars
Your promo for Trade coffee came at the perfect time! My wife and I needed to try some new decaf coffees and Trade offers a wide variety of them. I look forward to listening to you guys every week. Keep it up!
It is Strange that it's been years since Gareth Edwards has directed a movie but remember that Patty Jenkins didn't direct a movie after Monster until 2017 with Wonder Woman
Very different. Even though there was Oscar stuff, the film wasn't critically loved and didn't make a billion dollar with a franchise. Two very different things.
I agree with Mike about how Vader shouldn't be in Andor because I feel that it'll take away from when he shows up in Rogue One. In that movie, he got involved because the rebel alliance was becoming more of a threat and that the Death Star was being completed. In Rebels, he pops in because Jedi were involved and that he might've known what plans the Empire had for Lothal. So if Vader does show up in Andor, it better be for a good reason. Side note: Thrawn would be a great intellectual final villain for the show
Great discussion Sith Council! 👍I wonder if, early in the episodes 1 or 2 when Mon says to Luthen that she has much to lose, it hits knowing that Vel is her cousin. It is more than money-Mon also considers people which is a different perspective to Luthen and Cinta and Saw who will do whatever it takes. We even see that in Andor until in Rogue One when he shows some compassion with Galen and Jin 🤔So much depth in the writing in this show! 🤯👏
Just wanted to address the point you guys made about the NO ALIENS thing. Just wanted to point out that there's a reason for that, it's because the Empire is racist. They are based on the Nazis, so of course, white supremacy is at play here. The aliens are a lower standard in the galaxy. Most of the ranking officers are all human. And not to get political or anything (wink, wink ;) but it's WONDERFUL that this story is being told by Diego Luna. Just wanted to put that out there. I'm loving this show. Best Star Wars yet IMO.
Syril is so interesting (understatement). Until this episode, we haven’t been privy to the darker areas of his character. Stalking Dedre was something I didn’t see coming, but it’s consistent with what we know about Syril. To Syril, order is power, but he himself feels powerless. Dedre embodies everything he’s desperately yearning for. Poor Syril, however, is so awkward socially, this yearning inevitably manifests as stalking.
I didn’t realize until this week that Beau Williamson from House if Cards is writing some of these episodes and wow can you tell the difference. Love Favreau and Felonious but this writing is next level
LOVE this show! It's darn near flawless. I just hope they continue to do shows like this. There's a place for the goofy stuff like Boba Fett but I need deep and heavy shows like this in Star Wars every once in a while.
Was thinking about this while watching Sith Council today. Perhaps the reports about Bob Chapek telling Kathleen Kennedy to stop announcing film projects and talking about them before they’re past the early development stages, also applies to a series like ‘The Acolyte’. Lucasfilm has a better track record of shows that are announced going into production apart from ‘Rangers of the New Republic’, however it could have been a Disney mandate at Celebration and D23 to put the focus on the other Disney+ series that were either finished or had already begun filming the latest season. Also found an audio interview with Tony Gilroy on the ‘Backstory Magazine’ RUclips channel, where he discusses the first four episodes of Andor. Really interesting, well worth a listen if you haven’t already checked it out.
Dark is still one of the best shows of all time. Many of the important dates in the show were related to the release dates on Netflix. The writing and how everything interconnects between the three seasons is immense.
Kristian, Mike's sound volume is too high in comparison to yours which is too low. I have to turn the volume up to hear you but when I do Mike's sound is way too loud. So please bring your levels up and Mike's down so they're more even. Mic positioning may also be contributing. Because Mike speaks in a more animated way, often becoming louder randomly. Whereas you speak more evenly in a whispered/low monotone. So maybe bring your mic in closer and his further from him. Along with adjusting the levels so they're more even.
I would presume the shows will air in the order they shoot. Mando - Feb Ashoka I would assume Summer 2023 Skeleton Crew - Fall 2023 Acolyte- early 2024 Andor S2 Gilroy said that it will be about 2 yrs roughly from when S1 dropped that we'll get S2
Great show, as always! Ahsoka will absolutely drop at/during Celebration. Similar to Kenobi. The next year in Star Wars is going to be huge. Lots of content to look forward to. Andor has been a fantastic breath of fresh air of a different kind of tone in SW. Tales of the Jedi has been fun. There is some good momentum right now with Mando 3 and Ahsoka right around the corner......I am terrified nervous for The Acolyte. I really hope its done well. This is the show that could absolutely put the next 10 years of Star Wars on an amazing path. Agreed, this series has to have more of a tone of Andor. Needs to be dark , gritty, and fun. Cannot have any of the misses that Book of Boba had (or even some of the misses Deb Chow had on Kenobi, even though I really enjoyed that series). Leslie Headland has her work cut out, and I hope she is the person to execute a Sith series! Edit: Mike, you got me pumped up on the point about The Acolyte filming in England!!! 🤞
Andor is great, it's an adult Star Wars. I think it could be tied in better by just adding more aliens species that we KNOW of (like in the Madalorian) that should populate the Star Wars universe, like the Twi'leks, Rodians etc. it comes off as more Last Jedish in that department. I'm missing what I thought was a human superiority agenda by the Empire.
If The Acolyte is done correctly, they will insert Sith previous to Palps, (I think that Darth Tenebrous, the master of Plagueis makes the most sense) ....as you can then start building and unraveling some of the stories to come of Darth Plagueis, Darth Sidious, etc. If it is led into well, and the series is executed, it could really line up for a ton of content moving forward! Even if just glimpses into a Tenebrous, or even Plagueis, it could set up for a full story of James Lucino's novel "Darth Plagueis".
Now that House of the Dragon is over this is my most anticipated series. The writing and production is so good. I almost thought Star Wars was hopeless. Then Andor showed up.
I usually am team “we need John Williams type music” in the new stuff but the music in this show especially the blade runner style music in the prison scenes is awesome…didn’t think I’d say that
Great show! Just wanted to hop in and say in regards to the Star Wars for kids thing. Skeleton Crew has been confirmed to say that it’s not a kids show. It has kids as the main characters but Jon Watts said it’s not a kids show. It’s for adults
Instead of a Vader moment in the future, I want Mon Mothma to interact directly with Palpatine in some way. Not with him being a Sith Lord tho, but in him acting as a head of state/emperor.
A little off topic but, Dark is a fabulous Series, been really getting into some German and South Korean shows recently. Babylon Berlin is another good one. Will you recommend Dark in Roxy Striar's television segment?
Thank you council for giving us great discussion on a great show. I thought dedra was more concerned than turned on by cereal, felt more like she is struggling to hide what she is really doing in the isb. Who knows such a great show, hope the acolyte is the same tone, the kids who watched star wars in 77, grew up. I appreciate that star wars is for kids, but kids grow up and we deserve adult shows that we can enjoy.
I just read that the actress (Faye Marsay) that plays Vel was also on Game of Thrones seasons 5 & 6 who played The Waif in the house of Faceless Men. I did not recognize her and wouldn't have put that one together myself.
I'm going to enjoy this series even more when I binge all the episodes together in a few months. It's so good, but I know it would be considered even more amazing if all episodes were released at once.
@@joegreene7619 Nonsense? I know more people that are waiting for the series to finish than those who are going through it as the episodes release weekly. I know I would have enjoyed it considerably more if I could have seen all episodes in a week instead of 9.
This show is great because everything is earned. Characters are reacting to events on their own terms , with their own established personalities so the plot progresses organically not because the script says so.... wich is a horribly common problem in movies and it's even more frequent on streaming projects because studios are desperately trying to cut "the fat" out so there's more space for dumb explosions so viewers stop watching their phones with one eye. Studios are so afraid to be boring it's getting insulting.
Great show as usual 👍🏼 Question: won't the multitude of "Star Wars" series projects lose viewers? what series we are watching? and maybe cause boredom and disinterest already started after the last 3 films (which I consider a debacle and a massacre of the franchise)? Thank you for the answer. Review : I don't agree with the title "Star Wars Andor" but it is undeniable that the quality of this series which I consider out of universe and has no "Star Warsien" link or mood, it's in the "science fiction thriller" category and has a certain quality, production and above all, the casting. The talent level of British actors far exceeds the "labeled" Star Wars disney/LF shows shot in the US...But this does not prevent the misunderstanding of the tone direction chosen for this series in the Star Wars universe which moreover I didn't find in lot of scenes of Rogue One, not my preferred spin off... and I believe that Tony Gilroy has an obvious disinterest in the label Star Wars, his talent equals his opportunism to RISE to occasion and do (like a certain RJ) what he wants. And apparently for those in the news queue, like you guys and some fans, enjoying this series and not failing to praise it as the best Star Wars product (again) leaves me speechless, but it seems that the opinion is subjective ... and always from a certain point of view. Thanks again and keep the good mood. 😊
You understand the quality of the dialogue when you realise Beau Willimon is responsible for the writing. The first seasons of house of cards were pure writing quality also as with Andor, there’re is no waste in writer person political views, or catch phrase hopes, just exactly what is required to drive the story forward. For those that think it’s slow it’s probably as they are distracted by their phones due to the tictok attention span. Each line of dialogue and nuance in the characters is important and missed if you don’t pay attention. Some of the best written tv let alone star wars.
great show today everyone! I really enjoy how dark we are getting with Andor really showcasing the vileness of the empire. That news with the rogue one stuff is crazy and weird we are hearing about it so much later. cannot wait to see this prison break next week and unfortunately I think Andy Serkis' character is going to bite it.
If you haven't already, you should watch Star Wars Theory and Marc Fernandez's interview with Gary Whitta (who helped create the story). Gives a ton of great insight into how the movie was created, what it was originally about, reshoots, etc.
Any body ever noticed that since the end of the original trilogy (Return Of The Jedi 1983) the only content that has moved the Star Wars story forward chronologically was the latest Disney trilogy. EVERYTHING else - Lucas' 2nd trilogy, all the animated series', the 2 Disney interstitial feature films, all the live action series' (I don't know enough about comic books or vid games etc. to warrant commenting on them but i'm guessing it's the same) have been prequelizations of other existing content. Andor is an excellent series but it does indicate the great challenge for Star Wars creators because people sooo want the old Star Wars - the look, the sound, the characters, the iconography, etc. But they also want NEW Star Wars and the creators are constantly accused of re-hashing old content or defying the mythology in forward moving projects. I look now at the whole SW universe as equivalent to WW 2 in the sense that a huge element of the film and television industry (Disney right now of course) is always going back to a specific period of time to re-examine and re-contextualize an old story everybody knows, or thinks they know. Sometimes, as with this series, they do a brilliant job, but does beg the question: is Star Wars, especially when regarding the backlash of the most recent trilogy, as a chronological story, ever going to be accepted as an ongoing story?
They did a great job with this show. Looks great, good characters and interesting, mature writing. I would prefer more jedi/sith action, but this is a cool variety of star wars.
There's a question of the meaning to ask about Andor. If they are building parts for the Death Star are we ever going to get to see the actual construction of the Death Star to give some real clarity to the classic scene in CLERKS about the Death Star contractors. Shout out to Kevin Smith 😂
Makes you rethink 'Attack of the Clones'. You see the Separatists actually had legitimate grievances with the Galactic Senate. Palpatine just exposed that rift and exploited it for his purposes, playing both sides with the help of Dooku. His look when Palpatine tells Anakin to kill him wasn't just Christopher Lee over-reacting, I think he was legit betrayed. Dooku's fall was just as much the failure of the Jedi as Anakin's was, but the lines are blurred between good and bad between Republic and Separatists.
@@TheKristianHarloff go to to 6:07 "she just wants to have the upper hand in the IBS." That's not a place anyone wants to have any hand. Haha. Steph is FN brilliant, so funny.
You guys brought up the aliens again today. Do y'all remember the sizzle reel for Andor way back when, and they spent some time in the creature workshop and shouted out the designs? Also, is the lack of aliens in the prison proof of that age-old Empire intolerance? Did they kill 'em instead of rope 'em up for working???
Could be a direction perspective, the acting on the show is so high that having a mask or cgi character could distract from the acting or writing, let's take Serkis for example the reason he was the mvp of the episode is how he sells his emotion through his face and u can see the moment he realizes that the only thing keeping him sane and in place doesn't exist there is no way out, u can see and feel the pain on the eyes.
I really hope it's not some twist where it turns out they were building the Death Star. I hope it's just some regular old parts for some Star Destroyers, or engines for Tie Fighters or something even smaller. Because that is what this show is about. How the giant machine inside the empire makes this life and death drama for completely normal people. The prison isn't commenting on the people building nukes, it's the prison labor that is used for car parts and sweatshops, and amazon workers. The regular people slaving away until death for absolutely nothing.
Just wondering you guys could keep going longer if you wanted to. Would you ever consider making the show a bit longer? I really enjoy it btw Edit: I was watching whilst doing work and didn't even realize it was an hour. Keep doing great guys
Kino(Andy) was playing by the old rules still thinking he was in prison of a republic and not a Fascist Empire, easy to understand when in prison for probably a long time based on being the floor lead. The end he finally realized that the game had changed.
Gilroy said they took ideas for 3 seasons and squeezed it into an expanded 2 season schedule. Originally a season was supposed to be 8 episodes not 12.
One thing people are mentioning which I think is a bit bandwagoning is how we need more "Mature" Star Wars. While I do appreciate the maturity of Andor what I love most is how great the writing. Each scene has dialog that fits the characters and isn't there just to further the plot. What we need in more Star Wars (looking at you Book of Boba and Kenobi) is better writing. Doesn't need to be complex political undertones or some crazy thought provoking thesis. But similar to Kino's Arc we need similar setups in the shows/movies to come where characters speech patterns are changed progressively. Perfect example of what doesnt work is changing around dialog and story beats in Kenobi to "fit" kid Leia in most of her scenes. The chase/capture scene, her somehow being the only one able to crawl in the vent AND fix the door, and the torture scene with Reva.

Andor has the best acting, dialogue and cinematography of any Star Wars content to date. It’s also the best show on television right now.

A little off topic but, Dark is a fabulous Series, been really getting into some German and South Korean shows recently. Babylon Berlin is another good one. Will you recommend Dark in Roxy Striar's television segment?
Harloff please do a Dark discussion show when you’re done!
Great episode of Andor !!!
Steph, you have made me a fan forever. I'll subscribe to whatever you do.
Thanks for another great show guys (and gal)
THANK YOU!
I just read that the actress (Faye Marsay) that plays Vel was also on Game of Thrones seasons 5 & 6 who played The Waif in the house of Faceless Men. I did not recognize her and wouldn't have put that one together myself.
Hooooly crap you’re right!! I thought she looked slightly familiar but couldn’t place her.
Steph: "No one in the empire is getting laid."
Palpatine: "Hold my beer..."
I've hated cereal and his mom throughout this series, but they made me laugh in this episode!!!
🤣🤣🤣
I'm going to enjoy this series even more when I binge all the episodes together in a few months. It's so good, but I know it would be considered even more amazing if all episodes were released at once.
@@joegreene7619 Nonsense? I know more people that are waiting for the series to finish than those who are going through it as the episodes release weekly.
I know I would have enjoyed it considerably more if I could have seen all episodes in a week instead of 9.
Andor feels like if HBO made Star Wars, and I love it!
Totally agree 👏
Was the torture device a precursor to like lobot? His head set? Which the empire uses as “collars” for slaves?
This show is great because everything is earned. Characters are reacting to events on their own terms , with their own established personalities so the plot progresses organically not because the script says so.... wich is a horribly common problem in movies and it's even more frequent on streaming projects because studios are desperately trying to cut "the fat" out so there's more space for dumb explosions so viewers stop watching their phones with one eye. Studios are so afraid to be boring it's getting insulting.
Great show as usual 👍🏼
Question: won't the multitude of "Star Wars" series projects lose viewers?
what series we are watching? and maybe cause boredom and disinterest already started after the last 3 films (which I consider a debacle and a massacre of the franchise)?
Ray Liotta as Chandillan "banker" Davo Skullden!
I cannnnnot wait to see this whole series in one go.
I will do the same.
Wow first great female villain in Star Wars live action. (Ventress not counting since it was animated)...
This show is so good and consistent. And I love this prope development of the empire.... Finally. Now I really want Thrawn novel adaptation!
YUP!
“Never more than 12”.
Discussions on how many episodes to have in a season made it into script.
Ever? Maybe!
Another great ep with harloff and friends
Makes you rethink 'Attack of the Clones'. You see the Separatists actually had legitimate grievances with the Galactic Senate. Palpatine just exposed that rift and exploited it for his purposes, playing both sides with the help of Dooku. His look when Palpatine tells Anakin to kill him wasn't just Christopher Lee over-reacting, I think he was legit betrayed. Dooku's fall was just as much the failure of the Jedi as Anakin's was, but the lines are blurred between good and bad between Republic and Separatists.
Great point about Dedra's number 2, what's the bet she will feel too threatened by him and give him the old "Dr Gorst treatment" 😉
If Andy Serkis goes out during the prison escape you just know he's going to do it in badass style, obviously I hope he doesn't die but never know
He's gonna do 2 spin moves
He's gonna do 2 spin moves
Really dont get why some fans don't like Andor. This is really good TV. Really enjoying this arc. Prison break will be spectacular.
Sooo uhhh… did the power go out in the prison for a sec because the amount of energy used to fry floor 2?
Yup
Mando in Feb Ahsoka in Summer as a followup like how Boba Fett was to Mando 2 but closer together, and then Skeleton Key in december
Hey, Kristian. Acolyte takes place 100 years before TPM. 🤙🏼
Ah, thought it was 50
I love that Steph called the Imperial Security Bureau IBS. 🤣
Hahaha
@@TheKristianHarloff go to to 6:07 "she just wants to have the upper hand in the IBS." That's not a place anyone wants to have any hand. Haha. Steph is FN brilliant, so funny.
You guys brought up the aliens again today. Do y'all remember the sizzle reel for Andor way back when, and they spent some time in the creature workshop and shouted out the designs? Also, is the lack of aliens in the prison proof of that age-old Empire intolerance? Did they kill 'em instead of rope 'em up for working???
Could be!! Love it if that is the case, again attention to detail!
I think that's the case.
During the Senate scene, I was waiting for someone (in the Senate) to yell out, "WHAT IS SHE PROPOSING?!!!" lmao 😂😂😂
IF ONLY!
Dedra reminds Syril of his father or how he imagines his father would be if he were around. My man definitely has a quiet complex going on.
(even as this was already mentioned)
*S.S* experiencing these weekly installments on "Jaby" - merely enhances the rewatch( fair use ~ wise )
Just wondering you guys could keep going longer if you wanted to. Would you ever consider making the show a bit longer? I really enjoy it btw
Edit: I was watching whilst doing work and didn't even realize it was an hour. Keep doing great guys
I think an hour is the sweet spot.
Kino(Andy) was playing by the old rules still thinking he was in prison of a republic and not a Fascist Empire, easy to understand when in prison for probably a long time based on being the floor lead. The end he finally realized that the game had changed.
Yup
Dark is amazing
Gilroy said they took ideas for 3 seasons and squeezed it into an expanded 2 season schedule.
Originally a season was supposed to be 8 episodes not 12.
Slow start , but boy did it pick up with ep 5. Quite possibly the best Star Wars series yet.
Easily.
Well I think it is a mixture of both.
