    Monica in reply to your question, are there a way that you can make the rocket travel higher and stay up in the air longer?
    There are a number of ways. One way would be to build up more air pressure inside of your bottle. To do this you would need to use a much tighter fitting cork or build a release mechanism for your rocket. A release mechanism would hold the rocket on the launcher until you pull a string or press a button, and would work the best. A tighter fitting cork is much less effort but may not work as well. Be careful with both of these methods because too much air pressure inside the bottle could cause it to explode before it even launches.
    Another method would be to run tests to find the perfect amount of water to add inside your bottle. If you can find enough water to make it go high, but not too much that it weighs down your rocket that will also increase the height that it flies.
    A way to slow the rockets decent would be to design and add a deployable parachute. If you want to do this method, I would suggest searching on google for tutorials.
    There are probably more ways to get the rocket to go higher, if anyone has any suggestions reply to this post. I hope that these ideas will work for you and let us know how you do in your competition.

    • @TheSciGuys
      @TheSciGuys  9 лет назад +1

      darren That is exciting that you are doing this experiment. I doubt soda would change the height the rocket would fly. What would make it higher is adding more pressure and finding a perfect balance between pressure and liquid amounts.

    A couple of safety things I feel should be addressed in this video- when cutting anything with a scalpel or utility knife you should be using a steel ruler, this not only protects your fingers from the blade, but it also ensures that your lines will be straight and not wiggly. When cutting with a knife you should NEVER cut towards yourself, always cut away or at right angles to your body- if cutting through something tough or thick you can be putting a lot of pressure onto the blade and once it is free from the material it is incredibly easy for the blade to fly into you if you are cutting towards yourself- I got a scalpel blade in my leg cutting in this way- it's a lazy and unsafe method Otherwise, an awesome video- I hope to use this in teaching a class of p7's. Thanks!

    also in our water rocket challenge,the winner is measured by the range at which rocket lands instead of height,so would u suggest any improvement in aerodynamics of rocket or rocket launcher that would make it land farther

    • @TheSciGuys
      @TheSciGuys  10 лет назад +1

      brhamjyot singh sandhu If you are building a rocket and looking at range, I think that angling it at a 45 degree angle will help to get the distance. You may want to play with the weight of the nose cone because if it's too heavy it will pull it down quickly and if it's too light it may not move the centre of gravity enough to keep your trajectory.

    My daughter is going to do this for her school science fair. I think we'll do a few attempts at home just to be sure she has a good idea how to do it and what to expect. Should we use a different bottle each time or can we reuse? Also, about how much radius would you recommend for launch to safely be away from cars and the school building? Thank you, great video!

    • @TheSciGuys
      @TheSciGuys  10 лет назад +1

      Lisa Umbilal That is exciting!! You can use the same bottle each time as long as the bottle is not ruptured. The distance you should be away from the school and cars depends on the direction and strength of the wind. If there is just a light, then 50 feet should be enough but as the wind gets stronger that distance grows. Also our build of rocket is pretty light and I cannot see it doing much damage to a vehicle or building.

    • @andrewtorrens7790

    • @tabemash0594
      @tabemash0594 6 лет назад

      Manuel Martinez you need to create a cushion so that a lot of energy goes towards deforming the cushion rather than into the egg. A great way to understand this is by researching momentum and impulse.

    • @TheSciGuys
      @TheSciGuys  10 лет назад +1

      brhamjyot singh sandhu Well there are a few options that are simple. What you really need is something, solid or liquid, that will turn into a gas. You will also have to play with how snug the cork is so that it's snug enough that it will still shoot out before the glass breaks. Off the top of my head a few items you could try are baking soda and vinegar or putting a piece or two of dry ice in there. The dry ice may weaken the glass because of it's temperature but might be a good option. What types of methods were you thinking of using?

    • @TheSciGuys
      @TheSciGuys  10 лет назад

      chuleng voluptous Yes it's ok to use cardboard but you may need to replace it if it gets too wet to hold up the rocket or if it sends the rocket in strange directions when wet. You can try adding more water, or removing some to improve the height. It's something that you will have to try out and see what works best.

    • @TheSciGuys
      @TheSciGuys  10 лет назад

      Jane Ashcraft It tends to bounce when it hits the ground, nose down. The goal with the tennis ball is to help balance the weight and shift the centre of gravity of rocket. The tape over the ball helps to produce an aerodynamic nose cone. It's an added benefit that the ball can also partially protect the rocket and absorb some of the fall.

    So im doing this in my science class but the challenge is that i have to add an egg to the rocket how do you think i can do that, because the egg can't break part of the assignment is to see how high it goes and how good the landing is going to be. help me? Also any tips?

      Nanci Melgoza Ooooo.....that is a tough one. I remember doing that in Junior high and most of our eggs broke. Maybe try making a pod for your egg with bubble wrap and a parachute. The challenge is to get the rocket high enough, and get the parachute to deploy early enough that it will open and slow the eggs fall. You could run some test flights with a golf ball to see if your parachute will deploy.

      +Yuki dairo You could use foam or cardboard but you might need to add something with a little weight.

    Do bike pump pins/nails have sizes? or just the same?

    • @TheSciGuys
      @TheSciGuys  10 лет назад

      fire fly Nails will come in a variety of sizes but I think the bike pump pins are usually universal in size. Try and find a nail that is about the same thickness as the bike pin.

    What's the purpose of the tennis ball?

    • @TheSciGuys
      @TheSciGuys  9 лет назад

      +JuryFive Cinco The purpose is to shift the center of gravity of the rocket so that it will fly better. It will also provide a little protection when the rocket hits the ground.

    Hi, can I replace the tennis ball with clay?

    • @TheSciGuys
      @TheSciGuys  8 лет назад

      +Nur Syasya Sure that will work to lower the center of gravity but won't work to absorb the landing as well.

    Could you add a parachute somehow

    • @ryanoverton6624
      @ryanoverton6624 3 года назад

      Yeah! Attach a plastic grocery bag tied with some string to the front with tape. Fold it up in a specific way, I believe the same as an actual parachute (a little too detailed explain here) and press onto the top of the bottle as it sits. it will unroll as it begins to fall and fill with air. Pretty cool

    • @TheSciGuys
      @TheSciGuys  10 лет назад

      Raphael Macam You could use cardboard or a form of light plastic. You can use a lot of different materials but it's best to try and use something that is water resistant.

    how is acceleration related to mass&applied force?

    • @charlescuenta6531
      @charlescuenta6531 8 лет назад

      balance

    • @risingle7048
      @risingle7048 8 лет назад +1

      Newton's 2nd Law of Motion, F=ma. Greater force will result in higher acceleration. The mass of the object will influence its acceleration as well. Greater mass will result in less acceleration while objects with smaller mass will result in greater acceleration. Hope this helps.
