Do not be depressed, my good man! Same thing happened to me this past hurricane season in Central Florida (September/October), and I spent a good bit of time performing the same treatments. It only took a couple of weeks for this to get out of control- just as you said! Superb content- please keep it up. You are one of the only few who gets his hands dirty nearly every episode!
Thanks so much, it really means a lot to hear this 🙏🏼 Florida sounds like an amazing place to live , the Tropical climate sounds like it will be just up my alley lol . I just had to take a step back and with the help of comments like yours I could think clearly again and have come up with a solution to get it all done in a better way . Thanks again really really appreciate it 🫂💕
I found "lava rock" in 2 kg bags for $10 Australian at a local hardware store & later found 50kg bags of at the same thing (labelled "Scoria") for $25. Also found cheap large perlite in large bags at an agricultural store and cheap leca (in 20kg bags) at a small hydroponics shop.
Thanks for this I will ask around for Scortia . For some reason South Africa does not bring in the large size perlite even when we were running the large orchid nursery we were unable to get the importers to bring any in . Leca in South Africa is not used in mass agriculture and seems to be limited to decorative uses which keeps the prices up . For all the advantages of living in a third world country there are also disadvantages . I have had a chance to relax a second and think 🤣since I made the video and with the help and advice of people like you I have come up with a better solution and a cheaper one for the number of orchids I need to repot . It will be easy to find some broken clay bricks that I can break down further that I can use as a filler with Charcoal and Leca . Thanks again 💕🫂
This video was great! Living in Miami I know humidity is crazy. I love the way you took a step to combat the fungus. That is why I love growing my catts in lava rock and clay “holey” pots. It’s very cheap and easy to find in Miami. Now I’m starting to think that when I spray them for fungus it’s not enough coverage, I like your style of dunking the whole plant.
And with clay holey pots and lava rock when they all rooted in it will be easy to dunk 💯❤️ Appreciate your feedback and sharing. The community can learn a lot from you too 👍
Thank you once again. As I'm new or orchids and have inherited the neighbours, they are all growing in a similar spot in my yard as hers, outside. We had our first rain event 1wk plus and I was so worried, and didn't really know what to do. I took them all under cover after the week and won't let them stay out as long again. I do keep a close eye on them, unfortunately when I was doing the initial pot ups from probably 15yrs in the same pot, purhased 'orchid mix' from the local hardware which I didn't realise had been stored for as long as it had. Its a balancing act now, would like them to hang out until next spring before repotting with a much better mix from an orchid supplier. I though they might be ok for a couple of years, but really worried about the bark souring and holding too much mosture. They are, at the moment, all putting on new growth. No signs of flowers, but I think I should concentrate on healthy plants first. I already have eco fungacide so shall start spraying as prevention in our humidity.
Looks like you have things under control , if they are putting on new growth now and are able to get better media then repot those that are sending out new roots . I hope this helps .
Hello Peter,😢 I am so sorry 😢 for what happened as an orchid grower that is so frustrating. living in Florida with humidity and bugs I can only use harsh chemicals. Too bad you live so far away I will come and help . make sure you have a couple martinis tonight. 🍸🍸🍸You deserve. It is not your fault. Love your channel.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
yes here in florida it's now dry season , until June. If you can't get lava rocks buy some terracotta tiles and break them , unless we can order you some and ship it to you.
Wow 🫂💕 thanks for the thought we really appreciate that , I think shipping to South Africa would cost a small fortune . It is just the sheer number of orchids we have to repot quickly , so I think we will just pot as many in LECA as possible to start with and then use charcoal for some and the rest will go into bark charcoal mix until we slowly transfer them all to an inorganic media .
I grew in charcoal for 3 years. Worked great but I didn't repot in 3 years and it got really acidic and almost finished off my roots! Nowim growing some in broken clay bits... Mostly mounting on cork. Works great! The plan is to repot as little as possible...
Thank you so much for your experience with this 🫂💕. I will repot that one right away . I should be mounting more of mine but I like to bring them indoors when in flower lol . So broken clay bricks it is for most. 😁
I was thinking about growing some of my first cattleyas outdoors this year during the spring and summer, but I only have been growing indoors the past three years. I was thinking of using butterfly cages under an umbrella, but I also have a porch that is enclosed which I used last year. That porch also has a ceiling fan and it is eastern and southern facing (northern hemisphere). I might even be able to get away with direct sunlight sometimes since I live in Connecticut.
Oh yes they will love those butterfly cages as that will give them all the air movement in and around them that they love . Sometimes the temperature day night differences outside help the orchid flower better as they are often a little bit bigger than indoors . Happy growing 💕
Thank you for this very informative video, fungus is the bane of a lot of growers, love the videos as they help with controlling a lot of problems with the information you depart to us, I think I am i the same c limate (latitude) (Aust.) as your climate.
Thank you for watching and we really appreciate your feed back 🫂💕 We are glad that you are getting value out of our content . Happy growing and may the New Year bring you beauty and blessings in abundance .
This is just the initial phase of the fungal attack , these videos will help you identify different types of black spots on your orchid as there are several reasons ruclips.net/video/-AR0AeaOI4A/видео.htmlsi=CaJR9qFttj2taglx ruclips.net/video/hbVW1UQOb5s/видео.htmlsi=yETiEgpnZCa3oZI2 ruclips.net/video/aeZNwlC2NRM/видео.htmlsi=-0utM9wWPa5CdLmr there are 1 or 2 other ones on our channel too if these don't help just ask and I will send you the link to the others 👍💕
yes but these ones were pre LECA and LECA is almost as expensive as lava rock here . All these products are imported into South Africa so some of our special ones are already in the LECA mix but the rest are still mainly in bark. I should bit the bullet and just plant as many as I can each month into LECA as I can afford and leave bark out altogether then that will also solve the problem long term . Thanks for making me think and not just react rashly lol . but I still have to repot all immediately 🤣what a pickle I got myself into 🤣
Im sorry, my friend. Unfortunately a larger collection means harder lessons. But a hard lesson need never be learned again. And i know you knew better, and thats the worst part about these things. But you did what did for reasons you had then. Things coukd have gone as you believed they would had you gone the other path. But the important thing, is you are dealing with all of the results and consequences, and that includes all the ones you cannot control. Its not within our power to completely do things with hindsight vision and to predict in all cases the exact scenerio that will play out. A real plant passionist, like yourself, will do their best and youre doing exactly as a perfect plant parent could for your plants, despite the difficulty, and maximum applied emotional and physical effort. Best wishes and fret no more than is necessary. Though i do believe feeling is what makes the good guys, the really good guys, the best. :) You got this. P.S. older bricks are excellent sources of media i believe also. They hold and weep water excellently. In mixture with charcoal should suffice fune in place of lava rock. I know not nearly as lightweight but if thats giving tou good results, i say stick with it.
Thank you for your kind words and support, I really appreciate it 💕🫂 Yip it is just heads down , film a video tomorrow for Sundays up load and then the fun can start in ernest .

amazing how fast fungus cat take hold
it makes me want to cry 😘
Pumice is good too, in case you can hold of it. It's light weight and usually sold in pond related shops ❤
Thanks for the tip! I never thought to ask for pumice for some reason lol . I will definitely do a price check on it . Thanks again 🫂💕
I do my best to keep on top of the situation with my orchids but don’t have that many sorry to hear what happened 😢
It is all getting sorted now thanks for your concern ❤️

We will just knuckle down and get it done. My own fault anyway 😆
Didn’t you used to add LECA to your Cattleya mixes? I think I started doing it after I saw you, and I have had very good results since then.😊
