I think the double tap on the Start/Stop is a safety mechanism to turn off the engine. Just like you can turn the ignition key to stop on the motorway, you have the option to turn off the engine in case of emergency. And let's be honest, it is highly unlikely that you would accidentally tap the button twice.
Btw, if you hold the button for 3 seconds, the ignition will shut completely down. Reason is the same.

    • @mehmetocak6849

what are those emergency situations? ( that may require complete shutdown while driving with 12 0kmp/h ? )

@@mehmetocak6849 for example after crash i would appreciate the possibility to turn off the engine and disconnect from electricity.
And the double tap or holding for 3 seconds is actually what a panicked driver would do when he crashed and the engine is still running

First, Passat is no match to Mondeo in terms of handling and suspension. Second, 6.2/100km is what I average from 2.0 tdci Mondeo, so this hybrid is quite good. And third (the fun fact), did You know that estate version of this generation Mondeo actually has less boot space (below boot cover) than sedan/hatch?

@@CharllesC78 Cool! And now let's just talk about real world fuel economy - town, motorway and some countryside driving. My trip computer shows 5.9 and that is set from new (88.000km). You always get some 0.2-0.3 liter inaccuracy with these computer estimations, so I end up at ~6.2/100. Lets assume, that BMW is more efficient (which is), but 4.9/100 is not realistic under mixed conditions and we both know that ;)

Ive had both the passat and the Mondeo as company cars, I will be fully honest when I say the passat is nowhere near as good to drive and nowhere near as comfortable or quiet and also the Mondeo exterior is miles better looking. Vw really need to up their game. I currently have a new facelift Mazda 6 which is much better then both the Ford and vw to drive, wish it was as quiet as the Ford though.

Hardly ever see Mondeo on the road any longer in the UK. The assumption is that every one I do see is driven by a rep for some large company. They might as well give up building the Mondeo. I believe that they are actually doing just that in the USA.

How's this for eerie timing? I was nosying on the old Facebook when I seen an advert for one of these, and I thought I'll fire up the old RUclips and I swear to God,this was in my notifications. If I was an unmarried obsessive stalker,I'd write a song about you,in an Eminem stylee of Stan, but enough of my nonsense! In a former life I drove a taxi, and something like this would've been ideal, but Downpatrick is the hilliest town in the North, and this car produces the torque of an engine half it's size. Would suit a city centre like Dublin or London. I'll ask the wife for £30 grand if I can't flog my good kidney. Top man,top vid! Bit of light relief before going out to do a shift on dad's taxis!!

I drove one as a rental in seattle, washington with a lovelyy chrome grille and LED lighting, but it is called a ford edge with the usual USA auto version with a swivel dial for drive modes. Took me a few minutes to figure out how to start it, however it moves on electrical power and is therefore silent. It was a great car to drive and even got me in trouble by the cops for speeding. Let off with a warning. I found the acceleration slow and brake pedal a little hard to push down with a few cm of dead zone.

The double tap has been a thing for along time in the fords. I remeber seeing an American channel doing it in I thing the explore (the larger kuga), or may be a fusion.
Can't recall his channel, think he was a dutch guy that emigrated, and was car sales guy but also trying to start a channel of his own. He would do experiments like, what happens if you turn your car off, or force it in to reverse etc.. Stuff no one should do. He was rather interesting.

I wonder if ford is going to discontinue the monedo after 2020 considering the fusion was disconnected in the us and the galaxy and s max will be discounted Europe because people want cars on stilts.
Might explain the lack of effort put into the hybrid.

  • @howardkerr8174
    @howardkerr8174 5 лет назад

Interesting: in US market Fusions Ford has done away with the shift lever. The shift lever was changed out a few years ago for a rotary knob, vaguely similar to the one Jaguar employs.
The center console is similar to the one used by the Fusion, yet isn't exactly the same. The area between the shift lever and the touchscreen, I believe, is enclosed so that is different.
And this is more of a correction: I believe the Ford Fusion Hybrid/Mondeo Hybrid use an E-CVT, and NOT a cvt....there is a difference. The E-CVT is a planetary geared transmission, the cvt is not planetary.
And you are correct, that gas engine sounds like an angry leaf blower.
Finally, my local Ford dealer is advertising 2018 Fusion "S" hybrids at several thousand dollars LESS than the equivalent 2019 Fusion S as a gas only car...not sure why, but in the US the hybrid Fusion is a sales dud. As a consequence, I can buy a 2018 Fusion S hybrid for the equivalent of £12,000 BEFORE taxes (7% of price) and registration fees and insurance.

Reason for the boot loss is it was never designed to have a battery. Note reps who do lots of city driving and long commutes with stop start traffic might find it works if their boot just needs to take a laptop , overnight case and a golf bag

  • @jasonandreoli4135

if the batteries went in the floor they would have to uses materials such as hardened steel and kevlar to reduce the risk of penetration in event of a crash as they could explode rapidly. If the majority of the cars you expect to sell are going to be hybrids, like Toyota, then a skateboard chassis is viable however when only a small percentage of the vehicles will have batteries you put them at the furthest place from an accident.

  • @steverpcb

Great review, Bob, very balanced and interesting as usual. I had a 2L Zetec Mondeo a few years ago. Very easy to drive but a bit dull. One thing about it though, was the cavernous boot. I remember loading it up for a family holiday to Norfolk and being amazed at the amount of gear that fit in. You are absolutely right, if Ford have compromised that in the hybrid version, that is very short sighted.

  • @ejmir101
    @ejmir101 5 лет назад

The hybrid variant has been on offer since 2014 in Croatia, so I believe it was also introduced in other countries aswell. It actually does OK mpg, but the automatic transmission is just lazy and confusing for the car itself. It is actually for city, countryside use, the battery shuts down above 80 km/h and refuels with braking, so basic stuff. Stupid thing is actually the fact that various car dealers represent it as a great fuel efficient car for long journeys, in reality the mpg is just usual as most other cars for high speeds. Passat is just to basic now and overly expensive, people seriously need to stop pushing it as a “great car” since the Mazda 6 has just wrecked everything else.

Even ignoring the lack of knobs for the heating controls and no bag hooks it seems to be lacking in almost every department. The boot is useless, the backseat room is not what you would expect, the performance sounds like its a bit woeful. What is there to like? A leather dashboard? That sony screen looks like its O/S came from the 90's. Starting at £30k in the UK, its in a market of its own (a market where nobody buys cars Id expect!). Just bought one, a very nice car for the money just a little slow on acceleration compared to my old mazda 3 diesel 2,2. So far the electric engine seems to kick in at will even when doing 70mph but looking at the inbuilt stats it has so far run around 20% of the time with the electric motor during general driving. Just to add its only looking down at the screen I notice if its either the petrol or electric engine driving as both are of equally low audible levels. Fuel consumption so far is 59.8 miles per (UK) gallon as opposed to my Mazda 3 diesel which gave 57 MPG..

Nice review as ever Bob. I really liked a previous generation Mondeo 2 litre petrol I had, but the present car is a tad too long for me, and in this hybrid vignale trim is too expensive and (as you pointed out) loses practicality due to that awful boot step.
The car is a total "no" from my PoV: even after the depreciation has made it a decent 2nd hand buy, that compromised boot will always be a problem. Sadly this is Ford showing us why they are falling behind in the game, and ultimately why they are stopping car sales in the US. I just hope the Fiesta and Focus survive. Oversized & overweight SUVs should have no place in an environmentally aware future, but this seems the only European relevant segment Ford seems interested in.

I wouldn't buy this car. It doesn't excel in ANY way over the competitors. I had this car for 2 weeks as a hire car while my Pug 407 2.0 Diesel was being repaired (crash damaged). I hypermiled the mondeo and got a grand total of 42.5mpg (6.65l/100km). That's simply horrible when my Pug could easily get 65mpg. Best part is, both weighed the same! Stick with the normal diesel and you'll get better fuel economy, more boot space (that battery pack is awkwardly shaped). Or just get something else!

As they are top of the sales market in most segments, they have just 'rested on their lorals' far to long. Both them and vauxhall are miles behind anyone else in the market.
Them dials in this Mondeo have been in use for about 10 years plus. And they look it. They won't realise untill sales drop off a cliff, and them they wont have the income to change anthing.
skoda and Seat I see as fords main competitor, or rather threat, they sell similar cars, but are far nicer inside. Them we have Peugeot and they are killing the 'styling' arm.
Them this vinale time is Ugly and knocking on the price door of the next segment up.
The whole vinale line makes zero sense tbh. It does to ford, as they are selling the same crap for alot extra. But for that money you could buy the skoda suberb redline, with is very nicely kitted out, has everything and more that the mondeos offers , and alomast 300hp.
Or you could get a mid level 3 series and A4 or even the similar merc. For the price of this Mondeo with a leather dashboard. Lol

10 years ago it was the Citroën DS line that was making stuff that look 10 years ahead of ford in thd interior department. For hasn't change anything much since then. Now everyone else (bar opel/Vx) has caught up with the DS interior style. Pug even surpassed it.
