Just did mine. Perhaps the most assinine design in the history of customer-accessible hatches. Changing the oil filter is a lot easier. Made me want to trade it on the spot.
I've watched a handful of videos on how to change the cabin filter and I must say, yours was the most clearly and concisely explained and demonstrated. Thanks for sharing.
Those were a pain for me, getting them out and back in, and then one of the plastic tabs on the air cabin door snapped off too 🤦🏻♂️ even if I buy a new one, it’s still way cheaper than paying for the labor I guess
The engineers only have so much time to design. If they had a longer time I am sure they could have made it harder! It's a cabin air filter sherlock- should be easy peasy. After changing the plugs on my 2015, I am surprised they didn't put additional locking pins on the white pins, plus another hidden fastener or two just to make it sporting.
Well, I had NO idea we had cabin air filters!!! Where have I been all my life? I've NEVER changed one in all my years! 😲 I saw it on Tik Tok so I googled it to see if it was a joke! 🤣 I'm so glad I did and so glad I found you!! I guess I'll do that tomorrow!!! Thank you!!!
Thanks for your knowledge. Clear video and lighting. I left the retractable clip hanging. It looks like the previous owner did as well. The air flow on the old one was going in the opposite direction too, lol.
Thank you for the informative video, my Duratec 35 engine did the Waterblock die so we are replacing it with a Duratec 37 (Same thing, bigger bore) figured I should do the air filters too.
What exactly is the purpose of that retaining cord? I find on my Taurus the box opens and closes just fine without that hooked up. Seems everyone of the vides I watch, I pick up some more tips that the last one didn't have. You showed a much easier way to pop that air cleaner door off. Thanks.
@@PYR-Auto I did it! Thank you for the tutorial! I was a bit nervous because *I thought* the door was broken. After going through the steps, I realized that the drawstring was unattached, and the pins were not installed properly. Thanks again.
Do you happen to know what the 2 motors were for (in white) after you removed the glove box? Im pretty sure i hafta replace one of them but not 100% sure which one is which. Thanks
@@SaucySenorita sorry just saw this… honestly idk I only pulled out 1 side completely other is still in there n that’s how glove compartment is still working
@@SaucySenorita You just need to get it started back in the hole with the tab facing down, then rotate it so the tab faces forward again. It'll slide right into place.
This is Not a simple task . These white pins are very hard to remove . Then the door to the filter , of course it’s all plastic, good luck . Another task, try and find inside fuse panel, more needless plastic in place . Tore it out and threw it away , the designers of Ford Explorer had N O intention of anybody needing to get to either of these tasks !!!!
@@PYR-Auto the filter change went well. Unfortunately, the stench is still there☹️. Going to try spraying Armour all vent and duct spray. Fingers crossed, their is not a dead chipmunk in the ac system.
Thanks buddy, I am trying to find a bad smell when I turn my heat on bring air from out side smells like a mouse nest but I can't find it yet when I turn my heat to only use the air in the cabin you know the recirculate button I don't get any bad smell? What do you think I will check my cabin filter! Thanks !😇🇺🇸🤠🚨
I don't remember but I would have just used whatever was in stock at my local auto parts store. On my personal vehicles I do try to get a charcoal or carbon activated filter though - regardless of the brand - as they do a better job of removing odors.
WHAT! WHAT! Great video but damn Ford . You couldn’t have done better. I can’t go through all that! And how much will it cost for the dealer to replace my filter? Out of the 9 cars I’ve ever bought I had no problem on finding and replacing the filters. I knew we had a problem when I couldn’t find it on my own. 😩😩😩😩😩😩
I'm not sure what the brand was and usually I don't pay too much attention to the actual brand of filter but on my personal vehicles I do spend the little bit of extra money to get a charcoal or carbon activated cabin filter - of whatever brand one of my local auto part stores has in stock.
Thanks for the video. Literally cracked one of the eyelets that those stupid white clips are supposed to go through. Took 20 minutes to get the other one at least vaguely correct. The whole rest of the tutorial was great. Wish Ford had just made all 5 of the bottom things hooks, instead of eyelets on the left and right.
Way more challenging than it looks, all because of the white slide pin located under the dash. Here's some advice: some new cabin filters come with a tool to disengage the slide pin--keep that in your glove compartment as a reminder of how difficult this job is. That pin is hard to find, and will not come out using your fingers (hence the tool, or a flat-head screwdriver). Everything else is easy-peesy, up until you have to deal with that slide pin again, which is nearly impossible to get back into the correct spot for insertion. Combine this job with the same job for the Fusion, and FORD gets two thumbs down for pandering to their dealerships for making what should be an easy maintenance job cost over $150.
Everything in the video is informative, HOWEVER the first step indicates to move the white clips in towards the center and it was difficult for me. Next when you remove the retractable clip on the side you will never be able to retrieve it unless you remove the dash side panel. I had a difficult time lining up the white tabs described in step 1 to remount the door. Needless to say I broke one of them and needed to order another one. Unless you drive in dusty conditions don't bother changing this filter. I have 60,000 miles on my 2017 Explorer driving interstate highways and around town and the old filter was still in decent shape. Now, I'm not even thinking of changing my 2016 F150 with 30,000 miles.
There is a lot to break in there for sure. Several videos attack it from different angles. Some admit to breaking stuff. I wondered about retrieving that cable and thought maybe of tying a pull string to it. I have not done mine and will probably let dealer due it do to my age. In reading there notes it is away they can avoid warranty claims on electronics.
For those that say this is bad design, my Ford Focus and Escape are worse. Also, my Ram 2500 did not even come with one! You have to cut an opening for filter to into!
The clip that he doesn’t show is the impossible one. Mine was turned in such a way that it couldn’t slide out. It was against a stop. Ended up taking a screwdriver and hammer to it and breaking it. If I didn’t know better, I would say that Ford intentionally designs things to be difficult. I have changed hundreds of cabin filters. It should be a 3 minute job with no tools.
@@PYR-Auto it makes sense that it would suck air in from the cabin below and then circulate through the rest of the system. If this is correct and then the arrow should be pointing up.
I had the same question, as I replaced mine (2017 Explorer Sport) that had the arrow pointing up. I installed the new filter with the arrow pointing down. Logically, it doesn’t make sense for the arrow to be pointing up. If there is a possibility for debris to enter the housing, by design you’d want it falling onto and getting stuck in the filter, not falling back into the housing/blower motor. Also, the warning on the filter cover implies that debris would be coming from the top and could potentially fall down into the blower housing. I’m curious, is your Explorer a 2017? These appear to be the only MY with the filters going the opposite direction (per my RUclips/Google research).

Awesome. The bottom slide pins will fall out. This is in the top five worst designs for replacement. It is a must do
Putting the white pin back is the hardest part. Maybe that’s the reason why it was not shown it this video.
the ones in the video came actually out harder than they went back in - but yes these pins can be a real pain to deal with.
Pin is the hardest part
Those were a pain for me, getting them out and back in, and then one of the plastic tabs on the air cabin door snapped off too 🤦🏻♂️ even if I buy a new one, it’s still way cheaper than paying for the labor I guess

If you remove the white pins, won't the door still function properly since it hinges on and the two top clips keep it in place and the damping cord?
it may for awhile but eventually the bottom would work itself out of place since the pins hold the bottom in place
Are there vehicles that really have no cabin air filters? Because i can't find one in mine. I've looked.
Yeah - before about the mid 2000's model years many vehicles did not have a cabin filter. Pretty much all newer cars have them though

Video is wrong. Air flow is sucking in from bottom so arrow needs to point up.
I might be wrong 😛 2 other videos show it pointing down as well. Hmmm
The airflow is definitely supposed to go down. It's not really going to matter if you installed it wrong, the filter will just wear out faster.
