DIY Dog Elevator for my disabled dog (video oriented correctly)

  • This is an elevator to get my 160 lb Pyrenees dog, Moses, up and down the steps for the next few weeks after he tore his ACL.
    I needed it to go flush with the sidewalk at the bottom and flush with the deck at the top so that created a little bit of a unique design challenge. The "dogleg L" shape of the elevator accomplishes those goals so he doesn't have to step or jump to get in and out.
    I designed and built it in just a few days so its not a refined design. I just wanted to get something together to save his good leg and my back. If he needs help after a few weeks I'll redesign it to be much more compact and quieter.
    It has worked great so far and I'm very happy that he can come up to the house anytime he wants.

    The decibels coming off That wench is causing hearing loss. I learned the hard way. Go on google get a set of ear. Muffs. Lucky no room to get them off. But will protect her ears.
    Then put them on hand off when in the lovely wench goes. Your dogs ears are close to the source of the noise. You can look up the decibels. But after a little the loss will be significant . If you took her to vet or specialist they say age. I caught reason to late. Figured it out when immediate deterioration after noticing something over two years. But if she uses this often, it will be more obvious sooner.
    Mine was the dogs gathered at the front door barking like crazy dog walker there. But worse if anybody knocked. My one golden has this seriously piercing bark when excited. Poor Hamish standing right by here. My third golden by the door going nuts so the other two held back. Poor dogs stuck in house with me after bad knee replacement. So seriously excited for their walks. You can google it and surprise right there. I thought Vacume or lawnmower. They are both over the decibel limit. But Maicie bark her excited one. Seriously bad.
    Great job on the lift. My bad barking dog just had her leg amputated. So trying to find her something to get upstairs

    This is incredible!!! I have a 14 yrs old black lab who's got bad hips and not great eyesight anymore and he is not thrilled about stairs. And at 115lbs he's not easy to carry up and down the stairs! This would be the perfect solution for this situation! We are looking at buying a house and if we had something like this, all our house hunting would be so much easier! Brilliant!

      Thanks Amy Tegethoff. I thought this was going to be a short term piece of equipment but Moses is still kicking and he still rides the Mosievator several times a week. I make him ride it whenever he seems to be limping more than usual.
      It's hard to see them get old. I'm glad I was able to do something to keep his mobility up longer. I hope you find a way to help your dog get up and down. I wish I could help.

      It's the hardest thing to watch them get older and struggle. I'm not sure how much more time I have with my funny chunky Labrador, Zeus, but I get such a kick out of him every day. He's just the best. I also have a Great Pyrenees mix, who when shaved, looks a lot like Moses! He's about 6 yrs old and still in really good shape so I'm hopeful we don't have any acl issues or hip stuff any time soon, but we will see. Right now our solution is to carry Zeus up and down the stairs when needed, and by we, I mean my burly husband... because I cannot deadlift a 115 lb squirming pile of dog and he can. It's working for now : /
      I did show my husband your invention and he said he could replicate it if needed, so that's awesome. Thanks for the inspiration!

      If your husband makes one tell him to let me know if he wants any details about the Mosivator design. I'll be glad to help anyway I can.

    You're an awesome doggy daddy. Thank you for the vid. Are there wheels on the cart or does it just slide on the wood?

    really good idea, since most of these dog-elevators don't make the lowest 2-3steps.... I would've installed it on the outside of the stair-railing and taken out a small portion of the railing, to not loose that much with of the stair itself....

    Hi Tony! This is brilliant! Moses clearly has the best friend ever.
    My dog, Tito- Anatolian Shepherd 105 lbs, 8.5 years old, will be having surgery on his right knee (TPLO) on Sept. 12, 2018, and then his left 8-10 months on his left, after his right recovery. I am going to build this for him in our live/work building. We climb 18 stairs every day to get to our apartment on the top. We also have a back deck (could build an outdoor elevator) but I like him being inside as we live in CO and winter is right around the corner! I'm drawing out our plans now so we can start building asap ad get him accustomed to riding before his surgery. If you have any additional pictures/plans, can you send them my way!?
    Thank you SO much!

      Monica... I didn't make plans because I really didn't think he would be around for very long after that injury. Turns out that we used the Mosivator every day for just a little over a year before I lost my best buddy after his other ACL ruptured. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask and I'll do my best to help you out with whatever I remember.
      I wonder if our ancestors were related to one another?

    Tony; That is a great design, simple and effective. God bless you for being such an inspiring dog owner. One question: I especially liked the safety ratcheting system with the 2X2s that prevent fall - that is really clever, but I don't see how they will work when descending, don't they stop the car? Thanks for a great video!!

    This is close to the idea i came up with. I have front and back stairs, the front stairs are wider so it'd be easier to walk beside it. The back stairs I'd have to make it so you could walk through the lift while it's parked at the bottom, but it would be nice to have the back yard more available for the dogs, and maybe it looks better not on the front of the house. Time to build it!

    This is freaking noisy... but is a nice option! I’ll consider it for my girl. Thanks for the idea

    • @T70781
      @T70781  6 лет назад +3

      afosatti It really is noisy. I only had 2 days to design and build it so I went with the first thing that came to mind. I spent an extra day trying to isolate the winch vibration from the mount which helped (it was even louder before) but not enough.
      This is a cheap Harbor Freight 12VDC winch which is why its so noisy. I built another project using one of their 110VAC winches and it's not as noisy.
      Using a belt drive garage door opener to drive it might be a much quieter option if you can run AC power to it.

      I have to think about how to build It, because my stairs aren’t straight...

    • @T70781
      @T70781  6 лет назад

      afosatti in that case, making an elevator where it pulls the carriage straight up might be easier. Look at my attic hoist video. That may give you more ideas.

    Hi Tony,
    This is amazing! I just found out my older won’t be able to go up our stairs anymore and I’ve been desperately searching how to make some kind of ramp to get her up to the second floor. Any chance you would be willing to share how you built this? Thank you so much in advance!

      Shannon Hoy I’ve had the same news. Tony, any chance of some basic blueprints?

    • @shophacks
      @shophacks 3 года назад +1

      Sorry but I just winged it when I built it so no plans. The track is just 3@2×4's in a C shape on each side. I used 3@1/2" steel rods and 6 castor wheels on the carriage that roll inside the C channels.
      I hope that helps. Moses has been gone several years now. If I ever have to make another one I'll draw up plans for it.
