  • How to fix the top 5 head construction drawing mistakes: www.thedrawingcodex.com/fixyo...
It's easy to get discouraged with structural drawing and learning the fundamentals. In the beginning these concepts seem very technical.. but it's critical to understand that you get better as you practice and that they unlock a lot of creative potential.
The more you practice in a technical manner the less technical you need to be in your day to day drawing.
I recommend a small but steady percentage of your time as an artist be spent studying the craft.... 15-20% in the beginning. Fold these techniques into your normal everyday drawing bit by bit. And keep the focus always on drawing fun stuff you enjoy.
In this session I go over some tips and techniques for drawing heads. Covering the basics of how to apply the Loomis Method to fun fantasy characters. It's a laid back demo session. Unedited and fully narrated.
This is how I use these concepts every day as a working artist.
    Happy Drawing!

Very interesting stuff precisely because of what you say, you're not drawing from a reference picture but creating your own characters. And this style is what matches my own best from what I've found on YT so far.
Only minor point of critique, I wish I could play this tutorial playlist backwards, in order to watch from oldest to newest videos.😅

Hey, I just wanted to say I found this method and the way you explained it very entertaining while educational! The only criticism I have to say is that it was occasionally difficult to actually see what you were drawing, at least with the light lines you used on the sketch phase. Still a pleasure to watch, thanks!

Codex.. idealize, I like that, going to make that word a part of my art vision.. like the way you deviated from the Loomis method structure and used it to create new fantasy characters.. thanks..

Tim, would you mind sharing some advice on how to improve composition and layout? I really feel like this is what is holding me back from taking my art to the next level, yet despite alot of research and practice I just don't feel like I'm improving and it's very frustrating. In particular I have a hard time preventing the subject (characters or monsters) from being lost in the background, especially if the environment is busy or involves alot of detail, such as a forest, or bricks.
I've been trying your technique of drawing multiple thumbnails of the picture over and over - trying different angles and poses....but once I finally settle on something I think looks good and then finish the illustration I end up being unhappy with the final results. I think perhaps there is something more visually appealing about the simplicity of the thumbnail, but once I add detail the characters don't stand out from their environment as well.

Yeah I can make some videos about that for sure!
Certainly translating the thumbnail into a finished image is a giant challenge. It takes a long time to learn to balance the transition from the simple sketchy version to the fleshed out fully detailed version. There’s also a lot of other concepts there that might be helpful which I can cover. There’s the idea of macro and micro composition. How you manage those details - how to think about the hierarchy of detail and how to prioritise your 123 read within the composition. A lot of what it comes down to is learning how the frequency of detail you create in the line work will match up with the finished image… how much detail do you need, and how do you draw and control the viewers eye.
This is definitely a complicated one though! So I’ll be sure to create a bunch of stuff in the future to talk through these issues. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It’s really useful for me to know where you’re at.

im in you're opinion too that the loomis methode is merely designed to sketch from the imagination not the reference. It works though but there are many better and quicker ways to draw from the still life or reference than loomis methode.

so I've never study art or anything but I've seen plenty of other peoples art work to be inspired to start drawing myself, would the rest of your lessons help ? or are these for people that already have a foothold in art/sketching/drawing?
