I had an iconic love story that I used to joke was the stuff they made romantic movies with, starring Julia Robert’s and Richard Gere. Although I joked about it, basically it was true at the base, just not showing the difficulties that any marriage faces daily. My husband was 45 and I was 29 when we met. He’d had two marriages of long standing and his fourth marriage he married twice. That made me 4th wife, 5th marriage. I should have been terrified because of all the potential for disaster but my inner gut feeling told me he was “the one” and I should stay strong. My gut was right. Alex claimed he knew he’d marry me from the time he first saw me waiting at a table in the bar. My study partner from law school introduced us as she’d known him during his second marriage. We spent time on our own and when he walked me to my car, I was definitely interested in a second date. Then he kissed me goodbye and he truly knocked my socks off. We had a second date a few days later and I only knew that this was the man I was looking for. Honestly? I was scared to death that he’d turn out to be like past failures and I’d be hurt. We moved in together fairly quickly and began building a life together. I’ll be totally honest and say that over the next four decades (almost) we faced some considerable problems that could have been life changers. But his reaction (and mine) was that you faced a problem head on and looked for the best solution. We didn’t waste time on things that weren’t a definite issue in our lives. With this attitude and a genuine love and belief in the commitment we had made, our life rolled. It’s hard to put into words the depth and strength our love was to us. Perhaps it was a belief in our vows which didn’t have room for divorce. I only knew that if I left Alex, I would never have a happy day for the rest of my life. So time rolled on for us. In 2000 we were blessed with a move to the gorgeous Pacific Northwest where trees and flowers bloomed and the gentle rain made everything beautiful. Time seemed to move slowly as we enjoyed the Oregon coast and the serenity it possessed. Before we knew it 2021 was here and Alex was 83. He had a diagnosis of pneumonia and was in the hospital for a few days. Then a doctor revealed that he was in the end stages of Parkinson’s Disease. He came home on hospice and I tried to prepare myself for something I’d known for years - because he was older it was likely he’d go first. I had my beloved for 6 days. As difficult this was, I knew that our love story wasn’t ending; it was just a different stage. Alex’s last words to me were: “Do you have any idea how much I love you?” And then the end, or at least the end to this phase. Yes I knew how much he’d loved me and I him. We had mated for life like two alpha wolves that we loved so much. So now I wait for the day when we’ll be reunited, knowing that with a true and meaningful love there is never an ending, just an interval between the times of togetherness. I think that one of the best things about a love like mine is being able to share with others and encourage them that this isn’t just a romantic fling but a genuine love relationship that anyone can have if they’re willing to work at it and give it your all.
