Little Nightmares
is a puzzle-platformer adventure game developed by Tarsier Studios and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment in April 2017 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. A Nintendo Switch version followed in May 2018, and a Google Stadia version in June 2020. The sequel, Little Nightmares II, was released in February 2021.
In the game, players control a girl named Six, who is dressed in a yellow raincoat and attempts to escape from a nightmarish underwater station called the Maw. Upon release, the game received mostly positive reviews, particularly for its atmosphere, graphics, sound, and storytelling. However, the checkpoint system, long loading times, and the game's short length were criticized.
Main Plot:
The protagonist, Six, is a small girl trapped in the Maw. Upon waking in a lower section of the Maw, she tries to escape. Her small size makes ordinary objects like chairs and doors seem large and heavy. Additionally, she is periodically overcome by insatiable hunger.
During her ascent, Six encounters the Janitor, a monstrous humanoid with unnaturally long arms, who captures escaping children and sends them to the Kitchen via a hook conveyor system. Although the Janitor is blind, he has extremely keen hearing. After being lured and captured by him, Six eventually escapes and severs his arms with a steel trapdoor. She follows a conveyor upwards and reaches the Kitchen, managed by grotesque twin chefs. They are preparing a feast and constantly try to capture Six whenever she enters their sight. After escaping the Kitchen, Six discovers that the Maw drifts like a ship on a vast ocean.
Six then sees a passenger ship docking, bringing in large, obese guests who are led to the Maw's grand dining room filled with abundant food. These guests are watched over by a slender lady in a Geisha outfit, the Mistress of the Maw. After narrowly traversing the dining room, Six experiences extreme hunger again. When a gnome, a permanent resident of the Maw, offers her a sausage, Six instead chooses to eat the gnome, signifying her growing corruption.
Continuing her journey upwards, Six reaches the Lady's quarters, adorned with mannequins, porcelain dolls, and broken mirrors. The Lady soon pursues Six, revealing her magical powers. Six finds the only intact mirror and uses it to reflect the Lady's demonic gaze back at her. After defeating the Lady, Six consumes her and gains her supernatural abilities.
Armed with these new powers, Six enters the dining hall, where she is surrounded by strange, black particles. When the guests notice her, they try to eat her but collapse and die as Six walks through the hall, draining their souls. She reaches a large door marked with an eye that leads to the outside world. As she ascends the exit staircase, several gnomes approach the door.
After the credits, the player sees Six sitting at the entrance of the Maw, presumably waiting for rescue, while the foghorn of another incoming passenger ship is heard in the background.
