For those who want to do it properly. 'Tape out' from the amp to 'EQ in'. 'EQ out' to 'tape play' in the amp. Then press the 'tape monitor' button on the front of your amp. You need 2 pairs of cables for this. The way he shows on this video is incorrect, because the frequencies change with the volume. Done correctly through the tape loop as stated, the frequency settings remain the same when you change the volume, so your EQ settings remain stable at whatever volume you want to listen to. If you don't have a tape loop, then obviously you need to do pre amp out to EQ in then EQ out to power amp in, but you will be constantly changing your EQ settings depending on the volume.
Sir, you are a gentle man and a scholar, I thank you. I decided to pull out and restore my dad's pioneer system and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to hook up the eq
This is incorrect, you don’t connect the EQ to the preamp’s output. The way he’s doing it your EQ levels go up and down with the preamp’s volume whereas the EQ is supposed to always show and process the line-level signal regardless of your output volume. The right way to do it is looping the EQ through the tape rec/play connections like is explained in that very equalizer’s user manual.
Glad I saw this message before rigging myn up. I'll use the 'recorder 2' (md/tape). But then how will I play cd and get the equaliser output? I've only 2 left and right in and out ports on the equaliser..?
Can you please explain this a little more? Does this work without a tape player? I guess you set the monitor on the preamp to the tape record out? Is that correct?
@@sandlmv8301 if you have a loop back system, you use is as a insert. If you have a normal audio output (with cable adapters) you use it between whatever source and whatever monitors

that's with a pre amp and amp with just a integrated amp or receiver you just run the eq threw tape 2 which acts as a monitor so anything that you chose to play plays threw eq tape 2 is actually a monitor so say if you playing cds hit your cd line then hit tape2 monitor and CD/radio/phono/ will all run off eq
I'm having trouble with my set up if you reply I'll post a video so you can get an idea of what I'm talking about but basically my eq isn't showing movement
This shows the correct way to connect assuming you have a seperate pre-amp and power-amp as this guy does, it basically uses a line in/out signal and allows equaliser adjustments before the signal is amplified, For those trying to connect an equaliser to an integrated amp (like the majority of separate amplifiers are) then you will need to use the tape inputs/outputs.
now it will work with out a tape monitor? Have a Onkyo Tx-Ds676 and trying to install a BSR 4000xr so I can customize THE SOUND!! Don't have power amp for line in though???
awesome setup by the way the 504 is very nice and thats coming from a die hard audiophile who likes Yamaha only and pioneer 2nd if you don't count my number 1 pioneer sx1980 that's a beast !!! and the sx1980 out a hurting in marantz in 1979 !
Use the tape loop. Not the pre out. Pre-out is to go to a separate power amp. The tape loop "noise floor" is much lower than the pre. Then use the tape monitor to initiate the equalized signal to the speakers. Then play with the sliders until you realize its better without an eq.
Glad to find another Onkyo Integra enthusiast. We have similar setup, i got the TA2600 tapedeck, CP1055-FII phono, P304 preamp and a M508 power amp, oh and the CD DX5500. I am hunting for an EQ540, righ now i got a Yamaha EQ1100, but ofcourse it needs to be switched to integra for homogenity. :D
just like me! I want the P308 but they want tooooooooooooo much $$ for it and it looks to have pretty much the same specs as the p304. I have the dx-7500 CD player and all have the rosewood side panels. It really is a great system!

the question I have is. are you using an optical cable into the receiver? because that changes Everything. I have a digital signal in. but the equalizer is an analog one. not sure how to get around this.
It doesn't matter if you're using digital in, the audio is still going to come out of the tape 2 connection, connect your EQ to the tape 2 connection, press "tape 2 monitor" that's all you need.

Interesting eq is Marantz 551 with mic and pink noise for equalize or deequalize room....after listening about half a hour... when i switched him off difference is big....all rooms equalize some negativ freq....
The way he did it is incorrect, you don't equalize the output from your preamp to your amplifier because you'll be equalizing a signar with variable output (it is affected by your volume knob). You must always equalize line level signals and for that you hook the equalizer to your tape play/rec connectors just like he shows in the beginning of the video in the booklet. Funny thing is that he has the booklet showing how to do it but he still does it incorrectly.

You seem like a nice guy, but your teaching methods could be better.....love the green by the way....looks great. I can understand the bird easier lol!!
I know it's a late reply. I'm assuming you mean a denon avr989. Unfortunately the only way you can do it is by doing it this way. CD PLAYER OUT TO EQ IN. THEN EQ OUT INTO THE 'CD PLAYER IN' ON THE AMP. This will only allow you to equalize the signal from the cd player, but that's all you wanted I guess. I looked at the back of this amp online and it does have 'pre out' but it doesn't have 'power amp in' unfortunately. The Denon already has equalizer processing onboard in the form of different surround effects like rock, pop, hall, movie etc ..these different effects are typically just pre saved Equalizer settings. You should be able to adjust these manually for 2 channel stereo mode for music as well. Hope this helps someone. Cheers.
For those who want to do it properly. 'Tape out' from the amp to 'EQ in'.
'EQ out' to 'tape play' in the amp.
