As with your XR12 walkthrough, another very good video. The "live" walkthrough of you working through the setup of each track - eq, gate, comp, fx - was really informative. It's a shame the source tracks were so awful (sorry). I learned a lot. Would be good to see this again but with some more moderate source material where the effect of the processing comes across better. As it was you did really well to get something usable out of those kick, snare and bass tracks! I'd also like to see a more detailed dive into setting up vocal channels - how to EQ for mic artifacts, how to get the comp right and how to choose and tune a reverb for different song styles. These are the challenges I have doing sound for live musical theatre. Glad I found your channel anyway, keep up the good work!

Try looking at the output of each track in the daw. As long as you are all set with ASIO and can see all 18 channels in the daw, your routing should allow to you map out your track outputs accordingly. Hope this helps. =)

Hi! I'm going to buy XR18. Mostly for audio recording of my synths, guitar and whatever else we'll have to record (or listen) together. Is this good in terms of noise/signal ratio? I'm not a rock star but just wanna be sure that this digital mixer isn't a dissapointment. Some people talks that XR18's pre-amps aren't really good (as in Midas)... Whom to believe? Because Behringer claims that these are the same pre-amps there.
P.S. it's interesting if they're can be replaced (upgraded). Behringer working with SMD parts usually...

    • @Code_mov
      @Code_mov  4 года назад +3

Yeah. So honestly, I find these preamps ever bit as good as the Midas ones. They are very quiet, and have an excellent gain structure to them. Drive them a little and they warm up very well.

@@Code_mov Sorry for bothering again! Did you've used XR18 as a multitrack USB sound interface (not virtual). At least four sources... put into XR's inputs and mixing it live in a DAW. That type of a setup. I'm worrying about some negative reviews (but these were written 1-2 years ago) where people told that XR18 works bad with PC as a USB sound interface. And that the best thing it can do is to record the whole mix. The main complaints were about "pops" or "glitches" that usually comes if an audio buffer is "lagging" (probably you know about this things in general). I have a medium-speed PC for nowtime (Ryzen 1800+ with 16Gb RAM) and it doesn't have slowdowns in the most of cases with 10-20 hungry VST plugins.
So... My main fears here are about Behringer's XR dedicated ASIO driver. As I've got - it will not be working in this mode using some other ASIO drivers.

@@KiR_3d I'm looking at maybe buying an XR18 too. Everything I've read so far suggests it'll record 16 channels live into a PC no problem. Doesn't even need to be a particularly high spec PC as the XR does all the heavy lifting.
The only real problem I've read about with it is the in-built wifi is weak and it needs an external router for reliable use in a gigging situation.

    • @KiR_3d

@@user-qf4zs6qj4c On my PC (Asus X370, Ryzen 1800X) it gives audio dropouts by USB 2.0 ports. 3.0 ports works better but can freeze programs (it's some kind of a hardware-to-hardware issue probably). It can be "fixed" only by XR18 rebooting (on/off). But not every time. It's a strange issue, I've addressed it to Asus support... But, hell - they're slooooow... And the "best" answer was to ask to Behringer's support. With my detailed report and all mentions that it works fine on some others PCs (like Acer Aspire - not mine), Hackintosh.
I'm on Win7... maybe it's better on higher OS, don't want to try it.

@@Code_mov These were the best tracks you could find at that site? I think the main thing learned here is to never visit that site.

This is a good drum kick eq? The mic has nothing to do with your bad arrangement

gain should average minus 18 on this mixer on all channels, on the meter.

great tips and great mix, I think the drums sounds are just woefully bad, the most positive thing could say is they sound exactly like when they've been murdered with compression, to death. I guarantee you the settings would make sense in the room, on the day, in the venue, that's a different story, but I'm not a fan of the source audio one bit, nothing bad to say about the playing, the kick and snare sound like cereal boxes.

Thanks! It’s hard to find a decently recorded multitrack online somewhere that people are willing to let go of.

... unfortunately it is often better practice to EQ things as they stand in the mix, not in isolation. at 43:00 when you start playing the entire track together, it all sounds sterile. if that's what you're going for, fine, but more often than not you can use those overtones to supplement the song rather than taking them away. certain things will blend in and add to it, in general you shouldn't have to remove so much.
your final "that should be an ok sound" at 47:50 didn't sound very good at all - the vocals don't float, the guitar and bass sound thin, and the drums are snappy at the cost of everything else. i'm not trying to be offensive, but this is about the complete opposite of "mixing" - ie, you're taking all these things that sound ok on their own but not necessarily together. try doing this again from scratch without muting anything and see where it takes you - you may be surprised, you'll be able to remove what really needs to go without sacrificing the depth and character of the sound.

Yeah I did this video to showcase the features and tools on the XR18, I was monitoring it all with a set of $3 headphones, so yeah, it was just fine for the purpose of the video. This was nowhere near a mixing tutorial, plus those multi tracks were garbage.

You dont really need a sound check for that "music", just plug them in and go for a coffee, things cannot get worst than that,.

In this video, NO, you do not go through a "virtual sound check." You go through an intermediate to an advanced jumble of EQ and Compression of instruments playing "soft" metal recorded music. This video has nothing to do with a soundcheck! You are ALL over the place which makes your video quite confusing.

You have to use USB Channel as input instead of analog.
