I hope you all enjoy my latest Three Stooges goofs video. The last two were over the Curly - ruclips.net/video/ExQD7xjO0qY/видео.html and Shemp - ruclips.net/video/EBXwvrs9bu4/видео.html time periods. This time it's Joe Besser's turn.

One bit of Joe Besser trivia you didn't include: after his appearances as a Stooge, he was a regular on "The Joey Bishop Show" (the sitcom, not the talk show of the same title that came a few years later).

I remember when Joe Besser passed away in 1988 (age 80). He got a lengthy obituary! If it hadn't been for his stint as a Stooge the death notice would have simply read: Joe Besser. Best remembered for his work with Abbot & Costello and Joey Bishop". That would have been it!
Most Stooge fan do not consider this their best period. (Svenghoulie even apologizes whenever he runs a Besser short.) But after Larry and Moe died in 1975 (and Curly-Joe unable to get around) Besser became the official spokesman for the team When the Stooges finally received their Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Joe Besser was there to represent them!

I think a lot of Stooge fans may not have seen his other work possibly like the Abbott and Costello show where he's hilarious. Curly is the funniest no doubt about it, but I think all the Stooges were great and there's something good to say about every phase they went through from Curly all the way through to Curly Joe.

Joe, taken on his own merits, is a very funny guy. The major flaws of those shorts with him were bad writing and Moe & Larry getting a bit older (not much can be done about that, no matter who the third stooge was.) Thanks for this. I very much enjoy your blooper films.

Joe Besser was a guest on the Doug Herth radio program in Pittsburgh around 1982. Callers would call in to ask him questions, but his hearing had gone bad by then and he could barely hear the questions. He also kept trying to steer the conversation to other work he had done aside from the 3 Stooges. I don't blame him, as he shouldn't be judged by two years out of a long career.

Yes, it should be noted that the two Joes (Besser and DeRita) as well as Shemp spent many years performing outside of the Three Stooges. However, Besser is the only one whose career continued after his time as a Stooge. Of course, that's because his time as a Stooge wasn't ended by illness or death.

As someone who has watched & Loved the Three Stooges, I can say say while unpopular I will say Joe could have worked in the act a lot better if they made Larry the 3rd stooge (think like Curly & Shemp) and Joe being the middle stooge, however I believe the issue with the shorts in this era was the writing for the newer shorts were getting pretty weak & the remakes didn’t really help with the writing ether since the Colombia shorts were also beginning to dip in budget (hence why there was so much stock footage in the remakes at this time along with the later shorts with Shemp).

I heard that when Curly was brought in to replace Shemp circa 1933 Ted Healy didn't think he looked funny enough to be one of his Stooges. Jerry Howard had thick wavy hair and a well-groomed mustache. It's only after he shaved his head that he was accepted as a Stooge in Ted Healy's act and named Curly. His earliest film appearances show him with the mustache.

im goign to guess based on what gets shown on tv (unless there's issues with copyrights, or fee's, or royalties, etc.) that besser stuff is not popular. you rarely see it. i mean even though shemp didn't do as many episodes as curly did you just about see them fairly evenly compared to joe when you take into consideration how many less shorts shemp did.

While I agree with most that Besser's shorts are inferior, I always felt that his "not so haaaaard" shtick COULD have worked for the Stooges, had the writing been better, and had Besser been more willing to embrace the physical comedy. You can't blame him for, at that point in his career, not being keen on getting slapped and eye-poked repeatedly. But that hurt the presentation for sure. The bigger problem was scripts that were increasingly childish, plot-driven, and just not funny.

Jerry Lewis, a Stooge? Would never work. Too tall. Moe would've had to aim his fingers too high. Besides, if you think Joe was too whiney, imagine Lewis as a Stooge.
Jerry: "STOP WITH THE HITTING AND THE POKING AND THE HURTING!"
Gleason? Poor Larry! Stuck between TWO ill-tempered loudmouths!

  • @TWS-pd5dc
    @TWS-pd5dc 8 месяцев назад +1

Besser gets unfairly slammed for his brief time with the Stooges. He was funny enough. His persona was of a whiny, man-child and it surely worked great on the first season of Abbott and Costello as Stinky. He later had a recurring role for 4 seasons on the Joey Bishop sitcom from 1961-65. He once said at an autograph show that fans were much more fond of him as Stinky than Joe. But by 1957, following Shemps untimely passing, the act had gotten a bit stale, let's face it.

I had an older sister that enjoyed the Three Stooges. At that time, they were on a Boston MA station WSBK 9-10:30 in the morning on a Sunday. If she went to bed early on a Saturday night, sometimes she would write a note that if the 1st short was a Curly wake her up! If the 1st short was a Shemp, I'd need to inform her. Sometimes she would wake up, sometimes stay in bed. If the 1st short was a Joe short all bets were off and I would let her sleep. But sometimes she would sleep through the 90 minutes and I would have to inform her what shorts aired. This is not a goof but there are some rumors that in the short Sappy Bull Fighters, (1:30-1:40) a young Mary Tyler Moore could possibly be one of the ballet dancers warming up in the background. Take a look again to see if you agree or not. Guns A Poppin is the Joe short that my favorite. Yes, it's a remake of Idiots Deluxe with Curly. It's Moe with Oh My Nerves. I must have 106 and 7/8 and telling the cat to be quiet and quit stomping around that always get me laughing with both shorts.

Nice presentation--though not every "goof" really is one, of course. A goof is done inadvertently. Those unmoving farm animals were consequences of a limited budget, and not carelessness. To place real animals in the same shot as the spaceship would have required 1) a matte image bringing live animals into a long shot similar to the one we see; or 2) a cut to a full-sized lower portion of the ship, with real animals standing nearby. But the animals have no pertinence to anything in the script, and so there was no chance that White would have spent that kind of money for what was just a quick insert. Harry Cohn would have killed him!

Curly>Shemp>Joe>Curly Joe. All were funny, but you can't really beat Curly as the third Stooge. Shemp came the closest, and being a founding member who helped invent the act in the first place it's no wonder why. Joe was funny, he had his own unique schtick and it worked with the Stooges. But Curly Joe was just an inferior copy of Curly. You couldn't help but compare him to Curly because you could tell he was trying to emulate his style. And though funny at times, he didn't come close to the original. Michael Chiklis and Will Sasso did a better Curly imitation of Curly in the more recent films than Curly Joe did.
