Mulan is my favorite Disney princess. I wish they hadn't taken out Li Shang from the original Mulan, though. I couldn't agree with you more about the hair. Her cutting it off was one of the most powerful scenes in the original Mulan.

Yeah it was just okay. I mean, I didn't like the fact that she had powers or the fact that they used a phoenix. Like, why not use the dragon? Like, why didn't they include Mushu!

One minor historical flaw: Mulan's story is supposed to happen around 400-500 AD, isn't it a bit early for counterweight trebuchet to appear?

Something that I didn’t like about the original as well is the unhealthy binding. Binding and not removing it while sleeping is super dangerous. The fact that Mulan’s ribs don’t get crushed scared me

Love your fair review of the movie, unlike some other movie reviewers I've seen.
As for historical accuracy, the hair cutting scene would not have happened, because
1. Hair was treated as something precious during that time, and cutting it off is considered a form of punishment.
2. Warrior men actually wore their hair long, so it actually wouldn't make sense for Mulan to cut her hair off.
It's a powerful scene in the animated film, but not historically accurate. I do agree with you that her hair did look like a Pantene Shampoo hair commercial though. LOL

You do know the controversies surrounding this film? One the lead actress Lui supports police brutality against HK protesters, is a CCP sympathizer while also being a US citizen. Parts of the movie were filmed in Xinjiang where alot of reeducation camps are. In the ending credits Disney gave credit to some of China's Bureaus who continue to commit human rights violations. It's like thanking the them for letting them film in Auschwitz. People died and continue dying in Xinjiang in these reeducation camps, they get sterilized and forced to do hard labor as well.
