My caster kept boiling over. Did as the vid suggested, however was unable to loosen the screws. I suspect a laid off mechanic put them on. Now the caster sits open with the paste on top keeping all cool. Thank you. It works
Very short summary: At bout 4:36, you'll see that the thermal conductive paste is not well placed and leave some part of heating processor without conductive paste. At about 8:30, there is a suggestion to cut and to install an heatsync. By the way, thank you for the video. I have overheating problem here with mine.
Had problems with mine when they first came out. Screen would act up and turn green. Was under warranty but the process was complicated and they wanted me to use google wallet and I said no. I took the plastic cover off and the heat sink compound had shifted out of place like in your video. Google phoned back to arrange a replacement and I told them what I did to fix it. They were really pissed off and refused to cover it under warranty. Now I use it with no covers and it works great
Bill K Nice one 👍 is hardly worth the effort of returning it isn't it? Glad it was a similar fix, it really makes me wonder how many fail in this exact same way.
My first generation chromecast has the same thermal paste inside, and what looks to be some slippage as well. Theres a big slab heatsink already attached to the RF shield, but its definitely moddable, at least with some new/better thermal compound. Thanks for the video!
Bought a 3rd gen and put heatsinks on the side with the heatsink inside. I guess that will help too. Although 3rd gen is not overheating but i just used the heatsinks of my first gen chromecast which lasted 6 years. The heatsink is bigger than the cc3.
We actually do know it better than the international multi-million dollar companies, because that all comes down to reason vs greed. We say: What is 30 cents more in material for a better reliability. They think: Holy sh** count these 30cents*1 million units, we would loose a whole lot of profit. We have to build this crap as cheap as possible, every cent counts.
I put my house fan behind the TV and left it disassembled. That metal disk enclosed in that seems too heavy to be any good at dissipating heat tho I could be wrong..that lil heat sync was pretty much what I was thinking but directly on the chip
I noticed you did not put new thermal paste onto the other black chips. Would doing this help keep it from overheating or should I just leave them without any on?
@@backofficeshow I will try putting thermal paste on all the chips then and see how it goes. My gen 2 Chromecast doesn't reboot, but after a couple of hours on in the day it'll say reconnecting to internet every few minutes or so. Probably from overheating.
If this truly is the issue, than color me disappointed that crummy thermal past is causing my issues. How many people either gave up on chromecast or bought a new one when running into this problem?
Great video, congratulations. With your experience, do you know where, I can found a HDMI chromecast cable spare...? I would like to replace with a new one, because the kids broken... Maniy thanks. Cheers. Francesco.
Hey, nice work, just wondering if it has been functioning ok since the fix. I just got one off ebay that reboots about a minute into casting, and suspect it's overheating. I was going to do the same thing you did, and actually found your video by looking for a way to remove the lid.
+Jaroslav Sloboda No, but while I still have a borrowed flir I can try to mod another one. That being said it still works great. I suppose this should work on any small dongle device
Thanks for the help. I replaced the thermal compound on all places, and installed a heatsink like you suggested. I'm running a stresstest right now... As of writing this the test failed, it managed to play 10 minutes of a episode from netflix. :( I thought the problem could be overheating, but it's seems to be something else... Any thougts would be appriciated :)
Thanks for the answer! I think I solved it, and I'm a bit embarrassed about the cause. I was using wrong poweradapter, I found the original adapter and since I switched I've been able to stream about 50 minutes of netflix without crashes (and still going). Also, the thermal compound that was originally on the chromecast hadn't moved like your had. So my problem was probably just me using the wrong power adapter. But atleast it's modded now so hopefully I wont have to worry about overheating for longer :)
Tolgahan Çelik had not had a problem since i switched. Sorry but I dont know which of my chargers I used before.... but yeah it mustve had different specs...
+WeirdScience06 I think we have around 5 between us and two have had the issue, I guess that's a 20% failure rate 😂 to be fair they started out fine, so probably depending on their orientation the material might migrate or not 🤔
+Brian Jones Not sure, as long as it plays TV without stuttering through Rick and Morty I haven't paid them much heed. Though I have to say, lack of Amazon support is seeing me use the consoles more and more for this functionality instead
@@backofficeshow I am going to modify mine, since in the use with stadia it produces a lot of heat, I am going to also put fans on both sides and heatsink is on both chips. Thanks for the video has been very instructive.
I think there would be some transfer to the metal disc, so increasing the efficiency of that disc may be enough to keep it going. Thought to be fair, I am sure we will all be using v3 or v4 chromecasts by then :)
I'd bet that just drilling a series of small holes around the sides of the case would drastically increase cooling. Giving even a little of the heat a place to pass through besides radiating through the plastic would probably help a lot. But yeah, the migrating thermal goop probably causes a lot of people's troubles.
+Thor the small hole approach is a great idea. I can't believe they still have heat issues in a second Gen product. I think they are relying too much on thick paste to make up the gap in tolerance. A tighter can would have been better.
The Backoffice haha, great vid btw. i can't believe they'd design these so that the thermal paste just slides off! gonna rotate mine now to prevent any dripping!
ye gods you loon! never put new paste on top of old paste! clean the old stuff off first!!! oh and you with that knife! I've never tensed up so much watching a video! was expecting blood at any minute! still great vid though in the end.
@@backofficeshow Excellent thanks so much for this. I have this problem especially when I am in Morocco. If you haven't been I highly recommend it. 2 and half hour flight and restaurants and hotels are ridiculously cheap. Albeit I would certainly wait for the lockdown to be lifted.
In reality, you should have removed the flimsy disc which probably isn't doing much as a heatsink, seeing how it's paper thin and made your square hole over the raised bit where the putty was located and place your much nicer heat sink there. As its over the chip that likely needs it. I know it seems very unplanned and you were putting it back together and saying what the hay! But, that would have likely been the better way to heatsink the thing.
Yeah, I would imagine the heatsink still holds heat, but would likely move more heat away from the processor than the thin sheet of metal all the same. Like you say, removing the plastic would probably be sufficient to let it breathe.
Big company like Google developing crap solutions for cooling. It's a disgrace. I now have two units overheating. I didn't do all in this guide, I just taped two heatsinks on each side and now it *seems* stable. But who know it's obvious that the components run warm and reduce their lifetime. Wtf? Same crap with the nexus 5 from LG (Google indirectly) with bga solders that were crap. Most of the nexus 5 were doomed to destroy themselves after a while. Google are ripping us off with crap.

Pit a crystal under it that will absorb and remove some of the heat. Small ones are not exspensive.

Now the whole damn thing has its internals full of paste. Good work.
Doesn't matter, it's not electrically conductive enough in such small quantity. He will probably never open it again so nobody will ever know.

eBay or Amazon, look for HDMI extension
