Several of my friends are named Brenda after Brenda Lee!! I saw her on the Ken Burns documentary of Country Music. I just loved hearing her sing. There was a clip of her at 8 yrs old performing. Incidentally my husband always called me Lee as it is the shortened version of my name, and at one point I was set to name baby girl Brenda Lee, but she surfaced as a boy, so he became Brendon. He can't sing, but he can play guitar. I generally call him Brendo. I realised the Celtic /Indoeuropean significance Bren-dah, ie fire wheel, Druid symbol for the sun.
Brenda said that her aim was "to live in the song" as she sang it, expressing the emotion of the lyrics as she went. Her understanding of singing at a young age is very special and maybe unique.
I have had a crush on Brenda Lee since I was a very young lad in Texas. I kept the radion on all night and her song, SWEET NOTHINGS would wake me up with a smile! Thank you Maam Brenda, I love ya!

Having only known Rockin Around the Christmas Tree and I'm Sorry growing up, I've recently delved into her catalogue of songs and my God, I now understand why John Lennon called her the greatest voice in rock. He wasn't just being nice or kind, he was being real! I'm way more than impressed with Brenda Lee!
The Beatles opened for Brenda in Hamburg in 1962. Lennon heard Brenda live at the Star Club for about a week. Brenda was impressed by their songwriting. Not so much by their playing, by the way😉. Learning that they didn't have a record contract, she asked for a demo to bring back to America and her label, Decca records. The company didn't want to sign them.
I was 4yo when Brenda was rocking' London.She had a brilliant voice. It had range, OMG when she sung low, OMG when she rasped. And she knew how to entertain on stage. She was 14yo, OMG.
Brenda wrote that she never really felt stage fright. Young Nashville singers have related that she would advise them backstage to "go out there and get them". That's what you see in all her performances. No artificiality or pretentious acting, just nothing between her and the audience but the song.
The lady is a living legend of which few can boast. Loved her from the get go and wished like hell I'd been given that voice lol Brenda made her footprint in Pop Culture... not an easy feat ( no pun intended) :o)

Such an incredible entertainer. I've never gotten to see her in concert though I did meet her once at Fan Fair in 2000 and she made a picture with me (and called me "Darlin').
@@guypaul When traveling in the South, the first thing I noticed was being addressed as Honey or Sweetie or Darlin' by waitresses, cashiers. sales women etc. Brenda is very southern in person but tailored her performances to the audience. She even learned Japanese in order to give better performances on her visits there.

"Little miss dynamite"..Worlds number one female rock star of the 60s...Perfect in every way compared to those stale old lump of wood female "Brit" singers!. Brenda was before her time..Was a true rock & roller!
Brenda is not usually celebrated as being the first real female rocker. She, in fact, created a new market overlooked by the industry. In the wake of her success, record companies went out and signed dozens of girls. None of them were really like Brenda, but this important part that she played in Rock history is completely overlooked.

And don't forget Patsy Cline recorded "Stop Look and Listen" , pure rockabilly, a few months before Brenda cut her first record, and both in the same studio with the same backing band of course. Ditto Janis Martin, easily THE best 50s female rocker bar none, and the Collins Kids first record Beetlebug Bop was the year before Brenda's. I'm not here to knock Brenda, she was a great singer and performer, but I think you may be overcooking her importance, there were a lot of great female pop singers around before Brenda came along.

To repeat what I said, yes she could sing, and yes she had some big pop hots and a fine career as a country singer, but I'm afraid I stick by my guns, she was never that great a "rocker", and she was def NOT the first. IF she had been such a "rocker", why did she so quickly revert to sobby country pop ballads etc. As you say EVERY performer adds something to the mix, but the couple of times I saw Brenda sing live in the 80s, she was not that great at all, she didnt have the charisma or the sheer stage prescence of the likes of Janis or Lorrie Collins, and wasn't anything like such a nice, sweet, genuine, humble person to meet and chat with (no that she would chat). An odd thing that I noticed at the end: When all the sax players exit the bandstand to join Brenda at center stage, there suddenly emerges a slide trombonist from the LEFT of the stage. 4:40 What was that about? Somebody who just wanted to be on TV?
@@jaysilverheals4445 Ha! I had 2 explanations. The banal one being that he was a band member who was left out of Brenda's arrangement. The fanciful one being that it was a bar bet by a stage hand. At the pub the night before, he announced that he would be on TV the next day, so he snuck out on stage to get some free pints later that night.
@@MostlyBrenda Actually that was Don Lang, of "Frantic Five" fame on BBC's Six Five Special show etc. Don was a guest on this show during which he sang (and played his trombone on) his hit song Red Planet Rock. As was the norm on this and all variety shows in those days he joined the rest of the cast for the final number, but yes was a tad late.

"Little miss dynamite"..Worlds number one female rock star of the 60s...Perfect in every way compared to those stale old lump of wood female "Brit" singers!. Brenda was before her time..Was a true rock & roller!
Brenda is not usually celebrated as being the first real female rocker. She, in fact, created a new market overlooked by the industry. In the wake of her success, record companies went out and signed dozens of girls. None of them were really like Brenda, but this important part that she played in Rock history is completely overlooked.
@@MostlyBrenda "first female rocker" wow there's a claim, what about all those superb black RnB artists before her who would and should have been much bigger if not for the colour of their skin (and for the record I';m a white Brit with no axe to grind). And don't forget Patsy Cline recorded "Stop Look and Listen" , pure rockabilly, a few months before Brenda cut her first record, and both in the same studio with the same backing band of course. Ditto Janis Martin, easily THE best 50s female rocker bar none, and the Collins Kids first record Beetlebug Bop was the year before Brenda's. I'm not here to knock Brenda, she was a great singer and performer, but I think you may be overcooking her importance, there were a lot of great female pop singers around before Brenda came along.
@@RockinRedRover bull shit, every performer adds something to the mix;however, Brenda Lee added a whole recipe book. the singers mentioned were outstanding, but Brenda Lee came from another planet, & she had staying power. collins kids & janis martin are long forgotten, BTW/ I own most of their music too !!! John Lennon, & Jimmy Page held her in high regard as well as golden earring in radar love;ie, "radio plays some forgotten song, Brenda Lee's coming on strong"
@@bbb8997 Wow there's a nice choice of language, and there was me being my usual diplomatic polite self. Clearly wasted on you... To repeat what I said, yes she could sing, and yes she had some big pop hots and a fine career as a country singer, but I'm afraid I stick by my guns, she was never that great a "rocker", and she was def NOT the first. IF she had been such a "rocker", why did she so quickly revert to sobby country pop ballads etc. As you say EVERY performer adds something to the mix, but the couple of times I saw Brenda sing live in the 80s, she was not that great at all, she didnt have the charisma or the sheer stage prescence of the likes of Janis or Lorrie Collins, and wasn't anything like such a nice, sweet, genuine, humble person to meet and chat with (no that she would chat). And by the way, John Lennon absolutely loved Alma Cogan, both musically and physically ahem, but was she such a star, is she still that remembered aprt from a couple of corny Christmas hits ? - no she's not. Fwiw I think she recorded some greeat tracks in her early days, Lil Jonah being a good example, BUT these were helped enormously by being backed by the cream of Nashville studio musos. We all have our own views, I think I'm entitled to mine, I know for an absolute fact that you never, repeat never, ever, hear Brenda Lee's songs at any of the hundreds of 50s rock n roll gigs I've been to thro all my life since the 80s, both here in UK and abroad in Europe and the USA, wheras the singer's I've mentioned are massively popular to this day. To me this proves that I am right. However, I still respect your opinions, so please respect mine, and without your sad and wholly unnecessary use of foul language, I doubt your hero Brenda would approve of that.

She knew the blues, had a great vibrato, learned by others' mistakes, and took care of business better than Elvis himself.
Elvis and Brenda were closer than people know. Brenda has said that they talked regularly on the phone.

He did, but his wife Sarah couldn't stand all the hours he spent at bars and they divorced. From what I understand, he was left with just a fine tooth comb 😀. Sarah, by the way, lived to be 102!

@@jaysilverheals4445 Ha! I had 2 explanations. The banal one being that he was a band member who was left out of Brenda's arrangement. The fanciful one being that it was a bar bet by a stage hand. At the pub the night before, he announced that he would be on TV the next day, so he snuck out on stage to get some free pints later that night.
@@MostlyBrenda Actually that was Don Lang, of "Frantic Five" fame on BBC's Six Five Special show etc. Don was a guest on this show during which he sang (and played his trombone on) his hit song Red Planet Rock. As was the norm on this and all variety shows in those days he joined the rest of the cast for the final number, but yes was a tad late.
