So proud of Jerry, he survived & is proof you CAN overcome. Sadly, most didn't & don't. One of the best guitarist in the whole world & inspires so many!👍
Its hard to see Jerry like that. So glad he and Sean were able to win their battles with addiction. Fucking sucks that Layne and Mike couldn't win theirs... Rest In Peace
This was when he was writing /recording _Degradation Trip Vol 1 & 2_ . If you know the album, you'll know he sank to the bottom of the pit at that time and it shows on that album. The material was too dark even for Alice in Chains. I love that album and I love Jerry. That album for me shows that sometimes you need to reach the bottom before you can crawl back up.
The full 25 track deg trip is so so fuckin good. Dark and depressing and a lot of heaviness but also some dark softer songs, he was in a bad bad place forsure but it made for some great music, luckily he was able to save himself and is still around kicking ass today. Jerry is the man tho, one of the best songwriters ever.
Just listened to the whole thing this afternoon...between bouts of weeping! MAN, Jerry really was "down in a hole" and undoubtedly freaking out about Layne's death and the end of AIC. His lyrics are so heavy and brutal!
Get born again and died was originally written for this album but he decided to make them alice in chains songs and put them on the music bank in 1999.
So glad to know that Jerry would find his way and have a legacy that is not highlighted by a premature death from substance abuse. So sad that Staley & Starr got lost and paid the price. Jerry is one of the coolest people in rock & an amazing talent.
He suffered through alcoholism and why, he never threw Layne under the bus cause they were all going through their personal battles. Such a big difference from how he looked during the unplugged session in 96 😕 really happy to see him doing much better now though. Just seen him twice in concert with the band out in LA and Sacramento at the aftershock festival and they rocked out big time.
@@rsohlich1 completely agree. Friends in nursing...have heard plenty of horror stories of alcohol withdrawal. But Jerry was a full blown coke/crackhead too.

Sean was at the door with my brother, so my choices were open the door and go to rehab or jump out the back window down a cliff into some black berry bushes. That’s the choice I took. Luckily they caught me because I couldn’t go anywhere, I was kind of stuck in a bush at the bottom of a cliff bleeding, and I ended up here. It’s so great reading something like this know the man is still around kicking ass today. It’s so sad there isn’t a statement like this from Layne for us to read. Rip Layne. Anyway we’re truly lucky as fans that Jerry overcame his issues and now many years later is still kicking ass
Oh yeah, those were his cocaine and boozing days. He references it in the music he wrote for that album. Seeing him there makes me sooooo happy he's clean.
Wasn’t just drugs it was hard living in general, he wasn’t taking good care of himself, staying inside all day, not showering much doing Drugs etc. he was at a really rough point in his life for a few years there, it’s why degradation trip is just a dark record
Come on people. On July 1st 2013 Jerry celebrated 10 years of sobriety. Degradation Trip Volumes 1 & 2 is an amazing body of work. Stunning. Lets just enjoy the music and be thankful for what we have. Lets celebrate life for a change. Check out his speech for the MusiCares MAP (the 5.33 one).

Did jerry ever have a heroin problem? or just coke and alcohol. I'm sure he's tried it before. I thought i heard somewhere once that he was on h for a while, can't find it anywhere though.

Layne was pretty much in his condo all day at this point doing drugs and playing video games and shit. I’m sure Layne situation plus AIC basically dissolving did a lot of damage to Jerry, he was struggling bad with drugs and mental health while making degradation trip. Luckily he cleaned up and has been sober since 03 and is still making kickass music and happy and in good health.
