Q104.3 switching to classic rock was the worst day of my childhood. Thanks, Razz.

@@mets0513 Alot of stations changed formats in NYC in 1996. Q104 (changed to Classic), KRock (changed to Modern Rock), Z100 (transitioned back to top 40), KTU( changed to Dance), WNEW (changed to Classic). I agree it sucked, this is where we started to see the demise of a rock revolution that started just a few yrs prior.

Ahhh...happier days. Back when Layne was still with us, you could tell Jerry was happier....at least for the time being.

I f***ing hate how interviews ask for a "Status Report" on how Layne is doing. Jerry would say that Layne was "fine" and was "Composing as we speak." Jerry wrote a majority of songs for AIC - with the exception of the album "Dirt" where Layne wrote "Junkhead," "Sickman," "Hate To Feel," "Angry Chair," and "Godsmack." I honestly believe that a majority of Jerry's songs were an expression of how much Jerry cared for and supported Layne. Jerry protected Layne. "Black Gives Way To Blue," "Brother," and "Don't Follow" are prime examples as well as how Jerry supported Layne on in Unpligged's "Sludge Factory." Finally, I believe that Jerry and Layne were so close regarding being abandoned by their father (for Layne a biological father only seeking Layne to use together after his father seeing the success Facelift,) and for Jerry's dad leaving the family after his service in Vietnam, Another way Jerry protected Layne wa "Grind" the first two lyrics. This song was in the Tripod/Self-Titled album Rumors spread that Layne was dead (as Layne was ashamed of himself and isolated himself in his 5th floor condo. That - and rumors that the band "broke up" pissed Jerry off.

If you read Jerry's lyrics on any of his solo albums - and even the AIC stuff post-Layne - you can see his mental disintegration over everything that happened. With "Brighten" I think (I hope!) things have finally taken a turn for the better for him. He was an absolute mess after Layne died - Degradation Trip had him spewing a lot of stuff from down deep. Sean said the "Tripod" album was basically Jerry and Layne yelling at each other in their lyrics. I'm wondering if they left one another on bad terms (could be why Jerry wrote songs like "Atone" and others, trying to seek solace). In Mad Season, pretty sure Layne wrote "Above" about Jerry, so it sounds like toward the end, things weren't so great between them. Jerry's very driven, controlling and a perfectionist, Layne was just more "soft and squishy", so they may have gone from being BFFs to oil & water over the course of 2-3 albums. Even today, I think much of Jerry's lyrics are to and about Layne, as he tries to work things out in his head, the poor guy! 💔 🎸 💔

Well what you believed was wrong. Jerry and Layne were friends at first but grew apart. By the end they hated each other and merely tolerated each others presence for the sale of the band. Jerry was angey at layne for his addiction but wouldn’t voice it in the press for obvious reasons. also, jerry wrote godsmack sickman too, layne just wrote the lyric. layne also wrote head creeps lyric and music. he wrote all the melodies on the tripod album he sang on.

@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 It's true that Layne and Jerry drifted apart but they both still loved each other as best friends. Jerry probably felt guilty for not speaking more to Layne in his last years.

@@goudagirl6095 I agree, their relationship deteriorated at the end. Mike Starr was the only one who remained close to Layne.

I started thinking about what a great station they used to be in the 90's but that they played " Mother " by Danzig way too much and then a minute into this video, effin' Danzig is brought up...
