"oops, my anarchy symbol" will forever be my favorite video on the internet
I still quote it frequently 😂
(Also, love your Gwen PFP!)
@@ProfJamie20 same
I keep quoting it whenever I drop something
I will be saying that and "wouldn't you like to know weather boy" till I die.
I feel that public access shows like these would gain massive audiences of they were rebooted on RUclips
I've found that some of these shows are still going now on youtube and I hope maybe this video brings more attention to them
Isn't that just.....RUclips?
Let's Paint TV is presently active on RUclips.
raw time
@@GENXJOPLIN public access TV was all about love of the content - no monetization. On RUclips it's all about the money.
Pretty rich for Piers Morgan to call someone "incredibly irritating".
Bro needs to look in the mirror.
That's what we in the biz call ✨projecting✨
“Oops, my anarchy symbol!” is just a hard fucking line
its nice that public access is no longer needed because of the internet, but man, theres something so surreal about knowing these actually aired on television
I feel like the formats of some of these shows need to be brought back as well. People's idea of what good Internet "content" looks like is different from what "live TV" or a "TV series" should look like. Thus, amateurs make different videos when trying to go viral on RUclips as opposed to trying to get ratings on public access.
Don't follow the worldly trends follow Jesus Christ today
There is no security or hope with out Jesus Christ in this world come and repent of all sins today
Today is the day of salvation come to the loving savior Today repent and do not go to hell
Come to Jesus Christ today
Jesus Christ is only way to heaven
Repent and follow him today seek his heart Jesus Christ can fill the emptiness he can fill the void
Heaven and hell is real cone to the loving savior today
Today is the day of salvation tomorrow might be to late come to the loving savior today
John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Jesus
now they just fill the time slots with infomercials which most of them are scams
They should bring it back

Honestly John the “failing” guy is super inspirational to me as someone whose AVPD makes failing feel like something I should be put to death for. I really really appreciate his vibes and beliefs. Also like… he is creating art and entertaining people! That’s so cool. I really like John.
I feel the same way, I thought of him a lot while making this video tbh
I'm an artist who has a massive fear of failure due to past trauma and being a gifted kid and John made me feel so much more confident to get out of my art block soon and start trying and experimenting with new methods and styles again, its motivational and I aspire to be like him

A Chat with Glendora’s mere existence makes me feel a whole lot better for some reason. Will definitely check it out. She seems so sweet.
Same here, I found Glendora so late into making this video but I knew she needed to be included. What an inspiration she is ♥
Small correction: when GITCY aired on television it was actually called “flights of fantasy”. The guy who uploaded all of them decided to rename it “gaming in the Clinton years” for some reason
Yep I could’ve made that more clear

Seeing Alex Jones looking vaguely attractive was a huge shock to my system. Holy moly! It feels like a "How far the mighty has fallen" moment but Jones was always somewhat crazy.
This is the first time I'm hearing about this "Public Access TV" and - oh my god - how interesting this video was! My country never had anything even remotely similar to that and clearly we've been missing out! So many interesting, wholesome, inspiring, hilarious and horrific stories and characters. Wow, what a rabbithole!
Joey, you always release the most unique (in a best possible way) content about the most interesting things. Thank you so much for that! Much love ❤
so glad you enjoyed the vid! I feel a strong bond towards a lot of these folks on public access. It's such a direct predecessor to the OG days of RUclips I grew up on. I'm glad I could take a deep dive into their world and showcase the path they paved for us. 🙏
@@joeyengelman I agree. Man, what a peculiar thing!
@@joeyengelman Is public access TV any TV that isn't cable, paid, internet etc?
@@AbrahamLureI think it was originally made for Cable TV, IDK.
@@AbrahamLure I'm a bit late to this reply, but I noticed it didn't seem like anyone answered your question yet? Figured I may as well answer.
"Public Access" is basically what it says on the tin. It's not TV that anyone can access, it's TV made BY the general public.
I'm sure every state/city had it's own groups involved in setting up Public Access, and it's way more involved than a RUclips comment can summarize at 4am, but the basic idea was that someone could request/rent out a timeslot, show up for filming, film a show, and have it air on TV.
That's why some of these feel so unique, because it's just regular people (often with no prior background in television broadcasting) just showing up on air to try something out that they think people would be interested in. Obviously some of them were more successful than others.
Up there in the thread Joey compares it to early RUclips and it's not far off of a comparison. Think of it like how people could "broadcast themselves" before RUclips and you're on the right track. Nowadays, anyone can just film themselves, or record their computer screen and upload content to RUclips, but before mass adoption of the internet, this is what people did to get their ideas out to wider audiences.
I'm sure someone in the comments will be able to add way more clarity than I can, but I wanted to give at least a basic answer.
"Iceberg videos are dead", I say as I click on a 2 hour long iceberg video out of habit.
i'm gonna keep riding these icebergs until they melt

as an alternative (emo) person who has had lots of punk friends and seen lots of people with extravagant makeup (like corpse paint) and very edgy clothing, i wasn't put off by sister who's appearance at all :) they seem like such a lovely person!
They seem adorable!
Yeah they seem cool
Denver is so sweet! I hope he's well.
Same here! They seem very kind and understanding; I'd love to have a conversation with them.
magnificent video. far too often i see people write off any pbc tv as “weird” or “cursed/creepy”. i’m glad u see beyond that and look into the point that the creators were trying to make with their shows. amazing video.
thanks so much! really glad to hear my appreciation for a lot of these shows and people resonants in the video
@@joeyengelman np!! as a 2000s kid i sadly missed on our public access tv in its heyday, but the shows never fail to intrigue me!! it’s like youtube before the internet. thank you for your video again!
The Glendora lady is absolutely amazing. I'd never heard of her but I'm really glad I have now. SOmetimes it's just good to know there are people like that in the world. There are some really genuinely artistic shows in here. Even if some of them creep the fluff out of me like that mouth.
Glendora is the BEST 💛
She's so wholesome!
@@rosykindbunny1313 Oh man, she is NASTY too, though. She makes entire videos about how the volunteers who help her don't do a good enough job. She's also blind by choice - she could have her condition fixed, but she refuses due to religious beliefs. Everyone who helps her is out of the goodness of their heart, except for the one paid person she didn't scare off - and still, they get whole videos dedicated to how they didn't do all 75 things on her list.
She presents herself as this holy woman, but she's pretty greedy and entitled too.
@@FarOutJunk Dang, that sounds nasty
The stuff about ROX caught me completely off-guard. I went to college and to law school in Bloomington before moving there permanently. After hearing so much about New York Public Access, suddenly hearing the name "Bloomington" and seeing a bunch of locations that I used to walk past every day nearly broke my brain. I used to work at a legal clinic that operated in the Monroe County Courthouse every Friday.
ROX rocks!
Wilbur's travels to alaska is one of the most wholesome things i've ever seen.
for real!
i love wilbur :')
I can’t stop watching this. Every segment feels like a new discovery. Great job.
that's all i could hope for while putting this together 🕺
"Whoops my anarchy symbol." was not a sentence I expected to hear today.
EDIT: The fact that Cooking With Da Hook just has that drummer tucked away in the back just sent me over the edge. Five straight minutes of laughter. xD
I just want to say in my opinion, you're very underrated in the RUclips sphere. Your videos are so well researched, thorough, and most interestingly unique and engaging. I can't wait to see more of your content :)
thanks Tasfia that's really nice of you to say 💛
@@joeyengelman yes! huge fan of your stuff and im always pleasantly surprised when i see u in my subscription feed ! i hope u had a good day, this video helped make mine better 🙏
i swear, public Access TV walked so post ironic memes and the modern day internet could run
We need a “so bad its good” iceberg
I actually feel intrigued and hopeful how some of the people one day just decided "know what? I'm going to be a star. Doesn't matter how it'll happen, doesn't matter if I crash and burn, what does matter is that when I do this, I am going to do something that I love and show the world what I can do"
And yet it worked!
Wow. I know for a fact this video isn't going to be monetized and yet I know for a fact this wasn't your usual 'I just read an iceberg without understanding any of the context'. Its clear you watched these, researched and reached out to people involved. Since you dont have a patreon, please enjoy possibly enough money to buy a small Starbucks coffee.
wow thank you! so grateful to see responses like this and I really appreciate the donation 🙏
I'm surprised The Worst Show wasn't included on here since apparently it had an actual acid bomb tutorial that someone used for a bombing in real life, with the showrunners acting like they did absolutely nothing wrong.
Probably wasn't included because of the bomb tutorial, which is super not legal
i don't know if it's just me but there's so much passion and zero fcks given i can feel from some of these shows you don't get from the big leagues these days, so refreshing to see!
Wonderful video! My great-aunt had a public access show in Grand Rapids. Some of the clips are still on RUclips, and feature other members of my family who I never got to know very well. Thanks, Joey!
thanks for watching tasha! that's awesome, would love to check her show out if that's something you're comfortable with sharing
Hi! It's totally fine with me. Her RUclips is Corrine Carrey and she is the picture of the very, very old lady. She passed a few years ago at 93. :)@@joeyengelman

OH MY GOD
I went to high school with Emmitt, we had shop class together and we were all shocked that they let him around the power tools. Believe it or not he came a long way from where he was in high school, he was not connected to reality in any way. He walked the halls making space sounding noises and was right on the edge of special education, he was oblivious to all social customs. But he was a good hearted kid that never, ever wished bad on anyone. Wasn't capable of it.
A freshman in our class tried to mees with him and stole his 'sconce' while holding it and taunting him. I wrestled it out of his hands and handed it back to Emmitt and he just says, 'oh thanks big guy beep beep boop bop..' and just went on his merry way with a smile on his face as though nothing even happened. I still laugh about it.
Most of these while bizare are honestly quite wholesome. It's just people doing what they love to the best of their ability
"Good evenin'!" "Your mother." "Thank you..." 😂
Glendora just put a huge smile on my face, we need more people like her in the world
100% agree!
No worries, there are plenty.
I'm currently studying Media and I watched about three of your videos in one afternoon, that's how interesting you make them. I first heard of public access TV when I was a child and even then I thought the concept could make way for some eccentric or sketchy characters to fall through 😅 Love the videos many well wishes and Merry Christmas (or whichever holiday you celebrate) from Scotland! 🏴👏👍
that's so cool! hope all goes well with your studies and happy holidays to you too 🕺
I was expecting the Merrill Howard Kalin Show to be here. It was I believe a 3 part cooking show hosted by Kalin, a disabled man who would do his best to show his audience how to cook a complete meal, all while doing celebrity impressions and making his own commentary as he worked. Even if he didn't succeed either with his food or his comedy, Kalin was always upbeat and positive. He unfortunately passed away back in 2008 at 45, but his legacy lives on thanks to the internet. While he's something of a meme for his awkwardness and cooking skills (my boy seriously put down a head of lettuce where he was just had raw chicken sitting moments before) it's hard not to appreciate the effort and energy he put forth.
Also I'm glad that the "shooting yourself" in "The Church of Shooting Yourself" means shooting with a camera. What a great way to catch people's attention right off the bat.
You missed an interesting part of the Joy Junction story. In the chatrooms, he would refer to the children he preyed on as his "little piglets".
Also, IIRC, he was a pretty well liked guy around the community, and he would regularly have pizza parties for the church kids at his house. Photos were found of infants inside roasting pans. The parents of these children were 100% okay with this, as they thought it was a joke. Can't imagine being one of those parents.
Paper Will has a segment on this guy in his mini doc "The Ugly Side of Kids TV". Cant recommend it enough.
Yeah like I said there were a lot of things in those chat records I didn’t want to say. The pizza party stuff is in the video though.
Finally! We're getting something new. I've been watching your other iceberg videos on repeat recently so thanks for uploading a new one
hey thanks Ronald! i'm stoked to share this one with everyone
@@joeyengelman You should do a creepy advert/PSA iceberg! Your style is made for it.

thank you for watching! so happy that you see what I see with this amazing group of people during a really fascinating time
@@joeyengelman Journalism like this connects generations. You're doing important work my friend, and thank you for it 🌝
This is fucking wild - this is the third person I've seen today who's been using my research. Yes, I am Emerson Nosreme. You can find me featured in Ramtro Studio's video about Goth Public Access.
fun fact: I certainly know that Media Factory (some people who took over VCAM) actually has archived another show Rael did called Post Mortem Espresso. It's not publicly archived sadly and due to the fact that Rael used a fuck ton of copyrighted material, I don't know if it'll be published. Death's head theatre is likely lost forever though, outside of the goth public access.
Then again as far as I'm aware I'm the only one looking for it. So, maybe someone has it? doubt it though.
My Lost Media Forum comment about the Pink Morning Cartoon has popped up twice now too, which is really fun to see.
In the 90s, I grew up with Homework Help. Just a lady with an old school overhead projector helping 12 year olds with fractions.
Also, there was MPD: Cops in Montgomery. It was basically C.O.P.S. but in Montgomery Alabama. You'd sometimes see people you knew on there. Basically a jack boot propaganda show, but unintentionally hilarious.
Something I really enjoy about this video is that you have found something nice to say about literally everything on this iceberg, it's really refreshing in a way to see:')
I feel like in some extent YT killed public access. But you rarely find anything as strange on YT that was on public access. The public access shows were a different kind of strange
I remember caddicarus' video on gaming in the Clinton years, and he perfectly describes the random nature of the show.
My favourite part is that it's still a running gag to this day
The theme song just jumps up on u
if theres anything on here im gonna watch, its absolutely gonna be mrs mouth. something about the laughter from whoevers playing her is way too contagious to keep away. its so weird but i love when a stupid thing is just people having fun
I love that you can hear people off camera laughing as well. Not even they can resist Mrs. Mouth's silliness.
their laugh killllls me 😂
If I had a nickel for every time I was at a party in Portland in the late 80s/early 90s and heard the phrase, "Oh, shit. Here comes Spagg with a couple of hookers and a camera."
I almost gave up on the veracity of this video until you got to Jim. As a point of specificity, Spagg placed a camera under a glass coffee table, then proceeded to poo.
Also, TV Party is the greatest use of Public Access of all time. Available to stream on the Night Flight app.
I never knew how much I needed this public access tv show compilation in my life until now.
The majority of these give me this intangible, indescribable creepy-adjacent feeling that's equal parts unfamiliar nostalgia and the uneasy dread of impending doom. Like I'm watching media from an alternate dimension I shouldn't be privy to.
I like that you dont censor yourself for the sake of monetization or the ‘algorithm.’ lots of other youtubers make light of serious and disturbing situations by using funny or goofy words in place of certain words.
Whats the difference
@@cdogthehedgehog6923 what’s the difference between treating a subject with dignity as opposed to making light of heavy topics for sake of revenue? is that what you’re asking?

I hope we get a true Unwind with the Sweeties revival. The fact it never got picked up Adult Swim is still surprising to me.
I think Adult Swim has a line when it comes to weird programming. Smiling Friends was a weird show, and it did okay on Adult Swim
Sister Who seems like such a genuinely good, loving person. I wish Denver (the person behind Sister Who) nothing but the best in life and hope they are doing well as it's been quite awhile since we've gotten any updates on their whereabouts or had any Sister Who content and last I heard, they was having some housing issues. Prayers going out to you, Sister! ❤️
Update 2/15/24: I very recently had a chance to speak with the person who runs Sister Who's social media pages (Brian aka Sister Flirt) and while Sister Who has luckily found stable housing, they unfortunately are currently suffering from an undiagnosed neurological condition that is making it all but impossible for them to continue any Sister Who content for the foreseeable future, sadly. ☹️
It’s so surreal to see this type of footage survive generations. If the time machine never gets invented, this will probably be as close as we get to experiencing regular life in the past.
There was not one regular person, I just saw degenerates.
I have very faint memories of Homeless in Denton 😂 I lived in north Texas half my life and it was hard not to know about all the weird, strange public access TV from all over the state. The Austin ones were probably the wildest.
Wilbur is one of the most wholesome old men of all time
So happy to see you again Joey, love watching these when I’m on downtime at work
thanks Aidan that means a lot!
YES JOEY IS BACK
This is what I wanted, an iceberg about the predecessor to RUclips.
A free psychic reading show was a fever dream show. It feels like this show was escaped from sitcom show or comedy film
It feels like an SNL skit that Eddie Murphy would do during his time on the show.
The amount of research you must’ve had to do for this is insane!
mrs mouth may have shown up in the amazing world of gumball
This vid is so incredibly wholesome. It's easy to make fun of people for doing whatever float their boat for all to see, but you treat every person here with kindness and understanding about their weird (in the best way possible) craft.
Wasn't exactly sure what this would be like when I clicked. And it was way better than I ever could have imagined. Good job dude! So much crazy fun
hey thanks Roxy!
I can’t imagine Sister Who getting kicked out of somewhere. I find their appearance very soothing for some reason, but even if it gave me a fright - they’re such a calm persona and extremely modest in dress
Would love if videos like this would link to available footage and label what physical sources are used. Literally the only reason i watch stuff like this is to try to find rabbit holes to go down finding the actual footage since short clips and baseline commentary from an empty room aren't enough for me.
sorry, I linked some in the description, I’ll try to keep filling it out with more
please never stop making these they're amazing
hey thank you so much!
I'm surprised so many of these public access shows are just downright wholesome.
Love the amount of work you put into these Joey; keep up the great work.
thank you, means a lot!
The ending got me, didn't see that coming. Great stuff
Sister Who has the coolest makeup ever
As someone who saw episodes of Jerkbeast back when they were on youtube, it's deeply funny seeing it at tier 1- with what was said on the program, it'd easily make tier 6.
I really like Sister Who's make-up and overall attire!

Not even a minute in, and this psychic guy has me howling with laughter
Great video, honestly surprised myself with the sheer quantity of shows I knew. The cult one on the last tier is truly insane, could spiral hours downward the insane actions of that man. Wild.
It will always be fascinating to see how innovative the public access scene was back in the day. They were the first youtubers/streamers in a pre-internet world.
I wonder if Becky and Joe were inspired by Mystic Kids FunTime, or if it was a coincidence and they just are both fever dream puppet shows
Fascinating video! Love TV Party; would never have known about it without this so thank you Joey 😉
This is the best iceberg creator, most people are lazy with it , have bad concepts or editing or explain almost nothing
I just rewatched your other icebergs last week! Its like you’re psychic!
I never heard of any of these shows at all. But I love them now.
me too :')
Oh my god, starting off strong with CB. Walker.
So, I used to listen to a podcast called Distorted View when I was an edgy teen and whilst I couldn't even imagine listening to that now, I will say that I learnt a lot about pre-internet 'lolcows' through the podcast. CB Walker was one of them and I love how he just assumed every call was a prank and wouldn't even give people the chance to even try and be sincere, because he would immediately berate them or hang up. It's also where I learnt about Cleo (who I'm sure is also on this list at some point).
It's where I also first learned about Chris-Chan and also the infamous ''Shut Up Little Man!' recordings.
I'm making the podcast sound good, but it was actually super sophomoric and I can't even mention the kind of stuff he would play because I don't want to anger the youtube comment overlords.
EDIT:
George Wood is literally my God. The first man to do a video review on Earthbound and praising it.
You can't be more ahead of the curve than that. Take that, gamers.
LAST EDIT: I bet David Liebe Hart is on here somewhere.
