    Just say you wanted to defend modern superhero movies

      I still love abilities etc. I just won't watch stuff like avengers. I will watch old marvel shows or "the boys" etc.
      Superhero stuff still hasn't been milked to death, the issue is that people are releasing lackluster stuff

    Yeah, that's what happens when you take what you like and turn it to a job, and I imagine directors/actors/etc. have it even worse, hence why many don't watch their own movies.
    I kinda appreciate Ebert and Siskel and Pauline Kael for being critics that never felt that way.

      Yeah, taking your hobby and turning it into a job makes it a different experience entirely.

    Some good thoughts! Especially about the popular opinion effect. I try to avoid reviews, discussions and trailers before watching movies in cinemas, and just watch what appeals to me based on posters and synopsis. It’s amazing how many movies I’ve sincerely enjoyed and found to be great that I go online after seeing and they’re declared the worst by huge swathes of the internet. I’ve almost developed a contrarian instinct because of it- when everyone says a movie is trash, I want to see it more and find out if I think they’re right or if it will surprise me and be. A misunderstood gem I can passionately defend.
    I’ve not seen any of your videos before, this just got recommended to me - but I looked through your channel and while I don’t begrudge you playing the RUclips game, you said extremism gets you popular and your titles are rather clickbaity and extreme. I clicked on this video thinking it was gonna be an expose about how the two reviewers in the thumbnail don’t actually watch movies- not watch them in a different way, just do not watch the movies they review period. Aren’t you contributing to the problem?

      Hi, don't get me wrong though, I didn't make the video to "call out" anyone, I just wanted to narrate the experience of a movie Reviewer from what I've seen from my friends, who are movie critics and reviewers - and my experience as well. I was bored, and that's what led to this video 😅.
      Don't think too much of it as like a crises or anything. It's the grind of the job and it is what it is.
      Many movie reviewers put their hearts and soul into the job, but sometimes they do have to get that bread as well.

    Great video man, I’ve also suspected that movie reviewers/critics probably don’t watch movies from the perspective of enjoyment. I think if you do something and it starts feeling like a job. It’s easy for you to start feeling like you need to cut corners to get the job done sometimes. I kinda felt the same way when I first started on RUclips last year.

      Oh I've always known that. Same with games. Reviewers very rarely actually enjoy what they do which makes them terrible at their job lol
      They're basically just decent writers who make their money this way.
      And make no mistake, youtubers are no different. A lot of the time they're much worse because they're not held to any standards at all.

      Sometimes it isn't their fault necessarily though, some of them have it as jobs, especially writers for publications and they have deadlines to meet up with and whatnot.
      And in the case of RUclipsrs, some RUclipsrs generally regard the platform as a business model and nothing more.
      That said, there are still lots of reviewers who put their hearts into their work, like Jeremy Jahns, i think.
      Oh, and obviously me 😉

    On the topic of the overjustification effect, that's coincidentally probably the main thing that'd ever keep me from seeking to do the thing I _love_ (as opposed to merely like/tolerate) as a job rather than as a hobby.
    Were I to ever do RUclips I almost certainly would refrain from making it my main stream of income.

    Not true! I am a movie reviewer & critic and I never form my opinion based on the opinion(s) of other movie critics! I form MY OWN opinions, thank you very much, based on what I see and what I feel, so don't lump me in with your assumptions of what ALL reviewers do. And for the record, I watch the whole movie and enjoy movies...if they're any good.

    Critics have always been problematic. People go to movies they're interested in seeing, but critics will review movies they didn't want to see. Now we've got a lot of RUclips channels that review stuff that they used to like, but they're unhappy with the current state. I actually completely get that. Star Trek, Star Wars, Marvel, etc have put out a lot of bad stuff, but there's a lot of stuff gets panned just because it's not what they expected/wanted it to be. Plus, some movies are forgettable, but a fun way to spend a couple of hours. Those tend to get lumped in with bad now and they're not the same.

      @KingJosh-u5t  10 месяцев назад

      I wouldn't say critics are problematic though, they're just doing their jobs in the way they know is most effective. That said, there's gotta be more nuance to critiquing so as not to mislead people.
      And many reviewers still do give nuanced reviews, like Jeremy Jahns.
      Thanks for watching!

      "but critics will review movies they didn't want to see." That's why it's preferable if a magazine / channel have multiple critics, with different interests. That way they can always send the kind of people who might be actually interested in said movie.

  • @HugoStiglitz88

    I think sometimes they do but only the movies theyre genuinely excited to see. But imo, they should have to watch a movie twice to review a movie and the first time they shouldnt be thinking about their review at all

    • @KingJosh-u5t
      @KingJosh-u5t  11 месяцев назад +2

      Don't get me wrong though, I'm sure there are some reviewers that are very thorough and watch a movie multiple times before they even review it.
      But not all of them have the time, nor can afford to do that. Especially those who have it as a job.

    • @Kadmon06
      @Kadmon06 10 месяцев назад

      Truth to be told, I usually only watch a movie once for review purposes, so I'd experience the story in a way a regular audience member does. Sometimes I miss things. Sometimes I mishear dialogue. But this gives me a different perspective than those who get a DVD, stop it every minute, and analyse every aspect of the movie. I only go through a movie for a second time if I was entertained enough, and I'm still interested in those minute details that could enhance my experience, or add something to my reviews.

    I think you have some assumptions about others, based on your own experiences, without further proof. On the other hand, the topic of this video is interesting enough, and it would be useful to create a new video based on it, where you ask some reviewers about their own views, and gather some further info, beyond your own thoughts.
    Here are some of my own:
    1) You might feel anxious while watching a movie for making a review. After you get some experience, I hope this will go away (in a couple of years you'll probably be over that).
    2) Reviewers are able to enjoy a movie just like normal humans. After a while, examining the movie will come naturally, without further effort. You also need to learn to distance yourself from those examinations. For example, some of my favourite novels are mediocre works at most, but I happen to enjoy them because they caught my specific interests.
    3) When you decide what to review, don't check the RUclips or Google metrics. Otherwise you'd be inclined to watch a movie that doesn't interest you, even though there are already hundreds of review videos of that movie. If you watch the movies you'd prefer, it's more likely that you'll be able to find some hidden gem, and you'll be able to provide the first and only review. Although that might not make your video viral, in the long run, every single person interested in that movie will be watching your video, accumulating views.

    Except you can tell when they do vs they dont like pretty much everything about “critical drinker” laughable excuse for reviews are that where if it turned out he didn’t watch them then I wouldn’t be shocked, but jeremy jahns you can tell he watched the movie and is just talking about what he felt of the movie, like he doesn’t toe any line if he likes the movie hes gonna tell ya and if he found it bad hes gonna speak his mind, he doesn’t just go with whatever popular narrative is or has any political agenda with his reviews, which people like critical drinker is someone you cannot say about he definitely looks at everything through toeing the grifter line, disney bad and that’s about the surface lvl of any of his vids
