    This video goes through the general setting that I use and discusses the different modes available to process, with pros and cons for each.
    This video is focused on my audience of wildlife photographers, but the concepts apply to any genre. You'll note that "low light" is often used for other ultra low light situations (astrophotography for example), which I will not go over as most wildlife photography occurs at ISO 3200 and under. (I said MOST not all)

    Every once in awhile RUclips actually suggests a video site I didn't know about that turns out to be very good. This is one of them. I've watched many videos on Denoise Ai and have been using the application for several months now. This video did the best job of explaining in detail the differences between the 3 different modes. Very well done and I came away from it feeling my time had been well spent. Thanks!

    Very well explained. I recently purchased Denoise AI and was setting the sliders to 70-80%. The photos started to look fake as they were overly processed. I tried your settings as explained in this video and the results are much better! Thank you for the guidance in this area. Now I just need to make the same adjustments in Topaz sharpen AI

    Horses for courses . . . Lo Light is for low light and high ISO, Dnoise is for what it says and if you want to sharpen your images, use Sharpen AI at the end. Too many people want all their eggs in one basket! I also find that the Topaz suggested settings are usually very close and reliable, better than constantly mucking around with sliders.

    Just purchased it and its soooo good. I was doing the noise reduction in light room and compared to topaz its naff. no longer do I have to reduce noise then sharpen areas with the brush tool taking up memory. With Topaz Denoise not only was I surprised how well it did the noise reduction but how it sharped my images to. Rather than Lightrooms version if you sharpen you get noise and just makes the image terrible when adding noise reduction after. Best program I've purchased in a long time.

    As a new comer to these software suite I want to say first it’s a must. Having said that I would like the integration with LR would be better. The software takes awhile to do its magic but while working LR is locked from other editing. The Topaz software does not use the Mac parallel capabilities it seems. Also opening a file from LR in DeNoise or Topaz sharpener you have to select file type every time. Could have been easier and more smoother in my mind

    Nice vid and helpful -- I have and use all the Topaz Products -- but only as a final step in my workflow. I find the loss of control in Photo AI the most concerning and certain tools - like enhancer - should simply be ignored/never used. All the Topaz AI products seem to add some sharpening - DeNoise and GigaPixel AND so one has to turn these off or to their lowest settings. The advantage of Sharpening AI is one get to choose where sharpening is applied. The masking tool in Photo AI is clumsy at best - at worse it is dangerous. Sharpening can and does add artefacts. I am a fan of using these tools from Photoshop where one can use a masking layer to selectively choose which parts of the image receive the benefit of their adjustments. However, since the making and local adjustment tools in LRC have got so much better I find I rarely need to use PS anymore.
    Summary -- I have Photo AI, it came free as an add on to my bundle. I will not be paying for it, when this changes. I prefer the separate tools. I prefer the Topaz AI tools over every other tool I have used -- including the NIK tools and the built in tools in LRC, C1, PL6, Phocus 3.7 and so on.
    Every output that is to be posted online gets run through DeNoise AI even images shot at 64 ISO using automated settings -- the outputs simply look that tiny bit cleaner afterwards AND the backgrounds clean-up. I run a batch process and go and have a coffee.
    Anything shot at higher ISO receives a more comprehensive and tailored treatment.
    Outputs run through Silver Efex Pro and similar processes also get treated as well - I find that some filters/tools add a nasty roughness that certainly is not film grain that is less pleasing when seen on a screen.
    Every output designed to be printed is "finished" appropriate - contrasts/toning/denoise and sharpening to match with the printing process selected, paper to be used and the desired look of the finished print.

      My advice basically is similar to what you did. Get the Topaz bundle with each software now, get Photo AI free and see which works for you workflow. I am going to keep comparing but 2 weeks in I think I like Photo AI's results as much as Denoise. I am going to keep using Photo AI in part because I was to see the results of a variety of images.

    I find the lowlight mode is more for when there is really dark details you want to preserve, or really high ISO (25,000 on my D750).
    A long exposure at night at the beach, the other modes would just paint those details black.

    What type of CPU do you have?
    I was on AMD but recently switched to Intel - and everything seems at least 2 times as fast...probably much more.
    I also upgraded the processor to a 12700F but I wasn't expecting such a speed increase. I heard a lot of the photo programs are better optimized for Intel CPUs.

      For me I open directly in to photoshop from the raw file. I know a lot of people convert to a TIFF file first but I dont see the value in that for my workflow. I always keep the base layer (with noise) duplicate, open with the PS plugin and do noise reduction on a separate layer in PS.

    Not sure why you applied Color Noise Reduction. Your photo didn't appear to have any color noise even with tight zoon..

    • @WildlifeInspired
      @WildlifeInspired  3 года назад

      I generally apply a little color noise as a default, the amount applied, if low doesn't usually impact the impact the image either way. But yes, probably wasn't needed for this image, but I think I was referencing what my general settings might look like. The real point I wanted to make is to be careful with that slider, it can really degrade the images when it starts to push over 30-40 on the slider

  • @markrigg6623
    @markrigg6623 3 года назад +2

    I've tried but I just can't get results I'm happy with using topaz. It's brilliant at selecting soft de focused backgrounds and removing the noise. But on fine feather detail it just tampers with the image way too much. The artefacts it generates are just insane. You get all this staircase zippering of pixels, and its actually clumping pixels together into these homogeneous rows. Doing this, its actually reducing the resolution of the image to the point I feel there's no point to me owning that high resolution sensor with no low pass filter. And no doubt this has something to with the introduction of the masking facility in its recent update. Because I have to mask all of a bird out and only allow it to work on the background. I'm not at all interested in posting on social media, I want to see all that detail I'm capturing. It's just unusable on my bigger prints and very disheartening pixel peeping on the computer. It's very noticeable that with all these glowing you tube vids no one ever zooms right in to 400% or more. It's just not pretty. I've paid for it and God knows I've tried to love it, but sadly for me it remains the most over rated photography product that I've come across.

    • @WildlifeInspired
      @WildlifeInspired  3 года назад

      how do you deal with noise reduction overall, especially on low light images? I agree that there are some issues and certainly not a one stop shop for everyone. I'd venture 99% of all wildlife images end up ONLY on social media, so for a quick edit, I find it really helpful and I think for a lot of people they are in the same boat. For me I post every day on social media, so this works well on my images which are usually 3000-5000px then downsized to 1500 as a generic web size. I have however used this on prints as large as 24x36 on high contrast metal and when dialed in properly, I can't see the issues. If someone thinks however, they are going to take 2000px run it through any algorithm, upsize it for a 3 foot print... that just isn't going to ever look good. Thanks for the feedback.

    • @markrigg6623
      @markrigg6623 3 года назад

      Yes it's very quick to use and certainly on social media won't have easily visible issues. But then again both noise and detail aren't anywhere as visible on social media either! The photo is being dumbed down.

    • @letni9506
      @letni9506 2 года назад

      Much of what you said I agree with.
      I find less is more when using it.
      Its good at getting rid of what looks like motion blur and sharpening animals eyes.
      Things can look atrocious if you pixel peep but if you view at 100% on a monitor images can look nice. I suppose looking good at 100% is what's important. Phones look great until you zoom in too.
      The key is to not use it too aggressively and don't pixel peep. 😀

    • @markrigg6623
      @markrigg6623 2 года назад

      @@letni9506 Yes I agree with not overdoing things. Even when I've been as careful as possible, cropping or doing A2 prints the artefacts are visible in many images in the normal viewing conditions This I believe is why they had to introduce the masking feature. So its effectively reducing the apparent resolution of my cameras specifically I bought for these abilities. So yes, its use case dependant and I just wish all the reviewers would show its effects at a pixel level and not just globally. Because it can matter as I found out the hard way. Anyway thanks for the reply, appreciate it.

      @WildlifeInspired  3 года назад +2

      Not sure I understand the question. When I say the D850 is not a great low light camera, I am comparing it to sensors on the D4s, D5, D750, and even the Z6ii. I think most would agree that those Nikon bodies perform better in low light. The D850, for the record is my favorite body, but I would shoot another body if I knew low light was a concern.
