I belive Hayley's love for Elijah was enough. She just loved her daughter more and desire to keep her safe and protect her innocence was way more important for her.

I remember the first time I watched this seeing Elijah break as he remembered his love for Hayley and contributing to her death. I cried so hard. The actor portrayed that beautifully.

Antoinette should of been honest about who her mother really was. Elijah walked in on war.
The only thing he knew was to protect his fiancé brother. He was kind of manipulated in a way.
According to the actor he said he felt thrown under the bus with this story line.
In the script was actually worst with Hayley death. He manage to get it to tone down.
So who knows what the hell they made the character do on the first write.
Now to the creator she said she broke them up because Elijah was abusive to Hayley on that episode when she went threw that red door.
Pretty much tells me she don't understand her own show. She walked threw a violent memory it had nothing to do with Hayley.
But that is Julie Plec so im not surprise.
