Please...pay no attention to critics or audiences negative reviews. Horizon is an extraordinary film in it's story, scope & beauty. Many reviews have mentioned too many characters, empty characterizations, meandering plotlines, etc. Kevin Costner's movie is a great cinematic achievement. He should be very proud. The standing ovation he received at Cannes film festival was well deserved & anyone who enjoys great cinema should take 3 hours out of a day & see this unflinching look back at a piece of our nation's history. If you've seen Game of Thrones or House of Dragons, this film is a walk in the park to follow compared to those epic series. Part One is a setup guys. Characters will grow & evolve, plotlines will flesh out & resolve as the series continues. From the harrowing opening scenes, the mood was set & the film goer is transported to another place in time. The cinematography was stunning in it's ability to make one feel as if you were actually living those times. Your emotions will run the gamut from the first reel to the last in Costner's quest to bring history alive. A fan long before Yellowstone, I went into the theatre owing nothing to what I'd read or heard prior to seeing this movie. So happy with that decision, because it was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon at the movies. No sci-fi, no CGI, no superpowers. Just a good old-fashioned western. Note...if you don't care for westerns & that time in our history, don't buy a ticket. It WILL be a waste of time however, if you love film & great storytelling, relatable characters & breathtaking scenery, check out Kevin Costner's passion project. It will be well worth the time & money. Can't wait for Horizon Part Two!

My only issue, and it's not even an issue for me, is that it feels more like an epic TV series more so than a movie theater experience, but other than that, I thought it was really good. We need more well done westerns, it's an under explored genre presently.
An excellent Western from a legendary actor/director. My father raised me on good westerns and Horizon is most definitely up towards the top now. It's so rare to get a beautifully crafted movie with timeless concepts and ideas that will hold up in the years to come unlike a lot of the tripe released by Hollywood and Disney. I am excited to see the second installment in Horizon. Thank you Mr. Costner for your time and dedication to quality. Id also like to add that it amazes me that RT critics and other sources are whining about a PART 1 OF 3 film being incomplete. Part 2 was supposed to release quickly Aug 16th since it's essentially one long journey but now it's been pulled due to idiotic critic review bombing from the same types of fools that praise shows from Disney streaming like Star Wars Acolyte. If you love Westerns go support this movie and keep in mind it's meant to be a saga 3 part journey.
As a kid I'd leave the room when my dad started watching his old westerns, just couldn't understand it. Clint Eastwood changed that for me when I got older, he single handily made me love the genre. Kevin Costner is doing the same for this generation and this film is no different. I understand the complaints about the length or "disjointed" feeling but I'm going to be blunt; that's a result of today's society. Everyone wants their hand held and they want quick satisfaction. This is a telling of American expansion, seen through different experiences and with epic scenery. This isn't a story cooked in a microwave, ready and served in 2 minutes. The movie is a slow grilled brisket, smoked and seasoned just right and when it's finally ready it'll melt in your mouth. I could see this being a very successful Netflix 10 part series but think the best experience of this film(s) is on the big screen. My one negative criticism of Chapter 1 was showing scenes from Chapter 2 at the end. I felt like there were way too many spoilers and things I didn't want to know, I wanted to experience them for the first time when that Chapter is released. Thank you Kevin Costner, cast and most definitely the crew for bringing this to the screen!
Totally agree about the "preview" segment at the end. We're watching at home, so, luckily, we could hit pause and (after several WTF's) jump off and save the action for the next chapter's film. (Not sure if it was same in theaters, but there was no clear ending to the Part 1 storyline - the "preview" was tacked on the end with no break, announcement or warning, and it took us a few minutes to realize what was happening... THAT was very confusing and confounding 😖😤 My husband and I hate the super-detailed, jam-packed Previews that have been the norm for at least the past 15 years... we joke (when we're in a theater) that, "Well, I guess we don't need to see THAT movie now!" 🙄😒 So, my STRONG SUGGESTION to anyone watching at home: cut it off when the action starts getting frenzied at the end (sorry, can't tell you the exact timestamp, but it's at least 5 - 7 minutes before the closing credits) - BIG spoilers, and not at all enjoyable after watching almost 3 hours of glorious, leisurely storytelling! A stunning, fascinating, EPIC film! Well done, Kevin!! (well, except for the preview, lol 😉) 👏👏👏 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Chapter 1 of Horizon was fabulous. The movie has a lot of action and some plot surprises. 3 hours went by super fast. I loved the sharp images on the large screen. I felt like I was watching what life was really like in 1800's. I loved how each storyline was revisited toward the end with a shorter segment to wrap it up until the next installment. The movie flows immediately into storyline glimpse into the next Chapter. Fantastic work by Costner. The actors and actresses portrail of hardship, overcoming challenges together, inter-conflicts, different perspectives, and tension with Indian natives was believable. I have a deeper appreciation for what the early Americans went through. Many thanks to Kevin and many folks who made this film. I am looking forward to all future Chapters.
What an absolute brilliant Western. Can't wait for the next chapter to come out. Nothing short of an incredible cast and remarkable cinematography. I think the kind of dotted style of plot that is used will turn some off, especially at first, but it quickly hooks you. The way the plot jumps to different characters oddly reminds me of GOT, but it certainly has the grit of No Country for Old Men, True Grit and Hell or High Water. I think the grit and realism really makes this stand out among Westerns. Certainly would rival anything Taylor Sheridan has produced in terms of realism and romanticism. The cinematography really stands out.
I certainly enjoyed this film and love that it is meant to be a cinema mini series. I'll be seeing them all, for sure. It absolutely transports you away from the here and now - the atmosphere, settings, music, etc are immersive. There are a lot of characters, yes, but I didnt find it hard to keep up for the most part. You aren't going to get backstory, at least in film one - you are jumping back to a moment in time and you follow the characters from that point onward. I don't mind that at all - very slice of life. It has so many incredible moments that really show how so much has changed, but also so little has changed. It is balanced, nuanced and (for the most part) the casting is superb. I can't wait to see how more and more of these stories collide and shape each other and the new nation.
Just watched the film yesterday and I really am not a big American west frontier genre of films kinda guy and not really a big Costner fan but I enjoyed the movie. Like most movies it has its up and downs but for a 3 hour screen time I can say I enjoyed the film. Cinematography was great, performances were great, Lizzie, a new talent gave a great performance for being just 13. She and the mother in the action scene were great. Some love interests sprout and some dissolved. The multi storylines are not hard to follow. I don’t hear well and could not catch some of the names but not many were revealed I don’t believe. The every day life of settlers and indigenous people is what Costner is getting to (in my opinion) not trying to tell a specific story of any one individual. I’ll probably watch it again to pick up on things I may have missed. I do that with films I find intriguing. For the price of my ticket (less than $13) and 3 hours of at times riveting entertainment, if you want to put it in terms of bang for your buck; money well spent. I’m no movie critic but I do know I enjoyed the film. Can’t wait for the next chapter. I hope this helps people like me that just know if a movie is bad or good and not get too into the weeds of filmmaking. Great job Mr. Costner
It'll make you understand the American Spirit! The cinematography is breathtaking!! It's heartbreaking, dramatic, brutal, funny, hopeful & inspiring. It shows the reality of what ALL people went through when the West was settled. It blends stories of American Indians, Mexicans, Chinese & Europeans. It shows the reality of the human spirit needed to survive this mass migration - the American Indians fighting for their lands & the settlers trying to make a new life in uncharted territory. There were a lot of story lines & it was a bit hard to remember who was who but I think after #2 you'll see how their stories will start to come together. (Reminds me of watching Game of Thrones in the 1st season) I really cannot say enough about this film - I'm glad Kostner waited until now to make it - our country needs a film like this to remind of us who we are - the good & bad. Everyone should go see this movie. It was truly beautiful. I'm so excited for the next chapter.
The initial pacing might feel deliberate and a slow burn orchestrated by a genre veteran like Kevin Costner. His vision for how these threads will converge is evident, building anticipation for the characters' inevitable collision.
Because of the deveoping storyline and many different characters, this 3 hour movie time goes by very quickly... Especially for someone, like myself, who loves both the history or our Western culture and watching a good western movie! Clearly not for someone wanting to just be entertained with a few top actors and a fast moving plot. But there is enough quality acting and action with a central theme to the movie to keep one interested and also parts that I found to be extremely emotional, thru the many different developing storylines throughout the film. Also, the cinematography is exceptional thru the director's eye, in capturing both the beauty and the unblemished part of our West.
I get why some people were put off by the ever moving scene switching and how long winded this movie was. It felt very much so like 3 episodes of a series. As a feature film, I think it would have been more smooth if they cut some stuff and utilized that time elsewhere. I won't debate whether it should have been a series or a movie, but what I can say is that there is some absolute gold here. It is a great theatrical experience in my opinion. Some acting comes up short, but only from lesser characters who don't have much screen time and it didnt take me out of the story like usual. I really hope the studio allows Costner (my guy) to follow up part 2 with parts 3 and 4. Dances with wolves is one of my favorite movies of all time, and the first hour and a half alone made me feel right at home and my money well spent. The rest was icing on the cake...the soundtrack, do not get me started. Amazing.

Costner, for lack of better words, has reverse engineered Yellowstone and I think movie theatre chains owe him a huge thank you. He is creating a series and getting it into theatres first, before going to streaming and this model of creating "seasons" (as Horizon 2,3,4 are around the corner) integrates both the best of the theater experience combined with the streaming experience. This model, mark my words, will get replicated and while Horizon 1 may not enjoy huge box office success immediately, just watch the $ it generates worldwide with streaming. Subsequent releases will just grow in popularity. The movie itself is well written and the scenery on the screen is classic Costner. I like the fact that you can see the dirt and the real way people lived, and died. It is a darker world than the typical western, which it should be. I loved it and the three hours went by very fast. Don't let that hinder you from seeing on the big screen.
The theater owners put Horizon on 3300 screens across the US for 2 weeks around 4th of July. And all they got in return was empty theaters because nobody showed up. That's why they cancelled Chapter 2 because they know it's going flop even worse and they'd Loss even More Money.
Horizont is a great movie. Excellent actors, great music and a fantastically well told story of the settlement of America. The story is harsh and the wonderful scenery completes the story of several individuals who, with great determination, travel to their dream home. It is a great introduction to the following events. Kevin Costner did an excellent job.❤❤❤
My dad took me to see this movie, and we were asking ourselves that as we sat through three hours of this incoherence. There are way too many storylines of which to keep track, and since you have so many storylines, that means that you have even more characters - and it is no help when just about none of them have names. The only names that I caught in three entire hours were Lizzie, the girl whose father and brother died in the Indian massacre; Mary, the hooker; and Russel, a random boy who survived the massacre. The one arrogant Indian guy had a name, too, but I can't remember what it was.
LEft me feeling a bit confused and was hoping for some better character builds but just jumped around alot. The 3 hours did fly by though so must have been engaging for sure for me. The ending confused me as well and finally realized it was just a big commercial for the 2nd chapter, which was strange.
I thought it was amazing! It was filmed in beautiful scenery. I watched it a couple of times to understand the characters because I watched it from in the middle the first time on HBO.
I like Kevin Costner and really wanted to like this movie but it felt way too disjointed and downright frustrating to watch at moments. There is no consistent main character and Costner's character doesn't even get introduced until more than halfway through the very long runtime. Only three characters out of about fifty actually get named so it's difficult to follow them or get invested in their story when you don't actually know anything about them. The story bounces back and forth between four or five different groups at seemingly random times and often just as their story is becoming vaguely interesting. Most of the scenes seem aimless and there is absolutely no sense of how all these scenes and characters connect together at least in the first chapter. I'm fine with setup and introduction for a long epic story but in my humble opinion each film should still feel like it has a beginning, middle and end and be able to stand on it's own in some way. Unfortunately this movie seems like it was made by people who have no understanding of how to write and edit a consistent story.

I watched it all the way through hoping that eventually it would make sense, just in time to see the ending (?) where they apparently are showing what the sequel will be about. With no lead in, such as “In the next chapter…” I’m already ADHD, I don’t need any help in getting confused.
This AI voice and monologue is shite. Horizon Chapter 1 is an amazing film showing the Westward Expansion of America. Is it perfect no? But, it's very, very good. It's a 3 hour long art piece telling multiple storylines over the various chapters. It shows the brutality of the prairie natives but it also shows how the natives were beaten into submission. It does show that life was hard but it doesn't show how life was that hard. A lot of pretty people playing costume on the set but still meaningful stories that should be remembered when you think about how the westward expansion was. How life was hard for whites, natives, and Chinese people. How traveling in a covered wagon 14 hours a day for 7-8 months was hard and soul-breaking. The white fear of the natives was worse than the actual fear of what they eventually start to do as they were continually harassed and disrespected in their territory. Which caused them to be more aggressive as more and more people traversed their lands without respect. Sure, the Comanches, Apaches, and Kiowas were the worst but others were more civilized. If you lived in those times, you wouldn't be judging them from behind your iPhone sipping a double shot lite iced macchiato with no whip. They were meat and potatoes kind of people, if they were lucky.
It was a very underwhelming film. Beatiful cinematography but doesnt have much else going for it. Too many charcters and jumping around. Never have enough time with any one character to gice a feeling of attatchment to care what happens to them. Do all the random plot lines come together in the end? Guess we'll have to wait and see. And what happened to fella at the beggining who found the father and son that were surveying? Never saw him die but it showed 3 graves later. Plenty of other questions left unanswered but ill wait untill the series is complete to ask all of those. Also, Kostner and the girl playing Marygold have ZERO chemistry together. Strange casting there

He is creating a series and getting it into theatres first, before going to streaming and this model of creating "seasons" (as Horizon 2,3,4 are around the corner) integrates both the best of the theater experience combined with the streaming experience.
This model, mark my words, will get replicated and while Horizon 1 may not enjoy huge box office success immediately, just watch the $ it generates worldwide with streaming. Subsequent releases will just grow in popularity.
The movie itself is well written and the scenery on the screen is classic Costner. I like the fact that you can see the dirt and the real way people lived, and died.
It is a darker world than the typical western, which it should be.
I loved it and the three hours went by very fast. Don't let that hinder you from seeing on the big screen.
The theater owners put Horizon on 3300 screens across the US for 2 weeks around 4th of July. And all they got in return was empty theaters because nobody showed up. That's why they cancelled Chapter 2 because they know it's going flop even worse and they'd Loss even More Money.
Horizont is a great movie. Excellent actors, great music and a fantastically well told story of the settlement of America.
The story is harsh and the wonderful scenery completes the story of several individuals who, with great determination, travel to their dream home. It is a great introduction to the following events. Kevin Costner did an excellent job.❤❤❤
My dad took me to see this movie, and we were asking ourselves that as we sat through three hours of this incoherence. There are way too many storylines of which to keep track, and since you have so many storylines, that means that you have even more characters - and it is no help when just about none of them have names. The only names that I caught in three entire hours were Lizzie, the girl whose father and brother died in the Indian massacre; Mary, the hooker; and Russel, a random boy who survived the massacre. The one arrogant Indian guy had a name, too, but I can't remember what it was.
LEft me feeling a bit confused and was hoping for some better character builds but just jumped around alot. The 3 hours did fly by though so must have been engaging for sure for me. The ending confused me as well and finally realized it was just a big commercial for the 2nd chapter, which was strange.
I thought it was amazing! It was filmed in beautiful scenery. I watched it a couple of times to understand the characters because I watched it from in the middle the first time on HBO.
I like Kevin Costner and really wanted to like this movie but it felt way too disjointed and downright frustrating to watch at moments. There is no consistent main character and Costner's character doesn't even get introduced until more than halfway through the very long runtime. Only three characters out of about fifty actually get named so it's difficult to follow them or get invested in their story when you don't actually know anything about them. The story bounces back and forth between four or five different groups at seemingly random times and often just as their story is becoming vaguely interesting. Most of the scenes seem aimless and there is absolutely no sense of how all these scenes and characters connect together at least in the first chapter. I'm fine with setup and introduction for a long epic story but in my humble opinion each film should still feel like it has a beginning, middle and end and be able to stand on it's own in some way. Unfortunately this movie seems like it was made by people who have no understanding of how to write and edit a consistent story.
Thank you! I’m confused by all these positive reviews. I watched it all the way through hoping that eventually it would make sense, just in time to see the ending (?) where they apparently are showing what the sequel will be about. With no lead in, such as “In the next chapter…”

Horizon Chapter 1 is an amazing film showing the Westward Expansion of America. Is it perfect no? But, it's very, very good. It's a 3 hour long art piece telling multiple storylines over the various chapters. It shows the brutality of the prairie natives but it also shows how the natives were beaten into submission. It does show that life was hard but it doesn't show how life was that hard. A lot of pretty people playing costume on the set but still meaningful stories that should be remembered when you think about how the westward expansion was. How life was hard for whites, natives, and Chinese people.
How traveling in a covered wagon 14 hours a day for 7-8 months was hard and soul-breaking. The white fear of the natives was worse than the actual fear of what they eventually start to do as they were continually harassed and disrespected in their territory. Which caused them to be more aggressive as more and more people traversed their lands without respect. Sure, the Comanches, Apaches, and Kiowas were the worst but others were more civilized.
If you lived in those times, you wouldn't be judging them from behind your iPhone sipping a double shot lite iced macchiato with no whip. They were meat and potatoes kind of people, if they were lucky.

Is it really so hard to get a real person to narrate the story. These AI voices sound so fake it puts you off the movie.
It was a very underwhelming film. Beatiful cinematography but doesnt have much else going for it. Too many charcters and jumping around. Never have enough time with any one character to gice a feeling of attatchment to care what happens to them. Do all the random plot lines come together in the end? Guess we'll have to wait and see. And what happened to fella at the beggining who found the father and son that were surveying? Never saw him die but it showed 3 graves later. Plenty of other questions left unanswered but ill wait untill the series is complete to ask all of those. Also, Kostner and the girl playing Marygold have ZERO chemistry together. Strange casting there
