Yamaha Montage: How To Backup And Restore Data In One File
HTML-код

- I received a question about the backup and restore process on the Montage. In this video I show how to backup all the settings in a single file as well as where you go to restore that file later. It's a great way to save the state of your Montage with all the extra libraries and presets you've added for quick recall later.

5 yrs later (now 2023) I still watch this vid when I forget how to save/load the full Montage data - great vid !!
Glad to help!
Thank you very much! This was exactly the info I was seeking to back up my files for a system update.
Glad to help!
Thank you Sir. Had to get ANOTHER MODX 8 due to my first one needing some work done on it. I've done and loaded a lot of samples and User Files, and even sounds libraries. Thanks for the video!
Glad to help!
Very helpful - thank You for Your tutorial - it's great for newbies as me ! Best wishes from Vienna/Austria
Glad to help, thanks for watching!
So happy I find this page. Can you please tell me how to find portamento in the MODX? I need to find where to affect the sounds and tweak them.
I'm not sure about portamento specifically, but when you're on a performance you can hit the edit button to edit your parts or the individual elements and other options for the sound.
@@SoundsAndGear thanks very much.
@@SmallAxeMP No problem
Thanks for excellent, detail, step by step help. Really appreciate it Sir!! :)
Glad to help, thanks for watching!
I say thank ya my bruhthem!!🤟🏾🤟🏾
Glad to help!
Thank you sir!! Much needed.
Thanks for watching!
Very useful video.. Thank u.. Will all my user performances which I have made also. Get backed up for. Me to restore later? Or only preset libraries
I believe it backs up everything.
Is it possible to copy sounds from mods as a wave file or any other file?
I'm not sure, I haven't used one in a few years.
Thank you. Does backup automatically backup User created performances and User created Live Sets?
Any recommendations on best (USB) size to use?
I believe it backs up everything if I recall correctly. I'd say at least 8gb but bigger if you can just in case you have a lot of libraries and such you want to keep on there too.
Thanks bought a scan disk 64 gig. Bought one of those little flat ones like computer wireless mouse receiver so I can just leave it in the board.

Appreciate the reply
Cool
Anyone know ow to fully back up from an original version 1.2 OS? It doesn't have the "Backup File" option in the utility Content Type dropdown menu.
Hmmm, I'm not sure, you may have to backup separate files for the libraries, user section, etc.
Have the same question ... No `back up file` to my synth, too..
Is it possible to transfer backup from old modx8 to the modx8 +
I’m not sure
But if the new update has new performances.. And I restore my backup file.. It won't wipe any new performances that came with the update yes?
I need to save all my user performances.. Will this method work?
The new performances aren't stored in the user section so you should be ok
Is there a way that you could only save your User Live Set to an USB and load it on a different Montage?
Yeah, in the file menu you can save/backup your contents. As long as the other Montage has the same libraries it will work. If it's just using internal sounds it will work for sure.
I still cannot backup! Itis pissing me off! File Backup options are not showing like in your video. And yet I formatted the flash. The SAVE AS NEW FILE option is not showing on my screen the way it is on yours..Am using MODX8
Not sure what the issue is, I'd suggest contacting Yamaha support or ask on their forum.
@@SoundsAndGear hey man really liked the video. Would you be open for a phone call. I have a question. I saved and backed up. But I don’t know what saved. I see the back file I saved when I plug in the USB to my computer. Havnt yet loaded in the keyboard at the church. Hope it works
Thanks for watching! I am not available for phone calls but suggest contacting Yamaha if you’re having any issues.
if i copy all of my data from modx, can i copy them to a montage? i wanna make an upgrade
should be able to, check with Yamaha to be sure
Had a question
When ever I register a performance in a live set with a change in transpose in it I find that the transpose does not get saved (it gets back to normal 0) . How can I save any performance With a transpose with it?
Plz help..
I'm not sure, I no longer have this unit in my setup so I can't check it.
if i connect the usb stick to a computer, i cant see the file...but it is there, the modx can see the file. any idea?
No, not sure what's up with that.
I did a backup before going to version 3.. now the backup says file error, would you know why?
No clue, I no longer have this so not sure if what 3.0 changed, if it is a bug, or just a random error. You'd have to contact Yamaha support.
Hi, how can i permanently upload a loop or style onto modx via USB flash drive. Have tried this and i can actually play the beats when the USB flash drive is connected but i want the style to be permanently stored on the keyboard?
Also, how can i store the created pattern loop on the Keyboard not on USB?
Thanks
I'm not sure, you may have to import it and save it to your user library.
@@SoundsAndGear ok
Pls how
@@ayotundeolubiyi sorry I no longer have this but the manual should describe how to add samples to the device.
Can I go back to a performance before I saved it and "erase" all the edits? I mistakenly overwrote a performance on another one...😫🤦🏻♂️
I don't think so, I don't remember it has been a while since I had this in the lab.
@@SoundsAndGear Nevermind. I got a new one ( I redid all the edits). Thank you the same for your time! 👍🏻
@@gama4773 cool!
i want to update my montage (8) to ver 3.00... but backup the file also my favorites ??
I'm not sure if it does favorites, I think so, but could be wrong. You may want to check with Yamaha first.
awesome
Thanks for watching
Hi friend. I knew that with the new version 3.0 you can only save 128 patterns inside the Montage. If you are someone like me I make more than 128 patterns so I will have to backup every 128 patterns.
Yes, you will have to back them up.
When I go to restore the backup it doesn't restore any of the libraries?
It should restore them all if I remember correctly, all of your user content.
@@SoundsAndGearit just loads the bit that's saved as user as a library and nothing else, only the first live set
@@MatthewWilkinson Been a while since I tried it, not sure
If I have Patterns that I made plus 500 MB of third party libraries, I am assuming I have to back that up in order to load another user file. If I want to go back to my patterns does that mean I have to load 500 MB each time?
If you load a user file it will replace what is already in the user location. You can add specific things from backup like patterns, sounds, etc, but replacing the whole user file will replace everything.
@@SoundsAndGear Thank you. Saving is a tad different from the Motif keyboards. This helps greatly.
Glad to help!
You cannot record more than 128 patterns. You will have to make different backups for each 128. The problem with this is that when you want to recover a specific one, it is impossible to know unless you recover each backup one by one.
@@dannyvazquezg Yep, not very intuitive if you have a bunch of patterns
question. can we load a backup file from montage into MODX?
I think they use the same file system as far as I know
@@SoundsAndGear I found out that MODX only reads Library Files, and/or User Files, NO Backup File from Montage.
Ahhh ok, didn't realize that. Bummer.
is there a way to factory rest the montage?
I'm sure there is but I'm not sure, I no longer have this in the setup so I can't test it out.

Thanks for watching!
what if i dont have back ups? where can i find files?
If you don't have a backup what files are you looking for?
actually, now I am having a different problem.. it is not booting up. stock up on the yamaha logo. i tried resetting but no luck
My Montage shipped with OS v 1.2 - which does not have Backup File as an option
Really? Hmmmm...I don't remember which version mine had but I had that option, not sure what to do in that case. I guess you could backup the libraries or patches directly if you have them?
Robert Mirabelle yeah same here! I can't backup my data and can't update the os. What should I do
Diluk Dilshan I cant do that either like what the fuck?
same thing,here.. Did you find out how to update ?
Did anybody find a way to sort this ? The Backup and Loading Section on p53 of the manual also does not show "Backup File" as an option. The manual says set Content Type to "User File" . Does That work ?
Storage 7.5 GB?? como conseguir ese Almacenamiento ya que son 1.80GB
You may be confusing the amount of waveform data with the user flash storage
@@SoundsAndGear ok thank you
No problem
what's the latest firmware?
Latest OS is 3.0
