  • The F-16 is Not the Best Fighter Jet But... The F-16 jet is cheap and pretty good at everything, the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the first of the US Air Force multi-role fighter aircraft, is the world’s most prolific fighter with more than 2,000 in service with the USAF and approximately 3,000 operational F-16s are in service today in 25 countries, by some estimates, F-16s make up an outsized 16% of the total number of jets flown by militaries around the world, a testament to what is easily the world's most successful, combat-proven multi-role jet fighter ever produced. The fast and agile F-16 Fighting Falcon isn't just one of the top fighters it is also amongst the most cost-effective. While it lacks the range and payload of the larger twin-engine F-15 Eagle, it also costs less than half - which is why the fourth-generation F-16 has been in use since the 1970s and will likely keep flying for many more years to come.

I'm 51. When I was 13 and people asked what I want to be, I told'em I want to fly a USAF F-16. It's the fighter jet of my lifetime. It has the most aesthetic lines I keep drawing it in my passives.
The bubble canopy all the way down to your hips makes it all time best pilot view. My father once asked why I liked it so much. I answered him it is the most agile athletic that can make tightest turns.

The canopy was bolted down and when the chicken struck the canopy it " warped" and literally threw it to the side instead of cracking or shattering ! just a crazy unreal video if you can imagine this but it really happen cuz I witness it

It definitely epitomize the multi-role aircraft title because being fortunate enough to work in the very FIRST operational wing of these aircraft we had so many things to work out such as the 9g turning capability of this aircraft which was unheard of, you would simply blackout without the reclined ejection seat that brought your knees close to your heart and the inflation of the g-suit to keep blood in your head not your feet! Quite amazing and initially very problematic was the fact that since you had a side stick controller NOT a central stick it only took one quarter inch of movement on that side stick to ROLL the aircraft ! yes you read that right... the visibility from the one-piece lexan canopy was another amazing new innovation that made you feel like you were riding ON the front of the aircraft!! It was designed as a pure dogfighter but as we quickly learned it had immense capability as a bombing platform which you saw as the Israelis who trained with us used it to take out the Iraqi nuclear facility and we actually won an international bomb competition with this bird

The spring of that year 81 we had six desert camouflage F-16 Israeli Birds show up since we were the first to work on them they came over to learn with us and practice bombing out over Windover bomb range near the utah-nevada border. They did not know what their assignment was at the time but as it turned out they were working on the bombing proficiency of those aircraft...WHY?? Because even though it was the most Nimble turning dog fighter in the world at that moment, it turned out we had the best bombing platform available also in fact we had won the international bomb competition with them. The Israelis went on to drop 2000 lb to destroy those nuclear our facilities while F15 provided cover. The f-16s used ccip which is continuously computed impact point for precise bombing from such a performance aircraft created tremendous success bombing

The F-16 is highly respected in the world. In my country Venezuela, 14 F-16A are still in service, these are the second line fighter of the Venezuelan Air Force and together with the Sukhoi Su-30Mk2, the most powerful pair in South America.
Here it is known for participating in many incidents, for example, the Crisis of the Corvette Caldas, where the F-16A were ready to face the Mirage 5COA fighters of the Colombian Air Force, they were about to face two of these aircrafts when the last day the corvette was withdrawn.
The second was during the coup d'état in 1992, two F-16 fighters loyal to the government were present in the first air combat in the history of the country and, consequently, shot down two rebel OV-10s with their M61 cannons being the last air-to-air shoot down by cannon so far.
It is undoubtedly an excellent fighter for what it was designed for and will continue to be highly respected in today's world.
    Greetings from Venezuela.

One can argue that being the most widely proliferated (sales & service record) jet fighter in history that is "pretty good at everything" a.k.a. an excellent multi-role fighter that can hold it's own against most any opponent might qualify it as the "best". If you alter the qualifiers--such as effective range or most stealthy--then no, it's not the best.

It would be very tough. The F-16 will have to face the Russians in combat, the fighters they should face are the Sukhoi Su-35S (the king of the Ukrainian skies) and the MiG-31BM (the most feared fighter), both aircraft have been fighting the Ukrainians on many occasions and have achieved air superiority in many areas of the front (Bahkmut for example), incidentally, they are armed with very good missiles such as the R-27, R-77 or the most feared R-37M.
Russian pilots are already combat-hardened and clearly, that experience will be put against the F-16s arriving in Ukraine. It is not the same to face trained pilots, but without combat experience, than to face pilots who are experienced in difficult combat.
Another problem would be the defenses, this is the most restrictive war in terms of air defenses, both sides have AAA systems such as the S-300 or S-400 (for Russia), Buk M1/2/3, S-125 Neva/Pechora and many MANPADS. This is something that makes it difficult to operate in Ukraine, although many experts continue with the premise that the Russians do not achieve air supremacy over the weakened Ukrainians. When you obviate that Russia is not facing a depleted Iraq or a chaotic Libya or an unchecked Syria. Ukraine is very well prepared for this one (hell yes since the 2014 war they have been preparing). So don't doubt that F-16s will take losses against AAA systems.
      Greetings from Venezuela.

@@jesusandresramirezblanco2134 very true ,the fact remains is it there just WON'T BE any engagement or any missions, because there realistically isn't anything(MUCH) for F-16 or any other American aircraft to engage on Ukrainian soil and they certainly are not going to be going into Russia..... there simply is no reason to send a 60 million dollar aircraft into eastern Ukraine to attack a few tanks or AAA ..the risk is very high the reward is minimal that's why it won't happen

The F16 is no doubt a great aircraft, but the F4 has by far the largest number of kills of any combat jet ever put into service (306), though it does have the most losses to arial combat (106) but many of these losses were early in the Viet Nam war, before training was improved and issues with missiles were resolved. You should not fault the aircraft for the shortcomings of the armaments. Once the pilots learned to use the superior speed and power of the F-4, guns where installed, and the AIM-4 issues were resolve the kill ratio climbed dramatically. Also, the Viet Nam war was a long conflict with numerous large air combat engagments, where as these later jets were almsot always flying in conditions where the US had established air superiority and had AWACs to ID the threats. The F14 Tomcat has more kills than the F16 (135 vs 76) though with a slightly higher loss ratio. The F15 has 102 kills with zero losses, but many of these kills were radar missile kills. The F4 radar simply was not as advanced. The Mig 21 has 240 air to air combat wins but over 500 losses to both air and ground fire. For whatever shortcomings the F4 had, in the end, it dropped more ordinance and downed more enemy jets than anything else with an "F" and a jet engine.

Yes because the mig 21 has similar performance, comes down to the pilots in this case , problem with mig is that it's a death trap if not flown by very well trained pilots and it doesn't have a very big range before it has to head back home so it can't fight for very long, it was very impressive for it's era , Russia proper never had the mig 21 in its inventory because they knew of its problems

Keep in mind that those'r still no definitive conclusion whether at that day, the mig21 had really shot downed the falcon or not.
But one of the analysist said ,if that's true, according the data, the falcon was in the middle of withdrawing when the mig21 closing in at full speed. It finally got shotdowned ,because the falcon didn't really got his chance to dogfight nor get out of the mig21's control zone, due its primary mission was to go back to its territory as fast as possible (but w/ the cost of its pilot).
Both jets have similar top speed 2.100+km/h; but the mig21's pilot charging at the falcon ,was already determined to shoot it down at all cost since the very beginning of the engagement. (while at the same time, the said falcon were distracted by adversary's *Flanker*)

I’ve heard U.S. pilots that fly the F-35 asked what jet would you want to fly other than the F-35 what would be their second choice and A LOT of them said the F-16. If the U.S. and allies wouldn’t have been so scared of Putin and his nuclear black mail in the beginning of the war, they could have been training Ukrainian pilots to fly the F-16 and they would be in Ukraine already saving the lives of Ukrainian ground troops.

WOW! Well that's an interesting concept but at Mach 5 you have to go STRAIGHT, you can't turn at all until you slow down a lot! When I was working on the early F-16 at Hill Air Force Base Utah, and SR-71 was flying over Montana and had an electronic problem and needed to land and we were the closest base and at their speed mach3 it still took hundreds of miles to slow down and turn and land! ... meanwhile lasers are a great tool for spotting and identification but we simply don't have a high enough power source in a small enough package to make it viable as a good weapon ,,they can't just put Tesla batteries in them

The F-35 is the faster and more agile fighter dude. Have you lived under a rock the last few years? That mock dogfight was literally a prototype F-35 with heavy Flight control software restrictions and they had that dogfight to find the G limits the F-35 had. The only issue was they couldn't, so they just set it at 10g. It's the only fighter in the world other than the F-22 that requires a G-suit because of its insane maneuverability. At the time of the dogfight the F-35 was limited to 6g. After that fight it changed, then the actual combat coded F-35As went on to score a 20-1 win loss ratio at operation red flag against F-16s, F-18s, F-15s, Typhoons, Mirages, and Gripen Es in dogfighting alone. In BVR the F-35 was uncontested with a 178-0 win loss which is the current record. The F-22 is the only Nato fighter that hasn't participated
