    How would you solve the problems created by rake tapping? What changes to the PP system or game would you make?
    Also, it's been pointed out that there are some notable 4-key players. Koifishu has had one of them (120-cell) appear on a recent video of his, check it out if you're curious!

      I think that asking for 4 inputs is really unfair (and that's coming from a guy who sucks at speed and has a literally 3$ office kb so I don't abuse my setup either)... Yes, money = speed with some peripherals so it's unfair cause not everyone has access but asking for 4 key inputs for physical inability is like asking Ar11 to be completely removed since some players have slower reaction time in genetics or like asking for some slight aim assist cause some people may not have precision or fast movements in the genetics. I think we just have to deal with it, or just wait for PP improvements and reworks so all skillsets are equally rewarding... That's MY opinion at least...

      I don't really think there are problems created by rake tapping. There are like two players who do it to a high level, and because of the low acc they get they're not exactly gaining extreme amounts of pp from it (even if they do get some cheese pp). It kinda feels like your argument is basically "speed meta is bad because speed is hard," as if being a top player in the game is supposed to be easy.

    • @Marquipuchi
      @Marquipuchi 9 месяцев назад +2

      nothing can be done because any nerfs to raw speed (further than it already has been shafted in the past several reworks) will make it literally impossible for any player to gain pp without so much flow aim or accuracy.

      Rake tapping isn't a problem if it doesn't make pp easy. I don't think osu has a speed problem. People have just pushed their speed to the absolute limit, and it's super impressive. I hate hate when shit on others for doing it.

      Pp relies only on the final score of the play, namely number of 300s, 100s, 50s and misses, as well as combo, because every score must be possible to replicate using the same values in a calculator, and that can't work with n. of exceeding inputs

      At least for people who randomly tap when there's a pause in the song (both the in-game map pause/Pass check feature or just a silent pause in the song itself) or right before the song starts like me
      People do random inputs to keep their minds active during "downtime" this is true for literally every game and some people do it out of habit/impulse instead of a conscious effort to keep their minds active
      It's also why I'm not a fan of mania detecting all inputs that aren't hitting a note as misses. you simply can't do that little habit without ruining your score (even though I don't play mania or at least not often)

  • @WillyOsu
    @WillyOsu 8 месяцев назад +97

    "Speed" is not overweighted. Speed is actually underweighted, but the issue is that flow aim maps are what is giving too much pp when people add DT. How come most of the "speed" maps like Lionheart, Glory Days, Dragonstar, etc. are only around 255-270 bpm? We have people pushing 300-330 or above with plays now, and some of them with slight flow aim components, like rog-unlimitation, are able to capitalize on this, but buy and large actual speedy maps are still underrepresented.
    I think the premise of "the meta is speed, just look at the top players" is flawed because you're not taking into account the aiming ability needed either. Sure a lot of the top 10 have good "speed", but to say that their aiming ability isn't also amazing is very disingenuous. It's not the "speed" alone that makes them top 10, they are good at multiple skillsets which is why they are ranked so high. I don't think it's fair to say that mrekk, lifeline, and akolibed especially, but even players like chicony, zoomer, and shimon are just "speed" players when they have such a high aiming ability as well.
    Raketapping will be figured out soon enough, and honestly the solution is probably just to nerf low accuracy harder. I don't think anyone has said that "faster is better" so I'm not sure where you're getting this from. Usually it comes down to the players that have good speed AND finger control, like aricin and aetrna, that are considered better than people who may technically tap faster, but less accurately.
    The solution probably looks something like this: find a way to nerf flow aim stream patterns, fix the amount of length bonus given to a map, change up how repeating patterns give higher strain in pp, slightly buff higher bpm tapping and aim.

      If speed is not overweighted then how come Yomi Yori, which is also a long flowaim and aim map, only gives 1k? `The only difference is that its 220 bpm. I think the top plays should be a mix of all kinds of maps. Long stream stamina flowaim maps, short crossmap jump aim maps and also all kinds of speed maps but when every top play includes speed it has to be overweighted. Thats just my opinion though.

      @@francoconzett4823 its because its nomod, they said that it was specifically DT flow aim that is overweighted. Also in the whole picture yomi yori is only 220bpm compared to 270-300 of the DT flow aim maps like Glory days DT, and yomi yori's aim is not all that hard as it is somewhat slower in jumps.
      Imo depending on how you look at it nomod is either underweighted, or where the standard should be.
      The problem is that a map like the forsaken, (215bpm deathstream map with like 5k max combo) is worth 1,030pp for SS, which is not normally. Obviously if you add DT to it, it becomes 4,614pp for SS which is nuts as it would make DT somewhat more than a 4x multiplier.

    1. Ultimately, genetics will play a significant factor in literally any skill in any game. To specifically avoid this is a fruitless exercise.
    2. It SHOULD be the fact that most players in the top 10 are capable of tapping faster than everyone else. Lack of a particular skill should be rare if you are at the top.
    3. If you aren't tapping speed maps with any accuracy, the pp you get from that score is already nerfed into the ground, and you still need enough control over your technique to combo through buzz sliders for example.
    4. There's a reason only Laissez faire can get pp from this rather than an entire raketapping epidemic happening. Just because you can tap at 1k+ bpm in a tapping speed sandbox doesn't mean it's applicable to the game. Also come on, he's 4 digit, not a top 100 player. Yes, he might be able to top a leaderboard or two, but I think that's deserved if he can harness that technique well enough to maintain combo
    As a side note: 120-cell and some others have a group that is dedicated to 4K tapping in std. He even has a 4K guide in his bio

    You mentioned ADOFAI as a solution(kinda) to speed problem, but in adofai, multiple keys themselves are main controversies nowadays.
    In current adofai high level scene(in21.1↑), using 16key is mainstream, and similar to raketapping, people are complaining that is it even a rhythm game at this point.
    Skill ceiling of rhythm games are high, really high. I don’t really see a way to evaluate it correctly.

      @flyinosu  9 месяцев назад +19

      I actually didn't know about ADOFAI's issues rn, that's interesting!
      And yeah, ranking systems and rhythm games will always inherently have issues. It sucks, either design a game that limits the player in some way (2 keys) or let the skill ceiling become incomprehensibly high.

  • @CptShrimps
    @CptShrimps 9 месяцев назад +19

    The genetic factor doesn't apply only to physical aspects like tapping speed, but to mental aspects as well. Once we're talking about the top 0.001% like you say, some people are just going to be able to process visual input faster than others despite equal training and effort, and some people are just going to be able to keep time better and thus tap with higher accuracy than others. This extends to literally any ability that can possibly be influenced by genetics, which just ends up being literally every ability. People don't like to admit it, especially those who put a lot of effort into becoming one of the top achievers in something, but the fact is that if you took someone else and they put an equal amount of effort and did an equal amount of training, their results would differ from yours. The argument of "just train even harder/spend more time" doesn't hold up at the top level because 1. people have a finite amount of time each day, so people who improve slower can't reach as high of a peak before their improvement can no longer outpace age-related deterioration and 2. some barriers simply cannot be overcome with training and effort. A 5 ft tall person will never win The World's Strongest Man, and no matter how much some people don't want to admit it, someone with above 200ms visual reaction time will never be the world's best fps aimer.

Either we just give up the "insaneness" of high star passes because they become much more easier and nerf speed much more even if possibly unfair to "legitimate" speed scores or the way inputs in osu work gets reworked, which is barely possible though due to technical complications (you can't re-evaluate all scores from the past)

    From a mania players perspective, no, this isnt a problem. If a player can do something at 260bpm, they can do it at 230bpm. I know its weird when "just be faster" is the meta, but this is basically the meta in every single rhythm game to exist, including all the other modes besides standard. in fact much more so than in standard. you could almost argue that the only reason one mania player is 2 digit and the other is 4 digit is because the 2 digit can literally just tap faster, despite them having the same reading and accuracy skills.
    In fact, from personal experience in mania, I would argue that anyone who thinks that genes arent important, is delusional. Many players will improve at a similar pace, only to then later get stuck while others keep getting better and suddenly turn to 1 or 2 digits despite not putting in more effort than the other players. The truth: these people were simply able to tap faster even before they got into osu. these players often have no better reading or accuracy than many 4 digits. there is little reason to assume that this isnt true for standard.
    However, there literally was a top player, that rage quitted and complained about the community becoming too fast because he was stuck at his already pretty high speed for multiple years, while suddenly noobs pop up out of nowhere and destroy his scores, so its not like people arent mad about it over there. its just something people have gotten to accept over time.

    I personally quite disagree with some of the things said in that video. First, genetics do and will always matter, much like in any sport or activity, your performance graph is a combination of your body's limits and your training rate/methods. Removing the "speed" is not a solution, as it took thousands of hours to every player to build muscle memory, develop techniques and learn how the game works, no matter the genetics (those heling to improve faster but not stopping you to improve until a certain point). As much as people like lokikaos/laissez faire got 700-1k pp scores from using such "vibro" techniques, it's not somethings that is out of the bounds, as many player got better scores in a "legit" as most players would call it, way. This video is not about nerfing the speed meta or speed as a skillset, but to completely remove it in a way. While I agree that a mod allowing for more inputs would be fun in Lazer, speed (on high acc plays) is a skill, on a lower skill level, streaming 190 is not that hard to learn, but hitting consistent 99% on 190bpm stream maps is a whole another story, much like it is between bursting 270 and acc-ing 250bpm deathstreams. Speed could be nerfed, but removing such a part of the game is pretty much like being able to choose your approach are on any map. Even though playing such a game requires both mental and physical abilities, those are required into any game, to compare, it would be the same as allowing macros for a game such as Starcraft, a game that requires a lot of APMs. A more reasonable approach to this speed issue would be to value more click control at high speed, and nerf a bit deathstreams that do not require an extremely high level of aim. Also note that the pp system will never be representative of the actual skill of the player, as one may be able to retry the same map thousands of times to get a 1000pp score (whether it was "cheesed" or not), but can still end up performing not as good as the more "generalists" players in a tournament.
    edit : forgot text

    • @toe3267
      @toe3267 9 месяцев назад +3

      I don't agree with the last part, just because you took 1K retry to do a 1K shouldn't be seen as bad because you can say that for every skill and every score in the game, like it or not pp system is the only objective metric when you compare 2 players, because there's an undeniable number metric, yes someone could be better than someone with better rank but being better rank is an argument the other don't have, in any competitive game you are at the rank you deserve.

    Interesting video. Good work. I liked the points you made. They were put together well. However, I don't think your recommended change of 3 keys instead of 2, is a good solution. As a player who quit when they were 13k, and specialized in tech, the difference between inputs would be massive. Maps would become so much more easier, due to the increase in stamina. It would ruin the difficulty, and novelty of impressive scores in the streaming and finger control skill sets. The reason why using mouse buttons is generally accepted by the community, is due to added difficulty to aiming. While it does add speed, the trade off is immense. If a 3 key were to be added, there has to be something to make it more difficult. Otherwise, like touch screen, add a score modifier to make it fair.

My main game is arcade Taiko no Tatsujin and in that, high level players often roll fast notes, where they control the vibration of the stick to hit multiple notes faster than anyone could swing. This isn't looked down upon to my knowledge and is in fact extremely standard for high level play (it takes a LOT of skill to make sure you roll the correct number of notes with good timing). I think it's a matter of perspective.

    3 Key Tapping with the current development of rapid trigger getting more and more accessible would be fatal for osu with no doubt. Putting the time and skill u have to invest to have an technique for 3 key alternating aside, if that option were inplemented, people will easily develop techniques for this, seeing how dedicated the community and his player can be.

  • @Stanky_Foot

    The only other solution I can think of is to buff the pp of other types of maps (yes, including jump aim). The competition with a pp system that prioritizes aim (or at least weighs it as much as speed) is a much more fair competition.
    There isnt much physical limitation to aiming as it is 95% a mental skill, and the physical aspect of aiming cannot be cheesed to the degree with which speed can.

    As for the "multiple inputs" i want to say that it is not entirely true what you say, only K1 - M1 and K2 - M2 cancels out the input, there is the Tap+X style where you alternate between K2 and M1 so the inputs don't cancels out (and with that style you can go really fast)

    I played osu a few years ago, I was never very good but I remember hearing that I should just play more to get more endurance in my hands. And all it gave me was carpal tunnel in my left hand and quit playing. That was probably a combination of the position of my wrist on the corner of my desk, and continuing to play even when my hands were going numb, but I just assumed the no pain no gain mindset from working out. Which shouldn't be given to nerve related injuries lol. I'm better now for the most part, just wanted to point that out there that to new players to be careful for their hands

    Something I really want to know but I can't because I'm busy is how good I'm in osu! (speed to be exact). Because when I first started osu! I wasn't able to even stream 150BPM but in like 1 year I was able to stream to 220BPM and after a bit of focusing on speed I reached 270BPM In like 2 months or so
    But my problem was stamina. I can hold 270BPM maps for like 30 seconds ,and 220BPM maps for like 4 Minutes. and for bursts I was able to burst 370BPM. Hopefully when I finish High-school I'll try to see how fast I can stream and how well is my stamina.

  • @EdgarEk
    @EdgarEk 8 месяцев назад +1

    I would like to compare this to high BPM drumming as it's pretty similar in terms of using technique to achieve the same thing (hitting drums). Let's say you have two bass drums with one pedal each and you would like to play 300 BPM, you would have to be as fast with your legs as your fingers would be in Osu!, which means "tapping" 150 BPM with each leg. To get around this physical limitation that a lot of drummers are facing, some drummers plays with a different technique (heel toe technique) that allows them to hit the bass drum two times with with each leg and alternate between them.
    This doesn't make them a worse drummer (if they still can keep the rythm) and they can play faster.
    I think that finding new technique shouldn't be punished, but they should achieve the same accuracy as the "regular" techniques to get the same PP, It's a rythm game after all and also a sport. New and different techniques should be encouraged and that's also why we see so many tablets in Osu!, because they give a lot of people a chance to play at a level they would be able to with a mouse.

  • @lospierdol

    You mentioning 4 key alt made me laugh cause I havent heard anyone ever talk about this and Im sometimes playing it fun from time to time on like 5/6* maps. (mostly jumps)
    From my experience it is really really hard to learn super fast 4 key alt (200 is already hard to do) as its probably the hardest tap pattern to wrap you brain arround with 4 inputs + there's the fact that pressing mouse buttons increases the drag on the mouse which can be really annoying to deal with
    edit: oops, didnt see his graphic when he talked on full alt because of what I was refering to alt I was playing which is mouse keyboard mouse keyboard 💀 though some things I said still apply with bpm fast enough

    • @lospierdol
      @lospierdol 8 месяцев назад

      need to add one more thing, in the video I've changed the bindings so that keyboard is left input and mouse is right, that's because sometimes you will end up holding keyboard input for too long and the next mouse input wont register (as in for example left Mouse right Keyboard right Mouse)

  • @MMenyan
    @MMenyan 23 дня назад

    there have actually been several top players who play 3k (tablet) and one who plays 4k (kb+mouse) but none are full alt and most of the time they only use 2 keys at once.
    4k and 3k full alt do exist but are very rare and i personally only know one 5 digit who does 4k full alt.
    i think this is mostly because the vast majority of new players neither hear about nor come up with those playstyles on their own (similar to 2k full alt or ring+index, but more extreme) and indeed partly because they are a bit harder than 2k at first.
    however, imo once you get used to them, they might only be a bit worse in terms of acc than any 2k playstyle
    of course, if you already have over 1k hours in a different tapping style then trying to change to any other style would be much more difficult as you fight your muscle memory, and take even more patience since youd feel set back. it is still possible but to give it a proper go takes lots of time and effort that honestly isnt worth it most of the time.

    now that akolibed has been crushing speed maps this topic is even more relevant. The new top play is insane don't get me wrong, but 1700 PP is definitely overweighted. Unlimited inputs would definitely be cool as a mod or something in lazer, but I'd hate to see a bunch of less skilled players overtake the history of speed in the game just because they can now use 4 fingers to play.
