So Gus was bad long before he met Max and after he was murdered by Hector, Gus’s dark side came flooding right back without Max to control his instability.

Like all things, it's contextual. If something is important to the unfolding story, you generally want to show it, not just handwave it off screen. There are exceptions, but that's a good guideline. A moment like this, however, is less about the story, and more about how Gus is remembering and retelling it. The tree, the shack, the Coatli... None of it matters to the story of the episode. What matters is how Gus is admitting - confessing - by parable how he has chosen to destroy the cartel.
To think that this is the only back story we have about Gus in the entire show. Everyone of us was so immersed in his story the first time we heard this.
We don't really know if the story is true, or gus is basically fabricating it to show how he would treat Hector afterwards. The genius of Gus's character is how dark and secretive he is. So it might be a way to show how sinister he can be.
While they didn’t show it here, the last shot of this scene is a focus on Hector’s right hand…. I think we all know what that means for Mr. Fring…. Damn brilliant.
I rewatched this show with my mom, she hadn’t seen breaking bad before. She thought Gus was actually a good person, prior to this scene. Was quite funny to me
"I know you will be back Hector... because i watched Breaking Bad."
😂😂
How sweet of Gus to tell Hector a bedtime story.
“A crippled little Coati. What kind of mammal steals from a Lucuma tree? No mammal... no mammal at all.“
“Last chance to look at me Coati.”

Max sounds like a really good friend.

This scene is a true window into Gus' soul.

Gus did destroy everything that hector could care about
Until Gus was killed at the hands of Walter White along with Hector who had the bell to help him bring Gus down with him.
Show don't Tell tends to be the rule, but Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul know exactly when to break it.

@@watchm4kerSimilarly to the "no more half measures" and "I broke my boy" monologues from Mike
The characterisation through subtext is what makes it good, even though it's a monologue.
This is the exact moment Giancarlo should’ve won an Emmy

What I liked about this scene was how it pretty much told us that Gus was sadistic BEFORE the Salamancas wronged him
This is the moment Gus Shares A Story With Hector
Good comfort words from Gus Los pollos hermanos standards.
Gus waiting for his friend to wake up and be able to give him a consentual hug. What a caring an thoughtful man. 🫂

How could Gus tell a horrible story to such a poor old man with a stroke???

The writing is superb. Some of the best storytelling. 👏🏻

There are no “Coatis” in Chile lol. Unless Fring lived in the Juan Fernández Islands which I highly doubt lol.
Probably the whole chile thing is a decoy.
Even Hank found no record of Gus' existence prior to Pinochet

Lucuma is sweet but I'm not a fan of the texture. They're better fresh but they're not grown commercially in the states.
Hector would rather die in his sleep.
As someone from Chile this is complete bullshit. There aren't lucuma trees growing randomly on the street, and there is not a single coatí on chile
