I have an adult male Labrador and this handles all of his waste from the back yard. I add septic tank treatment to promote decomposition. Egg shells, coffee grounds, some leaves and dirt. Important to add water often to keep it moist and hot. Place in a spot where it gets good direct sunlight as the composter will become hot and decomposition will occur quicker.
Joan Lange I actually installed it 2 months ago and it’s not even 1/4 of the way full. It’s been working like a charm it breaks down quickly . great video. we have 2 labs and an Airedale and we have to do something about the waste. Garbage pickup is now every two weeks so it is really no longer an option, especially with summer months approaching.
Also please use COMPOSTABLE bags NOT biodegradable ones. Biodegradable bags need special treatment to decompose, similar to coffee cups. Compostable bags however will fully degrade/rot/ compost without any intervention.
Ok, so I have 3 big dogs. They produce LOTS of waste. Does/would bucket get filled up where it won't take anymore? If so, what then? I'd have to scoop all that stuff out?😯 How fast does let's say 10lbs every other week going in bin? Where does it go? Just seems it would stay there. Perhaps if I put it in every other day instead of once /2 weeks. Thanks
+Bllie hunt It should break down on it's own, but depending on how much you're adding, you would want to use a septic starter to help break down the waste faster.
Hi Cathy, Great video. How many digester's would you say I would need to digest 50 dog kennels daily? I would like to try this out for an SPCA here in South Africa. Thx.
Shane Fox You would need about 18 of these. Less if you can get bigger containers. Ensure they are kept away from areas that food is grown, or drinking water is sourced. Don't use the 'manure' for growing food, using for flowers/trees is ok. Do not smoke around the area with many units. Make money out of your shit farm
I don't understand if the pathogens might reach a veggie garden then isn't it possible that it can leach out into the water table? I have 7 dogs, not sure if this would work...plus the pathogen issue? Any help?
microbes usually do not go that far. soil and water tables have a great natural way of filtering water riding it if toxins and microbes. and doing this will not create a major problem. as for the seven dogs, i would suggest creating more than one place to dump their waste if they are large. if they are small then one should be fine if you use the septic starter.
+Laura Legato I can't think of a temp version, or a way to remove it. Removing would be very messy. You would probably be better to just bury it if needed.
my problem is that the soil drains out water REALLY fast in my yard...my current doogie dooley won't hold water for more than a day, so it's not working well. I wonder if I should try this and not cut the bottom out or just cut a smaller part of the bottom out.
I've heard you can use that stuff to get the composting process started, but yeah ultimately you won't be using the material in this composter so generally its better to throw that stuff in your normal compost.
how about picking the poop up with a glove and putting the waste in a brown paper bag, would that help the digester with degradation? Are you going to use the poop as compost?
For communal use we need a heavy machinery that can dig the hole leave the designed container and pick it back up and leave it. Solutions...one less thing to worry about.
I made one of these out of 5 gallon buckets stacked on top each other. It didnt work. I then added water, and LOTS of septic enzyme. I now have 10 gallons of dog poo stew that wont go away. UGH!!

What about plants Can it be placed near plants trees ( Japanese maples)?
I don't doubt this is an effective method for many, but I would like to warn this may be dependent on climate. I live in Ireland, less sunshine, more rain and wet earth. I followed these instructions about 4 months ago. It hasn't worked at all. I now have a hole full of poop that's going nowhere fast.
Jeremy Walker, yeah I have clay about 3-4ft down and I've found this method didn't work for me either. Digging a hole, using it until it is full, covering it and moving to a new spot works for me. Couple years and it is gone and you can reuse the spot. I have the unused area for it though. Also rainy cooler climate, but even summer it was a no go. I even added some stones to the bottom to hopefully allow some liquified portion to drain down. Also tried one more septic tank style where the bottom isn't cut out so it can digest and liquify, and much more drainage from the rest of the bucket. That worked the best, but probably because I could hit it with a jet of water from the hose and liquify it even more. Might have just needed to add in something like peatmoss or even just soil or grass clippings to prevent it from just turning into a block of poo. At least with the hole it is easy to pull out.

this looks like a good way to deal with animal waste.. my one thought is how safe it is if you have young children in the yard .. I think it is easy for them to lift off the top and fall in head first . I would like to see a way to make it child proof . Having it in a child proof fenced area would be one idea .
If you bury it you won't be able to remove the compost as it will be at the bottom. I think the first question you need to answer is: how often do your kids fall into your other wheelie bins? If they haven't ever managed this, then there's a pretty good chance they won't take a nose dive into a bin filled with dog poo. If they do manage to get into your wheelie bins on a fairy regular basis, and standard discipline and warnings won't work, then either put the bin somewhere the kids can't get at it or pop-rivet some sort of latch which is too stiff for little fingers onto the lid.
Charlotte's Web : my "kid" is 36 years old and I don' t have a dog or a need for this but I was thinking of others . Unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world and thousands of kids die each year from avoidable accidents so even to save one life is good enough reason to make it child proof .

@@blazellanos7310 😆 Well said. Not sure what happened to "letting kids learn their own lessons". Apparently now they are incapable of doing anything on their own.
A few things not quite right here. Firstly, those are not air-holes. No air will get in them that far below the soil. They are there primarily to let out excess fluid. Secondly, this is not the best idea if you have high ground water level. In my area in Ireland, there is a layer of clay only 3ft below the surface which holds water above it (and it rains a lot here!). In this case there is a higher risk of pathogens leaking out and being carried off by the water which might pollute nearby drinking wells and streams. Thirdly, this method is anaerobic composting which is very slow and very smelly. However, any water in the bin will keep the smells below the surface, but the lid is mandatory! Finally, it is not correct that you cannot use the composted remains in the garden. But because the method is slow, the bucket needs to remain undisturbed (i.e. no fresh poop!) for a long time. 2 years is usually the recommended time.
Bagging it seems pointless. Just use a poop scooper, a dedicated garden trowel or a piece of cardboard or even a small dustpan with a spatula. A can and a stick even works when nothing else is handy. Personally i dont need to fondle my dogs crap with my hand. Ew
