Dog and cat waste is pretty toxic in terms of pathogens. Getting the compost to a high enough temperature to kill those toxins is pretty important. Seems like NYC program is doing that. Thanks for sharing.
I’m sorry but I’ve never ever understood or will ever when cryabies/people getting so infuriated about this.Your taking your dog on a walk outdoors, and unless the dog decides to drop one on a walkway or something, I don’t see why it’s totally necessary to pick it up.Go ahead and calms me,but why waste a plastic bag on something that just going to act as fertilizer anyways.Just my .2
Search for videos on DIY dog waste digesters. I put 2 in my backyard last fall. The waste breaks down underground. No more sending dog poo to the landfill. :)
@@firerose7936 I watched pretty much all the videos and combined their suggestions with a tip I read in an article -- wrap the can in sediment filter (I found it at Lowes. It's for use in French drains and keeps dirt from creeping into your cans) I went with two 20-gallon Brute trash cans and I'm wishing I had gone a size bigger cuz they can't keep up with two 60-pound dogs so I'll be adding a third can. I've started using Doggie Waste Digester (Amazon) in one and Ridx (Walmart) in the other to see which one works faster but it's too early to tell just yet.
So glad to see this video and know the efforts of Battery Park City Authority, and Ryan Torres, are appreciated. This is a wonderful pilot project we can all learn from, and implement.
I think about doing this for the cat waste. We use the biodegradable litter, but it goes to a landfill in plastic bags. We compost kitchen scraps and leaves for the veg garden, but I wouldn't want to use the cat waste there. I've thought about putting it somewhere in a big wooded area in the backyard, but I worry about any toxins that might get released to the wildlife in the area if they dug it up and/or ate it. Anyone have any ideas?
Great video! Please do an episode on nuclear energy! France powers 75% of its power grid with nuclear energy and all of the waste they have produced from it fits into a football stadium (which is very small for a country of 67 million). The US has a bunch of nuclear waste sitting around in places like Yucca Mountain. It is a great 20-40 year solution to climate change to be used in unison with other sources of renewable energy like wind, solar, tidal/hydro, waste-to-energy, etc.
not gross subject at all.... : why no use of worms (vermiculture)? the tailings from worms is nutrient rich : can a simple grinder be made using electric drill & paint mixer attachment? wouldn't this allow use of compost bags as it is mechanically broken down? : loose stools cannot be picked up w/paper

@@codycow2637 Because you're polluting and smelling up the streets just leaving it there, and on grass it can kill the grass not turn into fertilizer. You'd have to bury it, which means digging up the grass. But I'm sure just burying in just regular compost is okay, but just as this lady said not compost for food. It can be toxic. Allegedly dogs and cats are created hybrids so it's why their poo is not good natural fertilizer and considered detrimental leaving it in surface.
I tweeted Elon Musk the other day and told him if he wants to build something on Mars he should build a landfill. Somewhere where we can send all our plastics, nuclear waste and any other foul toxic garbage. But not the dog poo, we'll keep the dog poo and grow some groceries
@Precious Erving-Frimpong why is that dumb? Are you hoping to go live on Mars? Where there is no ocean? No trees? How does he plan to provide water? Can't take ours!

Simple: attract something called Black Soldier Flies to take care of it.
So is baby poo

That's what I'm working on!!! Any good source tips?

Thank you so much for addressing this!

This is so cool. I hope more people start to talk about dealing with waste more openly.
How about cat-waste with a little kitty litter mixed in? and is there a residential sized plan for tis method?
No. At least not if you're growing food. Ok for tree and shrub compost.
Please come to Europe! Here the topic is not so proplematic :D
I have a waste digester too. I would love a natural chemical that could speed up the breakdown process.
Maybe even something that you can sprinkle on a fresh delivery that will break straight to your lawn. ☺️
Septic starter sold in hardware stores helps with break down.
I think there was a jack black movie about this😂 vapoorize was the fictional product name.

My vet said that if your dog is pooping more than once a day, your feeding it too much.

great initiative, thank you!`
couldn't you burn the methane n produce electricity?
I thought dog waste wasn’t to be used in food compost
So why isn’t dog waste composted with the rest of yard waste that is composted industrially by cities?!?
Potential pathogen content I would imagine.

So our best option is to use resources to send our trash to space and destroy another planet?
