Musa velutina is native to India and other parts of Southeast Asia.
Location:
Musa velutina grows in tropical to subtropical climes, but is one of the more cold tolerant. Musa velutina is hardly to -6 C (20 F). Temperatures of 0 C (32 F) will kill the foliage. But it will grow back when the temperature warms up.
Height:
Unlike most banana plants, Musa velutina is a small plants that rarely reach more than 2,1 meter (7 feet) tall, depending on growing conditions.
Flowers:
Musa velutina flowers at a young age, doing so within a year. It has a pink to purplish flower bracts framing white to yellow flower clusters all rising from the center of the plant on stalks in late summer. Each stalk is soon home to a clusters of small, pink bananas.
Fruits:
The bananas are 3 in (8 cm) long, pink, and fuzzy. The banana is self peeling back when it is ripe. It has a soft, sweet flesh that can be eaten but is extremely seedy.
Leaves:
Musa velutina has classically shaped banana leaves up to 1 meter (3,3 feet) long in a deep shade of green with bronze undersides.
