What a great exercise! Thanks for sharing! 5 pens for life is hard haha 😅
👍
Great video. Great selection. Great pens. Enjoy your testing of ink and of nibs. Where we differ is in that all of your pens have screw on caps, Many of my best writers have screw on caps, but all of my favorites are either slip on or snap on caps.
That Just Turnings looks wonderful. Nice!
Thanks for this video.
I do love my Just Turningd pens, it was difficult to pick between them.
Jinhao X850 with an EF nib.
Jinhao 82 mini F.nib
Jinhao 80 with the fine nib
Pilot Kakuno with a B stub nib
Hero 395 pen with Flexi nib
I've not yet tried the Hero pen, but do enjoy the others.
I agree, monochrome pens work well with all inks. For my 5, easy nib swaps & durable materials in the body round out the criteria: Lamy Vista, Lamy Studio, TSWBI AL 580 Black, Pilot Vanishing Point, Monteverde Regatta Carbon.
It is nice being able to easily swap nibs, opens up yeat another world of customisations.
Great video, Garry. Love the recommendations. I totally agree on the Just Turnings and the Pilot. Would both be contenders for me too. I also love how your Sport looks with that dark red ink sloshing around.
Thanks. It was a bit of an experiment with the Sport but I'm glad I did it, I love watching the ink flow in the transparent and translucent pens.
5:13 ...that is a cool tip with the Kaweco becoming a dropper pen....nice
Silicone grease vs silicone lubricants ?
Specialised lubricants are produced from fluorinated silicones. If you need a lubricant that won't damage plastic and rubber parts, it's better to go for a silicone lubricant. You can usually find it in two different forms: silicone grease and silicone spray.
24:16...My first pick would be the
1) Pilot Kakuno / Med & fine
2) Kaweco / med
3) Hongdian M2
4) Asvine V128 /ef
5) Safari Vista demonstrator
Thanks.
I got my silicone as part of a repair it, I think it was from Goulet Pens.
That's a nice selection of pens, with a good selection of different nibs.
@@GarryEves I looked around, and found a larger quantity of lubricant (1 oz) at the hardware store, under the name of (plumbers/technical parts) "clear lubricant grease" for $10 cad.
It's the exact same product as the Goulet Pen brand...
Goulet pens 1/8 oz of lubricant grease costs us canadians $15 (shipping and taxes)
This was a fun exercise! My 5 would be:
1) Pelikan M205
2) Sailor Pro Gear
3) BENU Talisman
4) Pilot Kakuno
5) TWSBI Eco T
4 and 5 are the workhorse pens, and depend on my mood. Other options may be a LAMY Al-Star and Kaweco Sport. Realized I didn't include any fine nibs in the above!
I enjoy all the versions of those pens that I have, although mine do tend towards the B nibs.
It's surprising how much fun you can have without spending a small fortune on pens.
I have a 30 year old Safari, does that count?
Add a Sheaffer Intensity
And a Kaweco Student
And Laban Solar.
I'm just wondering, how similar is the 30-year-old pen to the modern versions? Have they made any changes to the design over the years?
I don't use my Laban often enough, its a surprising wet writer.
I love my Shaeffer pens, I really wonder why they are so underrated!! Hardly anyone ever mentions them, but they are affordable and so much better than the cheap Chinese or middle priced waterman or Lamys etc.!!!
I also love my Shaefffers more than the cheap Japanese ones!!!
@@GarryEves same thing, with a new left hand nib and the cp fell apart - 30 years is lifetime to some people.
Nice video, thanks. I've a couple of Inoxcrom 77 slim ( inexpensive, made in the 80s) that write like the pilot you showed. Those are my perfect ones, i used them from years.
I've just had a quick good, that Inoxcrom looks like a nice-looking pen.
I really do need to try out some vintage pens.
My five pens:
1. Pilot Prera
2. Moonman 800
3. Platinum Procyon
4. Lamy Safari
5. Faber Castell Grip
Yea, all inexpensive, but great writers. Addixionally one bottle of ink to take: Teranishi Melancholic Blue.
That's a nice list. I do enjoy my inexpensive pens.
Faber Castell makes some amazing pens. Their steel nibs rival even the famous gold nibs. My E-motion stealth is a better writer than my Lamy 2000. More comfortable section, much smaller sweet spot. Nearly as smooth.
@@zveryok1 I have this on my "to=buy" list for when exchange rates settle down a bit.
As I don't have too wide choice yet, I'd prefer my traditional Lamy Safari (or Al-Star), Online Vision Classic, TWSBI Diamond, Pilot Elite 95s, Waterman Carene. I will also have a perfect Montblanc 149 sometime, for sure. Those are my preferences for the moment, but they always change, haha. I have a couple of vintage pens, but they are collectible stuff, not for every day use.
I've got an Online pen that I need to spend more time with. I bought it from a local stationary store a couple of years ago.
I'm with you about the selection changing quite often, I would think I'd be using a slightly different selection if I were to record this today.
Every time I try to think of a top five I come up with a different combination. The only constant was that Pilots were always a dominant presence. So when I change the question to, which 5 Pilots would I have for life, it becomes easy:
Pilot Custom Urushi
Pilot 823
Pilot Vanishing Point
Pilot metal Falcon
Pilot E95s
Five absolutely brilliant pens that can all reasonably be argued to be among the best in class, covering such a wide gamut of the fp experience. I can’t think of any other brand that can cover so many bases so well.
Pilot do make some exceedingly good pens. I've not been disappointed with any that I have bought.
Did you ever get into the vintage Pilot Myu from circa 1970s?
I haven't yet gone into the vintage pen ho;e - I can see it coming eventually! Where I live there are very few sources for vintage pens other than eBay.
Workhorse: Lamy Al-Star
Workhorse: Nahvalur Schuylkill
Workhorse (travel): Kaweco Sport
Mid-tier: Pilot Custom Heritage 912
Luxury: Pilot Custom 823
If allowable I'd also keep a couple spare nibs for each of the workhorses
So excellent pens on thee. I like the idea of the varying nib sizes as well.
Reasonable choices! Thanks! I carried my choices downstairs with us as my wife and I sought shelter in a tornado warning. Ultimately unnecissarily, but, can't be too careful.
👍
I liked your choices , they are reasonable nit swayed by Brand names but shier personal preferences and practical functionality.
👍
Just wondering. Noted how you kept the piston cap unscrewed on the 823 but not on the Homo Sapien. Is there a reason for that?
The 823 has a seal at the bottom of the piston which seals the body from the section when screwed down. This helps when travelling so the worst that can happen is you lose the ink from the section into the cap.
The Homo Sapiens is a single reservoir pen, so it doesn't have a seal at the bottom of the vacuum piston. I believe some other Homo Sapiens may have a double reservoir.
Ill join the others.
1) Sailor Pro Fit 21k gold nib in medium. Exceptional, bouncy nib with a western fine or even an extra fine line. Tiny bit of feedback helps control my writing. I feel like pens that are too smooth are harder to use.
2) Sailor Pro Fit Light in B.
3) Faber Castell Emotion Stealth in M.
4) Lamy 2000 in Extra fine.
5) Platinum 3776 in M.
A nice list. I do need to invest in some more Sailor pens.
TWSBI Eco. I got a few of them to use as daily beaters and discovered that they perform better than my “plush” pens. I don’t want to be a fanboy but if I had to pick a pen to save my life, it’d be one of those Ecco’s. I must say the Kaweco sport is indeed a great little cheapo pen too. Smooth as better.
I do like my Ecos. It's a shame they are increasing in price so much though.
My answer is simple: Five Pelikan m800.
👍
Diplomat Aero
Penlux Emperor Elite
TWSBI ECO
Lamy Safari
Jinhao x159
👍
😎👍🏼
👍
I only hope I never have to make that decision. I would be wracked by indecision.
I know. It was certainly an interesting exercise.
My 5 for life would be:
Sailor King of Pen
Pilot 743 ( my 823 )
Pelikan M205
Visconti Skeleton (not a fountain pen, but a capless rollerball that can use a Parker style ballpoint and it came with a cartridge filled with pencil leads)
Parker 180 (a very unique nib that has 2 tips, intended to be reverse written)
Leonardo Momento Zero Grande
I noticed you actually have 7 pens on this video? I understand why the Lamy and Visconti are on the list. They are too early in your collection. I do hope they will eventually make the top 5.
I am not sure about the Kaweco. For me, a bit thin and light. The nib is very nice, though.
I've noticed a few people mentioning the M205 as I've gone through the comments.
I think the Homo Sapiens is heading towards replacing the 823. And I think the 2000 would knock out the Kaweco, although the Kaweco is so handing to just put into my pockets when I head out.
My five pens from my collection
#1: 1970s Pilot Elite with the Posting Nib
#2: 1960s Platinum Pocket Pen with Fine Nib
#3: Kaweco Sport Mellow Blue with Medium Nib
#4: Jinhao x750 Shimmering Sands with the Goulet Fine Flex Nib
#5: Sheaffer Imperial II with a Fine Nib
Top five that I would like
1: Pilot Vanishing Point with a fine or medium nib (Workhorse)
2: Pilot E95s with a fine or medium nib (Mid-Tier)
3: Lamy 2000 with an extra-fine or fine nib (Workhorse)
4: Kyuseido Kakari FS Titanium with an Architect or 2 Layer Stacked Nib (High End)
5: Carolina Pen Co. Charlotte Model medium or broad nib in one of the Unicorn Autopsy blanks
I'll have to check out the Unicorn Autopsy blank. I wonder if any Aus-based makers stock them. It sounds like an interesting named blank.
@@GarryEves It's made by Johnathon Brooks' daughter I think they sell the blanks on the Carolina Pen Co site.
