I wish Goodreads had genre categories for self-published books. It would bring so much more attention to them and help Goodreads get over its thing again them. I'm not mad about Legends and Lates at all. Haven't read it, and never will, but good for them lol.

Theoretically, you could actually finish the book before round 1 ends and vote for it if you think it's deserving. Rhythm of War now, that didn't come out until well into voting! At its size, there was no humanly way to finish it and vote in good faith lol. 😅

I feel like the Fantasy genre is just such a broad range of different things you can’t fit everything into one category and give them all a fair shot. I agree that there needs to be separate catagories for sequels because those fan bases have been established before the release of the newest book they are always going to be more “popular” than something brand new that hasn’t had that time in the world. Very similar to your points on Indi published books that are then picked up by publishers. I also think those Indi authors deserve their own category, they deserve way more recognition than they get from Goodreads. I also agree with you on a Fantasy Romance category. I love fantasy romance but it does feel very different from more epic fantasy which I also love. Putting them in separate categories would allow more amazing authors to get the recognition they deserve. Great video and discussion, you gave me some things to think about lol. I try to just have fun with the awards but it is disappointing when you don’t see things that definitely deserve to be there or that you really love . I feel with some changes it could be a lot more fun for a wider range of people. I would also love to hear your thoughts on Legends and Lattes, I haven’t picked it up but I am intrigued and I usually have similar taste as you.

  • @DwayneRidgwayOfficial
    @DwayneRidgwayOfficial Год назад +4

I just kind of wish the awards worked more like the Game Awards, being broken up by certain genres (Fantasy, Romance, Historical Fiction, etc) but also by specific criteria (Best Written Romance? Best Worldbuilding? Fanciest Prose?). I think that would help even more than making new 'genres,' and lets people see books with things they specifically like. If you have several books in a 'Best Worldbuilding' category and you like worldbuilding, then you'd totally be interested in checking out all of those. "Best Written Romance" would also have the same effect, I think, as making a "fantasy romance" genre, since if the romance is particularly good in those novels they should realistically be included.
Those are just my two cents, though.

    • @Maxiiim02
      @Maxiiim02 Год назад

I think your two cents make sense; specific criteria categories would be very smart and helpful. It would help people find new books if they know what they like, and it could also expose them to other corners of the genre. I would be all over that "Fancy Prose" category as well as the world building one because I know I like those things, but if a book in another category got a ton of love I would consider checking it out. Awards are for the creators but also about exposure. You want people to read? Make the awards conducive towards that. As someone who comes in and out of the hobby depending on what is going on in life, sometimes the hardest thing is knowing what to pick up and where to start, especially if you don't have a lot of time. I think specific nomination categories would be quite useful in that regard and also get more people engaged because there are more chances of their favorites winning something. There's so much fantasy and only one award! Anyways, just my two cents as well, lol.

Goodreads doesn’t like self-published books. For example in the romance category they never have any self published books but so many people love self published romance. I absolutely loved Thistlefoot, but you recently mentioned that you struggle with magical elements in a modern setting. You might enjoy The Witch and the Tsar more. It came out right after Thistlefoot, and if you are interested in Baba Yaga this might be a better fit. It's an origin story for her and is set in the court of Ivan the Terrible. It has a wonderful blend of fantasy and historical fiction that I think you would enjoy.

  • @lieslherman

I definitely have to echo that it just feels weird how little epic fantasy is on the list, and that the cut off always causes some really wacky results, like the fact Jade Legacy iirc was not on last years or this years, and that felt like SUCH a big release. I tend to lean more towards books like Engines of Empire and Justice of Kings, Hunger of the Gods, Age of Ash, Empire of Exiles... So not a single fantasy book I pre-ordered made the cut. XD I just find it fascinating that Fantasy can encompass such a HUGE range of types of stories and it gets one category, but something like memoirs has a much more narrow feeling criteria and gets just as many books. Not that I care very much about the awards at all, but it does feel like certain kinds of books get 0 representation... What a surprise in a popularity contest. 🤣

I feel Hunger of the Gods got snubbed. it has 7000 adds, 4.57 rating on Goodreads right now. Thistlefoot has less than 3000, 4.08 rating. I have no idea how books get nominated.

I was also super curious about how Hunger of the Gods was not on the list since it has high numbers for average ratings and number of ratings. Check out the book stats for Hunger of the Gods and Thistlefoot you'll see that Thistlefoot has much higher numbers for "want to read" and "Added to shelves". It appears that Goodreads possibly weights those two stats more than average and ratings. Interesting. 🤔

I agree that fantasy romance should be its own category. Yeah of course there's overlap between fantasy and fantasy romance readers, but I think readers generally have different motivations for reading one or the other, and it's usually a very intentional choice to avoid or pick up a fantasy vs. fantasy romance.

First I’m so surprised you didn’t mention The Art of Prophecy not being in the nominees. Second, while you were reading the list I thought “Hhmm, shame John Gwynn isn’t on here” and then you mentioned it. Thank you. I agree. I’ve been itching for the 3rd installment but recently found out his daughter died suddenly and I can only imagine finishing a book is the furthest thing on his mind after losing your child. And finally third, I agree about the fantasy romance needing to be its own category. I’ve worked in book stores for years and have been harping on this forever. I’m not a fan of the category and when looking for new books to read I have to research and scrutinize a title to make sure I’m not getting magical smut. I’m easily tricked by an awesome looking cover.

Even though you're not big on mystery/thriller, I think you should try one of the selections The Violin Conspiracy. Basically, it's about this violin prodigy who gets his Strad stolen (not a spoiler; I think it starts that way, being the main plot point) just as he's preparing for the Tchaikovsky competition. It goes on to flashback on how he came across it, and the various hardships he had to go through, including racism 'cause he's black, his determination to get the instrument back, and it's got a ton of classical music throughout. I thought it was really fun, pretty fast paced, and an interesting twist at the end.

I definitely feel like we need a separate category for fantasy romance. It would make room for more “traditional” fantasy books to have a chance as well as fantasy that would be categorized as romance. I love both so it would be nice to have them as their own thing! That would make it easier to vote anyway if two of your favorites were nominated for the same category!

I have no problem with The Altas Six getting recognition here. If Goodreads doesn't count self-pub, then the only way Olivie Blake could make the list would be in this year's Goodreads Choice Awards. So, if this is a popularity contest, then it wouldn't make any sense to exclude something that has dominated TikTok for the past couple years. I was actually surprised when it wasn't on the list last year because it felt like that book was absolutely everywhere.
Legends and Lattes is easier to understand, as both the initial release and the publisher's release happened in the same year. It also feels very "of the moment" if we're thinking about the growing cosy fantasy trend.
As for new categories, I know they used to have Paranormal as a category awhile ago, so a Fantasy Romance category doesn't feel like much of a stretch. My only worry would be that Goodreads seems to have no clue what counts as romance, so I could see a lot of female authors having their fantasies shoved into Fantasy Romance even if they didn't belong there. I could also see male authors' fantasies with a lot of romantic elements being put into general fantasy instead of FanRo...

  • @Maxiiim02

I love the idea of a sequel category, as well as the ratings ranges.
Personally, I think sequels have a particular job to do, they have to continue a story, and in most cases, not end it (I feel like duologies are rare, but I don't read nearly as much as others so maybe I'm just not exposed to them) so it would be cool to see discussion about how well a sequel pulled off being the "middle" of the story while also being a book on their own (thinking of trilogies cuz those are common, but it would also be cool to compare how sequels read in quartets or longer series like Sandersons').
The ratings categories/ranges would be nice cuz I can find new books I might be interested in!

I was so happy to see Nettle and Bone nominated! And I totally agree about splitting sequels into their own category. As for self-published books, I unfortunately feel like (generally) if a book has been self-published and not picked up by a bigger publishing company, they probably have a smaller audience and would be less likely to be voted for. I hadn't heard of the Atlas Six until it got republished, which is not a sign of the book's quality, but of a smaller ability to get marketed. It might be cool if there was a category specifically for self-published books, which would expose them to a larger audience and not put them against the more widely marketed big publisher books.

Honestly I stopped caring what's on the GR list a few years ago. It's always a popularity contest where someone just sees a name and votes for it. I do understand it's exciting for the authors so that part is a positive. I think it should be the following year myself. Like voting for 2022 books in the beginning of 2023. I definitely don't think it's fair for books that are released in November... there's just not enough time.

  • @kibert135
    @kibert135 Год назад +2

I was suprised that three books (technically four) I read and actualy really liked are nominated. Here is a little list and my reason for liking them:
    1. She Gets the Girl by Rachael Lippincott and Alyson Derrick(nominated for YA Fiction): This is a cute little YA romance about two girls falling in love while the one is helping the other to gain more confidence to finally ask out her crush. What elevates this story is that it talks about a lot more than just cute hijinks. It is about what it is like to try to break out of your shell, dealing with toxic relationships, getting in touch with ones culture while the parents seem to denounce it and a lot more. Those themes are not the focus but it helps to flesh out the characters and the world beyond the romantic main plot. And I liked the main characters together.
    2. Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree (nominated for Fantasy): I am a fan of cozy fantasy. More often than not I tend to not like epic fantasy. That has more to do with the genre conventions that authors seem to stick to a lot more in fantasy than in science fiction and my specific taste. Lucky for me cozy fantasy is more willing to break out of these conventions. And the specific story about Viv opening a coffee shop with help of some new friends is really wholesome with enough conflicts to not make it feel like only fluff.
    3. Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (nominated in Science Fiction): I love the Locked Tomb series. What I love most is how willing it is to completly change POVs and settings with each book. And it may seem like it doesn't fit together but there is still a big main plot told. This series just tells it in a very unique way. The mix of fantasy and science fiction combined with the very specific way the story is told (including a lot of memes and love), the Locked Tomb series still manages to be exellent. The first three book are all among my most favorite books.
    4. The Genesis of Mysery by Neon Yang (nominated for Science Fiction): I have not finished reading this book. But I already love the world and its characters. The way this novel presents itself has similarities with the first Locked Tomb book "Gideon the Ninth" without feeling like a carbon copy. That is mostly due to the more overt religous themes and it being a reimagining of Joan of Arc's story. Right now it is a funny and diverse story that I can't wait to continue reading.

As I'm from Germany the Release-Dates always are chaotic for me to keep up with :D As for example: The Atlas Six (1) came out this year for us germans and I'm still currently reading it. Crescent City (2) also was released this mid-summer! That however I read as fast as I could - but didn't vote for, because of your examples. It feels to me that Goodreads nominees tend to lean toward books that are primarily read by women. Not that those books are unqualified for the nomination but that traditional fantasy is getting pushed more and more to the side for books that are more romance than fantasy.
I’d love to see this award change by having multiple categories get awards then each category winner be placed into the pool of nominees for best overall fantasy book. This turns it into more of a sport-style competition and less of a popularity contest at the top. Obviously, this solution isn’t perfect but I’d prefer it over the current way Goodreads does things.

I think I personally have a much narrower view of fantasy than the current view of the genre. Mostly because of what I enjoy (more epic, heroic, sword and sorcery, historical, etc). Sooo many of the titles learn toward romance, near young adult, urban, etc. I’m not sure what I’d add since I didn’t read many titles that were released this year, but I didn’t find much on the list that interested me. Which was disappointing. Nor on the SciFi list.
And this may be an unpopular take, but the choices seemed geared toward a female readership which may reflect the makeup of the user base of goodreads?

I'm part way through reading it and everything's coming to a head. I'd suggest it for you, but it's probably not for everyone. Very stream of consciousness almost with the perspective of the teenaged protagonist. I could see some folks finding her annoying. I enjoy it, though. Kind of a guilty pleasure. Not surprised to see the new Sara J Maas book nominated, but really? I agree that fantasy romance needs its own category. It's so different from the epic stuff. You can get a rare hit like Atlas Six, but it's a sad truth that self-published books generally just don't get those numbers because they didn't hit TikTok and don't have the marketing money a traditional publisher does. 😔

Jade Legacy should have been nominated. It came out 11/30/21 and was valid for this year since Cytonic was nominated, which came out earlier than that. I wish The Justice of Kings also had been nominated. Book of the Month has way too much influence on what gets nominated and they cater toward a specific audience. Of these, I just don't want House of Sky and Breath to win. Epic fantasy just has a hard time making these lists unless a Sanderson type author wrote it. Myth retellings, fantasy romance, and general fiction crossover always dominate the lists. And Botm favors these types of books.
Beyond fantasy, I think Black Cake is quite good and I voted for that for best debut novel. It's a family saga that centers around a Caribbean island family (specific country is never mentioned). Remarkably Bright Creatures is also a delightful read. One of the points of view is an octopus and one of the protagonists is an elderly women, which is fairly uncommon in fiction.

I read the Atlas Six september last year, so for sure it was published before and I agree that it looks like the self-published books are not taken seriously or like "real books". Otherwise, I just don't care about Goodreads choice awards because you can know who will win even before the list is even published. If Sara J Maas publiishes a book, that will win (even if I heard some bad things about this last one so maybe the rest has small chance?).
Also agree with books that are not possibly read before the books are published. Happened the same with Rhythm of War. Is unfair to everyone and almost insulting to the competition. It's like who chooses these books doesn't even care.
At least I am happy The Golden Enclaves is there because I have loved the whole series even if you have not read it :) I'll be voting for that as I have not read the Lost Metal yet and I don't want to vote for something I haven't read (even if I think I'll like it better)

100% agree with having a fantasy romance sub-category and also dividing books by the number of ratings. Even though there are more prestigious awards out there Goodreads Choice Awards does reach an audience that other awards don't and it can make a huge change for small authors to have their books win it. Sarah J Maas is way beyond the point of needing that.
On another note when you have the time you really should give The Scholomance trilogy a try! I can't recommend the audiobook version enough, Anisha Dadia is the better narrator I've ever heard. Those books have a pretty unique main character, an awesome cast of (mainly female) side characters, and a really cool magic system.

Thistlefoot was one of the best books I read this year and generally wouldn’t be something I love.
It’s not really a retelling, it’s more like the Baba Yaga story is part of it, part of the history of the current story, kind of running along concurrently.
I think fantasy is the best category for it with a subcategory of folklore.
A book about generational trauma using folklore and storytelling is probably the best way I could describe it so someone has an idea of what it’s about without giving much away. Definitely check trigger warnings if you’re someone who needs to. On top of the specific generational trauma there was a scene in particular that was a bit intense but so important to the story being told.
I think it’s a very relevant for current events and told in a such a unique and thoughtful way.

I feel like they could do sub-genre's and then the last vote would condense into one major genre Fantasy, Romance, Fiction, etc. Maybe do a 3 series vote bracket type deal and narrow it down. Not Just 2.
I saw people online arguing for a historical fiction romance sub genre bc of Bridgerton readers, which is similar to the argument you have for fantasy romance.
I agree with those pushing for an indie publisher section too. Goodreads is owned by Amazon, who owns Kindle, and is a major source for self publishers through ebook. Why is that not part of a marketing scheme?

I do like the idea of having a tier-based system for the Goodreads nominees, but I will say that I do think it would mean a lot less to an author to see their book on the nominee list for "0-1k reviews", than it would for them to make it on the list along with all of the big name authors who are expected to be there. I think there is some level of...I don't know if 'prestige' is the right word?...that would be lost in a tiered system. If I were in that spot, it would feel a bit like a consolation prize, though I can see how it would be valuable in terms of publicity for my book. But it is something to consider.

I think they should have an epic fantasy section because I feel like Fantasy is too broad of an umbrella and cuts off so much. I think there should be atleast two maybe three: Epic,Fantasy Romance, and one other and go from there. I think why many epics don't make it as the whole: They are big and long and people are intimidated/ short attentions spans. I personally love a big chunky epic fantasy over smaller epic fantasy...but thats just me.

I disagree with your self-publishing vs big name publisher. If I release a book on my blog, but it takes years to gain traction, then gets picked up by Penguin and republished, then that book would not be eligible for nomination under your suggested rule. The issue is that you have different kinds of self publishing which are not equal, so you would have to carve out two categories within self publishing for the award nominations to be fair.
It seems like it would be more a mess than it is now.

Part of me wonders if the way they put Lost Metal up for voting is a way to ensure Sanderson doesn’t win. He’s so popular, and prolific (I noticed two other books by him in different categories) that I think they are trying to minimize his chances of winning. Knowing human nature, they would see it as leveling the playing field.

I think the only thing I was outright bummed about was that Greywaren by Maggie Stiefvater wasn't nominated in a fantasy category (either YA or in adult like The Golden Enclaves which is a similar trilogy finale). I read a lot of new indie books on KU, but otherwise I'm bad at keeping up with new releases, so there's always a little disconnect for me when the nominations come out.
But I definitely agree there should be a category for sequels, and I would like to see one for self-published books the way they have for debut authors of all genres.

Goodreads awards is a popularity contest, which means self published books probably wouldn't have audience to ever be nominated for an award. So yea, I am ok with them being nominated when they get released by traditional publishers. That way these authors get some well deserved recognition for their work. Goodreads nominees /awards should be improved to account for size of readership. That way it would be easier for smaller authors to be recognised for their work

Yes! I'm very sad epic fantasy gets shafted every year in favour of retellings, romantic fantasy, and other uhhh ya / na / crossover / women's fiction fantasy if I might call it. Goodreads demographics does not like epic fantasy. I have no idea why N. K. Jemisin's newest book is even on the list, it has extremely small amount of reviews and shelvings in comparison to Hunger of the Gods. Other books that got shafted: The Oleander Sword (Jasmine Throne #2), Justice of Kings, In the Shadow of Lightning (new series from Brian McClellan, author of Powder Mage), Locklands (Foundryside #3), The First Binding (aka Asian Name of the Wind), The Final Strife (North African inspired epic fantasy), Age of Ash. Also why is Golden Enclaves in adult fantasy, I thought it was YA and Naomi Novik even got Lodestar award for the previous book in the series, and that's a YA SFF award. And yep, they should defo separate romantic fantasy from the list, basically Sarah J. Maas cannibalizes fantasy category every year she has a book and gets the reward by a landslide.

I'm kinda bothered by The Atlas Six, since it took a couple of years to get picked up.
Legends and Lattes came out in February, so that's fine.
My money* is on Stephen King winning. He's likely to attract voters who notice the book is nominated when they add it, who otherwise wouldn't look at the fantasy category.
I'm not sure there's a perfect cutoff date that's not going to get things that most people won't have had a chance to read yet, since you'll still get things like The World We Make which has only been out for a week, but having it be on a Monday would seem less ridiculous.

Just a personal opinion, but when more than half of your award nominees feel like they were made for the same exact audience, and fit into the same exact sub-genre, I kind of lose interest in the award. Variety is the spice of life(pardon the cliché) , and my prefect world would have a diverse array of picks from a diverse array of tastes. That's why I agree that Fantasy Romance is big enough for it's own genre...Fantasy Romance dominates WAY too much and a separate category for it would provide a chance for more variety to choose from within Fantasy Romance, while also making the main fantasy category feel more diverse by freeing up more space for other books from different sub-genres. I know Fantasy Romance is insanely popular, so of course it will win most of the "people's choice" style of awards...but come on...There's gotta be a way to get more of both!
