I stopped producing six years ago. Honestely I never knew why but there was a day that I closed the studio door and went in the search for something else. A few days ago I turned on the computer again and I managed to install all the software I have bought over the years and little by little I'm connecting all the hardware I have left. I know you posted this video over 3 years ago. I think people should see the entire part of the console to include the rack. computer hard drives and cabling as well as the power supplies, and what it takes to run an SSL console or console of that magnitude in a home so they can understand why it takes a while to get them commissioned and decommissioned. And why it takes 5 to 6 people to move one. That would be a great video. As well as the maintenance and support and why these consoles have the sound they have as well as API, NEVE, Helios, Harrison, MCI, and So forth, Basically explain about the transformers and the circuitry. I know this could be a long video. But maybe a basic general overview of the concept of a real console and why its the heart of any commercial studio. Thanks for making great videos.

Very helpful! After watching many of your videos in no particular order, I wondered how outboard gear was brought into a signal path. I use Logic and work mostly in the box so I wasn’t sure how the connections were made on the console side of things. Now I have a better understanding after your explanation of the bus section. I had noticed in your other videos that there was a part of the console with a rectangular grid of things (the bus buttons) I didn’t understand, so the close-up of each section of the console and explanation of how it works was exactly what I wanted to see.

Great tutorial Warren - you know what baffles me though is why people so often demonstrate gear without routing an actual signal that you can hear and affect - nothing clarifies signal flow like an actual signal! Why not plug in a microphone or line level signal and use that to explain the desk?

I have a little Berhinger Xenyx, for recoding E drums and guitar with a Dynamic mic. Much simpler than that mix table, but it's still very usefull to know basics about it ! Good job for making it easy to understand !

Using an Allen&Heath Qu-32 desk for recording and mixing mainly in live situations but using it as my audio interface when I'm in my very humble home studio. This desk is great because it gives me 32x32 audio channels via USB 2.0 so I can record a whole band at once and monitor the recording through the desk .

Warren Outstanding videos,LA hair band rocker turning to recording. Here is what really interests me and I get different answers depending on who I ask. Do you mix live while you are tracking, or do you like to mix after the fact playing it back through your console?
The best answer for this Ben is record like you don’t need to mix! Capture the sound you hear and mixing will be easy! So many great records come up on the faders sounding like the record!

Produce Like A Pro On that topic I'm a bit confused about the terms "group" and "bus". Are they the same thing? I was using a small 16 channel studio mixer once that had groups where you could route several channels to a group to control them all with one fader (the group fader). It also had sends and returns where you could route things to external effects. But what exactly is a "bus"?
Hi Niklas Lindholm great question!! A 'Bus' or 'Aux' (as we say in England) is a term used for the signal bing routed to a different destination such as an effects unit or a headphone mix, a group as it suggests is two or more channels that are grouped together. On my SSL for instance the group faders are controlling from 1-8, number 1 the drums, 2 Bass, 3 Electric Guitar Rhythm etc etc. Does that help? Let me know if you have any other further questions. I have a Zoom R16, it is an audio interface with midi control faders! So I can record with it and afterwards use it as a midi interface in pro tools, very awesome!
After careful consideration of needs and budget, I also got a Zoom R24 to includein my setup. It isn't my main recorder (it is for mobile sessions, though) and I am surprised at how much better it is than I expected. Even the cheap preamps don't really add much noise at all until you get to halway up or more. SO much flexibility in the unit....I don't regret it!!
I got everything based on what they offered and how they could all be used together....I like options!! I don't have a large budget and have to be creative when buying gear also. Here is my main setup: I have a Soundcraft Signature 12MTK as main board...Great for the money!! I also have the Zoom R24, which is great for mobile OR studio work. It gives the ability to record and/transfer files via SD card or USB flash drive and also can send straught to computer (Amazing flexibility just here alone)....has the sequencer, rhythm machine, looper..... I have Reaper as my DAW for computer. I can record and then mix 12 tracks with the Soundcraft......or....I can do, say, 24 tracks all through the Soundcraft and then use the Zoom as a 24-track Interface controller. I can transfer files or link usb between Everything....can use Zoom as a recorder from other units to its Sd or usb....and it is iust Amazing!! Anything going to Zoom, I bypass its preamps so they are NO problem quality wise....the soundcraft has good Ghost pre's and I also have outboard pre's. Far too much to get into, but the flexibility is Amazing and I have only just begun learning the stuff. Seems the choices I made were actually good and I have SO many options using all the stuff together....just Fantastic!!

'When you send your vocal to a console its getting compressed' Why is this? Do mixing desks automatically compress? 'If you do your fader move in your DAW, not only do you turn it up, you are hitting the compressor on your console a little harder.' i think your videos are terrific. I have been trying to learn the "black arts" for some time and your explanations are the most succinct an concise I have come across. Your "talk to you" and not "talk at" or "talk down" method of delivery is very informative and welcoming. Ok, to my questions - could you please show us how to connect the output from PT to your desk for mixing as you said that's where you do it. Also in your lists of busses on PT you assign things to like bus 22 and 23 - how do you get so many inputs on PT. My I/O interface like you mBox only allows 2 in and 2 out. Do you have a special interface from the SSL to PT? Cheers

Hi great video, I have a question. When sending signal to your SSL, how do you send the signal from your protocols track, direct out to the channel on your SSL or inserts out and return back to protocol? I have a gl3300 mixer, 192 interface 16 channel, I am trying to send my tracks to the Allen heath gl3300 mixer for mix down, but not sure what is the best way to make that connections for best results, can you help me p!please?
Great Video. I have yet to see an depth video like this (going through the board with such detail) I love the sound of the SSL4000. it just bleeds richness. When I went from Analog to Digital, the thing I missed the most was hands on faders, knobs and buttons. in the late 80's, early 90's we became "The masters of button maneuvering" punching in, using our feet, exc. I have an older Mackie MCU (like the HUI) and it gives me that feeling I used to have when doing analog. I do however, miss the sound of Tape very much. but to be practical, I needed get with the generation. but I still can fill that void I got with slamming the Tape heads, getting that natural compression. thanks for the lesson Warren. You are a God send for me. you've taught me a lot in these videos.
Hey Warren, I started out with the KRK Rokit 6 which I would say is amazing for a beginner. I still see them in the odd pro studio and I know Moog uses them in their QC process for building their synthesizers. I am going to get my second set of monitors and I am going for either the Neumann KH-120 or the Focal CMS-65. I a/b'd them the other day and I'm having trouble deciding.

After 17 Records I’ve decided to build my own home studio for mainly preproduction and vocals. I wish I had payed more attention in the studio, but recording was always a hassle and I never enjoyed it, so I wasted many great education opportunities. Now oddly enough I want to learn. I am thinking about getting the new Raven MTI2 to run Logic on my iMac. There is so much out there, it’s very overwhelming. If I can get my sea legs I may indulge myself and get the Box or the small 50/60 centerpiece console. What’s your thought on the The Raven? Thanks for all the videos.

Quite fascinating Warren.. When I mix and bounce to disc in the box, I lose what seems to be so much subtlety, detail and musicality. Does mixing and bouncing to the outside world using a console help mitigate that frustrating and often disheartening problem.?
Hi Allen Smith thanks for the great question! Yes I always listen to my mix on input from the record channels. I have two channels that I record back to Pro Tools, this is left in input and I monitor those channels so what I hear is what the final mix will sound like. I hope that helps! Great video Warren.I really like your material. Having being brought up with recording in the box I don't really get why you would want a console like that.It really looks like too much trouble and very unwieldy. Wheres the added value in having something like an SSL over a Pro Tools rig.

Hi Huart! Just want to get your professional opinion. Having a console let's say 32 channel desk, How do you really add plugins like the wave in a console? I mean in the box you have virtually unlimited number of plugins, and you can also add multi layer plugins like Chris Lord-alge plugins. And If you buy a high quality interface with console grade mic-pres such as Audient or antilope, You are sorted with some great mic-pres as well. But if you get a real console, you are stuck with the built-in EQ, compressor and lo/hi cut filters only, Also it needs outboard effects and any other compressors which you need to add colors. So how do you configure a mixing console to really work like a total software-based mixing platform? I am very eager to invest in a mid-scale console, yet not convince about the flexibility, Sorry for the long question!. Thank you!

One thing i notice on mixing console video tutorials is they only talk about the input channels. They never talk about the output section. such as how the buss compressor is used or how the studio monitors are controlled or how the automation is used.
That’s an amazing question! I have never shot them out side by side! The 4000 has the record for the most amount of hit songs mixed on it, it’s a sound you’re very familiar with to say the least!
Produce Like A Pro I’ve heard mixes from a Duality and sounds big of course, but not as warmth as the 4000. I imagine the AWS sounds similar to the Duality. Is the 9000 similar to the 4000 as well? Cheers!
What about taking the pre-amp out, putting it straight into the DAW, then routing output of each track in the DAW to the rest of the consoles channel strip? Wouldn't that allow you to fully mix down on the board?
Yes. I have an SSL 4056. I routinely place my inputs (line or mic) on channels 1-24. I can adjust volume, EQ, Compress, add inserts, etc. I can then go Direct out of each channel to the corresponding "tape" output and "record" in to my DAW's AD convertor (1-24). I select each DAW channel output to 1-24 and those DAW outputs (DA convertor) show up on my SSL's 25-56 inputs. This allows me independent control of both the record inputs and outputs. It certainly makes for quick work in the studio!
Hey Warren, If you wanted to simulate the signal flow itb with a summing plugin like Slate VCC, would you put that as your 1st insert, or would it be more accurate to place it on your last insert, post fader so when you pull up Faders you're driving the saturation/console in the plugin as well? Thanks!

Midi faders are really awesome compared to the mouse especially if your recording your own vocal and need to lower the gain. There nothing more annoying then grabbing the mouse when performing lol. I use a Novation Impulse 48 keys comes with 8 channel faders, one master fader, 8 rotary knobs, and 8 drum pads. Automation with the faders or knobs is a lot nicer then the mouse. For some instruments I rarely use my X box 360 controller set on absolute for the triggers and analog sticks for wild automation on filters or FM. There is one plug in FL studios called Fruity X-Y Controller that lets you do that and i herd a guy programed a special plugin for ableton Live so he can use his Power Glove from Nintendo for midi automation lol.

Produce Like A Pro Helping others as much as i can is what i like to do. So many things you can learn in music that effects every side of music or occupation in music. Like for faders it makes work flow easier for the musician, singer or the producer and not just the mixer or mastering engineer. I herd one engineer i believe Andrew Scheps said he only lets his engineer apprentices use faders and not the mouse. I thought it was just a luxury thing till i started automating with the mouse and getting results i didn't want and recording the automations over and over again. Sometimes the mouse works for certain quick automations on an effect,but it's always hard for smooth moves.

I just bought a Midas M32 and connected to my PC running Pro Tools First. How do I setup my inputs and outputs so I can hear the music and start recording instrumentals and vocals.

Quick question for you. If you're tracking and Mixng through your console, do you use the dynamics and eq on the way in, reset them then mix after coming back in through the line input or would you just track clean with no processing and leave the processing for the "mix" stage?

Dear Produce like a Pro, I have recently acquired a mackie tt24 live console and so far I'm loving it but I need something closer to the source such as an SSL. I believe I'm not listening to as much hardware as I would from a traditional SSL but correct me if I am mistaken.

As well as the maintenance and support and why these consoles have the sound they have as well as API, NEVE, Helios, Harrison, MCI, and So forth, Basically explain about the transformers and the circuitry. I know this could be a long video. But maybe a basic general overview of the concept of a real console and why its the heart of any commercial studio. Thanks for making great videos.

Very helpful! After watching many of your videos in no particular order, I wondered how outboard gear was brought into a signal path. I use Logic and work mostly in the box so I wasn’t sure how the connections were made on the console side of things. Now I have a better understanding after your explanation of the bus section. I had noticed in your other videos that there was a part of the console with a rectangular grid of things (the bus buttons) I didn’t understand, so the close-up of each section of the console and explanation of how it works was exactly what I wanted to see.

Great tutorial Warren - you know what baffles me though is why people so often demonstrate gear without routing an actual signal that you can hear and affect - nothing clarifies signal flow like an actual signal! Why not plug in a microphone or line level signal and use that to explain the desk?

Using an Allen&Heath Qu-32 desk for recording and mixing mainly in live situations but using it as my audio interface when I'm in my very humble home studio. This desk is great because it gives me 32x32 audio channels via USB 2.0 so I can record a whole band at once and monitor the recording through the desk .

Here is what really interests me and I get different answers depending on who I ask. Do you mix live while you are tracking, or do you like to mix after the fact playing it back through your console?
The best answer for this Ben is record like you don’t need to mix! Capture the sound you hear and mixing will be easy! So many great records come up on the faders sounding like the record!

Produce Like A Pro On that topic I'm a bit confused about the terms "group" and "bus". Are they the same thing? I was using a small 16 channel studio mixer once that had groups where you could route several channels to a group to control them all with one fader (the group fader). It also had sends and returns where you could route things to external effects. But what exactly is a "bus"?
Hi Niklas Lindholm great question!! A 'Bus' or 'Aux' (as we say in England) is a term used for the signal bing routed to a different destination such as an effects unit or a headphone mix, a group as it suggests is two or more channels that are grouped together. On my SSL for instance the group faders are controlling from 1-8, number 1 the drums, 2 Bass, 3 Electric Guitar Rhythm etc etc. Does that help? Let me know if you have any other further questions. I have a Zoom R16, it is an audio interface with midi control faders! So I can record with it and afterwards use it as a midi interface in pro tools, very awesome!

After careful consideration of needs and budget, I also got a Zoom R24 to includein my setup. It isn't my main recorder (it is for mobile sessions, though) and I am surprised at how much better it is than I expected. Even the cheap preamps don't really add much noise at all until you get to halway up or more. SO much flexibility in the unit....I don't regret it!!
I got everything based on what they offered and how they could all be used together....I like options!! I don't have a large budget and have to be creative when buying gear also. Here is my main setup: I have a Soundcraft Signature 12MTK as main board...Great for the money!! I also have the Zoom R24, which is great for mobile OR studio work. It gives the ability to record and/transfer files via SD card or USB flash drive and also can send straught to computer (Amazing flexibility just here alone)....has the sequencer, rhythm machine, looper..... I have Reaper as my DAW for computer. I can record and then mix 12 tracks with the Soundcraft......or....I can do, say, 24 tracks all through the Soundcraft and then use the Zoom as a 24-track Interface controller. I can transfer files or link usb between Everything....can use Zoom as a recorder from other units to its Sd or usb....and it is iust Amazing!! Anything going to Zoom, I bypass its preamps so they are NO problem quality wise....the soundcraft has good Ghost pre's and I also have outboard pre's. Far too much to get into, but the flexibility is Amazing and I have only just begun learning the stuff. Seems the choices I made were actually good and I have SO many options using all the stuff together....just Fantastic!!

'When you send your vocal to a console its getting compressed' Why is this? Do mixing desks automatically compress? 'If you do your fader move in your DAW, not only do you turn it up, you are hitting the compressor on your console a little harder.' i think your videos are terrific. I have been trying to learn the "black arts" for some time and your explanations are the most succinct an concise I have come across. Your "talk to you" and not "talk at" or "talk down" method of delivery is very informative and welcoming. Ok, to my questions - could you please show us how to connect the output from PT to your desk for mixing as you said that's where you do it. Also in your lists of busses on PT you assign things to like bus 22 and 23 - how do you get so many inputs on PT. My I/O interface like you mBox only allows 2 in and 2 out. Do you have a special interface from the SSL to PT? Cheers

When sending signal to your SSL, how do you send the signal from your protocols track, direct out to the channel on your SSL or inserts out and return back to protocol? Great Video. I have yet to see an depth video like this (going through the board with such detail) I love the sound of the SSL4000. it just bleeds richness. When I went from Analog to Digital, the thing I missed the most was hands on faders, knobs and buttons. in the late 80's, early 90's we became "The masters of button maneuvering" punching in, using our feet, exc. I have an older Mackie MCU (like the HUI) and it gives me that feeling I used to have when doing analog. I do however, miss the sound of Tape very much. but to be practical, I needed get with the generation. but I still can fill that void I got with slamming the Tape heads, getting that natural compression. thanks for the lesson Warren. You are a God send for me. you've taught me a lot in these videos.

Hey Warren, I started out with the KRK Rokit 6 which I would say is amazing for a beginner. I still see them in the odd pro studio and I know Moog uses them in their QC process for building their synthesizers. I am going to get my second set of monitors and I am going for either the Neumann KH-120 or the Focal CMS-65. I a/b'd them the other day and I'm having trouble deciding.

After 17 Records I’ve decided to build my own home studio for mainly preproduction and vocals. I wish I had payed more attention in the studio, but recording was always a hassle and I never enjoyed it, so I wasted many great education opportunities. Now oddly enough I want to learn. I am thinking about getting the new Raven MTI2 to run Logic on my iMac. There is so much out there, it’s very overwhelming. If I can get my sea legs I may indulge myself and get the Box or the small 50/60 centerpiece console. What’s your thought on the The Raven? Thanks for all the videos.

Quite fascinating Warren.. When I mix and bounce to disc in the box, I lose what seems to be so much subtlety, detail and musicality. Does mixing and bouncing to the outside world using a console help mitigate that frustrating and often disheartening problem.?
Hi Allen Smith thanks for the great question! Yes I always listen to my mix on input from the record channels. I have two channels that I record back to Pro Tools, this is left in input and I monitor those channels so what I hear is what the final mix will sound like. I hope that helps! Great video Warren.I really like your material. Having being brought up with recording in the box I don't really get why you would want a console like that.It really looks like too much trouble and very unwieldy. Wheres the added value in having something like an SSL over a Pro Tools rig.

Hi Huart! Just want to get your professional opinion. Having a console let's say 32 channel desk, How do you really add
plugins like the wave in a console? I mean in the box you have virtually unlimited number of plugins, and you can also add multi layer plugins like Chris Lord-alge plugins. And If you buy a high quality interface with console grade mic-pres such as Audient or antilope, You are sorted with some great mic-pres as well. But if you get a real console, you are stuck with the built-in EQ, compressor and lo/hi cut filters only, Also it needs outboard effects and any other compressors which you need to add colors. So how do you configure a mixing console to really work like a total software-based mixing platform? I am very eager to invest in a mid-scale console, yet not convince about the flexibility, Sorry for the long question!. Thank you!

One thing i notice on mixing console video tutorials is they only talk about the input channels. They never talk about the output section. such as how the buss compressor is used or how the studio monitors are controlled or how the automation is used.

That’s an amazing question! I have never shot them out side by side! The 4000 has the record for the most amount of hit songs mixed on it, it’s a sound you’re very familiar with to say the least!
Produce Like A Pro I’ve heard mixes from a Duality and sounds big of course, but not as warmth as the 4000. I imagine the AWS sounds similar to the Duality. Is the 9000 similar to the 4000 as well? Cheers!
What about taking the pre-amp out, putting it straight into the DAW, then routing output of each track in the DAW to the rest of the consoles channel strip? Wouldn't that allow you to fully mix down on the board?
Yes. I have an SSL 4056. I routinely place my inputs (line or mic) on channels 1-24. I can adjust volume, EQ, Compress, add inserts, etc. I can then go Direct out of each channel to the corresponding "tape" output and "record" in to my DAW's AD convertor (1-24). I select each DAW channel output to 1-24 and those DAW outputs (DA convertor) show up on my SSL's 25-56 inputs. This allows me independent control of both the record inputs and outputs. It certainly makes for quick work in the studio!
So, you're saying (from beginning to 3:29) that in a typical DAW, you can't control final signal output AFTER effects, etc.? Thanks so much.
Hey Warren, If you wanted to simulate the signal flow itb with a summing plugin like Slate VCC, would you put that as your 1st insert, or would it be more accurate to place it on your last insert, post fader so when you pull up Faders you're driving the saturation/console in the plugin as well? Midi faders are really awesome compared to the mouse especially if your recording your own vocal and need to lower the gain. There nothing more annoying then grabbing the mouse when performing lol. I use a Novation Impulse 48 keys comes with 8 channel faders, one master fader, 8 rotary knobs, and 8 drum pads. Automation with the faders or knobs is a lot nicer then the mouse. For some instruments I rarely use my X box 360 controller set on absolute for the triggers and analog sticks for wild automation on filters or FM. There is one plug in FL studios called Fruity X-Y Controller that lets you do that and i herd a guy programed a special plugin for ableton Live so he can use his Power Glove from Nintendo for midi automation lol.

Produce Like A Pro Helping others as much as i can is what i like to do. So many things you can learn in music that effects every side of music or occupation in music. Like for faders it makes work flow easier for the musician, singer or the producer and not just the mixer or mastering engineer. I herd one engineer i believe Andrew Scheps said he only lets his engineer apprentices use faders and not the mouse. I thought it was just a luxury thing till i started automating with the mouse and getting results i didn't want and recording the automations over and over again. Sometimes the mouse works for certain quick automations on an effect,but it's always hard for smooth moves.

Quick question for you. If you're tracking and Mixng through your console, do you use the dynamics and eq on the way in, reset them then mix after coming back in through the line input or would you just track clean with no processing and leave the processing for the "mix" stage?

another thing I've noticed these days is that the computer monitors were in the center of the console, I now realize that many have placed the computer monitor next to the console. is there any technical explanation for this or is it just a matter of taste?

I have recently acquired a mackie tt24 live console and so far I'm loving it but I need something closer to the source such as an SSL. I believe I'm not listening to as much hardware as I would from a traditional SSL but correct me if I am mistaken.
Which version of the SSL console are you using?
