What Joo said completely: *plays* Rachmaninoff's hands are very big.BIG HANDS. *plays* I'm a Korean, so (I have) SMALL HANDS. *plays* But only hands small.
Justme asdf i think the things that make them the same is they’re both classical musician comedic duos, but they have a bit different antics... and instruments
This is so mind bogglingly clever. Joo is a first rate classical musician .... and to be able to have such fun with this signature Rachmaninov is so refreshing and funny. The coordination between these two rascals ... just breathtaking.
@@mendo_aom6675 I'm going to disagree with you in a small way. I think he was referring to brains, but said it knowing full well that a significant portion of the audience would at least temporarily misinterpret it, and that was part of the joke.
Just remembered this today. This video is one of my favorite things ever, I can't believe it's 15 years old now. I remember seeing this at summer music camp when I was in high school and now I'm 30. Half my life ago! It still holds up. Love this piece and love this performance, it makes me laugh and puts a huge smile on my face.
While Joo did change the song a little, he didn't add any extra notes. There actually exists two instances in the song where C# octaves on both hands AND C# minor chords are written to be played simultaneously. Since we're born with only two hands, this is impossible even with Rachmaninov's giant hands; so you play the octaves first (a little ahead of the downbeat) and play the C# minor chord as quickly as one can right on the downbeat.
For everyone who has been asking - the piece is the Rachmaninov Prelude in C-Sharp Minor, Op. 3 No. 2 The middle section was removed for the show, with the outer slow parts making up the piece Igudesman and Joo used.
As a person with considered quite a big hands i can (barley) reach a 12 and i just try and think how big Rachmaninoff hands were that he could've reached A when i struggle with G. but i am still a teen and i do hope that my hands will grow more or at least enough to reach a 13th
The connection with Rachmaninoff really makes sense because in that Prelude, there's the section with massive chords that can't be played simultaneously with 2 hands.
Our organist at Church recommended this video as we had been talking about Rachmaninoff and his big hands! I was very disappointed with it - because it is far too short! It is BRILLIANT. Thank you so much for brightening my day and for brightening many days and nights to come Gentlemen Blessings and peace to you both
Well, we thought it up together. Borge is a huge inspiration for us. but why not go further, right? Really appreciate the positive feedback! And by the way, those chords are exactly as written on the original score...
Very difficult music but beautifully played and quite a novel (not to mention, hilarious) solution for pianists that don't have quite the reach -- which I personally think Rakhmaninov himself would have loved!!
Wonderful, Clever, creative, both of them are great pianists👍And a lot of people and children thanks to this splendid video will start playing piano 👍👍👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I have the original 78rpm of Rachmaninoff's own 3rd recording of the piece from 1926. When time came to use the longest of these wood boards, it felt like he was playing 2 chords at once, as even Rachmaninoff himself needed 2 strikes to play that one chord
Joo is gorgeous. Besides being a fantastic pianist. And to have a sense of humor too. I can hardly stand it. And Igudesman is the perfect foil, with absolutely flawless timing. I'm in awe of this team.
I am reading the comments and I am amazed at the total absence of humor in people. Is it really about the size of Rachmaninoff or Joo's hands? People, get a life... We did a lot of such stuff in our conservatoire days, so I know where this comes from. Love you, guys!

Doesn't depend by the continent, adjectives can be after nouns in many languages, English is rather an exception and does not represent Europe. For example in Italian that could be translated word by word: solo le mani piccole. English is sooo limitative...
@@honguc9577 English adds a lot of fluff to the grammar at some points that really isn't necessary to the understanding of the meaning. From what I know of Asian languages, they don't generally do this. +ThigioBadoni I learned this piece over 10 years ago. I consider myself to have big hands and there are some chords in this piece where i have to hit the bottom note and and move my hand up to hit the top note so quickly that it sounds as if I hit them at the same time. I'd have to dig through my music to find the exact measure, but it's about halfway through the song.
+Max Jacobson Okay, that's very interesting... it would be cool, if you could tell me which part. You may mean the fff part, where you play the C# octaves followed by the C#minor chord. There I also do a jump, but it's also indicated like that in the score I use.
I found a copy of the piece online, but it doesn't list the measures and i'm too lazy to count, but it's before the part that you mentioned. The chord is a low C# to the B next to middle C.
How big are your hands? I consider myself to have large hands and still can't reach it. Don't get me wrong, I play the piece well, but those two notes are played fraction of a second apart.
Rachmaninov could span a 12th with one hand. Incredible. I can reach a 10th reliably unless it's a larger 10th (i.e., the biggest stretch from a white key to a black key). This is one of Rachmaninov's most famous pieces. He eventually regretted having written in because people asked him to play it so often. He wished it weren't so famous.
Would it be too obvious or cliché or culturally insensitive to observe that he doesn't look Jooish? No offense intended, just had to get the pun out of my system. Seriously, this is a very seriously talented and demented team! BRILLIANT would be faint praise.
what makes this joke so classic is that joo applies the "bar" at the beginning of 4 clef part of the piece. it's totally doable even with small hands but at a sight, it is pretty intimidating and makes u go wtf. and im pretty sure im not the only one who felt that way lol
I love this Rachmaninoff piece. I tried to learn it once. Never made it past the first page with the huge chords. After that hand-stretcher the rest was anticlimactic. Great job making it hilarious. -J:

My childhood piano teacher saw Rachmaninov play and said that his reach was unimaginably large!
He was 6'6" and a pianist from childhood, his hands must have been massive!
For everyone who has been asking - the piece is the Rachmaninov Prelude in C-Sharp Minor, Op. 3 No. 2
The middle section was removed for the show, with the outer slow parts making up the piece Igudesman and Joo used.
Actually, strike that. He does play the middle section; it's the first section that is abbreviated.
Thank you!

@@davidsnyder9424 The middle section was also abbreviated
If I remember rightly, I was told Rachmaninoff could reach 13th's, even 14th's on a keyboard! I can reach a 9th comfortably, and that's it.
Me too. 10th is a struggle. 11th is even more challenging. 12 is impossible.
I can barely reach a 9th. The idea of reaching a 13th is crazy
how to make your hand reach 9th,I can only do 8,is there any ways to make your Hands reach more

Man that delay makes each chord hit so much harder. I love their interpretation

I love Korean sense of humour, and, incidentally, they are superb musicians too as seen here...
Bravo, bravo, bravo - great fun and great music!
LOL! To have hands big enough to span a 12th is one thing, but to also be able to hold a 5 -finger chord is quite another feat! He was truly gifted...
