    “Put off your procrastinating for later”. Hahaha! I feel like my life is all procrastinating…. It even helps me get stuff done in a weird way…. I do hobbies when I am putting off doing the dishes. I do the dishes when I’m putting off the gardening. I do the gardening when I’m putting off decorating etc. It’s a vicious circle but at least stuff gets done…. Just not necessarily the “right” thing at the right time haha

    Procrastination is more about failure. If we don't start, than we won't experience failure. Putting it off keeps the dream of being an artist alive. Unfortunately that's where it will stay if we continue to procrastinate, in our minds only. We just need to accept that we could and will fail in the beginning. But from failure comes growth. It'll be slow but at least it's better than no growth at all.

After spending the last 50 years of my life wanting to draw well, and the last 10 years watching people drawing but despair at my few feeble attempts, I finally took the advice in one of your videos. I drew the same items for several days. I just cannot believe the difference….the improvement in just four days. It’s unbelievable. Thank you!

    To force me to use the art supplies I have (the cheapo and the expensiveo), I decided to try that year without buying art supplies. Sometimes it's hard because you seem some supplies you are like "I would really like to try that", but I am thinking "You have so much paints, pencils, pens, paper, etc at home". So for new supplies, I need to just use them :).

    I’m bad about procrastinating. Whether it be woodworking, drawing, honey do’s. I feel I’m not good enough to do the task. But each try helps me to become better. Practice doesn’t make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.

    Ugh I felt this. I bought a Winsor and newton primary colors set after using Reeves gouache that was terrible. The Winsor and Newton were beautiful and I loved painting with them but I put them aside because I thought my art was too crappy for such lovely paint. That was three years ago. The red has already dried out. That makes me sad. But your video has given me a kick in the pants. I’m going to buy a new red and start using that set. No more procrastination. Thank you for the posts & encouragement!! I agree in both cases - Doing = motivation. Waiting = procrastination.
    I used to save the "good" supplies but, then realized it's like discovering a whole different medium - & recently I really like a comment I saw : Why save those supplies for the stranger that will one day buy them for a coin in your estate sale? 🙀 I hadn't thought of that!! I still enjoy making those wonky supply finds (like vintage thrift or those Russian watercolors you described) sing. They are fine to tinker with when I'm just looking for a challenge or something different.

  • @kellyro77
    @kellyro77 2 года назад +4

    I've heard the "too precious" excuse for so long. I agree, those expensive art supplies get rendered worthless if you just shove them in a drawer somewhere and never use them. Another argument to be had about busting out that expensive paper and paint is that you actually get to experience what high quality art materials do. You don't have to struggle with the inexpensive stuff and think you're un-skilled and terrible, because it's not necessarily your skills that are making your artwork look bad, it's the cheap supplies. I tell aspiring watercolor artists all the time that if they're going to splurge on one thing to splurge on the paper. Cheap cellulose paper does NOT perform like quality 100% cotton paper. You cannot blend and glaze on cheap paper like you do the quality stuff. Cheap paper is what makes people think they're terrible at watercolor. Just my .02¢.

    • @SketchBookSkool
      @SketchBookSkool  Год назад

      I have never made a specific video about this, but I’ll be glad to explain. I believe that when you draw with a pen you draw with commitment. You may have to look a little harder, slow down a little bit more, but the line that you put down is the line that you intended. I find that drawing with a pencil is actually drawing with an eraser. It means that there’s always room for correction, revision, perfectionism…. I use pencils in my own work now( after 20 years of developing a confident line) but I avoided them for the many years it took me to develop a Drawing habit and that’s why I recommend the same to other people. If you can draw with confidence with a pencil from the beginning, by all means do so. there’s nothing wrong with pencils, per se. But I think that for me, and for many thousands of people who I’ve instructed, drawing with a pen is a great commitment to make when you are starting out. I hope this answer is helpful.

    This may be a bit sad but procrastinating sometimes means never have the chance to do it because illness sets in. Try it now while you can.

    Have you seen the "Tim Urban: Inside the mind of a master procrastinator | TED". Its an old Ted Talk but its really entertaining. Would be fun to hear you thoughts on it if possible.
