The handle is weak because of the grain orientation at the end and halfway around at the base. And it is distracting. Go under the end and scoop it out with gouges to create handles you can grip. Walnut is nice but you can probably find something like bird's eye maple which is not nearly as porous. Then you can use it unsealed. I would not put a finish on any wood coming in contact with food. In my understanding, if youre going to put a finish on the wood, its counterproductive to sand it past 220 grit. Because the smaller sawdust will plug the pores and prevent finish from absorbing. And for anything im gonna put meat/cheese on... I want it to be well sealed so its easy to clean.

@@natmickan It is a HUGE stretch to call it 'inappropriate behaviour' or 'contributing to the harm of others' when a guy casually remarks "I'm very OCD" about something. I have severe OCD, and I have said this many times, in exactly the way he said it, in order to start a conversation with people who otherwise might be startled or uncomfortable with my ensuing behaviour. Surely, you must be able to at least admit that you have no idea whether he sands the piece for far longer than he ought to, because he's plagued by scenarios in his head involving what might happen if a child swallows a splinter. What IS appropriate in this instance is for you to give the person the benefit of the doubt, because you truly don't know what their head space is. It is not helpful to our cause to be lecturing people on how they ought to speak or not speak about things that affect their lives.
All future children will find tons of charcuterie boards in future thrift stores and look at the them the way all of us used to look at fondue pots. Thank you for all the likes!
It’s rather irksome when people say OCD when they just mean meticulous. Do you obsess and go back over and over and prevent you from living your normal life unless you get the right sand quality? No? Then you are meticulous. Do you have horrific and intrusive thoughts that prevent you from doing basic life functions? Do you have to sand it exactly 144 times with the right grits or it’s ruined and you are a bad person? That’s OCD. Please stop saying that.
Is it really obsessive? Is it really an uncontrollable obsessive behavior? Please don't use OCD unless you're actually OCD. It is not a fun time. It is not simply being a perfectionist. It is not something that makes your life better. It is not something that makes your work better. It is not a good thing.

The bark is to brittle and a few bumps would make it come apart at the natural seam. Then the piece would have a sharp unfinished end. I do get what you’re wanting to see however.
@@johnbagewll2321 it can be done with certain types of wood though, if the wood is slow dried and kept out of the elements. I've had several pieces of Maple and black cherry that retained the bark nicely. And yes the surface of the bark can often be brittle/fragile, but a nice thick coating or three of epoxy resolves that issue. I've also seen it done with a few countertops. I'm not sure how those people cured or dry the slabs, but they also used epoxy to cover the Bark thoroughly, and the end product turned out beautiful.

When I was in wood shop in middle school, we’d made cutting boards and definitely the hardest part was the sanding the handle. We had to sand by hand so I know mine was literally rough around the edges 😂
It's beautiful. My grandpa had all the tools to make stuff like this. I of course never thought to ask him how to use any of them. Though I never would have thought about making something so practical and pretty. When I think of wood working, I think of 2 things. Bird houses and furniture. 😂
Mine too... Sand paper. Sand paper and mineral oil. He had that. Cause, thats all you need to make a piece of wood that a white woman would buy at a ridiculously blown out price.
The problem with stunningly beautiful cutting or serving boards is that they tend to stay in the cupboard because people cant bring themselves to cut on them - or spoil them in other ways...

It looks very cool
That's not OCD. It's perfectionism.
It’s not delivery - it’s DiGiorno [on a $500 charcuterie board].
Great piece man! Love that you care about your work and that slab of walnut was gorgeous!
for $500... that's right, he'd better care...
How many of you in the comment section learned the word Chatoyancy from Justinthetrees?
Everyone lol
@@DaveyFish1 I didn't.
"Here's a 3×12 that's 5 and a half feet long. It weighs 165 lbs, and you can serve fancy cheeses on it. That'll be $500"
I was raised to the 1960s and charcuterie boards were always popular; I still have one that belonged to my Parents.
what are they used for?. Decor?
@@kororma Cutting meat on it?

@@loiwoz what the hell is charcuterie?
Oh, you mean a cheese board! When did they change the name!! 😅
I think people need their heads tested to be paying $500 for a board to put meat on..... the board itself looks 🔥
I was just sbout to write the same comment. Madness. $500 for a plank with an hour or so of shaping snd samding? No way.
I promise you, it’s hours and hours of sanding. And if you go to cut the hole in the handle and something goes wrong, like leaning on the wood handle while using the jigsaw and the handle breaks off! Yeah I did that.what a waste. This guy is a master
@@kellyblodgett3214 Twenty bucks an hour plus the cost of materials is still nowhere near $500
You could have two wedding receptions feeding off that board at the same time.
I need one about 8"×10" 😊 Since I have a slab of black walnut big enough and the tools and no money I'll just need to diy it.
Looks like a weapon you'd see in a Fromsoftware game.
Omg look at that ✨chatoyancy ✨
Just beautiful 😍
✨ *chatoyancy* ✨
I think that board is freaking massive lol
✨️Chatoyancy ✨️
In my understanding, if youre going to put a finish on the wood, its counterproductive to sand it past 220 grit. Because the smaller sawdust will plug the pores and prevent finish from absorbing.
And for anything im gonna put meat/cheese on... I want it to be well sealed so its easy to clean.
"I'm very OCD when it comes to my pieces. If I don't blink my eyes 18 times before each polish, I'm crippped for the next 12 hours while I defacte in my own pants and try to peel my fingernails off."
See, now that's not helpful... How do you know the extent of someone's suffering behind the scenes? I followed another artist who made little comments like that. In retrospect, it was what they were doing to prepare their followers for a big podcast about their journey through OCD, anxiety and depression - which you would never have thought was the case, just from watching them work...
You left the tap on at home you left the tap on at home you left the stove on there's a patch of dirt next to the front door and a shit stain on the toilet
@@BeeOnASunflower853 suffering behind a screen doesn’t give anyone a free pass to contribute to harm of others and go un-checked. There’s nothing wrong with calling out inappropriate behaviour; that’s how people learn & grow

Gorgeous! Too nice to put anything on the board. I could admire it for hours.
That first coat of seal sets a stain off. Love it.
Doesn't look stained at all. That's just how Black Walnut do.
@@i-love-comountains3850 what did he put on it?..oil? Machine oil?
Beautiful!!!
You are not "OCD", that doesn't even make sense
Nothing better than well finished wood
10/10 dude looks perfect to me, and I know for sure it definitely feels perfect 👌
“I’m very OCD with this specific thing” does this guy even know what obsessive compulsive disorder is??
Is it really obsessive? Is it really an uncontrollable obsessive behavior? Please don't use OCD unless you're actually OCD. It is not a fun time. It is not simply being a perfectionist. It is not something that makes your life better. It is not something that makes your work better. It is not a good thing.
i can get behind wanting it smooth. it's like in a 3d modeling program where you can smooth the model more, it's very satisfying
Looks incredible. What type of finish oil did you use?
Shipwreck also Oakland,California fire safety and anatomy of ecology etc.❤

Wow, that is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!! Beautiful work.
Absolutely gorgeous!
I'd absolutely LOVE to have a guitar made out of this wood. That color and grain are gorgeous. And the finish is perfect. Figured black walnut is amazing looking
You are not OCD. That is a mental condition. Wanting perfection in general is not a mental condition. Stop using "OCD" to mean simple things.
Gorgeous. I’m not a fan of warm tones, but that’s just a personal preference. The wood is beautiful and so is your craftsmanship.
Beautiful BUT OUT OF PROPORYION. Handle is too small compared to board size. And too large for home use. Black walnut and cherry are my 2 favori t e American. Hardwoods.😅😅
That's a beautiful board. Love it.
OCD isn’t a cute quirk you can slap on to mean you’re a perfectionist, it’s a debilitating mental illness
Get over yourself
@@wpww3343he's right. You get over yourself. Have you seen the people who can't leave a room until they've flipped a lightswitch 186 times exactly before leaving their room? And if they don't they gotta start over? That's OCD, this is just a guy sanding a board till it's smooth and being satisfied with the result of each level of smooth😂
@@anthonysantos3629 no, i haven't seen that just like i haven't seen a unicorn, because both are made up bullshit. Cope harder in your delusion bubble
chill w| the use of OCD as an adjective; you wouldn't use cancer that way.
Grow up, find real problems to solve.
@@ingGSTake your own advice.
Why do people still say “im very ocd” ? its a disorder not an adjective. Technically saying: “I’m very obsessive compulsive disorder” 😂. Nice attention to detail on the project but not the vocab.
OCD has nothing to do with being a perfectionist. You’re work is good, but please don’t throw around words you seem to know nothing about.
Fabulous. That handle though is going to need some support or it's gonna get snapped.
I promise you there is no snapping this handle haha I’d be willing to bet it could support 500+ pounds
@@ggwoodworks prove it, i was also curious about the strength of the handle
Neat, tidy and passionate about your work does not constitute a compulsive disorder.
Thank you for fixing this diction choice in advance.
Orbital sander left grain damage however very nice turnout with great finish😊
i love the dark tones in the piece because it reminds me of the forest on a piece of wood! Amazing job
Do you ever leave the bark on for your live edge projects?
If so I'd love to see some videos of your work with the bark left on.

Yes like a huge thick coffee table. Not sure about mahogany.

You can have his talent. You make the first one, and each one gets better and better. Make a very simple one and build up to his level. He didn't wake up one day and said hey, Im going to make a board. He started small.
Definitely a piece of art..it is so gorgeous!❤

You aren't OCD. You "have" OCD.
We had a black walnut tree that was poached. Not only is it beautiful, it's valuable.
I absolutely love your design style.
Not hating, but... You know, you could just say "I'm particular". Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a legit mental diagnosis.
Id be proud to hang it on my wall as a feature of Art.
Such a gorgeous wood and board out of it is beautiful
Thank you so much for not ruining it with plastic junk. It's so beautiful 🙌
I cringe whever i hear someone say "im a little ocd"
The problem with stunningly beautiful cutting or serving boards is that they tend to stay in the cupboard because people cant bring themselves to cut on them - or spoil them in other ways...
Beautiful piece. Love these
organic boards.
Organic??? What do you think that means
Man gonna try to charge $500 for cutting a handle into some wood
