    Estonia got quite a good army for its size until russian invasion in 1940 and possessing all equipment into Red Army and Baltic Red Fleet, incl. modern for 1940 submarines. In 1990s russians left estonians nothing.

    Could someone tell me if former soviet army officers were integrated in the estonian armed forces or the officer corps was built from scratch?

    • @quran6145
      @quran6145  7 лет назад +4

      Actually, the Estonian Defence Forces were founded after restoration of independence

    • @adelinod.5568
      @adelinod.5568 7 лет назад +4

      What I meant is whether former estonian soviet officers were integrated in the new estonian armed forces or they have to be trained from scratch in another countries (I heard something about Finland and Germany educating the estonian officers)

      Officer corps consisted of ethnic Estonians, formerly Soviet personnel. For example gen Ants Laaneots (then-colonel/polkovnik) is seen in this video.
      And Estonian president invited Estonian-born US colonel Aleksander Einseln from US Army to build Estonian Defence Forces.
      Actually it was quite bizarre back then, there were basically two colonels who had been on the different sides of Iron Curtain before Estonian independence and started to build Estonian defence capabilities. And of course with some matters they had totally different approach or understanding. But everybody in Estonia respect both, they had seen real combat, gen Einseln unfortunately passed away this year, gen Laaneots retired and is now more or less involved in politics and writes great pieces/opinion articles on Russian war games and so on.

      Most likely they would have recruited new ones, as the Soviet regime was overthrown and the officers would have been more loyal to the old regime.

    The reason why they use a Russian march at 27:08 because Estonia at that time was just 2 years of having of their independence get restored from Soviet occupation they just restored their independence on August 20, 1991 but today they never use any Russian or Soviet March as they successfully reformed their army and join NATO.

    What was the main issue rifle in Estonia at this time? By the looks of it it would seem they’re using either PM md. 90’s or East German MPi-KMS 72’s.
