In the beginning the lyrics are "Belial, Behemoth, Beelzebub, Asmodeus, Satanas, Lucifer". It's neither Latin nor backwards, just a list of names of demons/pagan deities/Biblical monsters & the Devil.
Also note: lyrically speaking, Infestissumam (which is supposed to mean "very/most hostile" in Latin) picks up from where their debut album Opus Eponymous left off. It ended with "Genesis", the birth of the Antichrist, the second album continues from the Antichrist's birth onwards. According to one of the Nameless Ghouls: "Everything on the first record was about a coming darkness, an impending doom. Whereas the new record is about something present, and literally, the new record deals with the presence of the Anti-Christ, the Devil. But subliminally, the meaning of it is more how mankind-- predominantly men-- what they have deemed to be the presence of the Devil, throughout history and even nowadays. And that’s why the record is so fueled with sexual themes and females. That’s basically it, the Inquisition was basically men accusing women of being the Devil just because they had a hard-on for them." So that's pretty much the theme of the album in question. Of course, none of the band members were actually satantists. This is more of a tongue-in-cheek kind of deal.
Ah, One of my absolute favorite Ghost songs. This song is awesome at concerts by the way, the whole croud singing along with the chorus. "Ghuleh Zombie Queen" is also one to check out.
I love watching people react to this song, especially when they listen to the chorus for the first time! You should check the video from the song too, it's... interesting to say the least!
In the outro, if you listen close enough, you can also hear someone whispering, "Can you hear me?" But yes! So glad you guys reacted to Year Zero! It's one of Ghost's best!
This is an awesome song. It is really a song to see live with them, its one of those songs that gets the whole crowd going. Ghost is a very interessting band. Their songs have alot of ways they can be interpreted. One thing, which shows mostly on their first 3 albums, is critism of religion, specially western religion. BUT... from their 3 album and forward, they started to have alot of.. well... sex in their. The song Monstrance Clock, which most takes as a dark mass hymn sort of song, is, infact, about the female orgasm, but very cleverly hidden. On a whole other note, I saw the back in... 2017 I think it was, the show that closed that tour (Gothenburg, in Sweden), and it was played in an amusement park, called Liseberg. 10 000+ people at the show. I remember bursting out laughing, as I realised I dont think that many people have ever beeing singing/screaming "Hail Satan!" in an amusement park, aimed towards families. 😂
Tobias did an interview about trying to find a choirs to sing about Satan and he went to multiple in the Swiss area and they literally cried about it and he ended up finding one state side in California to do it....on a personal note shows the devout in faith
Glad y’all reacted to this song it’s one of my faves from them; whenever it comes on I can’t skip! Same with Con Clavi Con Dio; my favorite song by Ghost!
The beginning chant is : Belial, Behemoth, Beelzebub, Asmodeus, Satanas, Lucifer These are just different names for Satan. BTW: This song is AMAZING live.
The video for the song was interesting. The unrated version features naked female and male parts. The band themselves are not in the video much besides Tobias, who is in two costumes. Year Zero is one of the best tracks from the second album and is always a pleasure seeing it live.
The dancing around the retirement home angle isn't too far-fetched. I'll never forget the sight of four 70-something year old men decked out in Ghost tees and having a blast tailgating in the parking lot of the arena at Hershey, PA in 2019. So freaking cool. Here is vid I shot of "Year Zero" from said show. Get out to see them live if you can guys, they put on a hell of a show. ruclips.net/video/IKQ4h1kdp04/видео.html
@@FlameImperishable Looks like you were put in the hot seat. 😂 Also, I was just think about @11:20 could be a motet? Church had strict rules of counterpoint.
@@FlameImperishable In medieval motets, they used a cantus firmus (or fixed melody), kinda like what you were hearing. They have a discant (additional melody), and a whole bunch of silly interval rules. During the renaissance and into the baroque period is when polyphony was integrated more. On the second rendition I like how you can see him when he’s rocking he’s in it counting… she’s listening and she’s like I like that, then it takes him a bit to speed up. It’s fun and that’s why you guys work
If you like GHOST a react to UNDER THE SPELL by ME AND THAT MAN.. it’s a collaboration with the lead singer of ghost and the lead of behemoth . It’s Nergals side band
Great review guys. Funny yet a good analysis. Having learned this song on guitar, that "helicopter" you mentioned is simply up and down picking on the open E string with a slight delay/reverb. I highly recommend learning some of their songs. It gives you more appreciation for the way he writes songs. Somewhat simple, sure. Yet so much fun.
Not any other band out there can making singing about Satan as catchy as Ghost...its crazy to imagine 10,000 or more people singing along to this chorus..
Hi both. I'm digging your reactions to Ghost. Also checked out Slavebranded and some of Jason's guitar work. Great stuff. Looking forward to your new release. -- Everything in the beginning of the song is spelled forward (tl;dr various names for the devil), "Belial, Behemoth, Beelzebub, Asmodeus, Satanas, Lucifer". If you play a drinking game listening to the first two albums, whenever the devil is mentioned you'll pass out before the end.
Dream Theater did something neat work the choir effect on over of their songs on Systematic Chaos. They actually put out a classified ad for DT fans to sing on the album
Oh that reminds me, when I was in high school, my friend was in the Megadeth fan club and he got invited to do a similar thing on their Risk album. The fans are recorded yelling“Crush’em” on the Song.
The song opens with some of the Devil's names: "Belial, Behemoth, Beelzebub. Asmodeus, Satanas, Lucifer." The title is a play on when the founder of the Church of Satan, Anton LaVey, declared 1966 "Year One A.S. (Anno Satanas), the First Age of Satan." The music was mostly composed by the Nameless Ghoul "Omega" (Martin Persner) with Forge writing the lyrics and arranging the song.
Some of those are non-Satan demons or monsters. In Biblical sense, Behemoth is a powerful animal/creature made by God in the beginning of creation that only he could control. It is paired with the sea serpent creature called Leviathan. Asmodeus is supposed to be the King of Demons who was created by Satan.
@@TECfan1 Yes, you're right, but I was trying to be succinct in my explanation. I didn't feel like breaking down what each name meant. Belial is the demon of lawlessness. Beelzebub is the Lord of the Flies. When the Devil was in Heaven, he was Lucifer, but when he fell, he became Satan. Lucifer is Pride and Satan is Temptation.
I think they're actually saying maybe he's dreaming of something that happens after Christians are going or something like that like it's the year zero the start of something else
I picture a Satanic Oktoberfest Beer Garden during this song, with stocky Germans swaying, sloshing beer, wearing little fake horns and green hats. ••• Thanks! PEACE!!!

The outro on that song is so gorgeous
Yes, please. Deus In Absentia is right up there with Witch Image and From the Pinnacle to the Pit as my all time favorite Ghost songs.
