  • Annwfn is a realm within Welsh Mythology that is often compared to the Greek Underworld, but when you peel back the layers of this Liminal realm, you start to see that it is something quite different.
Join me as we go over what Annwfn (or Annwn) is, some possible theories, a theory of my own, and a brief look at the story of Pwyll & Arawn from the First Branch of the Mabinogi.
What do you think Annwfn is? 🌀🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

My earliest ancestor on record came from Wales in the 1700s though most of my family names Ireland as our origin. I discovered your channel just today and I'm so grateful for your discussions about Welsh mythology and folklore. I can't wait to learn more!

We have Welsh stretching back to around 1700s (at least what we can find in the records), but our Irish line goes back super far! Thank you so much for your kind words- so happy the channel resonates with you 🙏🏼

I became aware of Annwn / Annwyn /Annwfn through the 2005 film "The Dark" starring Sean Bean. Definitely worth a watch. Real hidden gem of a film.

Thank you for making this marvelous video! I really appreciate learning more about Annwfn. It's a name and a realm that has always haunted me and called to my heart and imagination, ever since I was a child.
My own theory is that it is a very real place, located in another "loca" or plane of parallel existence and consciousness to our own experiential world. This is not to say that physically embodied people cannot or do not go there at times. I think that gateways or portals exist which may open only at certain times between the worlds, or perhaps they may be traversable if one knows the right form of magic, or is gifted with the visionary acuity to see the subtle world of energy, beyond the normal ken of mortals.
I honestly think that there may be many worlds, accessible from different points on our planet, or perhaps there is one main "otherworld" that is a globally available cognate to our own. Native Americans, Africans and especially the Irish, all have rich folklore involving a parallel world, and all of the stories I've learned over the years have an eerie similarity when describing this world, and the methods by which it may be accessed.
In our modern time, I'm sure you may be aware, great attention is being given to unexplained human disappearances, and in some of those cases the disappeared persons have returned to our world. They tell of lost time, or time distortion; they tell of suddenly finding themselves in unfamiliar terrain, with no visible pathway back to the place they had been only moments before crossing over. They tell of strange -looking animals and plants, or stranger still- of people unlike ourselves. They tell of people with strange clothing, speaking in strange tongues, and of people much taller or much smaller than most people are in our world.
I believe it to be possible that these returnees from the otherworld, even the people who disappear and reappear on other continents, may in fact be experiencing visits to the same place that is known in Wales as Annwfn, and in Ireland as Tir na nOg. Or I could be totally off base, of course. (I also agree completely with your theory about vast subterranean worlds. That too may be the answer... or maybe both are true somehow?
Lovely stuff, altogether. Thanks again. Beannachtai ort, agus Slan go foill. --Naomi

    This vid was awesome!!!
    Thank you.
I've watched your friends channel and she is lovely as well as you.
I've just started my journey with Cerwidwen and Cernunnos, so far it's been interesting because I've wanted to connect with what I like to term as The Wild Father and The Wild Mother and they were who showed up.
I am very interested in seeing the unfolding of your channel as well as her channel you both seem to have a great deal to offer.
Many blessings and I hope you have a good day.

Of course I know. I was doing camping in the north of France, spending days alone in the wilderness near the coast. If you can meditate you may "see" and "hear" a lot of little folk and strange creatures. Then as you open up some may come to your dreams and further guide you. Annwn is a name for antoher frequency of what we call reality, like variations between the notes in the partition.

Do you have any recommendations for books that you have personally read or have been told of that were good about goddess Cerwidwen?
Also do you know of any good books that are specifically about the place that your vid is about?

    • @the_liminalwitch
      @the_liminalwitch  3 дня назад +1

Honestly the BEST book about Cerridwen specifically would be Cerridwen by Kirstoffer Hughes in my opinion. The whole book is about her 🙏🏼
Another book that will help you understand Annwfn better would be Welsh Witchcraft by Mhara Starling. She is a Welsh witch who grew up in North Wales on Ynys Môn where and she grew up with the tales of the Mabinogi- she's an amazing source for Welsh Folklore from a more experienced mind!

@@11regnartseht I'm very familiar with Missing 411! I wouldn't say Annwfn is connected to Missing 411- that's more centered around National Parks. I could see a theory being strung together like that, but Annwfn is very exclusively a land tied to Wales, not anywhere else in the world
