The US military provides more mental health support to their current and former members than anyone could possibly want. This attack, and the one in Vegas were not a result of a lack of funding for military/veteran mental health services at all. Anyone who is, or was in the military should know that they have 24/7 access to some of the highest quality mental health services offered in the world for absolutely free. Most people just don't use them. These were people who knew what they wanted to do and did it. Even if they had mental illnesses, they obviously weren't going to get help to stop them from doing what they wanted to do. Furthermore, I don't think that these attacks were related to any mental health problems caused by military duties, and even so, the military would still provide countless services for non-duty related mental illnesses. It's pretty clear that these people's actions were purely the result of their own personal agendas. No mental health service offering in the world can prevent people from doing what they want to do.
But they can be used to surveil vulnerable populations, such as veterans. And thus prevent such acts. Anyway, we need to know more about the attacker to learn about his motive.

I didn't expect them to shut down bourbon st any longer than they deemed necessary. The french quarter is the cities main attraction. They must reopen if it is safe to do so. What do y'all expect them to do? Cities don't just stop running when something like this horrific tragedy occurs. Those businesses rely on holidays and events to survive. It's not insensitive. It's the party capital of the South. Y'all don't say anything when other more affluent cities like NYC or Las Vegas continue their business as usual after a terrorist attack.
