  • Harvard graduate Joelle Tamraz, was young, enthusiastic and a perfect target for a fake yoga guru. Seeking enlightenment, purpose and peace, she came across a man who swept her off her feet and used spiritual manipulation to eventually exploit her and her family out of thousands of dollars. He told wild stories of channelling and inhabiting someone else’s body to justify cheating right in front of her face. Find out how after 18 years, despite having built a yoga studio together, she was able to see through it all and escape his clutches.

I've met two men (both were married to others, btw) who hinted strongly that they somehow knew/remembered that I was their wife (or soulmate, one of them didn't say wife, but used a Japanese term for soulmate) in a former life - and one of them also said i would be married to him in my next life, so in a way I was his wife, even now (mostly he would just hint and hint, but at one occasion he spoke very directly about the next life). I didn't have an intimate relationship or seggs with any of them (and I really tried not to send flirtatious signals, as they were married), but I was somewhat duped, and emotionally affected, since I was so lonely and vulnerable when I met them (this was 15 years apart). And while I didn't know if I should believe that what they were saying was really the case or not, I thought they really believed it themselves. And a part of me really wanted to believe them, since I was so lonely.

It can be a part of preventative care to keep one healthy aka to keep the body moving , basically taking care of one's mind and body , The whole concept of gaining super powers is just preying on vulnerable people in difficult situations and definitely a distraction .But also with the commercialisation of yoga in the various parts of the world, there has been an increase in popular yogi gurus who are financial and psychological abusing their members . There are creating large cults in various parts of the world including India . They have these large ashrams and they start becoming " GOD " whereas yoga isn't about religion neccessarily . I don’t get the vibe about patriarchy that you do though. I’ve met my share of miserable women in a position of authority more times than I’d like to admit. According to the renowned Indian yoga master, Patanjali, yoga is (in English translation for those who don't know sanskrit):" The removing of the fluctuations of the mind."
Now, as a trained yoga teacher who once lived in a yoga ashram under the guidance of an Indian yoga master, let me clarify.
Yoga means "Union." Union of what?
Union of body, mind, emotions, spirit. It is NOT a religion. It is a "spiritual science." YOU (the practitioner) are the scientist. Your body and mind are the laboratory in which you run your experiments (yogic practices), and your results are the where you find out the truth of what it is.
It starts with the recognition of yourself as an extension of the "Greater Self." (Creator of the Universe, Supreme Being, God -- by WHATEVER name you choose to use to describe that BEING).
You are a particle, a portion, a spark of the Divine.
The PRACTICE of yoga -- which by the way has different approaches (BODY approach: hatha yoga, which involves doing yoga postures. MIND: jnana yoga; which involves mainly meditation on; kriya yoga, which involves many types of practices designed to bring balance and harmony into the body; karma yoga, which is service-oriented -- Think Mother Theresa and her nuns service; bhakti yoga, which is the path of devotion and involves chanting -the names of God - think the Hare Krishnas, Raja yoga, the path of discernment of what is truth and non-truth.
The ULTIMATE AIM of yoga is to purify the body and mind (by removing the fluctuations of the mind) so completely, that we are AT ONE (Achieving YOGA) with EVERYTHING and ALL THAT IS.
That so-called "Yogi" did a complete "Mind-F--k" on this woman. It is NOT and NEVER HAS BEEN about the nonsense he spouted.
In fact, CELIBACY is one of the MAIN practices for one who wants to reach THE ULTIMATE AIM OF YOGA IS UNION WITH GOD.
It is about purifying both body and mind and involves PRACTICING a body of MORAL GUIDANCES.
The five YAMAS -- according to Patanjali are NON-VIOLENCE, TRUTHFULNESS, NON-STEALING, BRAHMACHARYA (purity in all things and means CELIBACY for non-married people), NON-GRASPING (or non-greed).
The 5 NIYAMAS -- according to Patanjali are practices that can be considered INNER observances. They are PURIFICATION (cleanliness of body, mind, speech), CONTENTMENT (letting go of cravings), ASCETICISM (self-discipline and willpower), SELF-STUDY (the practice of introspection and scriptural study), SURRENDER TO GOD (dedicating one's work to a higher power and dissolving ego-focused desires.
Most Americans practice "YOGA" from a very limited understanding of Eastern philosophy.
Because we are not a monolithic society regarding spirituality -- like in India (In fact, Hinduism is really a WAY OF LIFE, a PHILOSOPHY, not a religion like we are taught). Certain concepts are INTERTWINED IN EVERY ASPECT OF A HINDU'S LIFE. You cannot convert to Hinduism -- specifically because it is not really a religion like we are taught.
The best a westerner can do is ADOPT the principles and practices of yoga.
American -- with our focus on FREEDOM -- are ALL OVER THE PLACE REGARDING SPIRITUALITY. We are raised in separate boxes: Catholicism, Protestantism (with all its multitudinous branches), Judaism, Jehovah's Witnesses, Ba'Hai, Islam, Unitarian, Unity, Agnosticism, Atheism, I-Don't-Know-What-I-Am-ism, etc.
When we study "YOGA," we bring ALL of our MIS-guided understandings to what we THINK we are practicing when we talk about having studied yoga.
In India, Holy men can walk around in public stark naked, covered in ash, carrying their begging bowls, chanting the names of whatever Hindu avatar they worship. Nobody -- even small children will bat an eyelash, because they are recognized as men who are established in God-consciousness. They are perceived as being ABOVE and BEYOND the mundane feelings of shame about the human body.
You try that here, you get arrested for public indecency. We have the Puritans as our early American forefathers.
I lived in a yoga ashram for close to 12 years under the guidance of an Indian guru.
We were vegetarians, celibate, slept on mats on the floor instead of in beds, and sat cross-legged on the floor to eat our meals in silence.
We practiced "social silence" -- speaking only purposefully, on-point, and sparingly. We got up at 4:00am 7 days a week. We went outside to walk or jog before doing yoga postures and meditation. Then we ate our meals. We rotated in turn to perform all the community chores: cleaning, laundry, meal-prep, dish crew. Meal preparation was conducted amidst Hindu chanting -- in order to raise the vibration of the food, prepared in love.
We were given yoga teacher training and taught classes in the surrounding community. We got together in the evenings with our guru for devotional chanting and spiritual teachings. We ran programs for the general public who were interested in yoga and spirituality. We offered services such as massage, energy balancing, healthy lifestyle, and R & R programs.
The entire community meditated at 9:00 pm and it was lights out at 9:30 pm. We got Sunday afternoons off for our free time. We did not have radio, tv, newspapers, magazines at our disposal. Men and women (except married couples) sat on separate sides of the chapel for services and yoga classes.
No personal conversations (i.e. hanging out) were allowed between male and female. Those of us who were there long-term took vows of poverty, chastity, and silence for varying lengths of time. Eventually, some took life-time vows as monks.
I had left a career position at Harvard, sold all of my worldly possessions, and jumped into a celibate, vegetarian community; got trained as a yoga teacher and had to deal later with the shock of finding out later that our teacher couldn't keep his hands off female "white meat" too.
He was eventually found out when one of the women cracked up and confessed. l There was a big scandal, and he was forced to resign.
Fortunately for me, I am black, so I did not have to deal personally with being an object of desire for someone who was raised in a caste system, but wasn't as enlightened as he hallucinated. I think I was always a shudra (low caste).
I was connected to that community for close to 20 years including the pre and post residency years.
I had left a career position at Harvard to move into that community, and there was no going back to being re-entered into the Ivy League world.
Unlike this woman, I dove into the yogic lifestyle head-first and milked it for all it was worth. I don't do anything half-assed, and I was a renunciate monk from day one. I studied the various Hindu scriptures, I chanted my heart out, our prayed unceasingly in all that I did, I taught yoga classes, I did all my service-oriented chores with gusto and fervent gladness.
I am a Chiropractic Physician now, and it took some years of adjusting back into the "real world," but I did it. I would do it all over again if I had to, because there are gems, diamonds, pearls, and rivers of gold embedded in the practice of yoga if you do it PURELY AND COMPLETELY.
BOTTOM LINE: YOGA IS ABOUT PURIFICATION OF BODY, MIND, EMOTIONS and REALIZING WHO YOU REALLY ARE AS A PIECE OF GODY TEMPORARILY EMBODIED, and HAVING A TEMPORARY EARTHLY EXPERIENCE. YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO GET BACK HOME TO UNION (YOGA) WITH YOUR CREATOR. Anything else that is taught is a bastardized version of it. It is so sad that so many took what is a system of ALIGNMENT WITH TRUTH and PERVERTED IT, and PACKAGED for gullible Westerners FOR THEIR OWN GAIN.
    SO SAD.
I got ALL the benefits of yoga, and they have served me well in my guidance and teaching of my chiropractic patients on how to live a balanced, clean, wholistic life. It now comes naturally; and I am able to draw upon that holy experience to remain balanced in all that I do in my life.
This woman's experience was unfortunate and painful, but that is not because yoga is evil or bad. She just got-side-tracked from realizing its life-enhancing, spirit-uplifting beauty.
BY THE WAY, A LOT OF PEOPLE FROM INDIA DO NOT KNOW MUCH -- IF ANYTHING ABOUT YOGA. The reason is that -- IN ITS PURE FORM --it is AN ADVANCED SPIRITUAL PRACTICE THAT WAS NOT AVAILABLE TO THE MASSES FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS.
ONLY BRAHMINS (the highest caste people) could practice it. Yogis usually taught only a handful of disciple who were serious, because it was an arduous path that required leaving one's family to go apply the austerities that required total devotion to finding ONENESS (YOGA/UNION) with GOD. One had to leave the material world behind.
It later became popularized and extended to the masses both in India and abroad.
It has been polluted, adulterated, manipulated, truncated, miss-mashed. It's no wonder westerners are afraid of it. IT MOST DEFINITELY IS NOT NEW AGE. IT IS THOUSANDS OF YEARS OLD. IT JUST WASN'T AVAILABLE TO "ORDINARY" PEOPLE, WHO WERE CONSIDERED BY YOGIS TO BE SPIRITUALLY UNREADY, UNFIT, AND TOO IMMATURE TO PRACTICE IT.

Because I'm not religious but always find cult stories relatable is a theme I feel underpins these stories is: how our brains can trick us....when you think you are part of something wonderful, but then figure out you're not. Really hope you keep going with your content.

I know a few people who were involved in non Jewish/Christian cults. And their stories are so similar. In my own life i have had similar experiences with controling, manipulative, charismatic predators who were not cult leaders. They can be anywhere in society. After i graduated from college and was working my first job, i rented a garage apartment. The owners sold their home to a cult leader. When i went to pay my rent, he took me inside the house and showed me the "Pyramid Room" where the cult members(all women!) Sat around a pyramid naked. He tried to recruit me that day. I was so creeped out thst i packed up my things and moved out as soon as i could get another apartment. Currently i am dealing with a new friend who is showing signs of abusive narsacism. After months, i am realizing the early red signs.

I read the book. It was a very fascinating read. I’m so sorry you went through this. It reminds of the Premka book. Similar themes of being around a charismatic Indian guru type and being completely betrayed by Yogi Bhajan of Kundalini Yoga. It happens slowly over time so it’s hard to realize how one finds themselves in a trap.
It’s not a case of stupidity. Thousands of people in the US found themselves victims to yoga teachers. It’s happened with almost all of the different teaching schools. I felt
I experienced similar predatory behavior from mystical men in Mexico and India. It was online, so I was able to break it off after several months.
There are huge cultural differences that create some of these problems.
For instance, people from India don’t fall for these cons because they have experience with these types of personalities who brag about incredible spiritual abilities. They pay them no mind.
Americans didn’t have enough discernment because this is new.
    Now we Americans are wiser.
I don’t understand why schools like Harvard don’t teach their students to be more careful of conmen preying on women.
She went there while doing a grant study for Harvard. They
did not prepare her for this culture. She needed an advisor.
She knew enough not to travel by herself in India by that was not enough.
I’m grateful that Joelle has the courage to write about this. She is helping for many people to not take these risks.
I’m surprised there are so many negative and cruel here about the writer. It takes a lot of courage to share about these experiences. This type of shaming and judging is why most people don’t say anything. Then the cycle continues to happen.
Please let’s encourage people not shame them for their experiences in these cults!

what I love so much about you, Joelle, is that even with these surely often painful and dark times behind you, you laugh. You even laugh about yourselve. Thats feels so good to me!
This is much more strenght and bravery, than any of the gurus, cult leaders and what-nots ever showed. The true hard work of challenging everything you know and think you are and be real about it all. thats something these people could ever hardly do, I imagine.
I often tend being too harsh with me, and on bad days taking things personal, so laughing about my self without shame or anger is sometimes hard. But being able to do so and to see the humour, makes sometimes everything else so much easier.
It´s so good to see you were able to integrate all these big things, all these lies and deceptions and mistakes and laugh about it. It seems you forgave and love yourself. And this is huge!
And all the best to you and your partner! It truly sounds like you found a person deserving and giving back your love and devotion, as you deserved.

I live in a very small rural town in CA. Back in the 90's a guru set up shop in town. At first it was just yoga classes, then he started introducing cult techniques. He counseled couples and broke them up. He was always saying " you may ask me questions, but you may not question me." He was incredibly pompous, with long salt and pepper hair, and the finger nails on his pinkies were two inches long. He looked like an Indian guru but we eventually found out he was a New York Jew., And a former shoe salesman. We found out he'd been chucked out of the LA yoga scene. A total guru schmooroo. After awhile he wanted people to do private sessions with him. he'd have people take their clothes off and sit on his lap naked. Supposedly returning one to the child self. Then he started an invitation only, naked yoga class. All these naked women doing dead bug pose, while he walked around in his black tight fit underwear. It was the talk of the town.

These master manipulators/predators are always looking for the innocence of empathetic people who will be ready to please someone they admire/care about. Also, they play with emotional vulnerabilities in regard to their targets' trouble relationships with their parents in childhood; those original wounds which lots of people carry inside unresolved. So, those manipulators play the parental figure who will fill that void, will be that savior, the protector, the answer for all the pain. He was constantly complaining, making demands, threw his recycling in the garbage, hit the ceiling with a broom (marke are still visible) when my neighbours were "too noisy" instead of going upstairs to talk like a mature adult... he quickly became a liability when he went above my head and tried to convice the landlord to let him stay longer than our written agreement, pretending I was ok with this! She is about 20 years older than me and in her 20s was very involved in the new age and yoga etc. We both still love yoga etc. So this was the late 60s her story took place. Her friend met a man who said he was a swami. They married, moved to India, where he was from, and a few years later he murdered her. That story never left my mind. So yes Noelle potentially was in a lot of danger. Her mom was right. People who practiced it and later on converted to Christianity had manifested demons and they had to undergo exorcisms

After experiencing and emerging from both the dark sides of religion and spirituality, all I have to say is: hold onto your own power. Don't relinquish your power to any religious leader or spiritual guru. Don't fall for the tricks of religious or spiritual con artists from any source. In simple terms, beware of wolves in sheep's clothing.
It saddens me that Joelle Tamraz returned to organized religion because, from my personal experience, it's essentially the same thing.

Like always: Thank you for this video and your great work!
The esoteric scene is dangerous in several ways. I met esotericists in management consulting > 10 years ago at my previous employer in Germany. Manipulation and even brainwashing were their standard tools. It was a married couple. The man was a trained psychologist (Diplom-Psychologe), the woman described herself as a psychologist but was significantly less trained. Critical thinking was banned and psychotherapeutic methods were abused to create a tight-knit group of managers who were supposed to act as multipliers within the company. After three years the damage was not minor, but I managed to throw the two charlatans out.
It's always amazing that even simple logic is turned off. An example: “Don’t tell the people what they shouldn’t do!” Tell you what you should do!” When asked why, the answer was: “Because the brain is not able to process the word ‘not’.” Any questions?

I've definitely had this experience where my manager brought a couple in to "train" his team and biy was it pseudoscience galore. The guy kept going on about how impressed we'd be when we'd meet his wife, but she was incredibly underwhelming. I wonder if the hyping was to cover up for her lack of charisma. They quizzed us to find our enneagram types then used that to explain and excuse any wrong doing our boss had done. An absolute joke and waste if time and money...

My disrespect for their nonsense provoked them to the point where they made mistakes. I also analyzed their actions carefully, wrote a lot of paper and convinced my management colleagues and our bosses. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it and I learned a lot about the dangers of esoteric management consultants.

I had my near death experience at 8 years old. I was connected with the Divine consciousness, love, blissful energy. I saw all souls connection between each other and with him.He is the only Guru,an real source, and we are connected with him forever. Never fallow anyone who pronouns him self as a Guru, ore act out of Ego or power. We live in a time when all fake Gurus will get there rewards. Future is about something really amazing. I got a lot of hidden knowledge but I am not teaching anyone else than my self out of respect for everyone else. We are all masters of our lives. The most you help others without ego,the more you get.

Truly enjoyed this amazing tale!! Joelle expressed herself so well and brought the story to life. There are evil exploitive people in the world and unfortunately we sometimes become their victim. I am very happy Joelle has come full circle and found her peace!! Great program!!!

Yogic flying is jumping, seated, with your butt. There's some pretty amusing photos of Shoko Asohara "demonstrating" this feat, it looks super uncomfortable. I'm all about unique experiences but I always side-eyed this one
