💥EMG Les Claypool Signature "Pachyderm" Pickup - Demo/ Review
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 фев 2025
- My demo and review of the Les Claypool Signature pickup from EMG pickups. The Pachyderm is a Precision pickup with the new Metal Works brushed gold finish. It's different from the classic EMG P pickup, having an Alnico Magnet instead of the traditional ceramic magnetic. This gives a warmer, and more classic tone, but with all the clarity you would expect from an active pickup.

Came for the demo, stayed for the shirt! Keep up the great content. Best bass on RUclips.
I recommend both! Thanks for the good word.
Great Jam at the start. Perfect sound and tone shaping to go with an amazing performance... nice job, now I want those pickups in my P basses... mission accomplished. Love the show, thanks for your time...
Glad you enjoyed it, always appreciate the good word, Danny.
These pickups are great! I have a set in my Spector Euro. I'm running them with an Aguilar preamp and they sound FAT!!! You're absolutely right about the clarity these have. They also look really cool if your bass has all gold hardware. I would highly recommend especially if you're a slap player.
I assume you’ve got a PJ setup on a Euro? What bridge pickup are you running?
Low end lobster mentioned these P pickups in a recent video. I'm standing in my kitchen thinking about them, and bang! This video pops up in my updates. Thanks. That couldn't have worked out better
Glad to be of service!
thanks for this demo and the insight Rodney, dug the MOP Woodstock '94 rip too!
Glad you recognized it!
@@RodneyMcG for sure brother, killed it! they just released (or announced) other colors covers for the Trujillo jazz sets (chrome & brushed chrome), hoping they do the same with these but if not, gold it is, they (and you) sound great. Thanks again and be safe out there brotha
I'd like to see that too. I have the OG Trujillo black chrome, and they are pretty sexy! Be safe as well my friend, all the best.
Thanks for the demo, Rodney. I really like the note definition of the pickup, and you demoed it well, by showing how the attack (more or less aggressive) would change the sound.
Thanks. Chris - glad you enjoyed it.
That was useful, thank you. You have a succinct and articulate review. I think I'll pick up a set. I've been waffling between these and the GZR for my current mahogany coffee table telecaster bass build. Gold dual lipstick tappable humbucker in the neck. Still deciding if I wanna route a bridge pickup
When you're looking for ideas to mod a short scale Pbass and outta nowhere you hear a song from Tony Hawks Pro Skater you'd long forgotten about. Less than 2 minutes in the demo and I'm sold =D
Those pickups got more than enough mid for everybody 😂. Great video as always.
I would agree!
I was just thinking how I didn't want to wait for Monday for a word from Uncle Rodney! Thanks for this review!! I've been highly intrigued since your teaser in the FB group. I am now secretly conspiring how I might score a set! Definitely giving me some modding things to think about. I really dig your clean tone today (your tone is always great tho 😉)! I am very curious how the bridge and combined positions sound. Thanks for the vid today!!
😃👍
I think they are releasing soon, so you should be able to grab them shortly. Thanks for the good word on the clean tone. I actually didn't do anything to it. That's the pickup, straight in, no eq!
@@RodneyMcG I love it when that happens.
@@RodneyMcG also, now I think about it I recall you saying when you demo stuff for us you will run as direct as possible. Really appreciate that. So, now you know you have a killer bass for running clean/direct. Would be fun to hear some dirt on it, but I'm sure that'll be coming.
Well done, my friend......WELL done. Oh, and by the way, my daughter thanks you for making me find the "Iron Mando" shirt!
😂😂🤘 Kudos to your daughter! This is the way.
I plan on using this pickup
Hells yeah, sick intro. Primus sucks, though.
Indeed, they do!😉
Primus fucking sucks 🤘🤘
Just found your channel. Great videos here. Good playing is half the battle for the tone.
I'm liking this emg too
Welcome aboard James. Thanks for watching.
Very nice growl. It's a little more polite than other Ps you have shown us. That of course is relatively speaking.
This is probably a dumb question, but I've only in the last year finally gotten into playing bass and my four-string is an old 1997 Ibanez SR800. It's active with four knobs, but the pickups don't really sound that great to my ears and so I've wanted to switch them out for about as long as I've owned it. EMG is what I keep coming back to, since I like the way their pickups sound and the ease with which they can evidently be put in is appealing, but I cannot for the life of me find worthwhile videos of people switching out the pickups in any Ibanez basses. Well, I know that's not an Ibanez but that's where my question comes in.
Did you install these pickups yourself, and what did you do in order to preserve the four knobs on your bass? Are they all functional?
I wouldn't worry about finding specifically Ibanez. The pickups are going to sound the same across most bases. As far as the knobs on my bass I usually bypass the preamp on most basses I have so the sound you're hearing is the pickup with no additional coloring. I like simple setups on my bass, because my pedal board is complex enough!
@@RodneyMcG So not all the knobs necessarily work?
Also, you can do that with active pickups? Is that why so many bassists say that a pre-amp pedal is essential?
Correct. I usually just have two volume controls. Can't Tell You Why other bassists might say they need preamps. You would need to ask them.
@@RodneyMcG Huh. Kinda' makes me think you could pull off a Lee Sklar 'producer switch' trick with those knobs. As for the pre-amps, everyone that I've heard talk about it just says it's critically important because it boosts the volume after going through other pedals or something. I never understood the point, and feel somewhat vindicated that you don't care for them too much yourself.
Well, thank you. This has been incredibly helpful. As much as I feel like I should ask for general advice, that's a bit vague, and you've helped me plenty already. For whatever it's worth I want to wish you the best.
Thanks, glad I could be of some help and best of luck with your gear choices and experiments!
Nice pickup set. Seems they would fit in a humbucker position with a plastic blank to fill the holes. Like the bridge with the pickups too. Cheers!!
Good job man
Hey man, great JAM 🔥
I have a question for you… Which pickups would you recommend for a Les Paul bass and for the Korina Explorer bass?
That's going to be limited to form factor as they aren't standard sizes. I think you'll have to measure the size of the current ones and go from there.
Have you got any videos of this guitar using both Claypool pickups? Would love to know how that sounds!
Not that particular set, but a number of my videos have EMG double P setups in them
so awesome you did this video. I'm planning on replacing my hellraiser extreme 4 two 35tw's to 35p4x's.
Excellent choice
That intro was awesome. Please do a full review of these pickups with this configuration. I'm building a bass with a double P config, but the bridge pickup is reversed. Thanks👌
I'll see what i can do
Awesome jam and review! I've been thinking of getting those myself recently. I was wondering, what model bass is that in this video? It looks so badass! Anyway, great video as always. Rock on!
Thanks! It's a Schecter Avenger. It was done custom for me, but the Dale Stewart signature is pretty close to this one.
noticed in the beginning you've got a powerhouse traditional mesa bass cab! is that the 810 or 412? i own 6 diesel cabs currently and actually have a powerhouse 412 on the way, super stoked, itll be my first powerhouse cab
The 4x12 is by far my favorite. Just crushing
What model is that Avenger? A Dale Stewart? I just noticed you swapped from soap-bars to the double p's.
It's a custom that was built for me based on the Dale Stewart model
@@RodneyMcG very nice. How much did it run you?
@@zackyallen2713 it was part of an endorsement
Slap doesn't belong in thrash. Watches RMcG slap MoP riff. Rethinks my life.
😂😂🤘
slap belongs everywhere my friend
😂🤘
Believe it or not, Master of Puppets is what Primus closed off their Woodstock '94 performance with, which is why he played it.
@@elansleazebaganno That's what i was kind of referencing
They should make a j pickup to match in brushed gold
Primus on frets...Metallica slapped? You are outta control...
and I love it! Primus sucks!
Much appreciated! And indeed, they do 😉🤘
@@RodneyMcG Can't wait to hear how both p/ups sound together...looking forward to it!
And just this week I put new emgs in my old Hohner Bass
Nice! Original set?
@@RodneyMcG still had 1 original pup in the neck pos. the bass has flatwounds so it's odd, but soo S Harris lol
Ooo- that's interesting!
Always great, in the precious metals video it said "pachyderm basses with emg" think it could be a possible allusion to the Pachyderm basses actually being produced?
Hmm, interesting. It does sound like it.
Been meaning to ask this question for awhile what model schecter is that does it come standard with double p configuration?
There isn't one. I modified it myself. If you look close you can see where I covered parts of the original route with black plastic covers
Great review Rodney. Question; in your opinion, what EMG active Jazz set of pups would provide a very modern sound? I currently have EMG Jazz pickups with the poles exposed and I believe they are from 1997 (I bought a used Modulus and that's whats in it). Thank you.
GOtcha, I think you have teh JV series. If you want the most hifi / modern version, i'd probably go with the JX set.
@@RodneyMcG Right on. I appreciate it!
I like the sound of that pickup, ive been keeping emg on my radar more lately since i got the p5ax in my 5 string esp, its quite a pickup with the 18 volt mod. Id be rather interested in a comparison between that les claypool model and the pax pickup. I am thinking about trying the duncan lightning rods, have you had any experience with those?
No experience on the duncan. The claypool and the pax will be the ax is a little less compressed and will sound like it has a bit more extended highs.
@@RodneyMcG interesting, in my experience with the pax it gets a really nice steve Harris kind of tone
It's all how you dial it in. You could probably get the same with the PA, but you would just need to add a bit more treble for those extended highs
@@RodneyMcG it seems that way and the metal cover looks really slick, i could see it right at home living in a pimpsuit purple bass withgold hardware, the projects pile up quick
😂indeed they do!
Damn dude THAT TOAN!!!!!
Looks cool, sounds amazing I need that shit (even though my bass does not have P pick ups)
If you have a soapbar style, you can get the EMG PA in that shape and get the same sound.
Lowend lobster mentioned a DC style pickup , what is that? Trying to find a nice aggressive 5 musicman emg that will work with the emg bqc preamp in a Sterling
Not sure. Maybe that was his impression of the tone? The Nordstrand is the only kind on that bass.
welp, i thought i knew what pickups i wanted until i watched this and had to rethink
Hope the added confusion ends in a killer new pickup choice😃
@@RodneyMcG oh you most DEFINITLEY made me want to get a set of these now. :3
If you grab a set, report back with how you like them. Good luck!
Do you have the wiring diagram for double P configuration?
It is the same as the PJ set
Man what is that bass called? I remember it's a Schecter but can't remember the name of it haha. Thing is absolutely gorgeous.
It's called an Avenger. It was a custom model I had made a few years back.
Sounds great, but I'm not too big on active pickups.
Thanks for this review! Would you say that tapewounds would sound good on this?
Thanks for checking it out. That would be completely up to taste. I don't use them myself, but if that is your vibe, I don't see why they wouldn't. I think the extra clarity would help out on something with a darker string tone in all likelyhood.
just found this video thanks for the demo and info! i only know the geezer butler p set....which one would you prefer for a classic p bass? the geezer butlers or these les claypools? been thinking about putting them in my vintera preci....thx
That's a tough one. It heavily depends on what you really like in overall character. The safe bet would be the Geezer as it's based on a 62 Fender pickup.
Are these pickups easy to use as a ramp like the Relentless Dimarzios?
Any split P set will get you the same result
Wonder what they'd sound like with flat wounds?!?😮
How would it sound for rock? (I.e. heavy distortion/fuzz and played with a pick?)
The last metallica example is probably a good example
Mate, you running 18 or 9v?
9v
Nice Pickups, can’t wait to get my own,PRIMUS SUCKS
Is this a passive pickup?
Active
The name is Mickey; and he’s looking for a babysitter.. He’ll pay 💰 $250 a day..
Watching this guy play primus os very painful
It's always painful to see somebody that can do things you can't do. Don't worry, just practice harder. I have faith in you.
I am Danny Newcastle, my other channel was deleted for speaking truth about election fraud and the mental gymnastics it takes to believe the narrative. That bass looks so good with those pups. Hope you're well and you made the move successfully since we last spoke. AmaZing playing as always. ✌️
Hey Danny - Good to see you. That's a bummer on the channel. It seems to be going around. The move went great, much happier. Hope things are good with you, and thanks as always for the kind note on the playing.
@@RodneyMcG things are shit in UK. Boris is a tyrant and people are sheep. It's like no one even read 1984. Anyways we know about that shit. It's been easily 10 months since we last spoke. I have some content to catch up on. You were about to do a full recording tutorial. I'm gonna look at your patreon/patrion? Don't know how it works but it's good to give back. Glad the move was successful mate. Take care. I'm off to binge watch your channel now hahhaha.
Sorry to hear it's nuts over there too. As far as recording, I'm starting at the beginning with how to create music, songwriting, etc. The engineering will be in about 2 more episodes. Hope you have some fun in the back issues!
