Bought these for backup hurricane communication since I can't communicate with my family using HAM radios. They're 2.2 miles away in a flat suburban area. Most of that is open fields with trees. I got about .8 miles... On high power mode. They're going right back to the store. Wasted $35 on the GMRS license. Don't buy this if you need reliable communication outside of .5 mile.
there are only 22 channels in family service then add the privetcy codes you still have 22 channels and 8 miles belong's on g m r s channels you need to program that radio to talk to a tower just like the police and fire dept's do hopely know I brought you right and ye I own a licensed radio station in fact I have this guy's big brother at 45 watts out put

These are line of sight if they have obstructions, they're not gonna get super good range. Flat areas with no trees and wide open spaces, you'll get more range.

I would go for the G M R S licensee as family service will not go over a mile that goes for all radios regardless what name you buy family service is for kid's it keep's them close to home and mission control A.K.A. MOM
@@donalderickson-si8ww - Wrong... you can use 2 watts on channels 1 to 7 and 5 watts on channels 15 to 22. And BTW those are GMRS radios and they can deliver way more than half a watt. Half a watt is only for FRS channels 8 to 14.
