On 17th July 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was blown out of the sky over Ukraine, killing 298 people. The attack on the aircraft sent shockwaves around the globe, with leaders in Europe and Australia vowing to bring the bodies home and the killers to justice.
In this program reporter Stephen Long travels to Europe and Ukraine to tell the stories of families who lost their loved ones in the crash - and people whose lives have been devastated by the dirty war in Ukraine. His report paints a stark picture of the conflict and the tactics used by both sides to gain an advantage.
In Europe, Long finds families caught in a cycle of grief, their leaders scrambling to react to the attack. In Ukraine, he meets with families who have lost their homes as their neighbourhood is over-run by Russian-backed militia. In broader terms, he shows how Ukraine has become the fault line in a power struggle between Russia and Europe.
The report highlights the fact that despite sanctions being imposed by the West, the economic dependence of Europe on Russia has hopelessly compromised any real attempt to find and punish the killers.
The tragedy has also led many to reconsider the strategic future of Europe, with one former top general warning that Russia should never be allowed to hold his country to ransom.

What a horrible tragedy! Never thought that kinda crash would be gonna happen to a passenger plane carrying people to my home country. The fact that many innocent lives onboard the plane were holidaymakers made it all the more sad and pitiful. They must have been looking forward to fulfilling their dreams and travelling abroad. But they lost their lives in such a tragic manner even before they could set foot on Malaysian soil. That's so unfortunate. Their dreams came crashing down.
This cruel world has already forgotten the pain of the victims' relatives. This world is no place for many sadly.

Before 2014 I used to fly Malaysia Airlines all the time but after the two crashes we rarely use Malaysia Airlines. Malaysia Airlines was one of the safest airlines up till then. The crash still effects me up till this day.

According to the Il-76 TA of the Russian Air Force, there were 2 anti-aircraft missiles (any air defense officer will explain why two missiles are fired), debris from the missiles was discovered almost immediately - only 5 are shown in the photo. in the video they were identified, material was washed off from the wreckage, and explosives were examined; the type of explosive and the percentage coincided with those used in foreign-made air defense systems. During the investigation, it became known that the plane was shot down by the American Patriot system. The remains of the victims have already been identified, more than 670 fragments of bodies were found at the crash site, and partially preserved personal documents were also confiscated.
On board were six crew members, 65 military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the exchange and three Russian military personnel accompanying them.

The first to arrive were employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Ukraine and independent journalists; on July 18, 2014, a group of 30 OSCE officers arrived with accompanying journalists to inspect and photograph the wreckage; dozens of various journalists and television crews arrived, but the arrival of the expert group was delayed for unknown reasons.

The DSB investigation showed in its 2015 report the engine nozzle as a characteristic part of the Buk missile, but did not show the number on it. JIT investigators kept the "found" anti-aircraft missile engine casing secret for three years and did not reveal the numbers on the two pieces of debris.
Next was the well-known JIT press conference, at which the investigators, puffing out their cheeks menacingly, asked “Whose anti-aircraft missile is this? Tell me, who knows anything about her?”
And a natural fiasco three months later, when on September 17, 2018, the Russian Ministry of Defense held its press conference and showed documents for the missile. It turned out that in 1987 a missile hit the Military Unit of Terebovlya and after the collapse of the USSR naturally remained in Ukraine.
And yes, there is a difference. One of my students Afruz Tambi was aboard this flight. He was in my guitar class at QSI, Atyrau, Kazakhstan. He was the most talented guitarist and he and his fellow Malaysian students were at the top of their class and all around wonderful kids- a teacher's dream. Afruz and his entire family died in the crash. Still after all these years and no justice has been served. I can't even imagine the terror and horror he and his family as well as everyone else aboard experienced as their plane crashed down after the cockpit was blown off by a Russian missile. No, MH17 cannot be shot down with an anti-aircraft missile, this is clearly indicated by the macro parameters of this aviation disaster, based on the laws of physics (dynamics, vibrations and waves), and the design of the aircraft ( 1. The plane flew at a speed of about 900 km/ h, and therefore the initial speed of the wreckage is the same. The wreckage of the plane and this is not a wreck from the cockpit lie to the point where the anti-aircraft missile exploded according to the Dutch - and this is impossible, the destruction began earlier and not from the cockpit, inertia and gravity are equal forces directed forward and to the ground.2. Both flight recorders FDR, CVR are intact, recording stopped simultaneously. There is video of those interactions including ones showing the refrigerated vehicles the people of Donbas were using to refrigerate the bodies nearby instead of transporting them because the Ukrainian artillery rained suppression fire on the areas surrounding the crash site. It was the OSCE observers who prevented outsiders from going to the crash site. Not the militias of the Donbas region.

I wish the Netherlands embraced nuclear energy so that we weren't dependent on Russia for gas and oil. France leads the way with using nuclear power, and it is better for the environment than all the wind turbines and solar farms that the Netherlands is currently building.

The Airliner was sent on that course by Kiev air traffic control, not Donetsk, Rostov or any Russian ATC. Nobody ever mentions that missile can easily be put on a number of aircraft in Kiev's arsenal. Probably the most damning part were the number of 20mm cannon rounds that tore through the aircraft in photos taken immediately after the crash. Finally a BUK missile when it takes off leaves a trail of smoke from launch to impact that lingers for at least 15 minutes. Despite thousands of soldiers on BOTH sides milling about in that area, not one photo of the launch smoke cloud has ever been seen. Keep in mind Australia was in negotiations with Washington at the time about a military intervention in that very area. Amazing what the clouds of too big to fail media omit.

That was a commonly used air traffic corridor available for continued commercial use at altitudes above 32,000 feet. MH17 was flying well above that and in Ukrainian airspace.
@@agentanaranjado I read that nearly all commercial airlines were avoiding that part of Ukrainian airspace at the time, but Malaysian chose to use it in order to save a bit on fuel costs. If true, that's certainly not a decision that the company should have survived. They should be out of business by now.
That was the first question I had when it happened. Just last month Dutch parliament asked for the possiblity of investigation into Ukrainian government's involvement for not closing the airspace, but as Ukraine is part of the investigation team they can not be investigated.

Risk it? The fate of MH17 was already sealed on March 8, 2014, it was doomed! For all other flights, there was a risk from the Ukrainian air defense and Air Force, with the exception of MH17, it was a Malaysian Boeing 777-200ER, similar to flight MH370, on which Western intelligence agencies tested how to blow up the plane and simulate the hit of a suspected anti-aircraft missile into its cockpit.

The scariest thing about number 23 is both of my cousins died by that age.
First it happened in 2005 when my cousin was hit by a truck 🚛 on her way back from work. She was in the Navy.
Second happened to my another cousin in 2012. He was struck by lightning ⚡ during work at water treatment plant.
Both of them died by the age of 23 for seven years apart. No that number is a cursed number in my family.
