I just got finished chitting 50lbs of Yukon Gold (2 rotten taters total) and 2lbs of Pontiac Reds. First time growing taters. Fixing to have fun. That's for sure. Happy homesteading! 🙏🏻❤️
@@taylormullins3820 Hopefully. I always plant a lot of extra stuff, just in case some don't grow. We bought this farm in Dec of '22. We have loamy soil. We're still working on getting compost made, so we can get more organic matter in it. It's taking a while.
I wasn't so concerned about the price of the potatoes from wood prairie farms as much as I was shocked about the price of shipping. I almost cancelled my order, but I knew it wasn't wood prairie farms fault. I ordered the Adirondack red 1 lb bag. I currently have them in a dark drawer in a small plastic container chitting them. I can't wait to get them planted. Great video.
my grocery potatoes are spouting faster than my seed potatoes. I guess I'll plant them too. I'm in midlands SC. I think I'm a few weeks behind you. I'm very excited lol
I buy my seed potatoes from the grocery store. I got 5lb bag of Yukon gold potatoes for $4 and 10lb bag of red Norland potatoes $5.75. they sprouted way earlier than my store bought seed potatoes. Put in the ground a week before Valentine's day.
I have five pounds of potatoes chitting-lots of eyes sprouting. I'll probably cut them up on Sunday or Monday, then let them dry a few days. On March 1st, they go in the ground. In the mean time, I'm setting up a raised bed for them, complete with hardware cloth to keep the voles away from my potatoes. In previous years I've grown then in grow bags with good results. With the raised bed, I'll get more area to plant in a smaller space. One 3x6 raised bed is replacing five 30 gallon grow bags. The location is the same, so I am sure that I'll get a fantastic harvest.
Although I did buy mine from Wood Prairie Farms like usual, my local tractor supply has a pretty good selection of seed potatoes in 5 pound bags for $6.99. Good budget route if you have one nearby, or check your local "seed & feed" or farm supply.
We usually plant Feb 14th, too. Dad plants by the moon signs and it's not tater days until the 25th or so. We're cutting ours Sunday and having a family cookout. We'll plant them next week. We have acidic soil here in SE Texas so we roll ours in ash from the woodstove we have in the barn. At my house I just plant taters I wanna try so i don't buy fifty pounds of anything. I plant mine whenever I feel like it. Sometimes I cut, sometimes I don't. I'm just growing for experiments and to save seed. And for fresh eating We plant our big preserving crops at my dad's and sister's houses.
I just cut mine today.. getting ready to hit the ground Sunday or Monday. Last year our potatoes harvest was so good. Hoping for great season for them again this year. Thanks for your information.
I'm right down the road a bit and I've been itching to get my 'taters in the ground. I think/hope it's finally warm enough to put them out this weekend. Cheers from just across the border!
Just bought my seed taters from our local feed and seed store. Got 50lb sack for $28 and about 10 lbs of yukon golds. I did the same last year and harvested over 600 lbs of red potatoes. I chit mine for about 2 weeks and they really take off quick.I also don't cut my seed taters, but I defiantly could see why sum would if ur paying 20 bucks for 1 lb of seed taters.
I'm in north central Ohio. Last year i tried 5# of Elba against 5# of Kennebec. I got 100# from the Elba and 70# from the Kennebec. The Elba had bigger potatoes and they stored alot better. This year I'm gonna plant all Elba.
I appreciate how you have different Georgia State Park tshirts in many of your videos! We have such an excellent park system here! Black rock mountain is my favorite! Thanks for all your great garden tips! Love your channel!
I went to my local feed & seed store and bought 5 lbs of red taters for $5. I spent a bundle for special taters from WPF last year and for the price difference I can eat the red LaSoda's. Daddy always grew the red Pontiac by the 50 lb bags as we were a large family. After they were dry they were layered in pine straw under the house in a large hole in the dirt. We ate taters several times a week lol.
Yes and no shipping fees. I bought bag of Yukon Gold and Blue Adirondack at TSC. Paid $25 for 5 lbs of Caribe on line plus $15 shipping. I now have more taters than row feet. 😀
It's still "quarter to" tater time here in Illinois. Last years leftovers are chitting like nuts.. do you have any recommendations for long sprouts? Start over or plant them anyway?
I am growing True Potato Seed. I planted 24 seeds and 22 came up. I will be transplanting them hopefully over the weekend. This is my first time trying TPS. Like you said it is a hobby. I am growing for the fun.
Got budget friendly tators at feed store today (red, yellow, white 1 lb each) for a first try at growing. Thx for timely video. If these go well will branch out to fun tators.
I've planted them both ways, just plant them whole now, personal preference, makes plenty good. Was thinking about trying some of those other potatoes but when the shipping is as much or more than the potatoes I just go on down to the feed store and get a few pounds of seed potatoes. They do us just fine.
Well, I have no room in my beds to grow potatoes...but that has never stopped me. I bought a little bag of seed potatoes from Wal-mart for $3.24 that had 5 potatoes that already had sprouts growing and I tucked them in the garden last weekend. My soil really isn't deep enough but we'll see how it goes.
😂😂😂😂😂 Man, Just when I was about to plant them red tators… I guess I will go with a different variety. 😂 All jokes aside, I feel your pain. That’s how I felt growing up in my native country. Green plantains for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And heck, if they turn a hint of yellow, we had plantain desserts.😂 But I’ll be planting potatoes tomorrow in buckets. I have a few red, some Russet and Yukon Gold potatoes. All are from the grocery store, so we shall see. Thanks for always providing a world of information. Really learning lots from your channel. Blessings to you and your beautiful family.
I don’t have my tators in yet either. Shootin for tomorrow. I know you’re a plant man, but you got some guitar picking fingers! Just an observation from a goober in Texas. Enjoying the videos. Keep them coming.
Well. Good evening folks. Travie Trav, i personally think u presented this vlog well. Buddy let me tell you WHAT!? I was oh so excited when my Wood Prairie Family Farm catalog hit my mailbox. Its a smaller size catalog about an old tv guide size.. anyways. What dang near hurt my feelings was the price 😔😮. Good gracious, $19.99for 1 pound of Huckleberry Gold seed taters!. (Well i still bought one pound of them to try) an i got 2.5lbs of the Carola , which I have heard/read so many good things about. Lets say i got HIGH expectations... Now that said, i refused to pay that taxed price on all my seed taters. I ordered from Keene garlic, an a variety or two from Fedco. I was excited about WPFF cus u could get whatever you wanted 8-9months outta the year delivered when u wanted it! But at the same time they charge,in some cases, 5o% ++ for the presumably same taters other companies do. Its jus the other companies have a more limited shipping time. But lets be real the times that they are restricted to shipping is , thats when the majority of customers need them. Ok, all that said love the channel brother. I too am super pumped about the tater growing season. Trav u an your viewers have a wonderist evening and a fanfrigintastic growing season.

It's a fun hobby...and a lot cheaper than golf LOL! Great video, full of helpful tips! Did you ever do a video explaining what you liked about each type of potato. And you mentioned Baltic Rose being your favorite, can you explain why? Thanks for the great videos on planting potatoes!
I cut mine and sow them, a solid row of seed side by side, I always have to cover the row toward harvest becase taters are busting the ground and popping out.
God bless you!! A man should be allowed to grow what ever Tater works best for him!!! lol..... We truly appreciate your humor. It leans toward the corn side, but we get it.. We bought from prairie wood farms. Happy so far. .............. Carry on. ;)

Hey Trav, I am getting my potatoes ready to plant (I'm in 8b I think). My question is do potatoes need drip irigation ? Thanks for all the great videos!!!
Ive never commented and only do it if i have time but some old ashes out of a burn pile coating the potatoes works really well not sure what it does but my father used to do it.

Wow your seed potatoes are quite expensive over there - I'm in UK and just bought 1kg of seed spuds for £1.99 from a local BnM store 🥔🌿🥔🌿🥔 and received through the post from Thompson & Morgan some seed potatoes 5 growbags and a selection of 5 vegetable and fruit seed packs £6 for the lot 😳

Not going to have many Conadria trees this year. They didn't propagate that well this time for some reason. I will have a few more to add, but not many.
We buy our papas (sorry we don't call them taters in New Mexico) from Wood Prairie Farms as well. Yes they may cost more than the store bought ones. Then taste comparison there is none. Far far far superior potato. Have fun in Nashville. Was there last June a fun place to be ..................................................... for a few days that is!
