    Quite frankly, I don't care how much of his work is real, manipulative, psychologically predictive, or flat trickery. His persona and presentation are flawless, the illusion is complete, and the lines between the tricks and the truth are magnificently blurry. Truly a genius showman who deserves every ounce of his success and applause.

      bryceanwhimsey It’s all standard magicians tricks but the way he dresses it up as ‘psychological trickery’ and ‘subliminal cryptic manipulations’ is really unique and fantastic, no one else has done that. But in the end it’s the same old card/prop tricks that have been done for decades. Wonderful stuff

      Yes that is what makes him a great performer. Walking on glass, psychic surgery, math tricks, etc etc, have been done by tons of religious charlatans. But he synthesizes it all into a captivating show.

    I caught NONE of the subliminal messages he'd said during the show on the first go. As he was admitting them, I played back the specific parts; "tear around influential", "daily mail", "hammer mail in your head" and lo and behold, they were there the whole time. Amazing how that works.

      There was a performer named Banachek on Rogan’s podcast who
      did a similar act and used the same
      suggestive techniques, including gestures. He explained exactly how he got people to choose geometric shapes.
      Derren was also on Rogan’s podcast.

    • @mdderrek9280
      @mdderrek9280 3 года назад +3

      well that is not fascinating.. it is misleading.
      He tells you that his acts are tricks, which is fine,.. but he cannot take the educator part and lie..
      Remember when he predicted the lottery.. the act is very artistic..
      Then, at the "NON MAGIC PART/Revealing part" of the TV special he claims that he will tell how he did it.
      What did he say?? see for yourself..
      I'm a fan of him but he is not trustworthy..
      The problem is he takes the part of educator and debunker and he cannot lie when he talks in that person.. he can lie in the magic acts as he wants.. but not when informing or educating.

      @bad1dobby Hey bad1dobby, it is because he sometimes tackles very sensitive issues of fraud, physic taking advantage of people and ruin their life savings, the man with the x ray vision and so on...
      So, for the audience he is now " guiding you to the truth" , he cannot lie in this part..
      I mean with your logic, he could say " there is no stooges" and he is lying about it !!!!
      when he talks to audience as NOT a part of an act it is misleading to lie..
      Look at that trick we are talking about , he convinces the audience that the trick has ended, and explains that it is in their heads because of newspapers and subliminal messages....
      Don't you think that have bad consequences?!!! even more for sensitive people or OCDs or people don't wanna read about medical advice not to fall in subliminal messaging,, to be uncertain about every thing( in a bad way, not in a scientific way) ??

Real escapism, totally captivating and the way he commands the stage is outstanding - been a fan since I was a child and I don’t think it would ever happen but if I ad the chance I’d jump at it to see him live.

    Here's how the glass walking trick is done:
    First, you need to know you can't stop oxygen to your brain and expect to be lucid and capable of walking around. So that tells you right off that isn't the factor in being able to walk on broken glass. He stopped his pulse by placing an object under his armpit (slight of hand or placed prior) and pressing his arm against his body, cutting off the detection in his wrist. That's why you see him remove her hand from his wrist at 38:46 before he extends his arm and stands up. As for the glass walking, it's the opposite of fire walking. In fire walking you do it fast enough that the hot embers don't have time to burn your feet. In glass walking, if you walk slow enough on a large bed upward pointed edges will have a tendency to slide away because they have a rounded underside. If they don't slide, you can still feel the sharp edges and adjust your weight accordingly.

There are a few tricks for which I have a guess, but I don't really care, because the best is really the humour, the show and the interaction with the audience. There is something of a theatre play in it.

    Spoiler: Please only read this after you've watched the entire show. It will ruin the fun for you, otherwise.
    I went to see this show live, at a different venue, and the way you process those subliminal messages throughout the show, to the newspaper and page number, feels really strange. Hearing them now, knowing that they exist, they seem really blatant and clear. Having first seen the show live, I obviously don't know if they affect a viewer in the same way if you first see the show as a recording. But when you're actually in the audience, you drift right past them. I can recall particularly frowning at the one he slips in after the nail-in-the nose routine. I registered something unusual, but only in a semi-conscious way, then immediately forgot about the whole moment. It's hard to describe. And you do indeed remember every single one, as clear as a bell, once you are reminded in the playback of them. It's really fascinating to have your mind played with in such a way, you'd think you wouldn't be susceptible to it but you learn how easy it is to miss something which seems so obvious after the event. I can only make a guess that it works by somehow catching the audience where they are momentarily occupied by a subtle misdirection of their natural thought process, and their expectation of what should be said in a sentence of such structure fools them into making a wrong assumption over what they actually heard. Really enjoyable night, absolutely engaging and a fantastic piece of theatre.

    The "influential" trick is one of the greatest mentalism tricks of all time and in my opinion Derren's best.
    So many mentalism effects rely on revealing the prediction after it's already happened. To reveal it over the course of the show is simply phenomenal.

    • @Ithrazel
      @Ithrazel 10 месяцев назад

      Except it's not a major mentalism trick at all - he adds 10 pieces of paper just as the girl hands the pieces of newspaper to him, likely on all of his selected pieces he will have that word there. The main mentalism part here is to get the girl to pick "influencial" out of the words she sees on the piece of paper (he says pick a long interesting word, probably does quite a few of his mind magic there). Anything that happened before with the tearing of the newspaper, the choosing of the page etc. does not matter at all.

    • @thomasbrassington
      @thomasbrassington Месяц назад

      Don’t think it has to be all 10 bits of paper. She say 7, he gets her to pick the eighth. She’s unlikely to choose 1 or 2, or 10 or 9, so it only needs to be at most pieces 3 5 and 7. Also in the close up I couldn’t see any of the other words he said were there. Maybe they were on the back, which she couldn’t see to pick from, or partly torn?
      (Not from a magician, just a guy who was the one who tore up the Mail and handed it to him when he played Stoke.) one thing I distinctly do remember is before he threw the newspaper to me. I am a tall chap, and was near the front wearing a rather pink shirt. Before he threw it he looked at me and said “if I throw it will you catch it?”. When whoever was onstage chosing which newspaper to pick, the house light really shone in her eyes, and I’m guessing all she could see was me.
      All that said, I’m not really a fan of magic shows (which I know this was), but the presentation was.., well.., magical.

    23:07 Didn't he ask to write down the surnames nice and clear, in broad capital letters at 13:30? There are obviously cameras overhead,the rest is showmanship.
    At 54:30 he's likely tapping the numbers on her hand, while he's holding it. At 55:34 he puts 3 fingers on her shoulder, after placing 5, and says that she wants to change 1 digit. She changes it from 5 to 3.
    Not trying to be a dick, just trying to figure out how he did some things.

      To me it's still unclear exactly to what extent his non-verbal "mirroring" can actually affect the outcome of his tricks or his participant's choices but definitely not enough to produce all of the spectacle he does. Through non-verbals, he can effectively guess about lying and read cues about words or numbers he asks them to think of from their bodies to allow for better guesses but he only sprinkles that in and definitely does most tricks through conventional magical means and covers his tracks under the guise of "subliminal programming" or "influence".

      You're not a dick for understanding simple tricks! I just noticed that, but what about the 2nd number 24? I didn't se him do anything odd there. Anyways, he is a bright man and his knowledge of how humans work and how to easily trick us is amazing. Great comment!

    I don't believe for a second that saying "sleep" to someone hypnotizes them. It's pretty much the only thing I find absolutely ridiculous in what Derren does. The rest is all good, even if I can work out how the tricks were done, and the presentation is really entertaining.

    The timing here at 52:12 when the phone went off and Derren said don't answer it, it will be really bad news, and then he picks out The Sun newspaper, a paper stuffed with really bad news and appalling hack journalism, which makes me wonder if the audience laughed at the irony of this moment, because as soon as he says The Sun, the audience laughter increased.

    the glass thing and his heartbeat is 100% grade A acting, I can do that same heart beat thing with a rolled up wash cloth in my armpit, I used to bet $5 I could "stop my heart" with the other nurses at work, same with making it speed up a whole bunch by tightening all the muscles in my chest and core, it's impressive how such a simple trick works so well and no one thinks of it even though it's obvious, his performance was really good though, dude should be an actor
