Quite frankly, I don't care how much of his work is real, manipulative, psychologically predictive, or flat trickery. His persona and presentation are flawless, the illusion is complete, and the lines between the tricks and the truth are magnificently blurry. Truly a genius showman who deserves every ounce of his success and applause.
bryceanwhimsey It’s all standard magicians tricks but the way he dresses it up as ‘psychological trickery’ and ‘subliminal cryptic manipulations’ is really unique and fantastic, no one else has done that. But in the end it’s the same old card/prop tricks that have been done for decades. Wonderful stuff
Roman Marshall No because he’s not just a magician, he does know physchology as well
I totally agree.
Yes that is what makes him a great performer. Walking on glass, psychic surgery, math tricks, etc etc, have been done by tons of religious charlatans. But he synthesizes it all into a captivating show.
@@romanmarshall602 I mean, isn't that what magicians' tricks are? It's not real magic, after all.
52:10 "It's really bad news" probably the best joke of the show, maybe because it was genuine and improvised. Marvellous
and then pulls out The Sun. Double whammy.
And I find myself back here, watching this performance for the 50th time because I just love every moment of this. It's, as the British would say, bloody brilliant.
Lol not all british people talk like Stephen Fry but I get the point.
Me: "couldn't possibly have a better day".
RUclips: "here's Derren Brown's show".
it works in the upside down too, "Man, could this day get any wors!......ooh a Derren Brown show!"
Phil Hoffman Magic yep.. Love Derren
I caught NONE of the subliminal messages he'd said during the show on the first go. As he was admitting them, I played back the specific parts; "tear around influential", "daily mail", "hammer mail in your head" and lo and behold, they were there the whole time. Amazing how that works.
Lol, yeah, that's not how that works. It has literally nothing to do with that. It's just a trick. A good trick, but a trick nonetheless.
What a bloody fantastic entertainer he truly is. Love this one out of all them.
At 4:50 he says " you can change your mind or DON'T, stick with It " pretty incredible
This man is one of the best and most educational entertainers that have ever existed. I truly appreciate his presentation and the respect he pays his audience. I cannot think of anyone better.
31:05 that smirk on his face when he says influential
What's even MORE fascinating is that the very end where he "reveals" how that word was chosen, was probably just a gimmick to make everyone think "oh that's how he did it" when in fact there was probably something even more unknown at play... knowing Derren, lol
Exactly! Only Derren's true fans would know this
It really was this and maybe some other things that helped but mainly suggestions
There was a performer named Banachek on Rogan’s podcast who
did a similar act and used the same
suggestive techniques, including gestures. He explained exactly how he got people to choose geometric shapes.
Derren was also on Rogan’s podcast.
well that is not fascinating.. it is misleading.
He tells you that his acts are tricks, which is fine,.. but he cannot take the educator part and lie..
Remember when he predicted the lottery.. the act is very artistic..
Then, at the "NON MAGIC PART/Revealing part" of the TV special he claims that he will tell how he did it.
What did he say?? see for yourself..
I'm a fan of him but he is not trustworthy..
The problem is he takes the part of educator and debunker and he cannot lie when he talks in that person.. he can lie in the magic acts as he wants.. but not when informing or educating.
@bad1dobby Hey bad1dobby, it is because he sometimes tackles very sensitive issues of fraud, physic taking advantage of people and ruin their life savings, the man with the x ray vision and so on...
So, for the audience he is now " guiding you to the truth" , he cannot lie in this part..
I mean with your logic, he could say " there is no stooges" and he is lying about it !!!!
when he talks to audience as NOT a part of an act it is misleading to lie..
Look at that trick we are talking about , he convinces the audience that the trick has ended, and explains that it is in their heads because of newspapers and subliminal messages....
Don't you think that have bad consequences?!!! even more for sensitive people or OCDs or people don't wanna read about medical advice not to fall in subliminal messaging,, to be uncertain about every thing( in a bad way, not in a scientific way) ??
This man is incredible because everything he does is so IMMERSIVE, even as a viewer at home you feel involved. Real escapism, totally captivating and the way he commands the stage is outstanding - been a fan since I was a child and I don’t think it would ever happen but if I ad the chance I’d jump at it to see him live.
I hope he keeps doing what he’s doing because he is one of - if not, the best at what he does.
This is just absolutely amazing. He’s an amazing showman and he’s incredibly talented at what he does. I love all of his stuff.
That everything he does is without any claim to the supernatural makes his talent all the more magical. Proof positive we are easily guided... and fooled.
I know this a year late but it's actually more than that. Not only does he not claim to be Supernatural he tells you exactly how it's done ...
And you fall for it again...and again...and again...
His showmanship is what sells the entire thing. He's a fucking genius on the stage simply because he acts and sells his tricks so well.
No words “mans a genius”.
I had to flick back through the show after that ending...even I was stunned that I didn’t pick up on any messages. Simply amazing !!!
I wish I could watch this for the first time again.
Kudos to the two hidden members of this amazing show! Darren works with two other brilliant people brainstorming to make these shows.
GahLakTus Worldeater Derren lol
Saw this live in London in 2005. Superb show
Watching my daily mail dose of Derren Brown
Like a good actor who can elicit a strong emotional response even when you know it isn't real, Derren can wow you with his presentation and showmanship with nothing more than some simple tricks. That my friends is talent.
simple tricks?
Choose daily *wink* mail *smirk*. Gotta love him. 😂
Fucking brilliant misdirection! But I especially enjoyed this interchange:
“Hit me.”
“No.”
“That was a bloody punch!”
He would make a brilliant Dr Who
The BBC couldn't afford him. He makes more in a year from his stage show, than any actor would in working 10 months on Doctor Who
Here's how the glass walking trick is done:
First, you need to know you can't stop oxygen to your brain and expect to be lucid and capable of walking around. So that tells you right off that isn't the factor in being able to walk on broken glass. He stopped his pulse by placing an object under his armpit (slight of hand or placed prior) and pressing his arm against his body, cutting off the detection in his wrist. That's why you see him remove her hand from his wrist at 38:46 before he extends his arm and stands up. As for the glass walking, it's the opposite of fire walking. In fire walking you do it fast enough that the hot embers don't have time to burn your feet. In glass walking, if you walk slow enough on a large bed upward pointed edges will have a tendency to slide away because they have a rounded underside. If they don't slide, you can still feel the sharp edges and adjust your weight accordingly.
how'd he lay down on it?
He's wearing clothes to protect him, could even have something under for protection, and he saw where he was putting his face. There's nothing supernatural happening here.
This makes sense. Awesome pick up
hey, this is youtube... do it yourself and show us how easy it is... and where does he ever *ever* claim any of this is supernatural. On the contrary he says it's misdirection, showmanship, ect. He's just very good at it. Well, not according to you, but to everyone else.
...any stained glass worker knows you can put your hands into glass 'cullet' [scrap] pieces, it is upward jagged pieces you need to avoid. And the tiny fleam-like bits [which when glass is in a bowl/tray fall to the bottom anyway...Derren is about Showmanship and entertainment...he is very good at what he does too.
I SO LOOK FORWARD TO WHAT HE'LL SAY AT THE END. IT'S USUALLY ABSOLUTELY GENIUS AND MAKES YOU FEEL SO AMAZED! ❤❤😊
Well worth seeing live.Been twice, would go again.
he is such a good 'performer' that his on stage delivery comes across as completely effortless, it takes immense talent to come across so natural
been to see him live, one of best nights ive ever had!! amazing
This gentleman is a superstar!
Darren creates effects that leave people stumped for years and years after. ❤
This is still my favorite of his live shows, of which I've seen 3 (online).
Just stumbled across him yesterday, absolutely enthralled!
Derren Brown is an actual legend.
My husband and I saw this show in Lowestoft. Fantastic night 😍😳🤯😃🥰
Also that cheeky wink and smile. I love that
Fantastic show!
Derren: I’m a magician and a showman, don’t believe a single word I say.
Audience: Wow, you can influence minds using subliminal messages?!
IMO that's his greatest trick. He has revealed nothing, but given his audience an out so they feel they understand how it worked.
Guilty as charged 🤣
shoulda done legos not glass
Theres only so much pain that a lack of oxygen can stop
Bahaha! Totally! Or plastic army men!
Pure evil
WOOOO WHOOOO!!! Only a real mom or dad would have thought of that truth! Funny!
It's lego, not legos
This is so intense, I don't know how he finds the energy to run through all the show, it must be exhausting. There are a few tricks for which I have a guess, but I don't really care, because the best is really the humour, the show and the interaction with the audience. There is something of a theatre play in it.
Can you upload more of his live shows? I hate using the Channel 4 player, it's so bad. It would be great to have Infamous, Miracle, Enigma and Svengali all on this channel!
DanTheStripe I think they are coming. Svengali is uploaded. So cool! Thank you Derren Brown 🙏👏
ENIGMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Miracle is on Netflix, so I doubt it would be uploaded.

this show is so well edited that people can't even differentiate between the clips. like at 21:24 you can see Charlotte in the audience (a little above the centre of the screen in her white dress.) though she was meant to be on the stage.
I’m addicted to ur shows
he just hypnotized you to believe that.. in fact the shows are terrible
I can’t walk on a pebble beach without wincing.
Respect. 😂😂😂
Unreal. This guy is a genius!
I saw this live in the Riverside Newport south Wales and it was wicked. What a person
10:01 - "Think of MAIL" - I noticed that when I first saw this stage show many years ago and dismissed it, Derren must have simply said it wrong, but of course later on in the show we see why he said it.
I've watched this about 3+ times now over the years and the Daily Mail prompts are really obvious when you know about them.
15:14 The lady in the middle of the stage saw him wink to the camera and looked over and I bet she too was doped by the ending.
Spoiler: Please only read this after you've watched the entire show. It will ruin the fun for you, otherwise.
I went to see this show live, at a different venue, and the way you process those subliminal messages throughout the show, to the newspaper and page number, feels really strange. Hearing them now, knowing that they exist, they seem really blatant and clear. Having first seen the show live, I obviously don't know if they affect a viewer in the same way if you first see the show as a recording. But when you're actually in the audience, you drift right past them. I can recall particularly frowning at the one he slips in after the nail-in-the nose routine. I registered something unusual, but only in a semi-conscious way, then immediately forgot about the whole moment. It's hard to describe. And you do indeed remember every single one, as clear as a bell, once you are reminded in the playback of them. It's really fascinating to have your mind played with in such a way, you'd think you wouldn't be susceptible to it but you learn how easy it is to miss something which seems so obvious after the event. I can only make a guess that it works by somehow catching the audience where they are momentarily occupied by a subtle misdirection of their natural thought process, and their expectation of what should be said in a sentence of such structure fools them into making a wrong assumption over what they actually heard. Really enjoyable night, absolutely engaging and a fantastic piece of theatre.
7:50 in the background there is a mouse with SEE THIS words lol
Okay what the hell
Noticed 3 of the Daily Mail mentions and was wondering what Derren was planning to do with that
That was a really, really fucking awesome show & showmanship to boot. It’s also pretty cool how by showing you the tricks of his trade at the end, it also ends up, imo, being an bonus product of the show in itself, while at the same time humbling himself & not carrying on as some “influential” mystic. Very, very nicely done, all of it. 👍👍
Great performance by a Great showman!
A friend of mine saw this show at a different venue and she said one of the people supposedly from the audience called up here was also called up at the show she went to. Still loved the show though and she said you can really feel his force of personality even though she was sitting some distance from the stage.
Derren Brown: The S&M special
mapezaid Now that’s something I’d pay to see :p
The "influential" trick is one of the greatest mentalism tricks of all time and in my opinion Derren's best.
So many mentalism effects rely on revealing the prediction after it's already happened. To reveal it over the course of the show is simply phenomenal.
Except it's not a major mentalism trick at all - he adds 10 pieces of paper just as the girl hands the pieces of newspaper to him, likely on all of his selected pieces he will have that word there. The main mentalism part here is to get the girl to pick "influencial" out of the words she sees on the piece of paper (he says pick a long interesting word, probably does quite a few of his mind magic there). Anything that happened before with the tearing of the newspaper, the choosing of the page etc. does not matter at all.
Don’t think it has to be all 10 bits of paper. She say 7, he gets her to pick the eighth. She’s unlikely to choose 1 or 2, or 10 or 9, so it only needs to be at most pieces 3 5 and 7. Also in the close up I couldn’t see any of the other words he said were there. Maybe they were on the back, which she couldn’t see to pick from, or partly torn?
(Not from a magician, just a guy who was the one who tore up the Mail and handed it to him when he played Stoke.) one thing I distinctly do remember is before he threw the newspaper to me. I am a tall chap, and was near the front wearing a rather pink shirt. Before he threw it he looked at me and said “if I throw it will you catch it?”. When whoever was onstage chosing which newspaper to pick, the house light really shone in her eyes, and I’m guessing all she could see was me.
All that said, I’m not really a fan of magic shows (which I know this was), but the presentation was.., well.., magical.
I've watched the "Stealing the painting" sequel and its reaĺly good... awesome
You are the man.
I absolutely adore his presentation of the Human Blockhead, wonderful!
Saw this show live. Amazing!
That glass bit was genuinely unwatchable in the best way possible
just awesome as always.
Derren never ceases to amaze me!
Started watching one of the later tricks at .25 speed and it turned out super funny
After that trick where he cut off some of his oxygen he got fucking HYPE
Mans really got high after that glass performance. I'm used to calm and analytical Derren so his almost neurotic personality during the second half was a whole ass trip🤣🤣😅
Derren provides early guidance on lateral flow tests. He is a psychic after all... 😂
Ads. Every 2 minutes it seems. I'm using this as distraction, not ad skip practice
Anyone notice he didn't ask John his proffesion and John didn't question him on it. Thats how Derren knew he was preparing to lie. Pretty cool
21:22 the woman on stage is also in the crowd :D
Just camera usage the will cut edit different times and merge them together .. nothing to do with Derren
I wonder if derren has thought about doing a Vegas run? he would tear that shit up selling out every night. I saw Penn and teller there last week and it was a lacklustre performance and that's being kind. derren would take the US by storm id imagine
oh fuck i live in vegas and i know for a fact i'd go just to experience this shit first hand
mikebizzleuk I saw a show in Vegas & the guy was doing loads of Derren's old material. He even did the lottery number predication.
23:07 Didn't he ask to write down the surnames nice and clear, in broad capital letters at 13:30? There are obviously cameras overhead, the rest is showmanship.
At 54:30 he's likely tapping the numbers on her hand, while he's holding it. At 55:34 he puts 3 fingers on her shoulder, after placing 5, and says that she wants to change 1 digit. She changes it from 5 to 3.
Not trying to be a dick, just trying to figure out how he did some things.
Nothing wrong with that.
He does say multiple times that a major part of his thing is showmanship.
I'm sure he'd appreciate the comment
To me it's still unclear exactly to what extent his non-verbal "mirroring" can actually affect the outcome of his tricks or his participant's choices but definitely not enough to produce all of the spectacle he does. Through non-verbals, he can effectively guess about lying and read cues about words or numbers he asks them to think of from their bodies to allow for better guesses but he only sprinkles that in and definitely does most tricks through conventional magical means and covers his tracks under the guise of "subliminal programming" or "influence".
You're not a dick for understanding simple tricks! I just noticed that, but what about the 2nd number 24? I didn't se him do anything odd there. Anyways, he is a bright man and his knowledge of how humans work and how to easily trick us is amazing. Great comment!
Very entertaining.
The only trick I know how to do is stopping the pulse from the arm. It also was a pretty obvious one. The rest... simply wow.
I don't believe for a second that saying "sleep" to someone hypnotizes them. It's pretty much the only thing I find absolutely ridiculous in what Derren does. The rest is all good, even if I can work out how the tricks were done, and the presentation is really entertaining.
The counting buttons part had me laughing so hard I couldn't stop laughing for ages! I had to actually pause the video for a while haha
Is this an ad for the daily mail?
I can guarantee you The Daily Mail would be the last newspaper Derren would be a fan of.
Nice force with the bag and the balls.
i dont know much about magic and mentalism, but i know how Derren made his pulse disapeared and i loved the moment of hesitation when Ruth stoped using the drumstick on the mic ^_^
I love the joke he makes about the underage girl he supposedly sleeps with on tour (17:15)considering this was filmed before we came out as gay
"WE came out as gay?" Who, both you and Derren?
Yes, filthy innuendo is “sooo” funny! You told us all quite a lot about yourself didn’t you?
You “love” filth do you? Next!
@@oksills girl..
We?
I too hammer Daily a number 14 Mail into my head.
Immediately got an idea to put a Tesco bag over my head and suffocate myself a tiny bit lol
That IS an entertainer.
This is a mad lad.
When will you come to Las Vegas
I’m a hypnotherapist and Derren you are my freaking hero.
The timing here at 52:12 when the phone went off and Derren said don't answer it, it will be really bad news, and then he picks out The Sun newspaper, a paper stuffed with really bad news and appalling hack journalism, which makes me wonder if the audience laughed at the irony of this moment, because as soon as he says The Sun, the audience laughter increased.
Amazing, and so entertaining!
What is really scary about this is, if its real, is how easily we are influenced by a few words, you know they are doing this to us constantly
Darren Brown alien mind
The black ball is magnetic and is thereby detected as it passes thru the black bags neck and radio-pulsed to an insight accomplice, who in turn 'gesture' signal's Darren. Or by some similar technical means, OBVIOUSLY ! Do you think he will risk onstage failure without certainty ?
Hell yeah. Love Derren brown.
Absolutely brilliant
i love the ball under the arm trick.i blame sherlock fandom for ruining that one for me. and holy shit he's high AF at the end. lol. high on tricks :P
Speechless......wow!!
I love this man...
the glass thing and his heartbeat is 100% grade A acting, I can do that same heart beat thing with a rolled up wash cloth in my armpit, I used to bet $5 I could "stop my heart" with the other nurses at work, same with making it speed up a whole bunch by tightening all the muscles in my chest and core, it's impressive how such a simple trick works so well and no one thinks of it even though it's obvious, his performance was really good though, dude should be an actor
Aw MAN, the ol' hammer a nail into the nose trick? When was this filmed, 1914?
Dude, Price is the last name of the first girl I had a crush on. That was weird.
Simply Genius
My word is A M A Z I N G . . . .
Great act if he is acting. a great mind one of the best
